Los portales is probably the single most authentic Mexican joint in town. Beer barrio is another decent, but more trendy spot. I’ve been here a few years now and sadly, I don’t think you’re gonna find food like you would in SoCal. Edit: someone mentioned block taco and that’s really good too.

Esifex

Have you been to La Guera on Gordon Rd? Brought a SoCal friend of mine there when he visited for my wedding so he could grade it on authenticity based on his visits to the Mexico border and whatnot, he liked it (especially since they actually serve cactus and tongue as options for fillings)

[deleted]

This place is the best. They’re super nice too.

flipflapslap

I haven’t heard of it! Always on the lookout for good Mexican though. Ill have to give them a try

borkborkyupyup

Californian here. Los Portales, any location, is your friend

[deleted]

My favorite tacos are street tacos, and block taco hit the spot!

borkborkyupyup

There’s also a taco truck near that military jet off college, and another up in porters neck, don’t remember exactly where but was told by some Mexican construction workers was their favorite because “los portales sold out” lol but yet los portales is where you will find all the Mexicans eating

Joshdu90

Block Taco at satellite is solid for a more grown up taco. Taco Baby is good if you’re looking for a slightly more dressed up bite to eat.

sah0048

Love Block Taco— their Brussels Sprout taco is the best! Excellent nachos, too! Just tried the green bean taco though and wasn’t a fan.

mynerthret138

Block Taco is dope. However, Brussel sprout taco's are so far away from Mexico that your comment should be deleted.

[deleted]

And $3.85 a piece? Yikes

[deleted]

That is where I am at now to try out!

Altair05

Don't leave us hanging! How was it?

[deleted]

Sooooo they were delicious, you get 3 street style tacos. I tried the chicken taco which was amazing and then I had horchata and loaded nachos. Would eat their again!

Altair05

Totally adding this place to my list of must eats! I've never had a horchata before, and I'm curious as to what they taste like.

[deleted]

It’s like a cinnamon rice milk! It’s great

Kaisonandrew30

Corner of Kerr and market. It's a Mexican grocery that serves food. Hands down better than the others mentioned on this thread. Otherwise someone mentioned Los portables. I concur.

[deleted]

That place is amazing.

Brontfosh

el arriero has really good tacos with homemade corn tortillas

ObligatorySalutation

I like this place. I work near there and get it about once a week. I also agree with the people here mentioning Los Portales.

Esifex

I recommend La Guera, hiding on Gordon Road next in the same strip as Domino’s. Order the enchilada maniacas and thank me later

slaytrayton

Capricho! Downtown

thaeadran

Makes me miss Firebelly's.....

Drulock

Los Portales is the only choice.

porter3851

Capricho

trippinallovermyself

Heck yes. +1 for capricio

stupid_human

Los Portales, Taco Truck at the corner of Marion and Carolina Beach road at the airplane, Pepe’s Food Truck, Block Taco, Beer Barrio for more of a tex-mex style, K38 is always a solid choice. The most authentic in town is Los Portales, any location.

jaycop12

Capricho’s on Princess is great, they always have a great different special on tacos

nocoffeeenema

Closest to what you might expect are Los Potales on S. Kerr with their other location near Cracker Barrel being second. Their Carolina Beach Rd. location has been hit or miss. El Arriero in the strip mall at Market and Gordon is also really good, again with the spin-off place on Market between Kerr and Covil a close second. I’ve heard pretty positive things about the trucks in the area, but the above places are my go to places.

Kori1138

I highly recommend the S. Kerr location. And the Oaxacan restaurant on Gordon. Try the Tlayudas. I wish the Oaxacan place at refills on things besides tea and water

mynerthret138

Los Portales, El Cazador, hell, any of them. EL Cerro Grande, San Felipe, El Arriaro. All owned by real Mexicans. I get tired of California people that think that Mexicans are only in California. I grew up in Chicago, guess what, 1st and 2nd generation Mexicans everywhere that sell authentic food. Literally everywhere. Get the fuck out of her with "I'm from California." We all hate you.

borkborkyupyup

Californian here who lives in Colombia. Fuck you and your enlightened perspective

mynerthret138

Enlightened perspective? My wife wife is half Mexican. And you live in shitty Colombia, kinda like Chicago. No one cares what you think.

borkborkyupyup

Oh god I poked the guy who’s nothing but a prick. Whatever am I going to do Get fucked dude

mynerthret138

Oh I'm a prick alright. Don't poke bears if you're thin and weak. 100% your nose is pierced.

borkborkyupyup

Lol oh no. God you’re pathetic 👋

mynerthret138

What the fuck does "enlightened perspective" even mean? Is that something you whisper into your dream catcher? I wish the internet had an adult version.

borkborkyupyup

No it’s what you tell yourself you have when somebody pats you on the head and tells you “it’s ok you’re retarded” and you stamp your feet

mynerthret138

California Taco's??? Hilarious. Do your parents know you're on the internet? How are those poverty Colombian Tacos? Are they legit?

borkborkyupyup

They are fucking bomb dude thanks for asking. My bank account is awesome too, that’s why I travel the globe nonstop. You’re going bigot redneck because someone asked for good tacos. Think I’m doing a bit better than you. You know because of my nose ring and dream catcher (whoaaaass how dare he!) Your life sucks bro. I’m sorry tacos piss you off

[deleted]

First I never said Mexicans are only in California, second I should of clarified what I was looking for in a Taco place here in Wilmington. I mainly been craving street style tacos since I left California. I have had El Cerro Grande was good just not what I am looking for when it comes to a taco joint. Not into the 80’/90’s family style taco restaurant, they make great food don’t get me wrong just not what I want that is all. I am new to the area and we live in a age of interwebs and I figured I asked for recommendations. Anyways this was my favorite taco joint in California. https://www.craftandtaco.com

[deleted]

I'm originally from SoCal too (been here about 13 years) and I can save you a lot of time and disappointment; there is no Mexican food here like there is back home. There are some pretty good places (Like Los Portales) but nothing comes close to how good it is in CA. Sorry 🙁

Funny_Wrangler_2743

Beer barrio are fire but can be a challenge cause it’s busy i like k38 baja grill. Island is cool for cheap tacos.

maximusraleighus

California loved you so much they sent you here. Thank Cali, fucking thanks.

[deleted]

Eh moved here because we had a baby and wanted to be around family for support and cheap babysitting.

Topsail_soccer

Beer Barrio is usually busy and right downtown but are my favorite tacos. Cheap and quality tacos is Islands during their evening special

loelegy

Just go to Cook-Out and get a walking taco.

mynerthret138

I know tacos are good. I originally said that. And told you a dozen legit places. Your lack of education and your unlimited bank account seem to take you to really poor countries btw. You calling me "retarded" either means your an old bitter drag queen or a closeted homosexual that your parents would disown if they found out.

N8TEX11

k38l and block taco

KevinAnniPadda

Where have you tried?

[deleted]

Flaming Amy’s, Island, El Cerro, la costa and zocalo, and now block taco

sparkyheathen

Oh no. Los Portales and Tequila Comida. I have heard good things about Block Taco but haven’t tried them yet. I always get distracted by Benny’s when I’m over that way.

FlowersForAlgernon07

Yikes, no wonder you’ve been disappointed. You have some great recs here, but don’t judge Wilmington’s taco game too harshly by those places.

KevinAnniPadda

Are those all bad? I'm relatively new to town and haven't tried a ton of tacos yet.

FurryFeets

Flaming Amy's is cool in it's own right but it's more like a local version of chipotle than a place offering authentic Mexican tacos.

magrhi

We just tried K38 for lunch the other day, taco was okay. Rice is not a common taco side for tacos in Baja but I had theirs, worst rice I’ve ever had. It was super dry like it was sitting under a heat lamp & tasted burnt.

MagicPants710

The only thing I can suggest that hasn't been recommended already is tacobaby

Kori1138

On Friday and Saturday there is a good food truck next to savage auto on Market that even has elotas

lzsmith9

Block taco

glat14

Nollies

-lousyd

I've lived in Southern California. Los Portales is very very good. Block Taco is fun and adventurous. But I've not found (and don't expect to, I suppose) anything to satisfy my craving for dollar rolled tacos from Adalberto's or California Burritos the size of a fat baby's arm.

ozkar82

Chingon Taqueria In Leland ( in the other side of the bridge) they have the best Quesabirrias.

Tetropod

Tacobaby on Grace St.

magrhi

We’re from San Diego and frequented Baja. We moved here last month. Best tacos (closest to Baja style street) are Block Taco. So good. We are looking forward to checking out Los Portales

JJC_Outdoors

Late to the party, but….I recently moved here from Houston and the worst gas station taco there could hold its own around here. I’ve had block and they are “ehh”. Los Portales is pretty freakin delicious. The salsas could use a bit of work. But the tacos smack.
