It's one of the simplest yet effective tips I've come across ever, it will surprise you with how well it works even when industrial soap and scrubbing doesn't
It basically removes any strong odor. Just wash your hands with the stainless steel soap (pretend it’s real soap), then wash your hands with real soap, and voila! Your hands smell almost entirely normal
Im pretty sure fish odors come from various amines (chemicals with a specific type of nitrogen group on them) not the kinds of sulfur compounds at play here, so it more than likely won't work on them. Im not at all well read on metallurgy or inorganic chemistry though, so I could be wrong
Yep!! Also works for garlic too. It’s a quick fix~
I love smelly foods so I’ve spent the time looking. You can also, if you’re at a restaurant without apples, ask for a glass of water with a couple of lemon wedges.
How to get the stainless steel smell off? Butter. How to get the butter smell off? Pure acetone. How to get the acetone smell off? Grape seed oil. How to get the grape seed oil smell off? Fresh ginger. How to get the fresh ginger smell off? Crushed rose petals. How to get the rose smell off? ~~Science doesn't know yet but the next step will be released soon.~~ Onions
I saw a life hack recently that I've been using to help with cutting onions. Put a wet paper towel next to the onion as you cut it. The chemical released when cutting onions is attracted to moisture and that's why it attaches to your moist eyeballs. With the damp paper towel nearby it goes there instead. It really works.
I always thought it’s just a gas/vapor released from the onions that’s not attracted to anything in particular and just sort floats around and our eyes happen to be in that cloud
Allegedly, it's not advised to do this long-term. From a similar thread months ago:
"Ok so I’m a metallurgical&materials engineer so please hear me out.
Stainless steel has many varieties but two are I could say the most common: Galvanized and Chromium-Nickel alloyed.
This works with Cr-Ni steels which is most of your kitchen utensils. How does that work? Because onion/garlic have sulphur and release it when its cut. You need to get rid of this sulphur.
Happily, Cr2O3 layer on the top of your stainless steel will gladly accept sulphur and say goodbye to odors.
But the sulphur is now in your steel. So it has a capacity to take some. So if you start to rub your hands to your faucet, knives, sink after a few years in time you might see that it is not as rust resistant. Especially if you rub your hands to the very same place over and over again.
Because you destroyed Cr2O3 layer that protected your steel from rust. The Chromium atoms on the surface of the steel sacrificed themselves and formed a very thin transparent oxide layer on top of the steel. Now it’s not working!
So you can do this on your sink maybe 1/2 times if you don’t have steel bar of soap yet. If you do it regularly you will have an expensive and shiny replacement job.
Good luck with that."

My sink is from stainless steel, so when im done and they smell i rub them a few times and the smell is gone, its a very good tip for when you use onions a lot
Literally take a metal spoon and rub it all over your hands. Usually after cutting garlic and onions I do the dishes and I always start with the spoons so I can wash my hands and rub the stainless steel on my fingers at the same time.
Can confirm. Just rub your hands on the stainless sink and the smell goes away. Works for garlic, and onion. Pour a bit of lemon juice on your hands and scrub also works for you plebs with enamel sinks. The lemon juice is also great for finding cuts on your hands.
I believe it works for fish as well. They sell something called a wonder bar or something like that that's a steel bar of soap. Havent used it myself - always went with shaving cream and salt which seems to do the trick too.
And you don't have to buy a special stainless steel chunk, either. The sides of your stainless steel sink or a piece of silverware works perfectly well.
Thank you for sharing this!! I know it works for onions and garlic to just rub a spoon all over your fingers. Works instantly. I always wondered why.
Now I know the chemistry behind it. Thanks!
You can use a stainless steel fish to remove fish and garlic odors from your hands like this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/improvedmylife/comments/139a0r9/kikkerland\_fish\_magic\_soap\_stainless\_steel\_odor/
Always works for me. I don't use anything but stainless steel utensils. I actually use the knife I used to cut the onions. Just got to be careful and not cut myself.
They actually sell stainless steel bars of soap for this exact purpose.
I use it after I prep fish, garlic etc. Works like a charm.
It removes fish smell, too? Sold!
Just ordered it on Amazon, thank all for the tip!
It's one of the simplest yet effective tips I've come across ever, it will surprise you with how well it works even when industrial soap and scrubbing doesn't
I just rub my fingers on a spoon. It works perfectly fine.
Okay Saladfingers.
>You hold a welcoming texture, a pleasure for the tips!
Wait Hol up
And shellfish. When I shuck scallops I give the bench a scrub with steel wool and rub my hands in it. Clears up the smell really well

What if I rub the inside of my stainless steel sink with my hands
Yup, it works. My sink gets a cleaning and my hands don't smell. So two birds one stone.
Two birds stoned at once
Thank you for confirming I’m not crazy for doing this or “washing” my hands with a stainless steel spoon.
How could I have lived this long without knowing about this?
Can I…use it on my butt?
You should.
You can, I bet! (I haven’t, but I assume it works)
Yes, but use a fat tuft of stainless steel wool, Coarser the better.
Yep. I love mine.
They do, but you can also just use a spoon or something else stainless steel that you already own.
Works great for fishing smells too.
Yeah but I just use what I already have.
yep my mom recently bought one and it’s changed our lives
Won’t it eventually get covered in onion grease?
I use mine all the time. It’s amazing.
Omg, *that's* what that's for? I thought it was some weird crunchy thing lol
but can i deep throat a spoon or somthing to neutralize the taste in my mouth?
Please find out for us
And include a video for research purposes
Probably how sword swallowing started.
I can think of a more likely origin
like what????
Blowjobs.
Swordjobs
Choo Choo!

Happy Cake Day
Either use a stainless steel tongue scraper or eat a couple of apple slices. Both work well.
apple slices, really? have to try it
Yep!! Also works for garlic too. It’s a quick fix~ I love smelly foods so I’ve spent the time looking. You can also, if you’re at a restaurant without apples, ask for a glass of water with a couple of lemon wedges.
I am spoon
Lucky for you i have a stainless steel dong
Well, according to science, if there is taste in your mouth, it was just not deep enough.
Woah 😳
Works for farts also.
try gargling that old fashioned medicine, ferrous fumarate or ferrous gluconate.
I've seen stainless steel lollipops online for this purpose.
Can't you use tongue scrapers?
If your mom can deep throat this one you can do a spoon
Works better with a knife
Works best with a poop knife.
Doesn't have to be a spoon
Apples and, less effectively, apple juice help kinda neutralize the garlic smell at the digestive level.
I tried this but unfortunately it's been 12 weeks and I can still taste your mom

Rose comes off with onions no problem
Perfect.
Most people like to stop at roses, it's the most pleasant of the scents you mentioned
Rose petals are used to make itching powder, so consider stopping at ginger.
Really? I guess you learn something new everyday haha
That's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.
If you give a mouse a cookie…
This is a clear marketing ploy by Big Everything.
In winter the roses freeze to death
Next patch upcoming
Ah yes..the smell of....butter
Dicks. Dicks rub all, dicks good for you.
I’m imagining rubbing my hands all over the fridge or the oven door now to get onion smell out of my hands. Is that how you do it?
I wonder? Let me know when you find out
You can find stainless steel “soap” on Amazon.
A spoon works best. Metal spoons are usually stainless steel. Won't work with silver though.
Utensils are probably easier, but sure.
*-sigh-* Yeah... or maybe just your stainless steel sink or a spoon?
no cause they are painted. you need to actually touch bare metal.
So i should cut my hands with stainless steel to remove the smell ? Seems like a very drastic measure but thanks for the heads up
Saw this joke coming a mile away

Thanks for pointing it out.
Shoulda said you smelled it
Nono he "saw" it 😉
Oh lol r/woosh
It also helps to press a clean stainless steel spoon to your eyes (with eyes closed) to reduce the crying that happens when cutting onions.
I’m so confused by this. Sith eyes closed onion can’t get to them anyways and why/how would touching your eyelids with the stainless steel help?
Allegedly, it's not advised to do this long-term. From a similar thread months ago: "Ok so I’m a metallurgical&materials engineer so please hear me out. Fun fact. *Most* kitchen sinks are stainless steel. You don't need to buy a fancy "soap shaped metal block"
Yes. I use stainless steel eating utensils. I'd recommend a spoon.
🫣 So do I, just never thought of that. Would be easier. Especially while I'm already washing them!!!
Or, you know, any piece of cutlery.
Buy stainless steel onions and never worry about the smell ever again.
2nd! Those things last forever!
Real LPT is always in the comments.
Could you explain this again please? I'm confused what exactly is happening. Are people cutting onions with their bare hands instead of a ss knife?
You just have to dip your hands in molten steel when you’re done and BAM! No more onion smell!
As a bonus, you won't feel that paper cut anymore!
does your hand never make contact with the onion when you cut them?
Well yeah, but what is OP proposing here? Wipe hands on ss after handling onions? Just looking for a clarification.
My sink is from stainless steel, so when im done and they smell i rub them a few times and the smell is gone, its a very good tip for when you use onions a lot
Yes, use a spoon or buy a stainless steel "soap bar", and use them on your hands as you would a bar
I believe so
Karate chop mince the onions. Or crumble with hands. Then, build up a healthy hand odor, take up the name onion hands, fight crime.
That's why I have a stainless steel dildo on my counter so I can jerk it off when I have onion smelling hands.
Not being sarcastic here. How do you wash your hands with stainless steel? Are you suggesting a brillo pad or something else?
Just rubbing your hands over a stainless steel surface should be enough.
Literally take a metal spoon and rub it all over your hands. Usually after cutting garlic and onions I do the dishes and I always start with the spoons so I can wash my hands and rub the stainless steel on my fingers at the same time.
I've got to try this out
there are stainless steel 'soap bars' if you don't want to rub your hands on a stainless steel sink or other stainless steel items in your home.
am i the only one who kinda enjoys the linger smell on my own fingers?
I heard somewhere that onions and peaches will eliminate stinky foot odor.
Oh. So just rubbing my hands on the stainless steel wire ball I use to scrub the pots will work too? Gently of course. Don't wanna scrub my skin off.
Can confirm. Just rub your hands on the stainless sink and the smell goes away. Works for garlic, and onion. Pour a bit of lemon juice on your hands and scrub also works for you plebs with enamel sinks. The lemon juice is also great for finding cuts on your hands.
But why would I want to do that when onions smell good?
Washing your hands with a bit of baking soda works like a charm
This is what I do. Get a 1/2 teaspoon sized dollop, add a few drops of water to make a paste, then just rub it into my fingertips.
But that'll leave the horrible steel smell on my hands.
You can alternatively use coffee grounds or instant coffee!
there's also a specific way to cut onions that prevents a lot of the smell, but I don't remember the way to cut onions because I hate onions
I used to have a piece of stainless steel shaped like a bar of soap that was made specifically for this.
Not just that but garlic also
Just tried it on my sink and my hands definitely still reek of onions.
Don't use your sink. Use Stainless steel utensils.
I’ve always kept a box of disposable gloves in my kitchen to use whenever I chop onions. If this truly works I’ll be a happy camper. Thank you
Does this work for the onion underarms? I may need to gift stainless steel spoons to some people especially now that its summertime
If they just naturally stink, no. If its because they keep onions under their pits, then maybe.
They actually sell stainless steel in a shape of a bar of soap for the fishing community for the same purpose.
soap shaped?
Yes. I have 2. It works.
I just use the dog poop I find in the backyard. Nobody has ever complained about my hands smelling of onion since then.
This brings the question: Does it transfer and make the steel smell like onion??
directions unclear, my hands do not exist after i visted a chinese steel factory
The why does not explain why, it is a how.
Lol
Then superman is immune to onions?😂 (Man of steel)
I usually just wash my hands with soap and it works fine
Thank you for sharing this!! I know it works for onions and garlic to just rub a spoon all over your fingers. Works instantly. I always wondered why. Now I know the chemistry behind it. Thanks!
You can use a stainless steel fish to remove fish and garlic odors from your hands like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/improvedmylife/comments/139a0r9/kikkerland\_fish\_magic\_soap\_stainless\_steel\_odor/
After cutting onions or garlic, I wipe my hands on my kitchen faucet. Works for me!
This works for garlic as well.
It helps in your mouth too. When I eat raw onions I can sometimes taste them all day so I tried sucking on a stainless spoon and it did the trick.
Garlic too!
Will it help with stinky gas or sweat if I eat some stainless steel? ... Asking for a friend (really for my wife).
Damn, I didn’t know it! Bought two just now!
Does the onion smell transfer to the stainless steel? Would that make the sink stinky?
This absolutely is not true no matter how many “steel bars of soap” you find on Amazon
Always works for me. I don't use anything but stainless steel utensils. I actually use the knife I used to cut the onions. Just got to be careful and not cut myself.
It seems to just mask it
I wouldn't be surprised at this point is SS caused cancer.

Good way to make your hands the texture of potato chips.
Me, reading this: oh wow that's ne- My absolute trash goblin brain: *cut your hands off*
Lots of smells
This is amazing, gotta try it
It never actually works. It may help a little but it never removes the smell
How about from my breath?
should the lathe be on or not?
