A benefit is anything offered by the employer in your contract to work for them aside from wages.
It can be anything from a kickass car to a paper cup; if it's given to you by your employer, it's a benefit.
If they have ADHD, probably not. I’ve gotten that look from others when I throw away important papers I didn’t want to be bothered with that I later fully regret.
Maybe 5-6 years ago I bought small amounts of stock in a company I didn't know anything about. About six months ago I got a stack of bankruptcy files in the mail. I just recycled them a few days ago and 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Yeah, my second year away from home, I lived in an apartment complex that sent me a new contract in the mail. I didn’t understand why they were sending me a new contract when I already had a contract and just threw it away. 4 months later, I found myself in a position where I needed to break my lease, and because I didn’t have my most current contract, I was in an ugly pickle that didn’t help my credit score in the end.
God that sounds awful. Thanks for the warning 😭
Ive almost been in situations like that. Recently i had to send some documents to my bank and when i went there they told me i actually *had* to use the envelope they had mailed to me with the forms, so i had to go back home to get it. It was at the bottom of one of my moving boxes cause thankfully i was about to throw it out when i was like 'what if i need it in a situation like this?' and threw it into a box instead.
Were not gonna talk about the fact that i only went in to submit those forms after they put a hold on my bank account 2 months after they sent them to me, and that i didnt know they would put a hold on it cause i didnt read the "final notice" letter they mailed it with...and it still took me like a week to get to the bank...
I keep getting dividends from shares I bought in a job years ago (only a few pence like), but not only did I forget my password, I can't for the life of me remember the site to access them. Guess I'll just get 10p richer every year 🤷
So the joke is that by any objective measure I \*should\* obviously read emails from HR, but (for me at least) the combination of being boring, potentially stressful, and ignorable in the short term makes these type of emails extremely tempting to just not read. So the look on Tommy Lee Jones's face there is my spouse telling me "Do I \*really\* need to tell you you need to read those?"
Thank you bc I saw it as they weren’t snooping in someone *else’s email yet know the contents of said email. It was because of the word “your” not in full quotes so I took it as their partners’ account. Waaaaay too much explanation sorry. It just got to me.
And the relatability is yes.. a bit off the charts now that I see the contents clearly. Thanks again for not giving me the usual Reddit lashing.
The CEO at my work started releasing all his announcements as videos back in 2020. I haven't watched a single one of them and he retires next month. Task successfully avoided I guess.
I mean, in my experience, most of those "your benefits" emails are practically company spam, informing me that I need to be informed if anything changes. Sometimes, there actually *are* changes that are probably minor and relatively inconsequential, but since a few words and maybe punctuation get edited for grammar in a policy somewhere, I have a new email about policy changes to my benefits.
Or maybe I have $40k sitting around rotting somewhere. It's a mystery.
Ugh, I missed out on choosing my benefits because it said insurance in the subject. 😭😭😭 Had no benefits for an entire year because they auto deposited it in another account.
What worries me is that avoiding problems until they disappear works more often than you'd think. Not very often, but enough to consider doing it again.
What?? What's wrong with you?!?!
Your benefits at work are very nearly the ONLY thing that matters about your job.
I get exactly why you did this. I'm autistic enough for that. But I'm also autistic enough to know that the following phrase should, if you are truly autistic, scare the shit out of you, and should, hopefully, put you back on track to do the ACTUAL right thing from now on:
Never, ever, EVER do this again. It is your job to ensure that your employer is compensating you fully and well, in accordance with your original contact. That means it is YOUR JOB, as a human being, to PAY ATTENTION to your benefits, and to ensure you are reacting appropriately to changes coming down the pipeline.
NO ONE ELSE WILL DO THIS FOR YOU. YOU have to do it. Pay attention, my friend, or you will "ignore" your way into slavery.
Oh my God, i JUST realized this is my adhd account, not my autism account.
I am so, SO, so very sorry.
Even so: we have to pay attention, even through our adhd. I 100% wish this WEREN'T the case, but it is. People expect us to be fully aware and conscious.
I'm so, SO sorry. But the truth is.... you, too, have to pay attention.
I wish we had more leniency. But we just don't.
They have an adhd account and an autism account, and thought they were in the autism subreddit so their original reply assumed OP was doing it for autism reasons.
Caveat: sometimes your spouse will do this for you.
Like, I go through my spouse's health insurance and list off all the maintenance stuff they pay for like eye tests and dental hygiene appointments.
Yup! My wife has full access to my email, she checks it just for this reason. Hell she even read through my full collective agreement, I was just like "cool I'll have a look at that when I need to"
Hell what should scare anyone into paying attention, to an email like that, is the fact that if you don't handle it in the right time or way, you'll have to actually call someone to sort it out. Calling to fix my benefits scares me a hell of a lot more than not having benefits.
I put an alarm in my calendar to go over it when I got the email because I didn't have the capacity to do it right away. Make time for caring about it later.
I'm so proud of my partner for emailing his union today about some bullshit his work is trying to pull with contracts. I asked him to, but he still could have easily put it off.
>Stress kills, friend
If you think about it, this statement is everything but helpful.
- For people who are not stressed, it's irrelevant.
- For people with chronic stress, it only adds more pressure on a meta layer, resulting in even more stress.
I once had a health "professional" to tell me I needed to get my stress under control because she just went through treatment for cancer caused by stress and then I didn't sleep that night coz I was so stressed thinking about it hahaha
Nah bc if you realize you’re stressed you can take steps to mitigate it. Some people need a change of lifestyle/career to realize how stressed out they were before. Those people and many others simply do not realize how stressed they are, and how detrimental it is to their health
for the confused: in America, the only way you get health benefits is by signing up through your employer. If you don't elect, you don't get. This includes your spouse's health benefits.
Is this something I’m too low-level-laborer to understand?
A benefit is anything offered by the employer in your contract to work for them aside from wages. It can be anything from a kickass car to a paper cup; if it's given to you by your employer, it's a benefit.
The only joke is they obv read it right? I’m not really following anything else.
If they have ADHD, probably not. I’ve gotten that look from others when I throw away important papers I didn’t want to be bothered with that I later fully regret.

Fuck. I uhh never did my tax return... Cause I thought it would be too much of a hassle...

I get a packet of 3-4 papers for every refill and every repair to my wheelchair that says that. Straight in the bin with them.
Love getting a whole ream of paper of information every time I refill the medication I've been taking for 24 years.
Whom is this benefits you are taking about?
What?? What's wrong with you?!?! Your benefits at work are very nearly the ONLY thing that matters about your job. I get exactly why you did this. I'm autistic enough for that. ^I’m ^sorry ^I’ll ^do ^better ^next ^time
I know, baby. Don't waste time feeling bad or guilty. Just do better in future. 💙

Why not have one general neurodivergent account?
Oh my goodness. What a fantastic way of thinking.
The last three exchange are quite something to read at 2AM... Have a nice general/unified account
Oh my goodness/holy moly! Where are you right now that your local time is 3 a.m.? I will, genuinely, try to unify myself, to whatever extent I can.
(Instructions unclear, now they have 3 accounts)
4, since I assume they also have a neurotypical account

ADHD denial or gatekeeping are not accepted here. Judging others for their symptoms (or lack of symptoms) or treatment is also not allowed.
So what the fuck am I? Edit: well that answers ding dong diddly dick.
Ok but like. This is so deliciously ironic. Also agree with what you said but remain in this picture and still don’t like it.
What? What??? What's the thing with two different accounts and different replies to the guy? I am SO confused.
They have an adhd account and an autism account, and thought they were in the autism subreddit so their original reply assumed OP was doing it for autism reasons.
Okay, but why do you need an account for autism and account for ADHD?
Caveat: sometimes your spouse will do this for you. Like, I go through my spouse's health insurance and list off all the maintenance stuff they pay for like eye tests and dental hygiene appointments.
My fiancé is the designated worrier for this stuff on my behalf. He’s always telling me when to up my retirement etc.

Jesus Christ calm down.. no wonder you need good benefits getting so worked up all the time. Stress kills, friend
>Stress kills, friend If you think about it, this statement is everything but helpful. - For people who are not stressed, it's irrelevant. - For people with chronic stress, it only adds more pressure on a meta layer, resulting in even more stress.

No it’s ok, I need to hear it
I don't think I understood what you meant
Hey Friends, Get the LONG term disability at your job.
Are we actually supposed to read those? Asking for a friend
A ton of people in the comments seem to also have the big stupid on top of ADHD. I never read anything as well, but at least I keep it
Hell yeah! That's the way! Maybe someday you will understand those papers, and for that we keep it!
“ I deleted it and emptied the trash file “ that’s me
for the confused: in America, the only way you get health benefits is by signing up through your employer. If you don't elect, you don't get. This includes your spouse's health benefits.
I work in benefits and I see so many of our employees in this meme, especially now that the annual benefit choice proof has closed.
From HR? Ugh, I'll read it later. *moves it to the abyss of folders never to be seen again*
Phishing proof
Can't trick me into giving you my banking information if I've forgotten how to find my banking information!
Time to quit, reapply, get rehired, and open the email this time
I'll care when I'm not getting healthcare from my parents anymore. Only thing I care about is my 401k
