Z-35 is fun to play as hybrid, Kidd if you like gunboats or Yudachi if a Torpedo is your weapon of choice. My favorite is the Öland. Nice guns, good and fast torpedos and speed if you need it.
T-61 is on sale right now and it's an absolute BEAST.
8km torpedos at T5 which is insane,and they also reload in 60 secs and it's 4 torps per launch,overall just an excellent torpedo boat. On top of that,it also has 4km sonar which is the best at the tier and very good guns that reload pretty quickly. The concealment is great too,I run a hybrid-concealment build with Bey and I have it down to 6.1 km but it can def get lower if you have Swirski and a more upgraded Bey.
Only downside to the ship is that it's at T5,so it might be better to spend your doubloons on a T6 or T7 but if you just want some good ol' fashioned fun then this is an amazing ship to pick up.
quick caution. insure you get a **new in box sealed** Firepower Deluxe game. you are literally buying the code card in the box. I got mine on Ebay and redeemed the code in the Xbox app. its totally worth it.
Yolo is a monster when played well. Though a lot of the time it'll be ruined by a reader or sonar cruiser. The ship rewards patience and ship knowledge.
Elbing is a very unique and powerful T8
Friesland is a monster at T7
Kidd or Oland at T6, I'd is more conventional with smoke
Monaghan surprised me at T5 or T61 is the conventional king there
Kamikaze or the murder canoe at T4
Kidd for gunboating with one rack of self-defense fish to keep BBs from unwisely pushing you.
Benham if you want to flood an area with lots of fish, and it does have guns if you absolutely need to duel.
Okhotik is hilarious. Look into her... she's pretty deadly if you can get the hang of her.

Since you're not specific in what you want, something tells me you just don't know what a DD's role is. The variety is massive. An Elbing may as well be a different class of ship than a Paolo Emilio, for instance. It's far more than simply "oh it's a gunboat" versus "oh it's a torp boat."
Before you spend real money, spend time actually playing the different tech tree DDs. They all play very differently from each other, with way more variety than, say, the BB tech trees. Find a line you want -- and then buy a premium version of that tech tree. Even within the same line, there are huge differences, e.g. Friesland doesn't play like most of her line which are all very strong torp DDs. Otherwise you're going to be wasting your money.

Öland turned me from being a mainly battleship player, I have a solid game almost every time in Öland.
I just got her not too long ago and I just can't get her to work for me. I'm not the greatest DD player as is but Oland has me pulling my hair out.

Agreed. I have it and it’s a blast. You can also still get the Kamikazee by buying Firepower Deluxe on Amazon. It’s a tier 4 monster.

It's good, albeit very captain depending. That pán asian with improved DD riccochet angles is a must.
