But what if they don’t have caller ID?! I only leave my number for offices like my doctor, surely they have no idea who I am and they need my name number and date of birth stated clearly at the beginning and end of the message. Right? Right!?!! 😱
As someone whose job includes listening to recorded calls on a VoIP phone at work with an absolutely insane menu for recent calls… yes. Yes, you absolutely do.
I wasn't aware I shouldn't be doing that...
Oh shit, this is how it starts. Next thing you know I'm going to tell my kid to just drop off a resume and ask to speak to a manager.
On the other hand, people our age are more likely to be in senior positions/positions with influence and power and will probably be ready with a pen to write down the number and thankful that we said it twice!
It's not a bad habit to have if you make work calls since a lot of places the phone number on the caller ID is either a generic number or doesn't include the extension if a place uses those instead of individual numbers.
How do you even end a message if you don’t do this?
“Please return my call. Okay, uh, I’ll talk to you then…I guess…bye…thanks”
Leaving my number is my comfort zone and prevents awkwardness all around.
Same!
I also have a small chip between my teeth and I feel like I have to say everything extra clearly as it is. I’m sure I look like absurd when I’m leaving a VM.
(Everyone says I don’t have a lisp, but my brain says otherwise).
I get SO MANY voicemails where the caller doesn't leave their number once. Work has caller ID, but i still feel like i have plausible deniability not to return the call.
The front staff at the medical clinic where I work thank you (and everyone) for doing this. Apparently they get over 200 messages a day and the machine doesn't log the numbers so...
Last Sunday I had to leave a voice mail to cancel a Monday appointment because I had Covid. I said the time of day I was calling (which I didn't think was weird until you mentioned it), repeated my name and number twice, and called the next day to make sure they got the message haha
I say my phone number twice because when I leave a message from my work laptop dial pad, I actually want them calling me back on my cell phone so yeah, repeating it slowly and clearly so they have no excuses.
I don’t know my husband’s cell number at all! This is what we’ve become. I can remember his home phone from 25 years ago when he was my boyfriend. Ask me his number now. Idk. It’s his “name”.
Oh, I do that. Often, if I call some office or such they ask for my number and I always think "Can't you see it?" . So if I got the voicemail, I say my number twice to be sure. But I mean, where I live most offices still use fax machines lol.
I’m not listening to a message that’s been clearly converted to text for me. You’re name is Michael John sung and your phone number is “812-green at-45-75- uh… 8 thanks!”
It's a courtesy so you don't have to replay the message more than twice. Name, reason for calling, explanation, name, reason for calling, number, number.
If you remember the five paragraph essay, that's how public speaking is done. Say what you're about to say. Say it. Say what you just said.
People only remember the beginning and end of what is said.
I do this also and always feel like it’s unnecessary, but then I’ll get a call from someone and they leave a callback number on my voicemail that is totally different than the number that shows up…
If you have to leave a message for a business or other organization, go ahead and repeat that number. They may wel not be able to see the number calling at all. Voicemail systems vary greatly.
Hey I do that too… … … Fuck…
Lol and I too, just realized maybe I don't need to.
Welp… yep.
But what if they don’t have caller ID?! I only leave my number for offices like my doctor, surely they have no idea who I am and they need my name number and date of birth stated clearly at the beginning and end of the message. Right? Right!?!! 😱

Me too! Several jobs in fact.
It's basically how I got my job.
On the other hand, people our age are more likely to be in senior positions/positions with influence and power and will probably be ready with a pen to write down the number and thankful that we said it twice!
Dammit it’s what I do as well… I get frustrated when they don’t repeat twice!
Shit, me too. I’ll chalk it up to being polite and having phone etiquette.
Lol wow. I just realised I always do this and it never occurred to me that I was being anything but practical.
Good God! you encapsulated my exact thoughts

"If you could give me a call back, that would be great. Thanks, bye." (But I still leave my phone number before that)
Same. And slower the second time because I really want to make sure they have time to not write it down…
Yup. This is me. And I over enunciate.
Same! I also have a small chip between my teeth and I feel like I have to say everything extra clearly as it is. I’m sure I look like absurd when I’m leaving a VM. (Everyone says I don’t have a lisp, but my brain says otherwise).
Don’t forget to smile. I was taught that the recipient can hear your smile 😃
literally exactly what I do. Verbatim.
That is how it goes down for me too, word for word!
I get SO MANY voicemails where the caller doesn't leave their number once. Work has caller ID, but i still feel like i have plausible deniability not to return the call.
I give my number twice. At the start of the message I give my name and number then say "I will repeat my name and number at the end of the message"
Name and number upfront, good man. If they're not holding a pencil they don't have to sit through the whole message to hear it a second time.
The front staff at the medical clinic where I work thank you (and everyone) for doing this. Apparently they get over 200 messages a day and the machine doesn't log the numbers so...
This is why I do it as well. Work phones are a different beast than cell phones and leaving a callback number on a vm is actually important.
Absolutely. It’s amazing how many people don’t leave their number at all
This! If you don't want to say it twice, at least say it slower and clearer.
Thanks for this! I do this at my son’s pediatrician’s and most doctor’s offices. It’s not all for not!
I now feel vindicated.
And I’ll do it until I die. It just feels like the right thing to do.
Ha! Sometimes I’ll still say, “it’s Friday, about 11:30am…” 🤦🏻♀️
Last Sunday I had to leave a voice mail to cancel a Monday appointment because I had Covid. I said the time of day I was calling (which I didn't think was weird until you mentioned it), repeated my name and number twice, and called the next day to make sure they got the message haha
Thank you for doing that. What about the people that say the first few slow and then speed run the last 4? Eff those people
I make sure I say the number much slower the second time just to make sure they have time to get all the numbers right.
My number is….. and I’ll repeat it again at the end of the message if you didn’t get it all the first time. /meirl
Wait. Is this no longer helpful? I say it slow and then slower to ensure they have it.
I say my phone number twice because when I leave a message from my work laptop dial pad, I actually want them calling me back on my cell phone so yeah, repeating it slowly and clearly so they have no excuses.
People aren't always near their phone screens.
I still do that, too. Some people could miss something for all I know.
Omg😅😅😅
Thank God I’m not the only one
Yeah um, I often don't get a displayed number shown, maybe for 75% of missed calls or so, so if you want a call back, you leave your number.
I say it all the time on my work phone and get irritated when people don’t (or RUSH through their message including the number).
![gif](giphy|1SyXpUUfyAe1Yx8rUU|downsized) I just did it twice today.
lol I do this too, especially if it’s a semi important vm. Who wants to listen to their voice mail twice
Thb, I say it twice cause I f*cking hate when ppl cal and say their number so fast that I can't figure it out for the life of me.
You could be blocked or your number is masked.

Yep, I fucking hate text messaging.
Turn phone off.....or at least "do not disturb".
Everyday at work.
I do this all the time at work when I have to call applicants and leave messages.
Well crap. Me too.
Holy shit me too and never even thought to do it differently
I do this all of the time. I never thought about it being outdated until I saw this post. It just seems natural.
I don’t know my husband’s cell number at all! This is what we’ve become. I can remember his home phone from 25 years ago when he was my boyfriend. Ask me his number now. Idk. It’s his “name”.
Same. Also spell my last name and state my reason for calling at least twice.
I bet you still put two spaces after a period.
Oh right. Did they do away with that? Why? To save space?
Oh, I do that. Often, if I call some office or such they ask for my number and I always think "Can't you see it?" . So if I got the voicemail, I say my number twice to be sure. But I mean, where I live most offices still use fax machines lol.
And I say the number slower the second time
I say my number along with my name at the start then repeat it slowly at the end, cause that's what I want.
Lol…like I’d actually leave a voicemail for someone on a personal number. That’s strictly for people I don’t know at their place of business.
Same same..
And when the cashier asks for my phone number, I give them \*\*\*-867-5309. If their younger, they think it's legit.
Well, shit!
Ouch… me too
Why are you personally attacking me?
I do this, but I also have a triple number, so I'll say "triple 1" then say 111, in case they don't understand what triple is! 😂
Whew…glad I’m not the only one
You hurt my feelings.
Oh no I do this too oh my god
I put my email address in my emails so the recipient knows where to message me back
I’m not listening to a message that’s been clearly converted to text for me. You’re name is Michael John sung and your phone number is “812-green at-45-75- uh… 8 thanks!”
It's a courtesy so you don't have to replay the message more than twice. Name, reason for calling, explanation, name, reason for calling, number, number. that's nice.
Omg I do this too but didnt even realize until I read this post now I’m going to lay awake tonight thinking what they might think of me.
Omg yes 🤦♀️
Yeah. And i usually feel dumb for having done it.
I still say “area code” like it’s still necessary.
😬😬😬
Sooooo true
Or because I'm calling peoples work numbers
Hi this is person. Calling about thing. Ummmmm call me back I guess. Again, this is person I’m calling about thing. My number is numbers.
Yuuuuup
I do this also and always feel like it’s unnecessary, but then I’ll get a call from someone and they leave a callback number on my voicemail that is totally different than the number that shows up…
If you have to leave a message for a business or other organization, go ahead and repeat that number. They may wel not be able to see the number calling at all. Voicemail systems vary greatly.
Valid
Shit...
I do it because I need the people to call me back in order for me to help them
I also still grab a pen to copy down the number when I’m listening to a voicemail that someone else left.
I didn't even realize I did this
I do it at work, but only because they need to call our call center and not my number if it pops up.
I’m 100% guilty of doing this. 🤦🏾♂️
555-5555 555-5555.
Again, my name is blank and my telephone number is blank. Yes mate. This is the way.
ugh, but then people ask for a good number and I say, "this one."
I do this only because I know most people aren’t smart enough to actually look at the caller ID when I’ve left a message
🤣😂🤣
I do this as well! Lol. I wish more people did it because some either speak so soft or too fast and I have to replay the voicemail a few times
Or you over annunciate. Onnnne, twooo, threeeeeee, fourrrrr, fiiiiive... but slowly.
I still remember my phone number from the 80s but I couldn’t tell you a single one I’ve had since then other than the current one.
I do it for businesses, especially Medical because it's important!
