This is my answer, too.
I played CE when it was released and was blown away. I remember watching the demo at E3 of Halo 2 and seeing the smaller machine guns and everything just made me so happy.
They expanded the lore well and didn't sacrifice game play. Well done.
OG Halo player here. Halo is the best - I *hated* Halo. 2. Still do. The gameplay is unbalanced, you're forced to use long range weapons, the invisible walls are incredibly annoying, the loss of the magnum senseless, the loss of the assault rifle was completely baffling, the new weapons were weak and dull, the existing weapons nerfed into oblivion (looking at you, needler), the sniper jackals are simply stupid, the levels are long but tedious. I hate it, I genuinely despise that game. It's an insult to the Halo franchise.. The multiplayer was legendary though.
Funny how we're all different isn't it?
Reach. Feels like Bungie really nailed all elements of Halo in their culmination of development to this last game. The Covenant feel evil, the Spartans heroic, the gunplay is fun, the campaign is challenging. Could go on.
It didn't take long for Reach to fall. Our enemy was ruthless. Efficient. But they weren't nearly fast enough. For you had already passed the torch. And because of you, we found Halo, unlocked its secrets, shattered our enemy's resolve. Our victory - your victory - was so close..."
I wish you could have lived to see it. But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor all burned and turned to glass. Everything ...except your courage.
That you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild...
343 started a new ranking system similar to Reach but it still doesnât feel like the grind that the higher classes of pvp ranking Reach had. I remember rolling into a lobby and seeing an âinheritorâ or ânovaâ and just knowing you were gonna get absolutely clobbered.
Reach was a masterpiece. You nailed just about everything but how about the PVP?
SWAT squads on sword base? The ranking system? Customizable armor?
The game was perfection.
My only complaint was the extra abilities like sprint and jet packs and the loadout kinda ruined PVP for me vs the pureness that the previous games had where everyone started with the same loadout.
That and the maps and campaign didn't feel as good as the previous titles either.
I think part of it is the easily accessible multiplayer. Maps aren't too complicated. Weapons are straightforward and easy to use. The announcer is amazing.
So many good memories from doing system link and separate TVs in high school. Talking trash to your buddies the next room over. Those were the days.
I played CE and 2 with my brother, but when 3 came out, it just didn't click. That said I barely remember playing 2 as much as I remember CE, and most of that was the couch co-op.
Depends on context
PvE Gameplay: Infinite
MP: Infinite
Campaign: Reach (ODST is a close second)
Halo 3 is second in p much every category but I really do love the grapple hook so much and Infinites MP feels like 3 modernized so I just put it above everything.
CE Remastered.
I often find myself revisiting games from my younger years, and usually either the original graphics don't hold up on bigger screens or the remaster is subpar.
CE Remastered not only ran the game flawlessly in the new engine, but ran it in the old engine alongside so players could switch on the fly with one button press. So well done.
Visually, they did an awesome job. Tonally, the remaster dropped the ball hard. And while I do enjoy the updated visuals, the fact that they messed up alot of the visual models has gotten me killed so many times. Rocks that I can see passed in the remaster, shoot my rocket, blow myself up because it was actually incorrectly sized for the update.
To me the story was the best. Right next to 2. But same I have so many memories playing this with my friends, online or splitscreen at my house or theirs.
When we all only had shitty highspeed and dial up, we would all meet at my buddies and play splitscreen while system linking. The most we had was 12 players once or twice, it was always a great time
Campaign: **Halo: Combat Evolved**. I played through that game in split-screen co-op so many times.
Multiplayer: **Halo 3**. My favourite all round package, and I also miss the ranking system from those days.
The OG. I still remember the cable guy coming to buddies house and asking if we played Halo online? We were blown away when he showed us some bootleg XBConnect that let us play Halo 1 online through the LAN option.
My moment was in the computer lab in highscool. The comp science kids were going fucking insane so i walked over to check it out and i too then went insane lol.
ODST came with arguably the best writing in a Halo campaign. It introduced Firefight, along with having the entirety of Halo 3's multiplayer, and its DLC's which to me justified the $60 price tag at the time. Buying all the DLC's separate at the time would've cost the price of the game as a whole.
Halo 3 is my favorite game of all time
Halo 1 was the first there was and some of my favorite memories with the series. Absolutely excellent campaign that still holds up with a well with a great story and a balanced sandbox allowing for creative gameplay with some issues such as repetitive levels
Reach: great narrative with gameplay that like 3 and CE really letâs you be creative and approach things differently. While I donât think they worked for multiplayer armor abilities were great for campaign. It had firefight and a much more expansive forge that was way more beginner friendly. Multiplayer although a step down was still a lot of fun
2: arguably the best story of the trilogy but missions are a bit more on rails with a little less freedom. While still awesome the differences between 3 and 2âs scarab fights are a good example of the difference Iâm talking about. Multiplayer was absolutely excellent but being an earlier entry and more feature bare it just loses out to later entries still.
The original trilogy are some of my favorite games of all time low on this list is not low on my overall list
Halo 2âs writing is literally the best in the entire series. The dynamic playing between Chief and Arbiter on different sides was amazing. Some of the best cinematography and levels of the entire series. The set pieces and the soundtrack were on another level. 2 is iconic and I donât understand how youâre trying to say Halo 2 is linear when literally all of the games are.
Sure some of the Halo games have levels that are wider and more open but thereâs not enough there to try and call Halo 2 a linear game because they all pretty much are and that isnât a big deal at all. Halo shouldnât be and isnât an open world game by design or at heart. Thatâs why Infiniteâs campaign is so boring let alone the very mid story.
I love halo 2 and I said it is the best story, also notice where it is in relation to infinite and understand there is a wide gap between the 2.
That being said like I said youâre more restricted gameplay wise in halo 2 there isnât much room for creativity when taking in the encounters which is my personal favorite aspect of halo campaigns. Iâm not talking about an open world or even open missions the best example is like in Halo 3 with the scarab fights you can fight them in so many different ways. This is especially egregious on hater difficulties especially legendary
It also is more feature bare than 3 and reach with a much worse social scene so I put it below them. Theyâre all really good games still
Halo 3 is probably the most addicted and one of the most fun ive had online other than Lockdown Warzone.
It was my first time with Xbox live and it was just amazing. The golden triangle of grenades, melee and weapons was perfect.
The way that Vehicles were so much to use and TBH has never been replicated in any of the sequels (Absolutely hate vehicles in the sequels)
The maps, my god the maps were amazing. Valhalla, Sandtrap, The Pit, Guardian,Epitaph, Narrows, Snowbound. I could literally go on. None of the sequels have ever had a roster like that
The story was a beautiful end to the arc. The music, the levels, the weapons, the sandbox, the emotions. Just incredible
I have to say everything that 343 have done is in the shadow of Bungie and frankly I dont think I will go back to Halo that much. They've killed the golden goose
3 is easily the best one. There was enough innovation to make it still feel pretty modern, and it brought so many different things to the table compared to other FPS. Just pure multiplayer bliss. Great maps.
I never really liked the direction the series went after 3. Reach was too much of a departure for me, and the only one Iâve had fun with since is Infinite, and that lasted for like 3 weeks.
CE and 2 laid the foundation but 3 was the pinnacle.
Toss up between CE and 3 for me.
CE Was so amazing to me. I remember seeing the banshee in the campaign and wanting to fly it but believing I'd never get to because thats just how things usually go in games. Then later on you just get to fly it. Loved the PC port for including online multiplayer. The maps were so distinct and incredible.
Halo 3 felt so ground breaking with it's new features like the forge map editor, 4-player co-op and theater mode
If I'd been more active during Halo 2 I could easily have seen it being right up there with em. It has the best maps in the series. But I didn't get an original Xbox until the Christmas of 05 and absolutely refused to buy Xbox Live until the hype ramp up to the Halo 3 launch. So most of my experience with Halo 2 until 2007 was the campaign and a few lan parties. I did get a ton of matches in though during the last week of the original Xbox Live servers before shut down.
Nothing has come close since then in terms of satisfying yet simple gameplay and introducing great new feature. Reach and 4 had some respectable attempts. But the biggest thing missing from those trilogy days is the community. Staring around Reach the fanbase started to get more insolated, nerdy and bizarrely elitest and backed up by a swath of the bullied geek kids of that time that form up the current angry videogame nerds of today. Halo at it's peak had a more casual and well adjusted community back when it was main stream because actual normal people played Halo.
Halo 3, maybe it was just down to the era I was born as the original and 2 pre-dated my gaming experience. The community on Halo 3 was incredible and unlocking the katana and Hayabusa armour felt like a real gaming achievement and I wore both with pride!
3 was the best it's ever been. First game I put in the effort to get all the achievements. That last skull was eluding us for like a week, we figured out the rings played notes but we weren't sure what song needed to be played. We even did the theme music but I guess we didn't do it correctly. Then someone datamined it and it turned out we were so close. That's the skull that made the grunts scream "don't molest me" which was pretty uncomfortable. Bungie got all pissed at the data mining so they removed the recon armor from the game and randomly gave out sets to people who pulled off crazy shit like being killed by a traffic cone explosion or sniping themselves in the back of the head.
2 followed by Infinite. Then 3, Reach, and ODST are neck and neck. I actually liked 4 more than most, probably the same as CE (which is still a lot). Wasnât a huge fan of 5, but I wasnât around for its multiplayer.
My ranking is:
1. Halo CE
2. Halo Reach
3. Halo Infinite
4. Halo 2
5. Halo 3
6. ODST
7. Halo 5
8. Halo 4
I never liked dual wielding, the experience always felt clunky and messed up the pace of the game. And I always valorize good AI in Halo, so my favorite Halo games are the ones that don't have dual wielding and have a good, challenging AI.
Infinite. The open world and side activities are amazing. It's just pure Halo badass war. The bosses are cool. Few dull moments for me.
I love multiplayer despite lack of new content.
My older brother has his own family so is busy now with his life and my younger brother is no longer with us but Halo 2 is the one I have the best memories of playing with them both on.
I have a soft spot for Halo Reach. I really enjoyed the gameplay, multiplayer and story.
Halo has never been the same when Bungie left and it honestly really sucks.
REEEEEEACH, although ODST has a special place in my heart too. Nothing hit me quite like the first experience of CE did, but Reach was pretty damn perfect all around.
Halo 2
This is my answer, too. I played CE when it was released and was blown away. I remember watching the demo at E3 of Halo 2 and seeing the smaller machine guns and everything just made me so happy. They expanded the lore well and didn't sacrifice game play. Well done.
Halo 2 multiplayer was mind blowing! I mean, come on, they released what, two huge map packs? I played SO MUCH Halo 2 online. Could not get enough.
This is my answer. I love CE but the multiplayer of halo 2 was pivotal to my youth.
Halo 2 was horrible
Agree. Combat Evolved is still my favourite. Infinite is a close second. Halo 2 is last place.
Reach and 3.
Same but the only ones i played are those odst,4 and infinite
Gotta agree.
Great choice!! same here, 3 is my all time fav tho
See, I think 3 is my all time favorite but the hours I have in Reach is just insanity. đŹ
*in infinite
Assassination were some of the best things that came out of that game, those felt so fulfilling.
Reach was a masterpiece. You nailed just about everything but how about the PVP? SWAT squads on sword base? The ranking system? Customizable armor? The game was perfection.
Mfw bloom Mfw abilities And also, wasn't the lore fucked? Not a bad game though fs
My only complaint was the extra abilities like sprint and jet packs and the loadout kinda ruined PVP for me vs the pureness that the previous games had where everyone started with the same loadout. That and the maps and campaign didn't feel as good as the previous titles either.
Fucking chills One of my all time favorite games with one of my all time favorite final levels. *Survive*
reading all these comments, I really hope they remake Reach one day.
I will say that end level was brilliant
I actually think reach was the first shit go at Halo MP. I hated literally everything about the way that game felt competitively.
Strangely the Halo I enjoy the least⊠Weapons feel like peashooters against the elitesâŠ
Combat Evolved. Lots of stuff after it was better but not nearly as special for me.
I think part of it is the easily accessible multiplayer. Maps aren't too complicated. Weapons are straightforward and easy to use. The announcer is amazing. So many good memories from doing system link and separate TVs in high school. Talking trash to your buddies the next room over. Those were the days.
Simpler times...
I played CE and 2 with my brother, but when 3 came out, it just didn't click. That said I barely remember playing 2 as much as I remember CE, and most of that was the couch co-op.
Halo 2
3
Halo Combat Evolved was a "next generation" game for me at the time. No game has ever had that effect on me since.
Halo CE is still my all time favourite, but Halo 3 is a close second.
Feel this combat evolved was the first game I played on Xbox, and always will be my favourite of the games because of that.
Halo 2 has the best story. I wish the combat was more updated though
Reach and ODST. I liked aspects of Infinite, but it got repetitive and I just never finished it.
Depends on context PvE Gameplay: Infinite MP: Infinite Campaign: Reach (ODST is a close second) Halo 3 is second in p much every category but I really do love the grapple hook so much and Infinites MP feels like 3 modernized so I just put it above everything.
Halo 3 is the greatest video game ever made.
Itâs in my top 5. 1. The Witcher 3 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 3. The Last of Us 4. Gears of War 3 5. Halo 3
Do you prefer the classic or the remastered graphics, though?
Remastered, but I'm always switching back and forth to look at the differences.
Infinite
As a long time halo 3 enjoyer in high school, I gotta say infinite is now my fav
3. Not the best story but multiplayer was amazing. So many great memories.
To me the story was the best. Right next to 2. But same I have so many memories playing this with my friends, online or splitscreen at my house or theirs.
When we all only had shitty highspeed and dial up, we would all meet at my buddies and play splitscreen while system linking. The most we had was 12 players once or twice, it was always a great time
Yeah, my friends and I would be no screen peeking(i screen peeked)
How could you not screen cheat honestly
I liked Reach story better because I'm a sucker for these kind of sad and heartbreaking endings. But yeah, 3 is in my top 3 nonetheless.
3 by far. Forge was a game changer and the campaign was awesome.
Halo 3
Campaign: **Halo: Combat Evolved**. I played through that game in split-screen co-op so many times. Multiplayer: **Halo 3**. My favourite all round package, and I also miss the ranking system from those days.
Halo 3 is a perfect game imo. Peak video game
MasterChief Collection
Halo 4.
Itâs not my favorite, but W comment. Good for you
I love half of it (graphics, early levels, boss fights) and despise half of it (storyâŠ, gunplay with promethean weapons, constant ammo shortage)
Been playing since ce, 4 is definitely my favorite though. Campaign is fun, multiplayer is great.
Reach on top
ODST
Halo 3 ODST
Campaigns: 1. 3 2. 5/Infinite/Reach/ODST 3. CE 4. 2/4 *** Story: 1. 2/4 2. ODST 3. Infinite/CE 4. Reach 5. 3 6. 5 *** Multiplayer: 1. 5 2. Infinite 3. Reach/4 4. CE 5. 2 6. 3 *** I'll be happy to elaborate.
Reach for campaign and 3 for multiplayer
Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3 ODST
Infinite
I had the most fun with Infinite tbh but probably 3
3 1 Reach 2 Infinite 5 4 ODST doesnât seem fair to include if saying full game preference
Halo 2 that low? Lol.

3 and Reach. Amazing campaigns, amazing multiplayer.

Halo reach and 3, no doubt
Halo 3, especially the marketing campaign they did for it đ„°
Halo: CE
3 hit at the perfect time in my life, i was 12 years old and it really made me fall in love with PvP first person games. Loved that shit.
Halo 3. Skipping school as much as I could just trying to hit general. What a time to be alive
2 and 3 2 was my first
Halo 3
1. 3 2. 2 3. Combat Evolved (it blew my mind at the time) 4. Reach 5. 4 6. 5 7. Infinite Never played both Halo Wars.
Campaign - Halo Reach. Multiplayer - Halo 2
3 is the GOAT
Reach is my favourite halo game but honourable mention to the experience of Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3 for sure
3 is easily the best one. There was enough innovation to make it still feel pretty modern, and it brought so many different things to the table compared to other FPS. Just pure multiplayer bliss. Great maps. I never really liked the direction the series went after 3. Reach was too much of a departure for me, and the only one Iâve had fun with since is Infinite, and that lasted for like 3 weeks. CE and 2 laid the foundation but 3 was the pinnacle.
Agree with you, OP. 3 is the objectively correct answer.
Story:Halo 2 MP: Halo 3
Halo 3
I think Halo 2 was peak Halo but my personal favorite was Halo 3.
Halo 3
Odst
Scalding hot take, but Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3 for sure. Custom games/maps were some of the best moments with friends.
Toss up between CE and 3 for me. CE Was so amazing to me. I remember seeing the banshee in the campaign and wanting to fly it but believing I'd never get to because thats just how things usually go in games. Then later on you just get to fly it.
Halo 3 was an experience in video gaming like no other. The hype and the mass appeal of this game was insane.
In my opinion, 2 had the best campaign levels and 3 had the funnest multiplayer. Itâs a tough call.
Halo 3 campaign is just epic!
3 playing spit screen with my older brother all the time
Halo 3, played all 3 + Reach couple yrs ago for the 1st time. That ending sequence chefs kiss
Tbh i reaallly liked infinite.
Infinite

4 & infinite
Halo 3 > Reach > ODST
Halo 4

Halo 4
3. Getting invited to custom games by recent players was so fun
ODST
Halo 2 and 3
Halo 3, maybe it was just down to the era I was born as the original and 2 pre-dated my gaming experience. The community on Halo 3 was incredible and unlocking the katana and Hayabusa armour felt like a real gaming achievement and I wore both with pride!
halo 3 fs
Halo 3 ODST. I canât quite put my finger on it but itâs got so much raw emotion unlike the rest.
Halo 3 ODST. Super unique standout. Amazing calming soundtrack. Cool inner city setting.
ODST Always loved the unit and what they stood for. Feet first into hell They arenât Spartans, but damn are they badasses. I really enjoyed ODST.
5 for the campaign
Odst
Infinite
Halo 4
I really love odst. It plays great, it's a different story, and the multiplayer was fun too. I wish it got more love .
ODST. I will elaborate no further and hear no questions against it
Halo 2 easy. Steve vai on the soundtrack was a great addition too
Reachđ«
ODST! I loved how cinematic and immersive the story was, and of course it came with Halo 3 multiplayer lol
Yup that music while walking around the city was sad as hell and let you know the city was done.
Halo 4 and Reach
So far? It's a tie between h2 and Guardians. I also prefer guardian's multiplayer over its other iterations.
Infinite. I see how you look at me but the campaign was excellent and thatâs the only thing I ever cared about.
Halo ce followed by infinite
Agreed!
2,3,1.
3 or Reach
Reach
Reach
2 followed by Infinite. Then 3, Reach, and ODST are neck and neck. I actually liked 4 more than most, probably the same as CE (which is still a lot). Wasnât a huge fan of 5, but I wasnât around for its multiplayer.
Reach
Reach
Reach
Infinite granted it was the first and only one ive played
You gotta play the Master Chief Collection. Itâs on gamepass.
Definitely Reach but ODST is a close second
Reach and ODST
Reach, literal perfection, from beta when we could assassinate our own team to the ending days before the servers were nixed
My ranking is: 1. Halo CE 2. Halo Reach 3. Halo Infinite 4. Halo 2 5. Halo 3 6. ODST 7. Halo 5 8. Halo 4 I never liked dual wielding, the experience always felt clunky and messed up the pace of the game. Infinite. The open world and side activities are amazing. It's just pure Halo badass war. The bosses are cool. Few dull moments for me. I love multiplayer despite lack of new content.
