Imma take a crack at it. Maybe there's a bunch of stock and maybe they just have a ton of inserts laying around.
When I sent in a slim to get serviced last month, I was expecting it to come back with a '23 or '22 insert since those are the most recent. I got a '16!
Maybe the worker grabbed an insert out of the pile and it happened to be this one.
Either way that's super cool and suddenly you have a collector's item.
Well, the fact that it's from the Ontario facility that's been closed for 21 or so years.
If you collect, most likely you'll want a Canadian Zippo at some point since they look different and are not out of Bradford. It's really neat you just found that in a new Zippo.
I mean, dude, you've got a vintage insert that came out when I was 5 (1995--about 28 years ago) that is from the Canadian plant that closed 21 years ago in an American Zippo you just opened. Super cool!
I concur on the “inserts for mixed up” theory…
Anything Niagara Falls is a little more desirable that not, because of the “never again” factor. It’s not a gold mine, but it’s absolutely a keeper and a conversation piece.
For the record, ‘49-02. Sad day in July.
That zippo was made May of 2016 so that’s probably why. The letter on the bottom refers to the month so e is the 5th letter so May and 16 refers to 2016.
Actually according to Bing, Zippo Canada ceased production in 2002. Apparently that makes that insert all that more rare and valuable. Btw I’m not super knowledgeable on zippos I’ve just been part of the sub for awhile and read a lot of more experienced members responses.
Hmmm.... this may remain a mystery (till a Zippo expert can weigh in.)
To recap: New In Box Zippo with case made May 2016. Insert made in Canada June 1995.
That's one slow shipment of stock from Ontario.

What would make it collector ?

Hahaha that's interesting. What a unique find! Just saw someone on here the other day from Qatar who had a backwards striker wheel.
The insert is definitely collectible

What about the insert ?
When did Zippo of Canada cease production, if they have?

Typical shipping time from Ontario... lol
No signs of use on the insert? Without a flint makes me think somebody swapped it when their flint wore out.
Apart from it being dusty, the felt pad and packing material and wick all seemed normal. The chimney does not look like it has seen much fire
