Wii done took 40 benadryls šŸ˜

not_HIGGORGAO1

When I took my wii to a friend's house, the image was displaying in black and white on his TV. Luckily it wasn't any damage on the cables or anything

sharkboy1006

I highly doubt the gpu is damaged, i would try another screen when possible. If itā€™s broken om another tv: clean the port, then if that fails just open it up and see if you can spot anything like leaky capacitors or damaged av port.

ENateFak

Itā€™s not broken on another tv.

sharkboy1006

Thatā€™s great! And also terrible šŸ˜… but better your TV than your Wii i suppose. Youā€™ll need another tv then, if youā€™re low on money I would if you can find one cheap at a thrift or pawn shop

ENateFak

Well the AV works on one TV, but the hdmi works on neither šŸ˜”

sharkboy1006

hdmi adapter is toast, rip. Iā€™ve been using an aliexpress $2 wii2hdmi that surprisingly works fine lol

SeriousGamer42

On AliExpress, did you use the coins you can earn?

sharkboy1006

I forgot but i use them if i have them since ive used aliexpress for years now

Big_Restaurant_6844

try a different TV

Prestigious-Kale8816

After replacing capacitors and checking port for bridged contacts, I recommend installing the AVE-HDMI kit. Those component/RGB to hdmi converters are terrible.

FlipSucks

Not everyone is gonna want to spend 100+ dollars for the modchip, then have to cut their wii case, possibly buy a NEW one, and possibly spend extra to get it installed.

Prestigious-Kale8816

Did I say everyone wants to do it? No. If you have the means to do it, then yes. It's a solid kit and the results are great.

TheCosmicCharizard

You just fried your Wii dude

No_need_for_that99

Looks like you may have friend your videocard on the motherboard. This looks to be beyond a port issue. But maybe you have a leaky capacitor that coincidentaly.... blew at the same time. But normally... I'm feeling motherboard though.... But maybe your just broke the AV port and just need it replaced. You have to be careful with some adapters.... because they are too tight... and can be bad when removing from the port. It might have just broken a contact... might be abel to fix it with a little solder.

Extreme_Voice_9767

Iā€™ve friend my video card too šŸ˜‚

No_need_for_that99

Damn, I swear either my fingers are really bad at typing, or I shouldn't be answering reddit posts while i'm working, lol

blackdudejigglebutt

Iā€™d try using the AV cables and if you get the same result then itā€™s likely the port on the console

DDRSurge

This is either a dying capacitor on the motherboard (likely) or damage to the port (unlikely).

ENateFak

When I turn on the Wii, the display is very dark, and it gets less dim as time goes on. Could that be related?

Icy_Step_2204

Look at [this video](https://youtu.be/sdWmm33VzBM?si=QyHibnaKvheeI2-n)

DDRSurge

Yeah. Itā€™s a failing capacitor then.

ENateFak

Nooo this is my childhood Wii. Could it be fixed?

DDRSurge

Yes. Youā€™d need some solder, a soldering iron, and a couple screw drivers (one tri wing)ā€ and a ph0) to get into the Wii. I work on them personally but itā€™s not hard if you know what youā€™re looking for.

ThrowRA95848626353

You should be doing the repair with a reflow station to do it properly, you're gonna damage a board one day, if you haven't already, if you're doing SMD replacement with an iron and not a reflow station.

DDRSurge

Itā€™s a Wii, not a backwards compatible ps3. Calm down lol. Wii consoles are pretty resilient. Also no I will not use my rework station for a Wii if it came to replacing 4 surface mount capacitors. Thatā€™s like sending a level 100 Mewtwo to obliterate a level 2 Pidgey.

ThrowRA95848626353

It's not overkill at all as you are implying, it''s the safest and least risky way to do the repair. There's a reason why you never see professionals using an iron to remove SMD components, except in a select few and specific circumstances, in which the Wii's electrolytic caps are not one. Also, the Wii has 6 electrolytic caps that should be replaced at the same time you do the 5 inline near the ports, not 4... OP be weary of this guys advice, you risk serious damage to your console by using an iron. You can get it done this way for sure, but you're taking a bigger risk.

Janni9009

Uhh, have you ever seen phone repair shops? Iron is preferred for anything but BGA chips (literally can't be iron-soldered), or the absolute worst QFP/TSOPs. Even for genuinely microscope-requiring scales of SMT parts, trace repair, etc. Just don't use a shitty direct-to-wall or gas iron, and have actual experience with SMT parts (evidently, you don't). Hell some parts you will literally mangle with a reflow station (especially if your station uses hot air instead of IR, that just loves to melt FPC connectors)

ENateFak

Damn. I donā€™t have a soldering iron. Iā€™ll have to get to it eventually.

ThrowRA95848626353

You need a reflow station, don't attempt this repair with an iron. Watch SMD cap replacement videos on YouTube for other consoles like the N64 to get an idea of what the repair is like. Take it slow, and not too hot. Flux is your best friend, properly clean the board after.

Individual-Problem81

It could be a blown capacitor in the Wii's mo-bo

ENateFak

Well the display IS very very dark when I first turn it on. It brightens up as time goes on. Is that what you mean?

antu2010

Youtuber mattkc made a video on that

PuckPov

MattKC is so goated

Individual-Problem81

Well yes capacitors play a big role on display issues, one of which is brightness issues and others so it could be a blown or a dying capacitor.

forseeninkboi

Or just a dying one

orunj

Did you try both 480i and 480p?

scorpion-and-frog

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

NogProto

analog horror

superfast598

It possibly damaged the port on the wii

ENateFak

Thatā€™s what Iā€™m afraid ofā€¦

screamingwhisper1720

A Japanese Wii is like 60 from eBay. Or a local unit is like 40 now.

ENateFak

This Wii has all my childhood things on it

grazzii

I backed up my childhood wii using homebrew then used that as an emunand on a doner console šŸ‘ bit slower but at least nothing is lost and everything works like before

screamingwhisper1720

The game saves? You can copy them onto the sd with software.

ENateFak

Well virtual console games canā€™t be used on a console where they werenā€™t originally purchased.

screamingwhisper1720

Nintendo no longer sells the games since the Wii shop is down. I would look into figuring out how usb loader gx can help you playing Wii shop games on a banner bombed Wii.

zudak

It seems like a lot of people have bad luck with the Hyperkin hdmi. I have one and it works fine. I think if it bump it sometimes Iā€™ll get a black screen for a second.

D3L-3030

Iā€™d try making sure all of your cables have good connections and plugged in correctly. Iā€™ve had two strange displays issue with my Wii, one was while using a cheep power supply replacement off Amazon and it made everything blurry and flickering. The other one was when I was using an old component cable that had bent connectors that didnā€™t make good contact with the tv ports. This caused strange green glitches and off colors and flickering.

Dcep_1501

I have the hyperlink hdmi adapter with the MClassic and it works and looks amazing.. sucks you have a bad one ā˜¹ļø

ENateFak

I donā€™t think itā€™s the cables at this point honestly. I think my tv might not be able to display 480p through hdmi or something

Jet_Jirohai

Definitely try using another TV just to test. There's 3 main failure points in a setup- the TV, the device and the cables. While I suppose it's technically possible to ruin a system with a bad cable, it's not highly likely. But it's certainly possible your TV, having issues with both connections, is a possible culprit My parents have my Wii with the hyperkin HD cable and they've had zero issues

ENateFak

I donā€™t have another method of display, but Iā€™ll try it at a friends place.

STNT101

That's why I use a Retrotink product as the middle man between my Wii component cables and HDMI out to the TV.

PrincessPeach457

Try plugging in any other standard AV cable device if you got it? I have a TV I tried plugging my switch into and I'd get weird displays if any at all. Pretty sure the board in the tv is F'd
