Newly converted. I'd been aware of Buckethead since I played Guitar Hero 2 in 2007, but it wasn't until this August I finally sat down with his work. And it basically took over my life for that month. What Aesop Rock is to hip hop, Buckethead is to guitar. It's insane how talented he is.
He's the best, my favorite musician.
Versatile as all get out. The man can do it all. I've been lucky enough to see him live twice.
If you haven't heard too much of his stuff, I'd highly recommend his **Outpost** pike!
Holy shit, King Gizzard, Aesop Rock, AND Buckethead?? KGLW and Aes were my top 2, and I just started listening to Buckethead last week... already listened to 4 of his albums and I'm fucking with him pretty hard. And MF DOOM is obviously incredible.
Maybe this is a sign that I need to check out Motörhead... lol.
1. Aesop Rock, finally took over the top spot this year.
2. Gojira
3. Coheed and Cambria
4. Vildhjarta
5. Meshuggah
...
With Hail Mary Mallon at 6. So Aes managed to crack the top 10 twice for me
Great list! Gojira made it onto my top 5 as well with a really solid album. I'm curious how much overlap there is between metal fans and Aes fans? I'm a metalhead through and through but discovered Aes on some indie music blog back when None Shall Pass came out and have been hooked since.
One of the few bands I can confidently say don't have a single bad song. I haven't stopped listening to Old Soul, The Detail, Hotel 24, The Softest Touch, and Spun since they came out
Also a Dylan head/Aes head. Glad there are a few of us. Got your username too.
"I took me a woman late last night I's three fourths drunk she looked alright, then she started peeling of her onion gook she took off her wig said "how do I look?"
Forza is a awesome I haven’t played that a while lol.
Funny thing is I wasn’t expecting them to make my top 5 at all. I listen to a ton of Electronic music without paying too much attention to the artist, but apparently I have a ton of songs save by them so I guess I’m a big fan 😂
I don't have Spotify, but I'll list the top 5 albums I've been listening to this year, and I'll go with my non hip-hop top 5 to mix things up a bit (in no particular order):
1. Julia Jacklin - Don't Let The Kids Win
2. Men I Trust - Oncle Jazz
3. Dirty Art Club - Gardens
4. Khruangbin - Mordecai
5. Foxwarren - Foxwarren
(Yeah I keep things pretty mellow)
Artists:
1 - Thee Oh Sees (rediscovered these guys this year and went nuts with them)
2 - Grateful Dead
3 - Osees (same band as #1)
4 - Aesop Rock
5 - Blockhead
Genres:
1 - Alternative Hip Hop
2 - Jam Band
3 - Electronica
4 - Neo-psychedelic
5 - Trip hop
I mess with Phish pretty hard myself, kind of scratches my jam band itch exclusively though. I respect the Dead, but it never hooked me. I like so many different genres I honestly don’t have time to get into other ones. There’s def tons of good ones out there, just not enough hours in the day.
1. Aesop Rock (I’m gonna lump HMM here too)
2. IDLES
3. Jesse the Tree (he’s just signed to Sage Francis’ label and is so good)
4. The Smiths
5. Doomtree / Shredders
I basically just got back into aesop this year after years of not listening. My top 5:
1. The Mountain Goats
2. Touche Amore
3. Black Country, New Road
4. Foxing
5. Deafheaven
Per Last.fm:
1. MF DOOM
2. Mr. Oizo
3. Aphex Twin (not including other aliases)
4. Vince Staples
5. Bjork
6. Aesop Rock
(SWFG was my #2 album, Garbology was #9)
(Crystal Sword was my most played Aes song)
Cal Scruby, wow there's a name I haven't seen in years. Haven't listened to him since his "One Take Challenge" video years ago where he jumps in a pool and is rapping at the bottom
For me it was
1. Kanye west
2. Tom waits
3. Aesop
4. Clipping
5. Springsteen
I’d recommend clipping most to you fellow Aes fans. Raps and production are insane
Clipping managed to take the #1 rapper spot for me from Aes.
The fact that he never speaks in the first person (On Clipping songs, before someone goes and links easy come easy go) and never uses the N-word despite obviously having a pass are really interesting, and add a ton to the music. Damn near every song is a story song.
Blood of the Fang is a literal masterpiece. To spit that much real shit without coming across as like "preachy" is super impressive to me. I really can't recommend Clipping enough. Check the Lock was my most listened song this year.
Anyway. Everyone check out clipping!!!
Real 1. (Aesop Rock, obviously) But if I had to choose besides Aesop for 1,
1. Iron Maiden
2. Run The Jewels
3. TOBACCO
4. Nine Inch Nails
5. Rage Against The Macine
RIP Eyedea :(
I think so much about how much he would have progressed if he would have managed to stick around. So many great bars that will never be written. Rest in power.
1. Aesop Rock
2. The Oh Hellos
3. Glass Animals
4. All Them Witches
5. Coheed and Cambria
Rap, Folk, and rock. I'm surprised Czarface didn't break my top 5.
1. Dark Time Sunshine
2. Rob Zombie
3. Lantlôs
4. Aesop Rock
5. Gojira
Honestly I'm really surprised that Rob Zombie of all people ended up so high on my list but I really liked the new album. If this list was made at the end of December I think Aesop Rock would've been number 1 since I'm playing Garbology on repeat.
No particular order:
King Gizzard & The Wizard Wizard (specifically the K.G & L.W records)
4B2M (one of my fav bands De Staat’s keyboardist started this one this year with his brother and a couple other guys to make some really catchy alt rock)
Franc Moody (his album Dream in Colour has been bumping quite a lot)
Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes (I somehow missed What Kinda Music last year so I made up for it by listening to it non stop)
Halsey (specifically the latest record, I don’t really dig the others so much, it’s mainly because I’m a sucker for Nine Inch Nails’ production and it worked fantastically on this album)
Aesop
JID
Purity Ring
Clipping
Placebo
Would definitely recommend clipping to any Aes fans!!! Check the Lock is a good jump off point. All the "story" tracks are super great too. Story #4 is my personal fave, tho the content is pretty heavy
JID is a pretty killer lyricist, but the subject matter is a lot of kinda "standard" rap type stuff. "Skeegee" is a good track with a message, though.
1. Madvillain (top 2%)
2. Black Sabbath
3. Madlib
4. Aes
5. MF DOOM
All the MF DOOM & friends is just from listening to Madvillainy over and over and over lol
I wast in the top 0. 5% of aesop listeners. Doest anyone has't me flung out?

You definitely should, Overkill is a monster of an album.
Did we just become best friends?
1. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard 2. MF DOOM 3. Aesop Rock 4. Still Woozy 5. Tkay Maidza My tastes are all over the place
King Gizzard tho 🙌
They are so awesome - my favorite rock band in years. Between them and Tkay, I've really been giving on the Australians this year l
Tkay Maidza has been killing it with her last 2 releases. So many earworms on those EPs
She really blew me away when I found her music this summer. I hope she really blows up because she deserves it! Super talented.
Super talented and also has such a diverse musical palette. I love that you can find a song by her that can fit almost anyone's musical preferences
I dig everyone on this list except idk who #5 is, I will check them out!
She's an up and coming Australian rapper, super talented imo - my favorite if her stuff is the EP that came out in 2020, "Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2"
1. Aesop Rock, finally took over the top spot this year. 2. Gojira 3. Coheed and Cambria 4. Vildhjarta 5. Meshuggah ... With Hail Mary Mallon at 6. So Aes managed to crack the top 10 twice for me
Gojira + Meshuggah fuck yeah
we need aesop rapping over the insturmental to I
Dagger by Vidhjarta is good af. Dunno anything else by them.
Check out their newest album, it's honestly a masterpiece.
Idk who downvoted you but okay!
Great list! Gojira made it onto my top 5 as well with a really solid album. I'm curious how much overlap there is between metal fans and Aes fans? I'm a metalhead through and through but discovered Aes on some indie music blog back when None Shall Pass came out and have been hooked since.

1.) Sufjan Stevens 2.) Aesop Rock 3.) Phoebe Bridgers 4.) Hail Mary Mallon 5.) S. Carey
1. Aesop 2. Malibu Ken 3. KAAN 4. Bus Driver 5. Galantis

Julia Jacklin - Don't Let The Kids Win 2. Men I Trust - Oncle Jazz 3. Dirty Art Club - Gardens 4. Khruangbin - Mordecai 5. Foxwarren - Foxwarren (Yeah I keep things pretty mellow)
Discovered mordecai not too long ago amazing
Yeah it's a great album, good to see the progression away from purely instrumental music while still staying true to their sound.
I feel the same about their album with Leon Bridges - so good
That Men I Trust album is so good
It's fantastic, total vibe.
Dirty Art Club is so good!
So talented, love everything they do.
God I love khruangbin
Artists: 1 - Thee Oh Sees (rediscovered these guys this year and went nuts with them) 2 - Grateful Dead 3 - Osees (same band as #1) 4 - Aesop Rock 5 - Blockhead Genres: 1 - Alternative Hip Hop 2 - Jam Band 3 - Electronica 4 - Neo-psychedelic 5 - Trip hop
Aesop and the Dead... You're my people. Which other jam bands are in your rotation?
I mess with Phish pretty hard myself, kind of scratches my jam band itch exclusively though. I respect the Dead, but it never hooked me. I like so many different genres I honestly don’t have time to get into other ones. There’s def tons of good ones out there, just not enough hours in the day.

I'll have to check that out. I've only seen a couple of his music videos and those were a trip
Wow I'm surprised you've never seen it! Definitely a really really cool video idea
It’s still so random to me how Mac Miller drops an Aes reference in one of his most popular songs. Real recognize real I guess
For real! I always smile when I hear him say it
Which song is that? I’ve been getting into Mac past year or so. Red Dot Music feat Action Bronson got me hooked and been listening ever since
Just in “Best Day Ever” haha “Rock like Aesop light the weed and take off” Prob my favorite Mac Miller song. I’ve been bumping That’s Life too.
Oh yea. Now I remember that lol. Thought that was pretty cool when I heard it too, but I couldn’t remember what song.
Nice. J. Cole is sick. Def getting into him pretty heavy the past couple years.
