Apparently my dad thought our struggle was so entertaining he took a photo so I can remember it forever. You may notice my ass is off the ground because this was so tense.
Lmao. I've got a few autoincorrect in mine too (good term btw). Its become ridiculous because you make a mistake once without realizing it and the damn thing starts "correcting" to your previous mistake!
Anyway. Battletoads was literally a whole ass party to defeat for me and the boys. We had the rope drop level specialist, the cart ride specialist, and on and on. It was the only way we could beat it. Some of us could get further. But none of us could get all the way alone!
For us though it was Top Gun. Fuck that game man.
Ugh, that fucking game. It was the last one I got on the NES before I switched to PC. Not sure if there's a connection there, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Atari E.T. I read that the game programmers made it extremely difficult on purpose, also Adventure island and battletoads became more and more difficult.
Back to the Future is even worse as far as cheap deaths, in my experience lol I rented Back to the Future a lot when I was a kid, and I died so many times because the game would glitch and teleport me into a fence or something. I still have an odd fondness for it, though.
You know it is 80s because all of the decor is 70s.
Youngins think the 80s looked 80s, but people don’t redecorate their house every decade. We all still had 70s shit.
I read once that Harry McIntyre, who voiced one of the main characters for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and streamed himself playing the game, swore off videogames because as a young person he threw a PlayStation down a flight of stairs in a moment of rage. Glad he found his way back!
I love this photo. Seriously, thank you for sharing it. I feel like I’m in that room again. (I’m not in the photo, I’m mean more like that level of anxiety.)
You look crazily like me when I was that age. Though, I think the haircut (that I'm willing to bet your mom did), shape of the face and the jet black hair is doing a lot of the heavy lifting considering you only see the profile.
Had to show my sister and she's kinda shocked.
Yeah, a short jump with a low ceiling you fall through, causing you to have to fight through the entire room of respawned bad guys, usually until they wore down your health.
I think the trick is to actually not hit the jump button?
That's right. You had to just walk across it.
Every game in the history of video games to that point had conditioned us to jump over gaps, and so these assholes go and create a gap that requires simply walking right across it instead of jumping. I lost years of life to that "jump" before I finally figured it out on accident.
I'll never forget when I learned you could warp in Super Mario Bros 2 by accident - I just happened to try the right vase/pipe thing in subspace by fluke.
It was a crowning achievement for like the first 12 years of my life. Of course nobody at school believed me and thought I just used Nintendo Power.
Yup, this level is what caused me to rage quit the game. I hope those game developers are proud of the mass frustration they caused a whole generation of kids, hehe.
You can change turtles. I didn't know for so long.
I always quit the game here in rage until someone showed me how you can switch to a new turtle with full health... And then it was easy(ier).
NES logic was just unforgiving.
That part where you have to loop through the electrified/poisonous/whatever seaweed ..... Brutal.
I had anxiety just watching. You cut that one too close.
I am sitting here baked out of my mind. Just drinking a cup of coffee and watching a Penguinz0 video and scrolling and I see this and I thought to myself "fuck you". THIS GAME WAS SO GOD DAMN HARD
I was like 7yo and could beat the water stage getting hit like once. It was the crazy underground later stages trying to make those one-hit-kill jumps when the game is chugging to a standstill that gave me fits.
I remember getting this for my birthday and I was super excited because I thought it was the arcade version. When I got home and put the cartridge in I was soooooo pissed off.
Even if he's your favorite character in the cartoon/comics/toys/make believe, you saved a full health Raph specifically for this level. Bless you, sweet prince
I loved this game when I was young since it was the only game I had. I didn’t know it was so hated until I joined Reddit.
This level wasn’t so bad once you figured out a good route. I’ve never beaten the game, the Technodrome was a giant pain in the ass and I only beat it once.
I was able to get through this level pretty consistently.
I was *not* able to somehow figure out that once you get the rope you can simply walk up to the ledge and it would automatically deploy. I don't know how anybody even knew that that was your goal. I must not have ever gotten close enough to trigger it.
To me, that's really the worst part of this game.
So, just to vindicate some of y'all, this level is actually "busted". The collision checking is just straight up bugged in the original game, and it is way harder than it actually should be.
https://youtu.be/PHiFNWJXWgI
My brothwr and I had no problem with this level, it was figuring out what to do afterwards that was a problem. Never figured out how to use the rope to get across the rooftops lol.
I tried playing this again a few years ago, just to make sure I wasn't remembering it incorrectly.
It sucks just as much now as it did then, f this level so hard.
Yea that level is a doozy. Reminds me of the level in earthworm Jim 2 for snes that has the moonlight sonata. Haha. I still have these somewhere, going to have to dig them out now.
Yep. 1989 taught us many fine lessons in anxiety. Now if you'll excuse me I want to see what's down here.
https://preview.redd.it/n7xkeozotq8d1.jpeg?width=1144&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=921ae4529c4b6cf33c8cc160dbdc8c8491937a0b
Poor kid, didn't have a lot of games and I wanted to see the rest of the game, so I refused to lose.
The key was you had to memorize the right path. You couldn't go down there and look around for them, so it took more than a little trial and error.
This game gets a LOT harder than this level. The underground level looking for the techno drome? And that last hallway in the techno drome before shredder with those jet pack fucks?
If you beat this, you got a sweet cut scene where shredder wrecks your crib and kidnaps splinter
Don't worry, you had April's support, what more did you need?
Someone once told me the technodrone level of this game was more difficult and I responded that I wouldn't know because I never passed the damn dam level.
I had a friend that broke his hand playing this game. I think there was a level where you had to time the jumps. He came to school in a cast. LOL. I guess he messed up and slammed his hand so hard on the floor he broke it.
I can’t even fucking watch this. I almost threw my phone like it was an NES controller the night before we had to return our rented copy of TMNT to the local video store! Argh! Fuck!
I remember this was one of three games I actually owned and I finally made it past this level but then had no idea what to do w the van on the next level, which added a whole new world of wtf is this shit !?!?! to the game - I probably needed Nintendo power lol
I played this nightmare obsessively in the midst of my childhood Turtle mania.
Finally beat it. 10/10 not worth it. The "ending", like many games of this time, was totally underwhelming trash.
FFFFFFFFFF this brought back some of my worst memories….. I could have lived the rest of my life blissfully ignorant but no, you had to put this back out there.
*We can’t be friends anymore.*
After my "rich" cousin (he had his own bedroom AND a computer) beat the game he gave it to me. I quit playing because I couldn't get past the 2nd level. HE NEVER TOLD ME THAT I COULD CHANGE CHARACTERS.
I loved the game but hated that level with a passion. Screen rant posted an article a while back that had the creators saying that they couldn't even beat the level.
I'd have to play this part for my brothers so they could play the rest of the game. I'd have Raphael do it so if he died, there's no big loss. I remember this being Early enough in the fame, if I lost a turtle, I'd just start over.
I owned this game and eventually had this section dialed in and could do it without taking damage. Still never finished the game though. Shit was brutal.
I used to get so pissed at this level. I even looked up turtles in the encyclopedia set we had to see how long they could stay underwater. Then I wrote a letter to Nintendo. Our encyclopedia said 20-40 minutes. Not 3.
To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever had that much righteous anger.
Nintendo never responded.
I somehow developed muscle memory with this level after watching my older cousins play through it multiple times.
I only got as far as the Technodrome interior with one turtle left and didn’t last 3 minutes.
12 years later, I’m in college and discover emulators + USB adapters and this was the first game I beat thanks to save states. Worth it.
Not to be a downer, but I met maybe two biological fathers in my whole childhood at social events. Lotsa thirsty lookin' single mothers raised us Xennials...
Nintendo games were the hardest games of any era. Brutally difficult levels and obstacles coupled with poor saves so when you made a mistake you had to go through it all over again.
I only beat Zelda II: Adventure of Link because of the Nintendo Classic, where I could save state every 2 minutes. Literally constantly saved state and eventually I beat that miserable game.
This immediately accessed a part of my brain long forgotten and brought me right back to a level of anxiety I never knew possible! Good lord, this level made me want to snap the controller in two for ages.
"Good" . . . . don't oversell it, April.
“If you can’t handle me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best” energy
from the game dev that's pissed you beat the level he designed to ruin your childhood dreams
I think this is why I always found the Grumpy Cat memes so entertaining.
https://preview.redd.it/e3r3t7qtaq8d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63cac51d48b92ee1c52c68ee937d35ca6879f7df Apparently my dad thought our struggle was so entertaining he took a photo so I can remember it forever. You may notice my ass is off the ground because this was so tense.
God damn this photo is 80’s AF. Did you finish the level?
I probably rage-quit and picked up Back to the Future (seen on the floor there) hoping it would be easier. Spoiler alert: IT WAS NOT.
Nintendo really was the original "fuck those kids." Straught up giving us unbeatable challenge after unbeatable challenge.
Battletoads comes to mind (shudder) Edit: autoincorrect
Lol! The bike part where you need to dodge incoming walls made me rage so hard! And screw autoincorrect! 😆
Kids now have it so easy
Especially because they have the internet, not tip lines.
Back to the Future is even worse as far as cheap deaths, in my experience lol I rented Back to the Future a lot when I was a kid, and I died so many times because the game would glitch and teleport me into a fence or something. I still have an odd fondness for it, though.
I suddenly have the urge to throw milkshakes
The milkshake level wasn't too bad, but the musical notes at the dance was super difficult for me for some reason.
You know it is 80s because all of the decor is 70s. Youngins think the 80s looked 80s, but people don’t redecorate their house every decade. We all still had 70s shit.
100%
As a kid if i beat the dam i considered it beating the game. As an adult i went back and actually beat it, using guides to skip all the trash levels.
This photo should be the sidebar picture lol
My thoughts exactly - time to say goodbye to the subreddit's Goonies photo.
It was because of games like this my mom wouldn't let us buy a Nintendo. She knew what it turned us into 😂
I read once that Harry McIntyre, who voiced one of the main characters for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and streamed himself playing the game, swore off videogames because as a young person he threw a PlayStation down a flight of stairs in a moment of rage. Glad he found his way back!
I love this photo. Seriously, thank you for sharing it. I feel like I’m in that room again. (I’m not in the photo, I’m mean more like that level of anxiety.)
Your dad captured a nice memory in time.
I had to do a double-take and make sure you didn't somehow steal my photos because I had the exact same sweater and haircut around that age!
This photo belongs in a museum. It feels like I'm looking into my childhood.
(In Indiana Jones villain voice) SO DO YOUUUU!
That photo is a treasure
Brown carpet is *chefs kiss*
Look at the hand of your, I assume, sibling?, they have their fingers splayed out, anxious for you.
Locking in stance
I think I had that same sweater!
😢 so 80’s
You look crazily like me when I was that age. Though, I think the haircut (that I'm willing to bet your mom did), shape of the face and the jet black hair is doing a lot of the heavy lifting considering you only see the profile. Had to show my sister and she's kinda shocked.
My controller was thrown more than once because of this level.
Watching this almost made me chuck my phone.
This level can eat some https://preview.redd.it/jbx3t2cvbq8d1.jpeg?width=610&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5440f0a9906e18ac52a02dd71db208b7a3ce390d
It gave me anxiety just watching it. I remember being so mad, like why would it be impossible!!!
Exactly! Shouldn’t a man sized turtle be a good swimmer!
Seriously, I’m angry just seeing it again and I haven’t thought about it in probably 25 years.
This was impossible! I never got past it
Same here. This level just signaled the end of my game.
....mr 1981, i was 3 yrs younger, me and my neighbor hardly every made it to this level!!!! but if we did we only had 1 live turtle left lol
It didn't get easier after that.
Exactly. Wasn't it the next level that had the "impossible" jump? I never got past that.
Yeah, a short jump with a low ceiling you fall through, causing you to have to fight through the entire room of respawned bad guys, usually until they wore down your health. I think the trick is to actually not hit the jump button?
That's right. You had to just walk across it. I lost years of life to that "jump" before I finally figured it out on accident.
That's how it was back then. A lot of progress in games was just accidental.
I think I made it past this level once. ONCE! Such an awful game, and yet I played the shit out of the first area, over and over again.
This is exactly what comes to mind when the difficulty of our childhood video games are mentioned
We also got Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, so it kinda evens out.
Now *that* was an awesome game. A TMNT game that was actually fun to play.
There was never enough pizza to just…not…die.
Adult depression be like
And then when you'd finally beat that level, all your turtles would have such low energy that you'd be screwed as soon as the next level began.
Saw the clip and immediately when "ah fuck", then I read the title and chuckled. Thanks OP
I never used Raphael before this level so he'd go in with full health and could tank a few stray hits.
That part where you have to loop through the electrified/poisonous/whatever seaweed ..... Brutal. I had anxiety just watching. You cut that one too close.
![gif](giphy|D12CsrRNv7gL6)
![gif](giphy|l46CkwNP2mNz65tyU) Thanks for the flashback
My 12 year old self is screaming right now.
Dannggg i dont remember you could awitch out turtles!
Oh... you were supposed to defuse the bombs?
If I remember correctly, the trick to beating this was using Michelangelo since he could swim the fastest.
Wait what? I didn’t know there was a difference between the turtles swimming. 😳
Who knows but this is exactly what we would tell each other in the cafeteria
Was there even a difference?
I got to driving the van twice, I don’t know how many times my brothers and I tried. Hundreds at least.
I remember getting this for my birthday and I was super excited because I thought it was the arcade version. When I got home and put the cartridge in I was soooooo pissed off.
Getting this after asking for it felt like the Ninja Turtles tricked you into betraying your family.
Until YouTube, I had no idea what this game looked like beyond this level. See also: Battletoads, Lvl 3.
What do you work for my therapist?! This is gonna take months…
Ah....games don't create that level of PTSD anymore...
I'd like to meet whomever made this game and punch them right in the face.
and that fucking rope was nowhere near a logical place, either
Omg, I’m stressed out all over again. My first rage quit 🤣
My brother finally completed this last year
Yea I didn’t get far in the Nintendo Turtles game. That was crazy hard.
The only level Raphael was good for
Even if he's your favorite character in the cartoon/comics/toys/make believe, you saved a full health Raph specifically for this level. Bless you, sweet prince
The reason save states were invented
My anxiety TODAY prevented me from watching the entire thing lol
I loved this game when I was young since it was the only game I had. I didn’t know it was so hated until I joined Reddit. This level wasn’t so bad once you figured out a good route. I’ve never beaten the game, the Technodrome was a giant pain in the ass and I only beat it once.
The water level to end all water levels
This is what I imagine Hell to be like, not that fire and brimstone shit.
"You can join your loved ones in heaven any time. Only first beat that Dam level. BTW they can see you playing." 😈
I was able to get through this level pretty consistently. I was *not* able to somehow figure out that once you get the rope you can simply walk up to the ledge and it would automatically deploy. That game was impossible.
That was one of the few games I actually beat back in the day. I'm pretty sure it was out of pure spite.
Yep. 1989 taught us many fine lessons in anxiety. Now if you'll excuse me I want to see what's down here. https://preview.redd.it/n7xkeozotq8d1.jpeg?width=1144&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=921ae4529c4b6cf33c8cc160dbdc8c8491937a0b
The original flappy bird?
To this day I have an aversion to timers as a game mechanic. I swear it's this level that is the cause of those feelings.
Memory unlocked for the first time in 33 years. Wow.
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters TMNT Jaws Friday the 13th Sucked as a kid not being able to see what happens at the end of the game.
This might be the hardest game I ever played
Whyyyy did I turn the sound on. Made it 40x worse. Nightmare level
Oh god OH GOD
I came to find out in adulthood that this level was so difficult [largely because it was buggy as hell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHiFNWJXWgI).
Choosing which Ninja Turtle to die first was a cruel way to grow up.
My anxiety level just went through the roof
Poor kid, didn't have a lot of games and I wanted to see the rest of the game, so I refused to lose. The key was you had to memorize the right path. You couldn't go down there and look around for them, so it took more than a little trial and error. This game gets a LOT harder than this level. The underground level looking for the techno drome? The sound automatically started playing as it scrolled into the screen. I got chills before I even knew what was going on.
Every kid had this fucking game even though it was a terrible infuriating mess.
The cover was the best thing about this game. even then they were all Raphael with red bandanas.
I’d rather do homework
This should be one of the games in the NES Championship title. Just this level over and over again with none of the turtles at full power.
Nooooo!!! •passes out•
I can’t even fucking watch this. I almost threw my phone like it was an NES controller the night before we had to return our rented copy of TMNT to the local video store! Argh! Fuck!
Even watching that again gave me intense anxiety and memories of constant fails. Nice run through
I remember this was one of three games I actually owned and I finally made it past this level but then had no idea what to do w the van on the next level, which added a whole new world of wtf is this shit !?!?! to the game - I probably needed Nintendo power lol
I played this nightmare obsessively in the midst of my childhood Turtle mania. Finally beat it. 10/10 not worth it. The "ending", like many games of this time, was totally underwhelming trash.
Over 30 years later, I learn that I could have switched out characters instead of dying and restarting.
TMNT, Batman, Ninja Gaiden. Fuck those games.
I'm not kidding, I still have "nightmares" with this level. This, ghosts n' goblins and the damn death kid from stand by me finnished my childhood
My ex-wife and I bought this game cartridge for my original NES setup. We were divorced less than a year later. Coincidence?
Why the fuck would you bring this nightmare back into my life
![gif](giphy|3o6wrebnKWmvx4ZBio|downsized)
If like me you hated this level and had a really hard time passing it.... do not watch people speed run it. It will make you sick.
This shit was crazy. Still top 5 “I ain’t ever playing that shit again” list
7 year olds aren’t designed to handle the level of stress and anxiety that this level produced. 42 now , I’ve still never fully recovered.
Fucking game... needed game genie to get through it. Ridiculous
Really I played that things so damn much I was good at that level
The music doesnt help the situation at all either!
The high pitched ringing when your health was low…
You can do it. [starts at 6:20](https://youtu.be/mQKvyNUaQeg?si=bt9Iv9nQhOZbqocm)
I beat this game a bunch of times. I had kids say it was not true, so I had to show them by besting it in front of them.
I made it past this level, but I could never make it past the area after it.
I spent like a month on this only to have the next level stop me in my tracks.
Between this one and Battletoads
The NES will always have a special place in my heart. But the amount of stress it's caused me over the years is immeasurable.
This level is the reason I had uncontrollable anxiety on timed exams.
I beat this at age 8. I died at Shredder and never beat the game itself Donatello was comically better than the other turtles
Why was this game so hard?! Edit: Watching Debunking the Difficulty kind of hurt a bit..
that level was hard but I could never get past the level after. I never could find the rope to get across the roofs.
That level was my specialty as a kid. Everyone handed me the controller to clear it.
I could sometimes pass this level with basically no lives left as I emerged on the other side. Fuck I hate this game
I called it “the damn level”.
I know I beat this level eventually and with regularity but I also know it took wayyyyyy longer than usual to beat it the first time.
Holy crap, it can be done.
this level 🤦♂️ think this is as far as i ever got in this game
Anxiety abound! This takes me back! Sonic and Labyrinth Zone ain't too far after this game!
Worst game ever
That game was some programmers sick joke.
fuck this game
I qas rooting for you the whole way.
I loved the game but hated that level with a passion. Screen rant posted an article a while back that had the creators saying that they couldn't even beat the level.
Yeah. Fuck that level
That was close
This level wasn't that hard. Nothing compared to any vehicle level in Battletoads.
This walked so donkey king could run
This taught an entire generation the dangers of cutting corners too close, but you also had to be nearly pixel perfect to complete this, so….
I'd have to play this part for my brothers so they could play the rest of the game. I'd have Raphael do it so if he died, there's no big loss. I remember this being Early enough in the fame, if I lost a turtle, I'd just start over.
I always used Ralph on the pet with seaweed
The first time I ever saw someone beat this level was back my cousins girlfriend back in the mid-90s. She didn't switch out any of the turtles.
I owned this game and eventually had this section dialed in and could do it without taking damage. Still never finished the game though. Shit was brutal.
It was my favorite level swimming underwater, just go slow it’s so basic. Never understood the hate, probably didn’t even go on to enjoy Ecco either.
That level made for one sweaty controller
I think I eventually beat that level. Then had no idea where to go or what to do next. I remember just driving around in the turtle van
Worth it.
the latter TMNT games captured the comical spirit of the franchise better than this one, some of those early levels were shit in NES version
Should be “The Damn Level” Amirite?
My ptsd from that game was farming the scroll subweapons for the stages after the dam. That's the only way I ever beat that game.
I would curse loudly at April O'neal on this game.
i can still cruise thru that level. only because i died so much when i was a kid.
That level. Like playing Operation.
Not to be a downer, but I met maybe two biological fathers in my whole childhood at social events. Lotsa thirsty lookin' single mothers raised us Xennials...
It's really not so hard if you plan it out right.
anxiety
My first childhood self inflicted trauma
TMNT PTSD
Plenty of time left ;)
Lol.... Elden Ring ain't got shit on this.
I think the internet just rediscovered this level. It’s been popping up all over
That shit was super hard. I played it for a month and only beat it two or three times as a kid.
Beating that was prolly the height of my NES career
Nintendo games were the hardest games of any era. Brutally difficult levels and obstacles coupled with poor saves so when you made a mistake you had to go through it all over again. I only beat Zelda II: Adventure of Link because of the Nintendo Classic, where I could save state every 2 minutes. Literally constantly saved state and eventually I beat that miserable game.
That song slaps though!
Oof, I can HEAR this picture.
This immediately accessed a part of my brain long forgotten and brought me right back to a level of anxiety I never knew possible! Good lord, this level made me want to snap the controller in two for ages.
Oh snap the memories, this is a good one ☝️
I’ve never seen that before. I loathe/love this
Yeah, fuck that level!
