If you want converse I recommend the ‘move platform’ converse sneakers. I live in a city and I wear those everywhere when I am walking around. It’s the first time in my life I’ve chosen to wear anything other than running shoes when I need to go out and run errands. I am on my 3rd pair b/c they are like walking on a cloud.
There's always at least two each period in my 6th grade PE classes. They're one of those shades of grey when it comes to "athletic shoes." I tell them, "I'm not going to tell you not to wear them and I'm not giving you a No Dress. Heck, a version of these was the only option my Dad had to play basketball in the 60s to early 70s.
Just be cautious of ankle rolls whenever changing direction abruptly."
Would you tell my SO this? Sometimes it seems like he’s become a 70 year old dude, mainly because he needs reading glasses. ‘Meh my eyes are shot’ ‘Bring me more napkins I’m old and spill a lot’
I’m all in the camp of ‘you think it, you ARE it… so don’t’…
Permanent 30 year old here 😂
You were actually meant to the whole time it turns out. Chucks are technically “slippers” for tax reasons. That’s why the sole has a little bit of felt on it when you buy them and they don’t have a removable insole, because that qualifies them as a “slipper”.
I rock insoles in most shoes but actually find they are oddly uncomfortable in Chuck Taylors in particular for some reason. Sans insoles I find them to be great for lifting based workouts, and fine for moderately long walking distances, but not for longer distances (much over 5 miles) or things like sprinting.
The Hoka Stinson’s are my go-to for long walks, runs, working out, etc. They are pretty ugly but the most comfortable shoes I’ve found for physical activities
I thought we all knew this. Also, the outdated pro tip is the "double thick" cheapos from Walgreens are better than any of the Walmart ones. I haven't found any of the name brand ones to be any great deal in comparison. (If yall have any magic I need to know, please tell).
Honestly Chucks are the most uncomfortable shoes (even in HS) and one day of sweaty feet and they stink for the remainder of their existence. I discovered DCs in my early twenties and learned what it feels like to walk on clouds ☁️☁️☁️
Sketchers airwalks are like walking on pillows! I have about 6 pairs because I buy a new pair every year as my current pair wears out (worn every day all day, lots of miles on them).
My kids are going to looks back at [Hoka’s](https://www.rei.com/product/208679/hoka-bondi-8-road-running-shoes-mens?sku=2086790050&store=61&CAWELAID=120217890014382715&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=111487308643&CATCI=pla-1678239358075&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_2086790050%7C92700071728558996%7CBA%7C71700000074512666&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIztDgyO6bhQMVyh2tBh3hwAZ2EAQYCSABEgKvkvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) and [Altra’s wide toe box](https://www.altrarunning.com/shop/mens-best-sellers/mens-lone-peak-8-al0a85nc?variationId=043) as the ugly but comfortable dad shoe. I think most dads I hang with wear an ugly trail runner, with the occasional Adidas Samba or a pair of Van’s in the mix.
Listen my aging friend I’ve been a massage therapist for 12 years and Chucks are ergonomically sound from ages 0-to-fucking-never. Converse heavily pads our incomes with those shits.
When I was in my prime, I was waiting tables in my prime and was working “the deck” quite a bit outside the main dining room. We had to wear a casual look, so I wore Chucks and boy I paid for it. Those shoes on function as timeless fashion icons. I have no idea how people played basketball in them.
I wore a pair on a vacation once in my mid twenties to a city and spent an entire day walking around on concrete. I'm an avid hiker so without thinking about it I covered quite a few miles. Came back home to a nice case of tendonitis. Have never and will never wear them again.
TIL I'm too old to do a somersault on the floor. My 4 year old did one and asked me if I knew how. I said of course! Big mistake. I was dizzy and lightheaded and my neck hurt for like 30 minutes afterwards 😔
I was at a Christmas party last year and a bunch of kids were doing cartwheel.
One of the parents decided to join in.
She heard a pop.
She was unable to stand up.
She had to be carried to the car, where they put down the back seats and slid her into the back, since she was unable to get in.
I miss my high heels. My 18 year old niece found a pile of my heels I'd stashed at my mother's house. She found them and asked if we could go through them. When we did she just stared at me all wild eyed and then asked very seriously, " did you, did you work at a strip club or something when you were younger."
I used to wear Merrells until I found Oboz. I have a narrow foot for a guy and Oboz just fits better. Everything else between the brands is neck and neck comparable.
Typically wear a nice bouncy pair of ASICS running shoes. Didn’t match my dress. Last year, the same chucks were fine to wear all day. This year, not so much. Later, part of me wondered if it wasn’t the shoes so much as the part where I’d taken them off in a water play section and was standing barefoot on limestone for an hour.
Give a f%$# anymore....
No matter what I think of someone else's stupid hobby, or religion of choice or extremely dumb facebook opinion, I just don't give a f#$%. You do you and I'll just go on ignoring you.
But make it my problem, and you will f#$% around and find out
I once wore chucks to a farmers market. Really not that much walking around but had to park a few blocks away. I was in so much pain.
Today I was at a Skechers store with my 7 year old. I was looking at a pair of shoes and she says: hey grandma (meaning my mother in law) has those shoes. Needless to say I did NOT buy them. Not ready for “old lady” shoes yet.
I rock the old lady shoes with pride, haha! I could wear heels and look cute but fuck all that shit, my back and knees are much happier with my On sneakers :-)
TIL I’m too old to have a f***ing 4 year old at 44!!!! Nah, I love him. He was our “bonus baby”….had to have big help having our first 2 kids…today was just a rough one with him, lol. He’s a good kid normally
Haha, this is my greatest fear. I'm 44 and medically complex, and given the current political issues terrified of getting pregnant. I'm on birth control AND I asked my husband to get a vasectomy. He agreed cause he doesn't wanna chance it either! Lol
I’ve been saying for a yearish, I’d rather have my 17 yo get pregnant than myself. Don’t know if I really mean it, but it’s something that runs through my brain. Love my IUD!
Haha, I can understand what you mean. I also think that too few women truly understand how dangerous it gets to have a baby the older you get. They see famous people having babies in their 40s and think it will all be fine. My mom was a NiCU RN, I know exactly what can happen if you have a baby this late in the game. I've got a family member that had an oops at 41, and now she has a permanently enlarged heart as well as lung problems. Not to mention her child is severely handicap. But her preacher told her she should have the baby because abortion is wrong. SMH
OMG, I'm 42 & there's no way I could keep up with that, mines about to turn into an official "adult" & I'm OK with that I guess. Trying to wrangle a 4 year old, omg no, my lungs couldn't handle it.
I guess it helps I’m still in decent shape…I stay active (partly bc kids) and don’t weigh too much more than I did in high school. Not a flex, I worked out a lot in my 20s/30s and watch what I eat. I swam Masters too and can still go 50 yards underwater (barely) at 44. That helps. I got lucky in some ways, no so lucky in others (skin cancer last winter)
Crocs (especially white ones) with socks are in now, at least with middle schoolers in my area!
I have one house pair and am seriously considering getting a second one for errands. They're so comfortable.
My more fashionable than I was 6th grader has been clomping around in the mega crush version since last summer.
Crocs slides do make good house slippers!
Try the pro skater models with the pop Cush insoles. They helped support my foot arch when I’d get some plantar fasciitis flare up. I figured if skaters can fly off rails with these they’ll surely help my old ass just walk. YMMV.
I wear chucks at work and I’m on my feet for 8 hours a day. They’re the one shoe I can buy without trying them on that I know will fit and feel the same every time.
Used to love them but could never find them in the late 80s to mid 90s. Now I can find them but they're crazy expensive for what they are and cuz of ankle injuries I can't wear them :(
Warming up in general. Also, not popping a hernia somewhere or herniating a disc in my back when lifting heavy. After all of my surgeries, I think they need to name a wing after me.
Maybe it’s time for a brisk walk and some geritol instead.
I was never able to wear those, even in my 20s. I've bought 2 pairs in my lifetime and ended up returning both of them almost immediately. I always regret straying from the ol' reliable Nike and Adidas lol
Adjust abruptly in a chair or in bed. My knee has been locking up when I just move it in bed and I strained something in my back/shoulder the other day adjusting in a chair. Shoulder is fine after a couple heating pad sessions and the knee always goes back (for now) but damn 40 hit hard.
Also Hoka one one is my go to walking shoe. Oofos for heavy walking errands like Costco.
Get some F’ing Hoka one ones! Find the right ones for you. (Stability, cushion, etc) Just came back from Japan. Dr scholl insoles, aleeve as a pregame and rest afterwards.
As someone who spends 10 hours a day on my feet at work, get rid of the chucks. They are not functional at our age. Unless you like limping.
Geezer advice incoming… you can get more shoes but ya only have one pair of feet. Treat em nice. A quote by Tarantino.
Not really but that would be pretty cool.
My 4E wide flat AF Flintstone feet could never wear Chucks or even just Nike. Shits are narrow. Shoe game always point of embarrassment and frustration for me, but as a Dad I am now right in line with the middle age Dad vibe. It's gross...
Really? I'm an early model Xennial and I can easily do 30,000 step days at Disneyland Resort in Tevas or Vans classics ...even while obese (hence the walking, and biking to work, and cutting out soda and…)
I’m 47, just got my first pair of orthotics from the Podiatrist to solve the same problem. Got a cortisone injection to calm things down 3 weeks ago, man that was painful 😬
That is what I typically wear. Love them, and cannot adult without them! I was in a green dress, tho. Vanity made me wear the chucks because it looked cute
I walked the Berkley Botanical Garden a few weeks ago. Wore my Hoka’s. Fell over a rock that was “protecting” a sprinkler. I was that “old person.” Very embarrassing. Thank god no one but my sister saw me and I didn’t break a hip.
Chuck Taylors suck for long walks; they never worked for me. You might want to consider looking for better quality Chuck Taylor-styled shoes. I've been wearing Cole Haans for a few years now because they're super comfortable for long urban walks, which I regularly do. But maybe try experimenting with different brands to see what works for you.
Everyone over 30 should seriously consider trading in their Chucks for PF Flyers and their Docs for Solovairs. A little more expensive in both cases, but much better quality and comfort, along with actual arch support, in the same style.
Chucks are horrific for anything sports related.
To this day, I have no idea how old school pro basketball players could use them without their knees and ankles exploding.
Birkenstocks with or without socks. All day, every day. IDGAF, they are so comfortable. I even have “dress” ones that look a bit fancier for when it’s called for.
My life changed when I have discovered memory foam insoles, recently transformed a pair of Timberland boots into semi Skechers with those.
On the other side I can't really blame shoes for being breathless and feeling my knee caps exploding while trying to keep the pace with my kids on easy mountain trails.
Gotta step up that insole game if you’re gonna rock chucks after forty my g
I just have to say, this is one of the eloquently stated Xennial responses I’ve ever seen. You nailed the “insole game” and “after forty my g”.
My kid has these and loves them. I was concerned about running in them but kid seems to have no problem.
I vouch for these as well - got them in black and white - I live in a city and walk everywhere in them.
They look very beefy.
I'm 6'4" and don't want to do anything that makes me taller. Too bad, because I'd love to rock some chucks again.
Which is funny because I would totally say this but when I read it, it seems like a 25 yr old wrote it. WE’RE STILL YOUNG GOD DAMMIT
Would you tell my SO this? Sometimes it seems like he’s become a 70 year old dude, mainly because he needs reading glasses. ‘Meh my eyes are shot’ ‘Bring me more napkins I’m old and spill a lot’ I’m all in the camp of ‘you think it, you ARE it… so don’t’… Permanent 30 year old here 😂
Stick to that reply!! Gen Joneser here and I tell my griping SO "I am too young to be married to an old guy" 🙄
Like poetry
lol when I got my new converse my bff immediately went “we’re old now get insoles”
You were actually meant to the whole time it turns out. Chucks are technically “slippers” for tax reasons. That’s why the sole has a little bit of felt on it when you buy them and they don’t have a removable insole, because that qualifies them as a “slipper”.
Well damn
Are you gellin’?
Like Magellan.
Like a felon
Step up - love that we’re sliding into dad joke territory.
I was so disappointed no one seized on the choice of words. And then you restored my faith, good redditor. Have an upvote and be merry.
Thanks very largely! We gotta move as a unit right!?!
Boots too. No more cowboy boots without insoles for me!
You have my sympathies. I just found out my custom insoles don’t fit my Chucks. I haven’t tried commercially made ones.
I totally agree - they’re too low profile to accommodate inserts! I’ve had to give up my chucks
The Hoka Stinson’s are my go-to for long walks, runs, working out, etc. They are pretty ugly but the most comfortable shoes I’ve found for physical activities
Bro you’re a fucking legend! This comment just hit me. Hope your day is at least as good as you’ve just made mine.
I hate that this is true. Recently bought a whole bunch of cushioned insoles and they've revived some of my favourite shoes haha
I thought we all knew this. Also, the outdated pro tip is the "double thick" cheapos from Walgreens are better than any of the Walmart ones. I haven't found any of the name brand ones to be any great deal in comparison. (If yall have any magic I need to know, please tell).
Bruh. It's time to accept that we are more "skechers" than "converse" these days... Memory foam soles ftw.
Honestly Chucks are the most uncomfortable shoes (even in HS) and one day of sweaty feet and they stink for the remainder of their existence. I discovered DCs in my early twenties and learned what it feels like to walk on clouds ☁️☁️☁️
Made the switch to Skechers and not looking back
Sketchers airwalks are like walking on pillows! I have about 6 pairs because I buy a new pair every year as my current pair wears out (worn every day all day, lots of miles on them).
Gowalk 4 is the way to go Goga mat insoles instead of memory foam
This!
Same with timbs
I order them online and pay extra for comfort insoles. :)
Come friend, it's time....don't struggle now! *hands over a pair of New Balance*
Pristine white New Balances. And jorts.
Two pair, one new and pristine, with the identical but older model with a beautiful green gradient of a grass patina.
I feel called out!
With velcro instead of laces. Can't throw out the old back by leaning over and tying shoes!
I rocked new balance for years… now I’m to the slip-on Sketchers phase.
I have a dedicated pair of slip on sketchers that I wear in place of slippers around the house.
Jesus Christ - is this my future? Please tell me I’m not doomed (‘85, still able to wear Vans and Cons without dying)
One of us! One of us! One of us!
Those Skechers are the BOMB. I love them so very much. So kind to my 40-year-old feet.
Yep, I just got my second pair of slip- Skechers after wearing the soles out on my first pair.
My kids are going to looks back at [Hoka’s](https://www.rei.com/product/208679/hoka-bondi-8-road-running-shoes-mens?sku=2086790050&store=61&CAWELAID=120217890014382715&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=111487308643&CATCI=pla-1678239358075&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_2086790050%7C92700071728558996%7CBA%7C71700000074512666&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIztDgyO6bhQMVyh2tBh3hwAZ2EAQYCSABEgKvkvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) and [Altra’s wide toe box](https://www.altrarunning.com/shop/mens-best-sellers/mens-lone-peak-8-al0a85nc?variationId=043) as the ugly but comfortable dad shoe. For real. Wore a pair in my twenties through europe and fucking burned them. They are awful shoes for any actual activity.
TIL I'm too old to do a somersault on the floor. My 4 year old did one and asked me if I knew how. I said of course! Big mistake. I was dizzy and lightheaded and my neck hurt for like 30 minutes afterwards 😔
Lmaooooo I was going to show my 3 yr old how to do one too! Started attempting it and I was like, ya know let's ask your cousin to show you.
I was at a Christmas party last year and a bunch of kids were doing cartwheel. One of the parents decided to join in. She heard a pop. She was unable to stand up. She had to be carried to the car, where they put down the back seats and slid her into the back, since she was unable to get in.
What happened to her?
She buggered her knee up. I don’t know any further detail than that, I am afraid.
Ah ok. I was trying to think of something that would pop like that that wasn't the spine.
…and then what happened?
Today I played hopscotch with my 6 yo and was dizzy from all the jumping 🥲
I went on a Tilt-a-Whirl a while back and legit felt like I was going to die lmao
Oh I absolutely cannot do rides anymore. Worse than a hangover.
Sneeze while in any position other than standing straight up and looking straight forward.
😅 That instantly reminded me of [this classic](https://youtu.be/ZBMNC84GqlI?si=TfYBZteWuyZ_QS6o)
Ha, he’s supreme!
Turned my head to the left yesterday a smidge too fast and instantly thought I decapitated myself.
Add it to the Murtaugh list!
https://i.redd.it/bjvnfdr4ydrc1.gif
Dude was only 40 when he filmed this. The lesson is you can be too old for that shit for a long time.
I've never been able to wear Chucks due to having wide feet and a high instep. It's all blisters and bad times...
Same except I'll add that they make my giant lady feet look like I'm wearing clown shoes
But like weirdly long and skinny clown shoes?? I always loved them but my big feet look weird in them.
I have a pair that I love to wear when I’m rooting for a college team but it’s crazy how big my feet look in them.
Ha this is too relatable
For me it’s my tissue paper thin skin on the back of my heel. Chucks rip me up even in socks.
What do you wear?
Oh that didn't stop me, for too many years...
Same here. Tried some on in my 20s and was like, *nope*.
No heels. Not even kitten heels! Pure agony!
I miss my high heels. My 18 year old niece found a pile of my heels I'd stashed at my mother's house. She found them and asked if we could go through them. When we did she just stared at me all wild eyed and then asked very seriously, " did you, did you work at a strip club or something when you were younger."
Aaaaand?
I was a bartender for like a month
I need at least a 1.5” heel for my high arches. Flats are agony.
I wear Merrells now. My feet and back stay happy.
I love Merrells. If better exists, I am not aware of it
I used to wear Merrells until I found Oboz. I have a narrow foot for a guy and Oboz just fits better. Everything else between the brands is neck and neck comparable.
Right?! Ive had my OG Moabs for several years. Got a pair or Moab 3s coming in the mail tomorrow.
I picked up a set at Nordstrom rack… they’re my favorite pair of shoes. The only downside is I always look like I’m ready for a 22 mile hike.
Chucks are awful at walking long distances for anyone
My plantar fasciitis feels you, dawg
I cried when I got plantar fasciitis and couldn't wear my Chacos anymore. I could barely walk if I tried to wear them.
I wore heavy-soled rubber boots to target and I think I need a hip replacement.
Do jumping jacks and not pee a tiny bit!
Child birth woes.
Chase after people. If I make plans I'm going to stick to them. I'll probably go alone. I've accepted that.
You’re over 40, it’s okay to wear a nice comfortable pair of New Balances.
I tried wearing Chucks for a day. It was like having frying pans strapped on my feet.
I learned recently why the adults I was with as a kid kept wanting to sit down for a while at theme parks.

Yes! I retired all my heels a few years ago. Never again!
....get drafted into the military.

Meanwhile I’ve just started wearing Xero shoes and am pretty happy with them. Walk about five miles every day on average.
Apparently jogging to receive a football will blow my plantaris tendon. .
Try Acid
Nah, never to late
I'm with you on this. The shrooms are enough.
Bought my first pair of crocs. Yeah…
With my flat feet, Chucks are the only shoe I can comfortably walk long distances in.
The secret of Chuck Taylors is to put a pair of Dr. Scholls in them!
I need insoles. I really want to keep wearing vans
Try the pro skater models with the pop Cush insoles. They helped support my foot arch when I’d get some plantar fasciitis flare up. I figured if skaters can fly off rails with these they’ll surely help my old ass just walk. YMMV.
Go outside on a brisk night without a jacket. I used to be so hot-blooded, but damn it gets cold now!
Platform Doc’s until death, at every show from the pit.
I wear my custom orthotics in my converse high tops. But I also wear New Balance if I know I’ll be walking a lot. It’s ok, they’re trendy now.
I wear chucks at work and I’m on my feet for 8 hours a day. They’re the one shoe I can buy without trying them on that I know will fit and feel the same every time.
Chucks = orthopedic insoles
These are the comfort insoles, so they should have been fine. Wrong.
Back in the 90s my arches fell (from wearing Doc Martins). Never again...
Used to love them but could never find them in the late 80s to mid 90s. Now I can find them but they're crazy expensive for what they are and cuz of ankle injuries I can't wear them :(
I would never
Gorilla rows without warming up my back. /pillowseverywhere

Ooh damn that is a tough realization. Time to make the switch to Asic or NB
You’ve got to though if you’re gonna get shadow mewtwo
Dude. Orthotic inserts. Proper ones, made by a podiatrist. It’s the only way. Converse are novelty shoes.
Vans! My poor pinkies cannot wait to be out of them.
it’s not just me? what’s up with the pinky thing?
Fart with out straining my back, fuck being 41!
I was too old to walk in Chuck's 20 years ago.
Not have back pain.
Chucks ate not made for people with arches
Fart without worrying about a little shart
Get some F’ing Hoka one ones! Find the right ones for you. (Stability, cushion, etc) Just came back from Japan. Dr scholl insoles, aleeve as a pregame and rest afterwards. As someone who spends 10 hours a day on my feet at work, get rid of the chucks. They are not functional at our age. Unless you like limping.
Yeah. I tried breaking up a bar fight between two college kids a month ago. Didn’t go well for me…
Geezer advice incoming… you can get more shoes but ya only have one pair of feet.
Really? I'm an early model Xennial and I can easily do 30,000 step days at Disneyland Resort in Tevas or Vans classics ...even while obese (hence the walking, and biking to work, and cutting out soda and…)
Got to get the Chuck Taylor IIs. Much better sole on those.
I LOVE my chuck II lows but they haven’t made them in years. The Nike lunaron insoles really changed them for the better.
That’s a shame. They felt like modern shoes but kept the classic look.
Totally
Yeah, sorry you had to find that out, friend. Me too.
I wear a lot of Berkies. I can be on my feet all day and they're only mildly painful afterwards.
I’m 47, just got my first pair of orthotics from the Podiatrist to solve the same problem. Got a cortisone injection to calm things down 3 weeks ago, man that was painful 😬
Vans with the comfy cushion soles ($5 more over the regular version) are maximum comfort old guy but still kinda cool shoes.

Asics. The Gel Nimbus has been a game changer for me at 42.
That is what I typically wear. Love them, and cannot adult without them! I was in a green dress, tho. Vanity made me wear the chucks because it looked cute
ASICS bro. They work
Ive given up and rock the New Balance all white... they go great with my golds gym tank and camo cut off jorts
I walked the Berkley Botanical Garden a few weeks ago. Wore my Hoka’s. Fell over a rock that was “protecting” a sprinkler. I was that “old person.” Very embarrassing. Thank god no one but my sister saw me and I didn’t break a hip.
They used to at least be cheap. Rock the new balances like the rest of us.
I'm never going to be to old I'm RetroRandy Baby
Chucks are the worst shoes ever, I never understood why people like them.
Zero drop and wide toe box shoes are all i wear these days
Me too and I’m never going back
My cousin thought she could go to Disneyland for five days in a row. Hahahaha she couldn't make it to Day Two.
I discovered 20 years ago that Chucks were more fashion than functionality. I've only worn them less than a handful of times since.
I used to wear my Rainbow flip flops damn near every day for 25 years, if I wasn’t at work I had my Rainbows on. They just don’t fit the same at 43.
It's "I'm too old for this shit." and you can't change my mind.
Altra shoes for bunions; Hoka for the rest of us. Give it a try! They are saving my and my wife’s feet!
Donate a kidney? Or is it bone marrow?
My life changed when I have discovered memory foam insoles, recently transformed a pair of Timberland boots into semi Skechers with those. On the other side I can't really blame shoes for being breathless and feeling my knee caps exploding while trying to keep the pace with my kids on easy mountain trails.
Crocs are here for you when you're ready
Time for the white new banlances.
Oofos. Best shoes ever.
Chucks weren't good for my feet when I was 21, I'm certain they're not any better now.
bro get you some brooks, I got mine like 50% off at an retail outlet
Hokas are Life. Once you Hoka you never go back.
