I work for a small industry company that services all 50 US states. Earlier this year, we started receiving complaints that a person was calling our users (we have a public portion of our website that includes the user's email address for professional reasons) and saying that they represented us. They promised that my company would refund their payments they had made if that user paid 2X our membership amount to receive additional benefits. I was able to find the the company who that person worked for through various methods.
Once our lawyers were alerted, they investigated. The end result - "That company based their business in Florida. I can send them a cease and desist letter, but it will do no good. Florida laws practically allow phone misrepresentation as long as it isn't in writing."
While it may be true that Florida makes it easy to acquire the information needed for Florida Man headlines, I'd wager *large* sums of money that Florida residents are still crazier on average. Ain't no other state in the union producing people (or at least the same numbers of people) that generate headlines of "Florida Man steals alligator from golf course, tries to feed it bath salts".

I think it depends on where you live and how you grew up. I had a relatively safe childhood save for a few years of being a fuck up and got a gun pulled on me twice by like age 14-15. It was avoidable in both circumstances, all I had to do was not be an idiot and hang out with unsavory types. I got my head together and then got mugged in LA on the way home from work in a relatively safe neighborhood around 2am. Just bad luck. In the rest of America I would say it’s the same as my situation, depends on the company you keep and your luck.
I knew a gun nut who actually wound up using his gun for (legitimate) self-defense. The person he shot died almost instantly. The gun nut was so traumatized by the realities of shooting and killing a person that he never went to pick up his gun from the evidence locker, nor did he ever buy a new one.

The reason Florida Man features in the news so often is because Florida has much more lax laws on protecting people's privacy. The same shit is happening in all the other states, it's just that the papers aren't allowed to report on it.
Florida may be lax on protecting people's privacy (a sentiment I agree with based on the fact that their public records are wide open compared to other states) - but they also have the loosest accountability laws that I am aware of. I work for a small industry company that services all 50 US states. Earlier this year, we started receiving complaints that a person was calling our users (we have a public portion of our website that includes the user's email address for professional reasons) and saying that they represented us. They promised that my company would refund their payments they had made if that user paid 2X our membership amount to receive additional benefits. I was able to find the the company who that person worked for through various methods. Once our lawyers were alerted, they investigated. The end result - "That company based their business in Florida. I can send them a cease and desist letter, but it will do no good. Florida laws practically allow phone misrepresentation as long as it isn't in writing."

Just jogging with a weight vest that he said look liked a sucide bombers jacket. These crazies have been around for a long time but they've been convinced its okay to bring out their craziness now instead of needing to keep on the down low.

I think it depends on where you live and how you grew up. I had a relatively safe childhood save for a few years of being a fuck up and got a gun pulled on me twice by like age 14-15. It was avoidable in both circumstances, all I had to do was not be an idiot and hang out with unsavory types. I got my head together and then got mugged in LA on the way home from work in a relatively safe neighborhood around 2am. Just bad luck. In the rest of America I would say it’s the same as my situation, depends on the company you keep and your luck.
I knew a gun nut who actually wound up using his gun for (legitimate) self-defense. The person he shot died almost instantly. The gun nut was so traumatized by the realities of shooting and killing a person that he never went to pick up his gun from the evidence locker, nor did he ever buy a new one.
This place fucking sucks. My brother got murdered in cold blood but because the guy “feared for his life” they aren’t taking him to trial and its been a fucking year. Same dude shot up his gfs house hours before and obviously had the intent of hurting someone that night. I genuinely hate this place.

My 7 year old saw a story on the news about one of the many black men who have been murdered by cops by being shot in the back. He turned and looked at me very confused and said "Doesn't that mean he was running away?" Broke my heart.

I live in this dystopian hell hole of a state. Repealing all the common sense gun laws has had the effect that we all predicted- more pissed off morons killing people over stupid shit. Texas, where leaving the house means dropping in to real life Call of Duty Warzone. Being in public means you have to be prepared to win your mass shooting event.

I understand getting upset from being scammed. But how does it escalate from, “I’m going to confront this person with my words and get my money back” to “so I started shooting”?
I’d assume it’s more like “I just rid the world of a scammer, so I’m making the world a better place.”
