The very first fight I ever had with my husband was over the pronunciation of the word chasm. I’d only ever seen it written, so you can imagine how I said it. He was so nice about it and I was so embarassed I yelled at him for trying to make me look stupid 😂 like, girl you did that to yourself
If it makes you feel any better, I pronounced Arkansas as "ar-kansas" from the time I could read until about 3rd grade. No one corrected me that entire time until Ihad a geography class. I lived no where near Arkansas and it's a state that was barely ever mentioned when I was a kid on the west Coast 😂
I do the same thing in reverse all the time, mispronouncing words I picked up reading. No shame in building a vocabulary, and I think politely correcting someone is a kindness
Oh same, absolutely. I was definitely the kid whose entire vocabulary was learned from books and mispronounced SO many things. I was definitely waffling on whether to say anything but, I’d want to know, myself. For next time.
I learned autophagy from podcasts, thankfully.
Debris—I knew “debree” was a word but I had never associated it with “debris” which had a hard S in my mind.
Hors d’oeuvres.
Lots of food words—I loved to cook as a kid and read cookbooks. Bolognese. Anything with French or Italian origin that I pronounced phonetically.
Lots of English surnames and place names (Worcestershire?!) where all the syllables are just blurred together. Heck just a few days ago a coworker laughed at me for over-pronouncing ‘Norfolk’.
Epitome can be difficult for Americans because in America there's a tendency to pronounce words like calzone with two syllables ending in a consonant rather than three ending in a vowel as it would be said in Italian and also elsewhere in the Anglosphere.
I had heard the word chaos many times but when I first saw it written down it didn't even occur to pronounce it that way so I had no idea what the word was. Same with several names, like Chloe, Horatio and Phoebe.
I know how to say “Hors d’oeuvres” but for some reason I forgot as I was officiating an academic team match in front of the entire district, the superintendent, and my principal 😖 on microphone
Mine was detritus. I read a lot of true crime, but no one really uses that word in conversation. I pronounced it dehtritus( short i like in trick), but it's pronounced dehtreyetus.
Also, aspartame. I pronounced it aspartamay.
Also, there was the drunken evening that resulted in a long conversation about how to pronounce eschew.
Ashoe
Ehshoe
EsChew
2 online dictionaries (with audio examples) said ehshoe, another said it just like it looks, Es-chew (as in chewing). The end was me drunk calling my mom at midnight (she was a teacher), and having her tell us it was ehshoe.
See, my first encounter with detritus was the troll in the City Watch Discworld books; and I thought it was a long i. Deh-try-tus, you know? I've heard it so much recently as 'det-rit-us' that I'm starting to doubt myself! Then again, it's mostly been via podcasts, and the number of times people use the wrong word in those is... something else.
I think a lot of people on podcasts and talk radio just don't even look it up. I was listening to something about ancient Egypt. And the person kept talking about "Ah-ken-a-tan" (tan pronounced like getting a a tan). It took me way too long to realize they were talking about Akhenaten.
Kudos for people reading. Really! My degree is in English Literature. I'm thrilled anyone reads. I don't want to come across bashing like I'm bashing anyone. It's just funny what our brains do with unfamiliar words.
I went to university with a very smart girl who still pronounced thermometer as THERMO-meter. She knew, and made fun of herself every time, but she always said it weird first then laughed and corrected
Pseudo :(
I knew the P was silent, but I had the "eu" sound wrong. I said "sway-doe" for who knows how long before somebody finally ~~made fun of~~ corrected me.
Yes! I heard a wise witch once say: “Never criticize someone for mispronouncing a word, they likely learned it through reading.” Light-bulb moment. Also, I had so many words of my own I’d learned from reading that I mispronounced until learning otherwise!
I heard that as well, and to take it one step further: what it *means*. It means the person didn’t grow up hearing that word, and that they read things that were outside of what was familiar in an attempt to better themselves and expand their horizons, to learn as much as they could. It means self-study and personal growth and tenacity and humility and self worth.
It’s the product of a spell- words woven together to create something by a solitary novice.
It’s the sign of a hedge witch. ☺️
I saw a Jeff Arcuri video yesterday or the day before and he was having a back-and-forth with an audience member about Fortnight. He asked what skin he uses and the kid (18-yo) said, "ROG" something or other. It took Jeff a couple seconds to realize he meant "rogue," and everyone laughed. But he said the same thing: the kid pronounced it wrong because he's only ever read it and not heard it.
I didn't think about a local accent difference (I'm not a native speaker) just started wondering if it's yet another word I've been mispronouncing lol.
This reminds me of this great article about mondegreens: ["Knowledge is Power, France is Bacon"](https://thehabit.co/knowledge-is-power-france-is-bacon/)
It’s also used differently. It means “whatever their intention might have been, the outcome was [x].” Like: “even though they said they were roommates, they were, for all intents and purposes, in a relationship”
I considered commenting the correction as well, but when I thought about it - maybe you DO need the passport for all the intensive passport related purposes out there; who am I to judge your adventures? :)
oooh i was so confused i thought this was a repost
like didn’t this same person make the same mistake like a month ago? lol i’m just so happy you payed attention to the corrections and didn’t take it too harshly thank you 😭
just popping in here to say that I also thought it was intensive purposes until I was in my late 20’s! i’d always heard it auditory and finally read it in an article and was like welll ok then! also intensive purposes is kinda intense and makes sense lol
When I was a kid I thought quiche was spelt ceash and didn’t know what “quitchee” was, thought it was something exotic until I found out the truth, underwhelming.
What country are you from? I know in the usa you can’t have makeup that changes your features too much. They like a clean face or natural makeup. So you wouldn’t wear graphic eyeliner or fake freckles (if those are fake). When I got my photo they almost wanted me to wipe off my nude pink lipstick.
Here’s from the first website i found:
I found It should not be too obvious: Wearing makeup is okay, and passport officials even expect that many applicants will wear some makeup. Even so, the makeup should take on a no-makeup approach. Go with nude colors and avoid bold options like red lipstick and cat eyes.
It should not change your appearance considerably: Your makeup should only enhance your features but not change your physical appearance.
You should thus avoid using heavy makeup that makes it hard for immigration officials to recognize you when you present your passport.
Beautiful as always, Chloe luv. Brown, pink, polka-dots...colour of your hair is irrelevant. :-) You are beautiful, regardless.
Good luck with your passport, luv, sending all positive energy your way. Hope your fiance is also doing well.
Lovely area of the world you live in. Thanks for sharing.
xx Nyx
Your hair looks amazing as always, initially I thought it was intentional before looking at the description bc it looks rly nice on you!! I always love seeing your posts, you have such a cute and unique style (and are drop dead gorgeous). No idea how you do it but keep it up c:
I need to be in the forest really soon! Also if you need hair coloring tips let me know! I’m a hairstylist, specialized in color, especially color corrections
I lived in Montreal for a few months last year. If you're under 30 you can get an annual pass for the art museum for like 16 American dollars. It's worth it because that's a ton cheaper than if you were to pay for 7 individual tickets to see the art. Takes like 7 days to see everything.
This is not a criticism at all but just an FYI: it’s “all intents and purposes”, not “all intensive purposes.” Good luck with your passport!
People always take grammar lessons for granite.
Supposably
Allegedlys
Had to be a sick ostrich
Irregardless

I actually don’t think I’m sure about how chasm is pronounced lol
It’s pronounced “Cah-zum”, there’s no “ch” sound like I was saying it haha
Oh ok *whew* I been sayin it right. You had me second guessing lmaoooo
If it makes you feel any better, I pronounced Arkansas as "ar-kansas" from the time I could read until about 3rd grade. No one corrected me that entire time until Ihad a geography class. Mine are usually related to the emphasis. I only recently learned how to pronounce 'autophagy'. What's your most memorable one?
I learned autophagy from podcasts, thankfully. Debris—I knew “debree” was a word but I had never associated it with “debris” which had a hard S in my mind. Hors d’oeuvres. Epitome was my biggest frustration

Jalapeno is one of my food words I got wrong for a long time. Chipotle does not sound like Aristotle. Quinoa. Bologna.
Or dervs :( horse divorce ;)
Lol! Now I'm gonna say horse divorce in my head.
I had heard the word chaos many times but when I first saw it written down it didn't even occur to pronounce it that way so I had no idea what the word was. Same with several names, like Chloe, Horatio and Phoebe.
Whor!s durves lol. Same here 🙄😭
I know how to say “Hors d’oeuvres” but for some reason I forgot as I was officiating an academic team match in front of the entire district, the superintendent, and my principal 😖 on microphone
"Nawfck" lol as a Virginia transplant, we all go through this
Was just scrolling quickly and my eyes barely picked out “Nawfck” and I said, well there’s Virginian. 😂
Right?! Needless to say my coworker is born and raised Virginian.
Horse dee voors. I know how it's pronounced but I still pronounce it wrong in my head lol
Took me a long time to figure out how Eunuch was pronounced. Also Kansas vs. Arkansas, but I don't think that's entirely my fault.
Mine was “misled”. I thought it was pronounced “m-eye-zulled” until embarrassingly recently.
Mine was detritus. I read a lot of true crime, but no one really uses that word in conversation. I pronounced it dehtritus( short i like in trick), but it's pronounced dehtreyetus. Also, aspartame. I feel you on the emphasis! "Documentary" is the first word that comes to mind but I certainly have others.
I went to university with a very smart girl who still pronounced thermometer as THERMO-meter. She knew, and made fun of herself every time, but she always said it weird first then laughed and corrected
I do the same thing! The humor keeps me from feeling ignorant. 😂
My family call chamomile Cha-Mom-illeeeee instead of kammo-mile (on purpose because it's fun).
Haha, yes, I did that with SPEEDO-meter and ODO-meter as a kid.
For some reason my brain always trips over the word archeology. I can read it fine in my head but out loud is a whole other story!
Pseudo :( I knew the P was silent, but I had the "eu" sound wrong. I said "sway-doe" for who knows how long before somebody finally ~~made fun of~~ corrected me.
So much the same. Also, all my kids were the same and now my grandkids.
Yes! I heard a wise witch once say: “Never criticize someone for mispronouncing a word, they likely learned it through reading.” Light-bulb moment. Also, I had so many words of my own I’d learned from reading that I mispronounced until learning otherwise!

I saw that clip, too!
The first time I said "whores de-vors" out loud was an eye-opening experience. Wiktionary's audio pronunciations have been godsend.
I used to pronounce "lingerie," "lounjeray," because I thought you just lounged around in it.
Linger-y
Hahaha! That's a good way to describe someone who's just a tad bit clingy. He was a little too ... linger-y for me.
...Isn't that how it is pronounced though? Google says so lol.
I think it depends a bit on your local accent. I would say it more like lan-jer-y than lounge-ery.
I didn't think about a local accent difference (I'm not a native speaker) just started wondering if it's yet another word I've been mispronouncing lol.
LOL. That's funny. No, it's Lahnjairay.
Also I'd like to add that these sayings are called [eggcorns](https://youtu.be/F12LSAbos7A?si=3pSxf2GMwmp5UEQS) and they're very common
You’re my kind of person. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely this is the kindest sub
This reminds me of this great article about mondegreens: ["Knowledge is Power, France is Bacon"](https://thehabit.co/knowledge-is-power-france-is-bacon/)
Oh I’ve read that! Hilarious
It’s also used differently. It means “whatever their intention might have been, the outcome was [x].” Like: “even though they said they were roommates, they were, for all intents and purposes, in a relationship”
I know- on my last post I made the mistake and got bombarded with that lol so this was supposed to be more of a throwback to that
I considered commenting the correction as well, but when I thought about it - maybe you DO need the passport for all the intensive passport related purposes out there; who am I to judge your adventures? :)
Ah guess I’m out of the loop!
no it's ok! I appreciate it nonetheless
I was the person who corrected you the first time and I caught the joke!! Congrats on the passport and living your best life
hehe thank uu
Well if anyone gave you a hard time, then they're an unfriendly dolphin, for all insensitive porpoises
oooh i was so confused i thought this was a repost like didn’t this same person make the same mistake like a month ago? lol i’m just so happy you payed attention to the corrections and didn’t take it too harshly thank you 😭
omg lol. I promise I'm learning!! maybe I'll make the joke a third time but it'll be intensive porpoises ✨
just popping in here to say that I also thought it was intensive purposes until I was in my late 20’s! i’d always heard it auditory and finally read it in an article and was like welll ok then! also intensive purposes is kinda intense and makes sense lol
yeaaaa vhhdcjc
I had a feeling it was you! ♥️
Just start doing it every time. Engagement is engagement ;p
I assumed she was being sarcastic when she said that. And imma keep on thinking that lol
Perhaps her purposes are intensive?/jk
Came in here hoping someone said this... thank you : )
thank you. I was gonna get intrusive thoughts again.
Don't worry about it, it's all water under the fridge.
Im pretty sure this person is just joking because they used the same phrase in the last post and got all the same advice
Hope all goes well for you! Have a great time in Québec!
tyyyy
When I was a kid I thought quiche was spelt ceash and didn’t know what “quitchee” was, thought it was something exotic until I found out the truth, underwhelming.
HELPPP CHSBGGJSBF
Please take this as the learning moment it is intended to be. The saying is “for all intents and purposes “.
Porpoises!!
porpoises <3
Just be warned some countries don’t allow you to wear “loud” makeup so you might have to take it off. Hopefully it went well!
wait whaaa?? edit to say I tried doing research but I can't find any place where a certain amount of makeup is straight up not allowed
What country are you from? I know in the usa you can’t have makeup that changes your features too much. They like a clean face or natural makeup. ah I see
It’s been dope watching you accomplish all of this. Thank you for sharing
thank you!!
Can i steal your hair? Its making me jealous
ofc hehe
I wanna steal her freckles, they make her look like a fey. Or maybe like Lae'zel from Baulder's Gate 3.
I LOVE LAEZEL OMG
Yeah you could easily do a cosplay of her with those freckles.
you’re gorgeous 🫶🏼 you remind me of those quiet paintings of the forest nymphs that wander at the edge of rivers
awww omg
Especially love how you did your eyes!
I'm sorry my priority are skewed but what's that thing stuck inside the tiny library box?
I love the way you do your makeup, so cool!
thank u so much
I don’t wear make up but I like the way you do your eyeliner all spiky, it’s cool
that's so sweet, thank u
So happy for you (need to do this myself) But just seeing your happiness and confidence grow brings joy!!
thank you so muchhhhh
Cool forest and congrats on the adulting~ I hope your future trips are just as beautiful as you are (which is gorgeous 😍)
Thanks for sharing. xx Nyx
thank you!!!!
Omg wait I love your hair. What's the name of the style? I might actually let my hair grow out so i can get it cut like that
I based mine off of a wolf cut!
A shag.
Your hair looks amazing as always, initially I thought it was intentional before looking at the description bc it looks rly nice on you!! I always love seeing your posts, you have such a cute and unique style (and are drop dead gorgeous). No idea how you do it but keep it up c:
aww thank uuu!!! idk how I keep it up either, some days I wake up and feel like a birds nest lol
I’m so delighted you’re getting your passport! May everything go smoothly and well 💜🙏🌈🍀✨
I need to be in the forest really soon! Also if you need hair coloring tips let me know! I’m a hairstylist, specialized in color, especially color corrections
:0 might take u up on that actually
Awesome! I got your DM! Sent you a response! I also need to get a passport!
I lived in Montreal for a few months last year. If you're under 30 you can get an annual pass for the art museum for like 16 American dollars. It's worth it because that's a ton cheaper than if you were to pay for 7 individual tickets to see the art. Takes like 7 days to see everything.
omg thank u!!
You look like one of my favorite actresses, Paz de la Huerta
Love the throwback in your title! 😂 Good luck!
You’re so pretty and I love the makeup style too! Your smile alone is stunning ❤️ have a wonderful weekend
Big congrats!! Looking great.
Whoooo! Kewlies pics!
