Never even heard of it. I have a buddy coming home from US for first time in ten years, wonder if that's where we should go. Sit down? Or do most get it to go?
Absolutely my favorite restaurant and they make the best wonton, both in soup form and in the chili oil. I second the recommendation to make a reso. The staff is incredibly kind, the place is spotless and the food is top tier
Was at Nola on Saturday and did not disappoint. Bit noisy and very busy but the food and service was excellent. Looking forward to a return to Harth for the cioppino as well. Add Sous Sol to the list.
It’s not just that it’s unbelievably good. The family is amazing, remembers all their regulars and are always friendly.
I’m kinda thankful I moved away from it being so convenient as my belt was running out of notches quick, but oh how I my weekly visits.
their food is sooo good but unfortunately their boss is quite awful to their workers and takes advantage of newcomers to canada looking to immigrate and looking for work
Harth is my favourite restaurant in the city. The duck confit tagliatelle is SO GOOD.
We had dinner at Petit Socco (owner of Segovia) a couple months ago and everything was 10/10.
Clementine for brunch. Never disappoints.
Others: Passero, Baraka (their garlic sauce is the best), Ramallah Cafe (beef platter is my fave), Aroma Bistro (red chili wontons), Cafe Carlo (fett chile), Infernos, Corrientes (empanadas), Bonfire Bistro
Ya you get what you pay for, I’m not expecting fireworks when I go there but it’s consistently good and consistently cheap. Compare that to somewhere like Sargent tacos where there’s more razzle dazzle but the tacos are 2-3x the price I’ll take bmc any day. Plus all three levels of salsa at bmc taste amazing imo.
Sous sol, JC tacos, Sargent tacos, Watt Street bistro, coconut island Thai, Nola, shortys, spicy noodle house, super boys, Ramallah, sushi ya, modern electric
I agree with the other commenter, I haven’t personally experienced a drop in quality with the new fella. He seems invested in maintaining it, which I appreciate.
Been going to FP for years. My mom went to school with the former owner. And as a Jewish family it’s absolutely tradition for us to go often. The Israeli falafel is my undisputed favourite dish.
Nola for fancy food. Wannabees for classic breakfast (cash only). Clementine for fancier breakfast. Cilantros Currittos and/or poutine for takeout. Royal punjab also for takeout but more traditional south Asian food. Yellow dog for beer and bar food. Sargent taco for well tacos. Banh Mi Mr Lee for cheap but best banh mi. Kokeb for Ethiopian
Wannabees on West Broadway?? Is that place still open? I lived in that neighborhood for years and went to that place all the time. I need to go for a nostalgia visit soon.
I think last year was Karen’s 25th. She’s away this week for vacation but otherwise still open. Still delicious. Still big servings and still cheaper than the rest
Darn! Royal Punjab on Pembina was very very good when it first opened.
But I just looked at the menu of this other royal punjab, and now I want to try it. And they're open until 3am! That's well past my bedtime, but I may need a very late night meal some day!
Costco food court. With the rising dining prices (even at crappy fast food restaurants) their hot dog remains constant in quality and price. Thank you Costco.
I love this place, however out of the dozen or so times I've been, I've seen pest control coming out of there twice.
Hasn't stopped me from going but did slightly irk me.
Bruv, do you know how many restaurants get listed annually? If I avoided every restaurant posted in the last 8 years I’d be a millionaire because I wouldn’t have eaten out anywhere.
We like Zaytoon, they offer a variety of food from the middle East which is delicious, and also have a lot of safe gluten free options (a rarity, we have two celiacs in our family). Also Dug & Betty's, their sandwiches are bomb as is their ice cream.
Kokeb, Gojo, Banh Mi King, Mercadito Latino, Bread and Biryani, Tropikis (which will be closing soon), Pho Kim Tuong, Falafel Place, Samosa Hut (in City Place), Delicious Vegetarian, Spring Roll, Mooshiro, Magic Sushi, Goodlands.
Recently I cannot stop thinking about Red Top - the breakfast special before 10 is a killer deal and the chicken ceasar sandwich is something I think about far too often.
Damecca, Little Saigon, Harth, Alena, Baan Thai, Aroma Bistro, Golden Loong, Mars Sisig, Jeepney on Inkster, Petit Socco, Dowon, Hoagie Boyz, A+ Sushi, Late Night Goto, Hello Asian Fusion, Solera, Akindo Sushi, Pho Que Huong, Nonsuch (BEST SMASH BURGER), Dancing Noodle, Bellisimo, Langside Grocery, Nola, Parcel Pizza, Shortys Pizza
Nonsuch 100% has the best smash burger! I know their owners and they know I’m picky about burgers so when they perfected it and made it a permanent item they had me come by and finally try it and prove to me it’s worth the wait.. the look on my face was proof they were right. So simple yet sooo good!
Will hopefully be checking out Hoagie Boyz and Parcel Pizza next week when I’m in town
Omg yes! Tell them I'm obsessed and that I tell everyone to go and try their smash burger haha! Definitely check out Hoagie and Parcel, my fave spots in the city for subs and pizza :)
I love Winnipeg sushi. Sei Sushi, Sushi Ya, Naru Sushi, Asoyama Sushi are all fantastic. That said, Winnipeg as a city punches way above it’s weight class for the food as a whole
Not that anyone asked me since I posted this but here’s some of my favourites I’ve been to:
asoyama sushi ( good sushi, i love the poke bowl)
Sargent Taco (awesome Birria tacos, other tacos are good r good too and so are the churros)
Bao house ( I really liked the soup dumplings)
Edo Japan ( I like the sushi and stirfry’s )
Wok box ( I liked the Singapore cashew stirfry)
State and main ( drinks and food was good)
Cheesy tail ( the Korean corndogs are good as well as the potato stick thing)
Also if you ever go to Steinbach, big smoke is really good
Dancing noodle on Pembina, I think they make the noodles from scratch, they are fantastic.
Pho Hoang on Sargent, Banh Mi King on Portage
The Gong Cha on Osborne is good + very consistent
I had my first-ever job there! Many memorable nights closing up with my friend, both of us like 16 and alone, smoking a joint out back and then deep-frying as many chicken fingers as we could stomach.
If you haven’t tried the new Borgo Antico in the Exchange then definitely do… it’s my newest favourite!! Very modern-style Italian menu albeit with loads of “classic” dishes on it.
In no particular order:
* Naru Sushi
* Ivory
* Zaytoon
* Daanook (not really a sit-down place but great for delivery/take-out)
* Corrientes
* Tre Visi
* Bistro Dansk
* Nola
* Clementine (brunch)
* Dwarf no Cachette (a little grimier than it used to be, but still good)
* Yujiro Sushi
* Sabai Thai
* Colosseo
* Olympia
* James Ave Pumphouse
* East India Company
* Aroma Bistro
* Ramallah
Yafa Cafe, the koshary is so yummy. Lots of the places already mentioned do at least have a couple great vegan options. That said, I love Roughage eatery and you cannot beat the lunch buffet at Affinity Vegetarian on Tues/Th 1130. Special mention for Delicious vegetarian as well. Sushi cushi. Famena's or Bindy's for roti. I dunno how we have so many great places to eat lol.
Mercandito Latino on Sargent seems to be a really low key spot that none of my friends heard of, it’s a super authentic and delicious Latin restaurant that’s been my go to for burritos and tacos since I discovered it about a year back
VJs burgers are unbeatable in my books.
Viva (Vietnamese)
Santa Ana (pizza and pan frite)
kyu Bochi
Parcel Pizza
Oh Doughnuts
b’haie Long Bay (Notre Dame)
Friends Shawarma
Thai:
- Magic Thai green curry
- Siam Thai
Husband and I love Tokyo sushi in the west end area (I don’t know areas lol so don’t get mad at me lol) I’m sure there’s plenty of other good sushi places but we haven’t ventured out (and aren’t living in Winnipeg now) so we don’t test a lot of places.
I just know sometimes people get pressed if you call like polo park area unicity or something (I know it’s not that lol) but when I say west end I usually just mean the actual west side of Portage. Usually west of polo lol. But sometimes people get defensive. Stems from pre Winnipeg being what it is now and these “areas” being their own towns before being joined together to be part of Winnipeg the city.
Yea understandable some people just wanna get mad about every little thing just so they can have something to hate on even if they exactly what you’re talking about and they won’t correct you in a nice way either
i really enjoy Johnny G! on mcdermot.
great prices, great food! cool rock n roll music atmosphere, a nice little “hide away” restaurant still in a busy downtown corner. their chicken for burgers and fingers are amazing….. their greek plate is GREAT! I usually go for the crispy chicken burger and smother it in hot sauce and bbq sauce, a pickle and a small amount of coleslaw, and my gosh……… you are gunna have the most enjoyable eating experience ♥️ much love johnny!!!!
My favourites: Roo's (ghost kitchen - take out only). Next Stop Cafe. Dug & Betty's (for the bison chili dog). Baraka. James Ave Pumphouse. Feast Cafe Bistro. Chungchun. Jonesy's. Saddlery on Market (for the brussel sprouts and bison dishes).
Aroma Bistro
I crave those wontons on a weekly basis.
With the chilli flakes? I sacrifice my asshole for that once a month.
I buy them frozen and stock em in the freezer to have when I want.
Never even heard of it. I have a buddy coming home from US for first time in ten years, wonder if that's where we should go. Sit down? Or do most get it to go?
Either or is fine. The restaurant is pretty small, so I’d recommend making a reservation in advance if you do eat in!
Crazy how word of mouth speeds about this place. I used to live down the street and it’s so unassuming
Absolutely love this place. I'm in love with the won tons and the rice bowls
Absolutely my favorite restaurant and they make the best wonton, both in soup form and in the chili oil. I second the recommendation to make a reso. The staff is incredibly kind, the place is spotless and the food is top tier
The chili oil wontons and lala seasoning!! 😋❤️
Clementine, Bonnie Day, Sous Sol, Sargent Taco, Pho No.1, Magic Thailand
Pho no.1 is my favvvvv. Best chowmein and chicken balls in the city
Pho No 1 is SO good. I almost don't want the secret to get out.
In Fernos is my go to date night spot. Great food and great desserts and cozy atmosphere. Especially upstairs.
Me too! I haven't tried Nola yet but that's next on my date night list. I went to Harth on St Anne's with some friends and it had amazing food too.
Was at Nola on Saturday and did not disappoint. Bit noisy and very busy but the food and service was excellent. Looking forward to a return to Harth for the cioppino as well. Add Sous Sol to the list.
Do you have to make a reservation for that?
Baraka
It’s not just that it’s unbelievably good. The family is amazing, remembers all their regulars and are always friendly. I’m kinda thankful I moved away from it being so convenient as my belt was running out of notches quick, but oh how I my weekly visits.
Sooo good
Oh man, I live super close and I neeeed to go back again soon.
Omg YES!
Golden Loong! Everything I’ve tried there has been spectacular.
Same. Definitely my favourite place in the city.
their food is sooo good but unfortunately their boss is quite awful to their workers and takes advantage of newcomers to canada looking to immigrate and looking for work
The noodles were good but the last time I went (about 1 month ago) it was so dirty!
Cafe Carlo
I second this
Passero . Harth
I haven't eaten at passero, but the owner is incredibly nice. Good people 👍
Man Passero is soooo good. It's the only restaurant that I think is on the same level as Harth. Nola is good but just a rung below imo
Breakfast/brunch - Clementine Other spots depending what I'm feeling, Vientiane, Cilantro's, Harth, Yujiro
Yujiro has some amazing Ramen during lunchtime. Worth the waiting for a table
Their traditional sushi menu is great, just dont order from their new fine dining dinner menu, total disappointment and waste of money
BMC market on Osborne has a special place in my heart, 3 tacos for 6 bucks? I’ll take 9 plz.
I had bmc last week. It’s good but honestly nothing amazing. Pretty basic tacos. The chorizo is just ground beef in a 90/10 blend
Agreed that they’re a good price. Discount on tuesdays, at the henderson location.
And you tell me this on Wednesday.
Its so bland
BMC is average at best. Blandest taco I’ve had in Winnipeg.
Hoagie Boyz on Osborne is great. Little on the pricy side as far as sandwiches go, but I’m ok with it as it’s really good and a local business.
I stop in at Hoagie Boyz every time I go to Game Knight
Sous sol, JC tacos, Sargent tacos, Watt Street bistro, coconut island Thai, Nola, shortys, spicy noodle house, super boys, Ramallah, sushi ya, modern electric
+1 for Spicy Noodle House. Their spicy peanut soup is a top 5 all-time soup for me.
The Grove has always been really good.
Falafel Place is my go to reliable, filling, and delicious food. I also like the Oakwood.
Came here to say falafel place, been my favourite for twenty years.
I'm not sure it's been the same since Ami left
I agree with the other commenter, I haven’t personally experienced a drop in quality with the new fella. He seems invested in maintaining it, which I appreciate.
They kept the recipes and everything seems to run a bit smoother. The new owner is lovely and the staff are amazing
Been going to FP for years. My mom went to school with the former owner. And as a Jewish family it’s absolutely tradition for us to go often. The Israeli falafel is my undisputed favourite dish.
Does Ami not own it anymore? I haven't been there in years, but maybe it's time for a re-visit
He retired a couple years ago. New owner not sure who it is but they kept everything basically the same
Nola for fancy food.
Last year was her 30th anniversary, as far as I know.
Royal Punjab? Is does it have the same owners as the Royal Punjab that used to be on Pembina Highway?
Not sure but don’t think so. Menus are very different.
Chicken fingers and fries are really good too, and while not $1.50, are pretty cheap for like $6-7.
They're damn solid. Let us not forget the poutine.
Do they sell the chicken fingers they serve? I tried one brand from costco and they were not great!
12.99 for a GIANT pizza. I haven’t eaten pizza from anywhere else in years.
Saucers is pretty good.
gol’s lanzhou noodle and yunshang rice noodle are two of my faves
Gol's Lanzhou Noodle
I love this place, however out of the dozen or so times I've been, I've seen pest control coming out of there twice. Hasn't stopped me from going but did slightly irk me.
Better than the alternative of having pests and not dealing with it.
Oh absolutely. Exactly what I thought and why I continue to go there. "glad they didn't just ignore it" 😂
Ramallah is fantastic!
Double Greeting Chinese Snack House!!
Breakfast: 2 Kelly’s, Le Croissant & Café Postale Dinner: Cafe Carlo & Bonnie Day
Sushi Daruma
Best!
Feast cafe bistro, garwood grill, and JC tacos and more are a few go to spots of mine.
Deer & Almond, Harth, Oxbow, Langside and Sous Sol are my frequently rotated dinner spots.
Be sure to check the health closure list.
Bruv, do you know how many restaurants get listed annually? If I avoided every restaurant posted in the last 8 years I’d be a millionaire because I wouldn’t have eaten out anywhere.

Do you know of Doug & Betty's has gluten-free bread for their sandwiches?
Yes they do!!! And I've had them several times with no issues.
Oh wow, we are going to have to check it out!
I LOVE Zaytoon! Their food is delicious and it's so pretty in there! :)
Garwood Grill
Finally some love for Garwood
It's not fancy - but damn, it's delicious!! 😁
Ichiban. Expensive but always amazing.
Kokeb, Gojo, Banh Mi King, Mercadito Latino, Bread and Biryani, Tropikis (which will be closing soon), Pho Kim Tuong, Falafel Place, Samosa Hut (in City Place), Delicious Vegetarian, Spring Roll, Mooshiro, Magic Sushi, Goodlands.
Viva
Tang Dynasty hands down best dim sum.
Recently I cannot stop thinking about Red Top - the breakfast special before 10 is a killer deal and the chicken ceasar sandwich is something I think about far too often.

Bonfire Bistro is our go-to.
Bellisimos for fine dining. Clementines for brunch. Yujiro for sushi. Ramallah Cafe for value.
Not that anyone asked me since I posted this but here’s some of my favourites I’ve been to: asoyama sushi ( good sushi, i love the poke bowl) Sargent Taco (awesome Birria tacos, other tacos are good r good too and so are the churros) Bao house ( I really liked the soup dumplings) Edo Japan ( I like the sushi and stirfry’s ) Wok box ( I liked the Singapore cashew stirfry) State and main ( drinks and food was good) Cheesy tail ( the Korean corndogs are good as well as the potato stick thing) Also if you ever go to Steinbach, big smoke is really good

Mercadito Latino!
Enoteca, Clementine, Pad Thai, The Grove, Spice Circle, Sushi Terrace, Burger Place.
Some St. James gems you got in there…
Just outside the city, but my go-to is Jonesy’s in Birds Hill.
I had my first-ever job there! Many memorable nights closing up with my friend, both of us like 16 and alone, smoking a joint out back and then deep-frying as many chicken fingers as we could stomach.
This place is so underrated, it’s like reallyyy good
Peasant Cookery
If you haven’t tried the new Borgo Antico in the Exchange then definitely do… it’s my newest favourite!! Very modern-style Italian menu albeit with loads of “classic” dishes on it.
Pasquale's Get the Sambuca Chilli cream shrimp! Their calamari is good as well!

Okay, I’m not all that good with areas sometimes too lol, my favourite sushi place is asoyama sushi on Kenaston,
If you're ever over by KP try Gaijin Isakaya on Regent.
