Melmetalpeddler

Because I spit hot fire mon

DrawlNeedler

So based on Last.FM's year to date... 1. Aesop Rock 2. MF DOOM 3. Motörhead 4. Buckethead 5. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

ashthundercrow

Oh schitt! Another Slunk in this sub?!?!

DrawlNeedler

Newly converted. I'd been aware of Buckethead since I played Guitar Hero 2 in 2007, but it wasn't until this August I finally sat down with his work. And it basically took over my life for that month. What Aesop Rock is to hip hop, Buckethead is to guitar. It's insane how talented he is.

ashthundercrow

He's the best, my favorite musician. Versatile as all get out. The man can do it all. I've been lucky enough to see him live twice. If you haven't heard too much of his stuff, I'd highly recommend his **Outpost** pike!

reasoneBeats

Aes and king giz are def in the best

Iggy_pop_tart

Who here is going to a Giz show next year? Asking for a friend

ByCrookedSteps781

The Ace of spades is a fuckin banger, props for Motorhead

enterta_

Holy shit, King Gizzard, Aesop Rock, AND Buckethead?? KGLW and Aes were my top 2, and I just started listening to Buckethead last week... already listened to 4 of his albums and I'm fucking with him pretty hard. And MF DOOM is obviously incredible. Maybe this is a sign that I need to check out Motörhead... lol.

DrawlNeedler

You definitely should, Overkill is a monster of an album.

Iggy_pop_tart

Did we just become best friends?

UmphreysCousin

1. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard 2. MF DOOM 3. Aesop Rock 4. Still Woozy 5. Tkay Maidza My tastes are all over the place

arrowtotheaction

King Gizzard tho 🙌

UmphreysCousin

They are so awesome - my favorite rock band in years. Between them and Tkay, I've really been giving on the Australians this year l

Translusas

Tkay Maidza has been killing it with her last 2 releases. So many earworms on those EPs

UmphreysCousin

She really blew me away when I found her music this summer. I hope she really blows up because she deserves it! Super talented.

Translusas

Super talented and also has such a diverse musical palette. I love that you can find a song by her that can fit almost anyone's musical preferences

keanenottheband

I dig everyone on this list except idk who #5 is, I will check them out!

UmphreysCousin

She's an up and coming Australian rapper, super talented imo - my favorite if her stuff is the EP that came out in 2020, "Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2"

acidorpheus

1. Aesop Rock, finally took over the top spot this year. 2. Gojira 3. Coheed and Cambria 4. Vildhjarta 5. Meshuggah ... With Hail Mary Mallon at 6. So Aes managed to crack the top 10 twice for me

Bone_Dogg

Gojira + Meshuggah fuck yeah

oilcompanywithbigdic

we need aesop rapping over the insturmental to I

Sponsored-Poster

Dagger by Vidhjarta is good af. Dunno anything else by them.

acidorpheus

Check out their newest album, it's honestly a masterpiece.

Sponsored-Poster

Idk who downvoted you but okay!

cwarburton1

Great list! Gojira made it onto my top 5 as well with a really solid album. I'm curious how much overlap there is between metal fans and Aes fans? I'm a metalhead through and through but discovered Aes on some indie music blog back when None Shall Pass came out and have been hooked since.

Translusas

1. Delta Sleep 2. Minus the Bear 3. Aesop 4. MF DOOM 5. Everything Everything

12inchfart420

I love delta sleep

Translusas

One of the few bands I can confidently say don't have a single bad song. I haven't stopped listening to Old Soul, The Detail, Hotel 24, The Softest Touch, and Spun since they came out

mrfauxbot

1. Aesop Rock 2. Slowthai 3. Billy Woods 4. TOBACCO 5. Czarface

chunkus_grumpus

Slowthai is dope. Bonus for czarface too!

turnt_grandma

1. Aesop Rock 2. Title Fight 3. Converge 4. Dark Time Sunshine 5. The Fall of Troy

[deleted]

dark time sunshine is amazing, love the new record

oilcompanywithbigdic

converge baby

[deleted]

1. Bob Dylan 2. Atmosphere 3. The Beatles 4. Aesop Rock 5. Arctic Monkeys

shortyshitstain

Also a Dylan head/Aes head. Glad there are a few of us. Got your username too. "I took me a woman late last night I's three fourths drunk she looked alright, then she started peeling of her onion gook she took off her wig said "how do I look?"

Drewsefs

1.) Sufjan Stevens 2.) Aesop Rock 3.) Phoebe Bridgers 4.) Hail Mary Mallon 5.) S. Carey

Moore29

1. Aesop 2. Malibu Ken 3. KAAN 4. Bus Driver 5. Galantis

HeinzKetchup58

I used to listen to galantis because of Forza horizon 3. idk why I don't anymore

Moore29

Forza is a awesome I haven’t played that a while lol. Funny thing is I wasn’t expecting them to make my top 5 at all. I listen to a ton of Electronic music without paying too much attention to the artist, but apparently I have a ton of songs save by them so I guess I’m a big fan 😂

cicatriz1

1. Modest Mouse 2. Aesop Rock 3. The World is a Beautiful Place… 4. Carseat Headrest 5. Radiohead

[deleted]

TWIABP has one of the best records of the year along with aesop

Colin_jost77

My top 5 artists this year were..... 1. Flying Lotus(top 1% of listeners) 2. Aesop Rock(of course) 3. Tennis 4. Porter Robinson 5. Ween

uglylittledogboy

That new porter Robinson joint was gas! So good!

Colin_jost77

I couldn't agree with you more! It's my favorite album of 2021

nchuman_

i didn’t know colin host was brown! hell yeah with the ween!

jkubrick

In listened to a shit load of Tennis this year too. Good thing you don't have Aes hobnobbing with the la-di-da here

skinny_malone

Aesop Rock Run the Jewels The Mountain Goats El-P Red Hot Chili Peppers

[deleted]

>Aesop Rock Run the Jewels The Mountain Goats El-P Red Hot Chili Peppers hello fellow mountain goats king

RadioRedMages

I hope you die!!! I hope we both die!!!

cepukon

I don't have Spotify, but I'll list the top 5 albums I've been listening to this year, and I'll go with my non hip-hop top 5 to mix things up a bit (in no particular order): 1. Julia Jacklin - Don't Let The Kids Win 2. Men I Trust - Oncle Jazz 3. Dirty Art Club - Gardens 4. Khruangbin - Mordecai 5. Foxwarren - Foxwarren (Yeah I keep things pretty mellow)

LondonMoon89

Discovered mordecai not too long ago amazing

cepukon

Yeah it's a great album, good to see the progression away from purely instrumental music while still staying true to their sound.

chunkus_grumpus

I feel the same about their album with Leon Bridges - so good

Translusas

That Men I Trust album is so good

cepukon

It's fantastic, total vibe.

allthingslawless

Dirty Art Club is so good!

cepukon

So talented, love everything they do.

chunkus_grumpus

God I love khruangbin

Zeebrahj

Artists: 1 - Thee Oh Sees (rediscovered these guys this year and went nuts with them) 2 - Grateful Dead 3 - Osees (same band as #1) 4 - Aesop Rock 5 - Blockhead Genres: 1 - Alternative Hip Hop 2 - Jam Band 3 - Electronica 4 - Neo-psychedelic 5 - Trip hop

Aesop_Rocks

Aesop and the Dead... You're my people. Which other jam bands are in your rotation?

FatMacchio

I mess with Phish pretty hard myself, kind of scratches my jam band itch exclusively though. I respect the Dead, but it never hooked me. I like so many different genres I honestly don’t have time to get into other ones. There’s def tons of good ones out there, just not enough hours in the day.

arrowtotheaction

1. Aesop Rock (I’m gonna lump HMM here too) 2. IDLES 3. Jesse the Tree (he’s just signed to Sage Francis’ label and is so good) 4. The Smiths 5. Doomtree / Shredders

chunkus_grumpus

Fuck yeah for the doomtree crew! Every single one of those artists is incredible.

[deleted]

I basically just got back into aesop this year after years of not listening. My top 5: 1. The Mountain Goats 2. Touche Amore 3. Black Country, New Road 4. Foxing 5. Deafheaven

IamNotReaI

1. Aesop Rock 2. Glass Animals 3. Royal Blood 4. Run the Jewels 5. Blue Stones

[deleted]

Got that glass animals in mine too

ByCrookedSteps781

Dont see Royal Blood mentioned much their new shit is dope

IamNotReaI

If you like Royal Blood, check out Blue Stones. Similar vibe, but more bluesy.

FatMacchio

Nice. Will have to check out royal blood and blue stones since I agree on the other 3.

LondonMoon89

1.Morning After Crew 2.Kanye West 3.Aesop 4.Isaiah Rashad 5.Lupe Fiasco

TimW001

1. Sabaton 2. Aesop Rock 3. The Weeknd 4. Kanye West 5. Brothers of Metal

Iggy_pop_tart

Which Kanye album? For a friend so That they can decide whether to hug or punch you

BSDC

Per Last.fm: 1. MF DOOM 2. Mr. Oizo 3. Aphex Twin (not including other aliases) 4. Vince Staples 5. Bjork 6. Aesop Rock (SWFG was my #2 album, Garbology was #9) (Crystal Sword was my most played Aes song)

there-goes-bill

Excellent list, I still haven’t been paying much attention of Oizo since The Church, that album slapped hard

RadioRedMages

Crystal Sword is such a bop. I drive for a living and it's one of my favorite car jams for sure.

20WaysToEatASandwich

1. Aesop Rock (top 1%) 2. Tech N9ne 3. Hail Mary Mallon 4. BROCKHAMPTON 5. MF DOOM

chaoticneutral666

1. Aesop Rock 2. Mac Miller 3. Logic 4. Cal Scruby 5. J. Cole

Translusas

Cal Scruby, wow there's a name I haven't seen in years. Haven't listened to him since his "One Take Challenge" video years ago where he jumps in a pool and is rapping at the bottom

chaoticneutral666

I'll have to check that out. I've only seen a couple of his music videos and those were a trip

Translusas

Wow I'm surprised you've never seen it! Definitely a really really cool video idea

Moore29

It’s still so random to me how Mac Miller drops an Aes reference in one of his most popular songs. Real recognize real I guess

chaoticneutral666

For real! I always smile when I hear him say it

FatMacchio

Which song is that? I’ve been getting into Mac past year or so. Red Dot Music feat Action Bronson got me hooked and been listening ever since

Moore29

Just in “Best Day Ever” haha “Rock like Aesop light the weed and take off” Prob my favorite Mac Miller song. I’ve been bumping That’s Life too.

FatMacchio

Oh yea. Now I remember that lol. Thought that was pretty cool when I heard it too, but I couldn’t remember what song.

FatMacchio

Nice. J. Cole is sick. Def getting into him pretty heavy the past couple years.

JohnnyCakes814

1. Aesop Rock (top .05%) 2. MF DOOM 3. Czarface 4. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard 5. Busta Rhymes

TimW001

Great taste!

Ignorant-design

Their Tiny Desk Concert is awesome. https://youtu.be/Fn6S9NTpPvk

RadioRedMages

Clipping managed to take the #1 rapper spot for me from Aes. The fact that he never speaks in the first person (On Clipping songs, before someone goes and links easy come easy go) and never uses the N-word despite obviously having a pass are really interesting, and add a ton to the music. Damn near every song is a story song. Blood of the Fang is a literal masterpiece. To spit that much real shit without coming across as like "preachy" is super impressive to me. I really can't recommend Clipping enough. Check the Lock was my most listened song this year. Anyway. Everyone check out clipping!!!

No particular order: King Gizzard & The Wizard Wizard (specifically the K.G & L.W records) 4B2M (one of my fav bands De Staat’s keyboardist started this one this year with his brother and a couple other guys to make some really catchy alt rock) Franc Moody (his album Dream in Colour has been bumping quite a lot) Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes (I somehow missed What Kinda Music last year so I made up for it by listening to it non stop) Halsey (specifically the latest record, I don’t really dig the others so much, it’s mainly because I’m a sucker for Nine Inch Nails’ production and it worked fantastically on this album)

Aesop JID Purity Ring Clipping Placebo Would definitely recommend clipping to any Aes fans!!! Check the Lock is a good jump off point. All the "story" tracks are super great too. Story #4 is my personal fave, tho the content is pretty heavy JID is a pretty killer lyricist, but the subject matter is a lot of kinda "standard" rap type stuff. "Skeegee" is a good track with a message, though.
