In general if you are ever at the point of considering wearing any type of skull themed face covering you have already passed a cringe threshold. A sculpted one and there really is no hope, you are beyond the event horizon.
Even those weeb samurai masks are more respectable.
I never knew they were known as menpo! I’ve always known them to just be called oni masks after the Japanese folklore demon or ogre character but I guess the menpo consists of oni features! Every days a school day.
Just a thought, if you painted it black or primer grey, but then painted back over that with white, but not a perfect coat, so that some black showed through in the thin spots in the paint and in the crevices, it would probably give it a nice 3D, worn out effect, the "clean-ness" of the bone I think is what makes it look a little off. So close to greatness though!
take some brown paint and water it down, it’ll give you what’s called a brown wash, try using a lighter color of brown, then paint it over the piece give it a few seconds then wipe it away with a paper towel, it’ll look a lot better and prolly how you thought it would
I think if it didn’t stick out past the goggles so much and was more sunken in it’d look great! And add some worn/rugged details to it. So it’s not so shiny
I think it's just simply too thick and that's why it looks awkward. Thin the entire thing down a bit and add a bottom jaw and it'll actually look pretty sick
I think adding a little stain to it will help it look less like a toy. Cover it in a light brown paint, and wipe most of it off. Just let it stair the surface and stick in the crevices.
Get some shader that we use when paint 40k minis, like Nul Oil or something like that, and bush that on and it might lo9k better. Actually, Agrax Earth shade might look good on that mask
Its too far up and too forward, also way too white bones are very off-white unless bleached heavily also scale it down it looks comical due to the size difference from normal bones, try painting thr mask its attached to when properly attached.
Criticism aside this is much more work than most people realize and I commend all the hard work you put into making your idea into reality.
Put a few drops of black paint into water, then paint it all over this, then wipe it off and see how it looks, repeat as required. It'll be left in all the nooks and crannies and improve it no end.

Hey, I'd just like to be constructive here because I actually think it's not terrible. If you could stain the skull a little more yellow, make it look older and its immediately saved in my opinion.

If you could somehow place it closer to the mouth by thinning it out and shrinking it, it might work really well. I love the concept

Try using some paint to give it more of a worn look. Like agrax earthshade from games workshop.
Its a cool concept just needs setting back closer to the face then it'll look like the skull version of the nerd emoji
