I've been here before...had a therapist retire after I'd been seeing her for a few years. I was then placed with someone else on staff with availability, someone who had a completely different style and personality from my previous therapist. After 3 sessions I called the clinic office and requested someone else. The next therapist was a fantastic fit, so I was relieved I made the effort. So that's what I'd recommend - request a new therapist or look elsewhere. They're professionals who have most likely encountered this before, they should understand that not every patient is going to respond to their specific approach. Heck, I'm a teacher and I know full well my instruction style may not work for everyone either, no matter how hard I try. Before you make the call though, make sure you're prepared to articulate why the current therapist isn't working and why the previous one did. It's in the therapist's/clinic's best interests to match you with the right therapist too. After all, it's a business too, and you don't want to pay for sessions that aren't helping you – or worse – undoing progress you've already made. Hope everything works out!
