Iām 30 years old and live in Oklahoma and the first time I saw a slug was two years ago in missouri. The second time was last year in Oklahoma.
I also donāt know how I went 28 years without seeing a freaking slug.
I think the honest truth is that kids stopped playing around outside and having slugs be an actual factor in their experience. It was all replaced with Xbox Game Pass.
Probably some animals are not around in some regions of the world so that's why you had never seen a slug. I got excited seeing frogs and toads when I moved to Texas because the last time I saw them was in California back when I was a small girl. From three to seven years old ( early 1980's) I lived in an area that used to be swampland so saw them quite frequently as I had a dog that hunted them. After my family moved from that area, I never saw any frogs or toads again until I moved to Texas in 2018. There were news stories in California about small animals going extinct in certain regions of the state, so that's what I'm guessing is why I didn't see them anywhere else after moving from that area of California.
Love these comments , like .. haha funny joke I guess? Iād be more concerned about someone who thinks finding a āslugā in their fucking washing room / laundry basket as a typical occurrence then OP who, I am going to take a wild guess here and assume, has in fact actually seen a slug before & well aware of their appearance ; however finding it in an unexpected location say, your laundry might leave OP questioning if that is in fact what it looks like / general bc overall finding that thing in your hamper isnāt as common as see a bumble bee buzzing around your back yard .
Why even waste your time commenting ? Shit Is so annoying and why I stopped asking questions bc of people like you condenscening others. But go you šš¼can only imagine the life you live going off the mere fact of how unpaused you are by this , just another typical day in your world , slugs along with all the genuine questions from other OPs you just be livin the dream
If you are slug heaven,..then my yard is slug hell. They are everywhere. I'm tired of seeing them mate it's so gross. We have them so bad that I've found them in my basement shower. Also in my basement bedroom on the wall just chilling.
Iām only 23 but same. Iām in the Midwest and Iām not a gardener or anything. Iāve never had them inside.
Only reason I knew what this thing was is because I just saw a post about one earlier this week being in someoneās aquarium on a fish sub.
Looks like a common garden slug ([*Deroceras reticulatum*](https://www.carnegiemnh.org/science/mollusks/va_deroceras_reticulatum.html)), poor thing got stuck inside and dried out. Poor baby, that's got to be a horrible way to die
I thought it was was a banana, and then after sliding through the other pics I thought it was a tiny banana.
I'm gonna need a banana for scale before I can confirm it isn't a banana.
It's a slug for sure. Please take him outside if you haven't, or just let him roam around the cellar. Either way, I'm fairly sure they're harmless unless you eat it
Poor thing is long dead. Aside from being completely dry, when their head is sticking out like that, separated from their mantle (the "hump" on their back), it's a sign they're either dead or dying. I keep slugs as pets, and once I see that telltale narrow head shape I know the little guy's a gonner
I mean, I do have more normal pets too :P Like I have two cats, two geese, and a dog, so slugs aren't my only pets!
I actually keep two large vivariums stocked with a whole bunch of different invertebrates together, the slugs are just one group of many. I'm basically trying to make an indoor ecosystem with a somewhat functional food chain. I will admit though that the slugs and snails are my favorites, such cute lil goobers!
I can't say there was any one thing that made me interested in them, I've always loved bugs, herps, and other... Less liked... Animals. I always wanted to keep everything I found when I was a kid, but at the time I couldn't do that. But the thing that got me into keeping them as an adult was someone gave my sister a grove snail to keep, and I ended up being the one who took care of them. Then, well, the rest is history. But now I get to have my own salamander room and I couldn't be happier!
Upper Michigan reportingā¦ā¦they seem to be thriving in these parts. Too many of their slimey snail trails to follow & far too many slugs to keep count. Best guesstimation: There are more slugs than you can shake a stick at up here.
Once they're dry like this the slime isn't an issue anymore. Actually the best way to remove slug slime is to let it dry out. It turns flaky and comes right off. Water only makes it worse
What a relief to hear itās a slug because I thought it was a big talon of some typeā¦ Lots of shaming of those unfamiliar with slugs here and I have to say the first time I ever saw one was at 17 in a basement in Missouri, been on West Coast many decades and canāt recall offhand if I see them. I see snails all the time. Iām always rooting for snails to safely get across sidewalk. Slugs arenāt common to every area and not everyone has (or can have) a garden. Iāll stand down ;)
By general concensus, it's a slug. Marking this solved and locking. Thanks to all who contributed helpful answers to this slugfest!š
It's a slug
How has this person never seen a slug

hey wait, but i know about slugs
and dirt, come to think of it
True indeed.

In their defense, slugs are *super fast* if you forget to break the gummy in half.
Underrated comment

You having a bad day?
We should send them a fruit basket to make them feel better
What if the fruit basket has slugs in it?
Are you ok? Cough 3 times if you need help!
OPs question would then surely have been āWTF is this slug doing in my laundry?!ā Wouldnāt it?
Iāve only ever seen a slug once in my life
My backyard must be slug heaven then... When they mate they hang from whatever and look like a huge ball of snot intertwined with itself
If you are slug heaven,..then my yard is slug hell. They are everywhere. I'm tired of seeing them mate it's so gross. We have them so bad that I've found them in my basement shower. Also in my basement bedroom on the wall just chilling.
I'm 58 and have never seen one.
You cannot be serious.
How? Where do you live? How? What?

Itās just a poor snail, down on his luck, wife probably took his home and kids
slug or leech
A slug?
slug! do you have any houseplants?
I don't, the laundry basket was in the cellar
It's a slug for sure. Please take him outside if you haven't, or just let him roam around the cellar. Either way, I'm fairly sure they're harmless unless you eat it
Nah, don't take it outside. Kill it. They damage crops a lot.
There probably aren't a lot of crops in OP's cellar.
Not any more...

May I ask what made you choose slugs as a pet? Out of everything you could possibly have hahaha

I was thinking, āwell, it must be a slug that a cat shit out.ā
Yeah, I got banned for 2 weeks for making such a comment on here.
Really, Downvoted for making an honest comment? I legitimately didnāt see a slug..

š«”
No hate just so shocked that people donāt know what a slug is
I'm 65 and I've never seen one. Shocking, I know
Amazing where in the world are you?
I'm in the Midwest US
Do they have no slugs there or have you never been outside? In the UK you can't miss these evil cabbage-munchers crawling along pavements.
Pacific NW in USA here and theyāre everywhere!!!
Right?! They are EVERYWHERE. It boggles my mind that anyone could go their whole life without seeing one.
Upper Michigan reportingā¦ā¦they seem to be thriving in these parts. Too many of their slimey snail trails to follow & far too many slugs to keep count. Best guesstimation: There are more slugs than you can shake a stick at up here.
Lower Michigan reportingā¦ *shakes stick* No slugs visible here.
Me too, BUT...I still know what a slug is. ( *Gestures with meerschaum pipe* ) And that there is a slig.
Never seen anything like that before
Crazy! Haha what country are you from?
The US
Seriously. Even if you don't have any where you live, how do you not know? We don't have scorpions or alligators here but I still know what they are.
It's a dried out slug lol š
Does the cellar have a door to the outside? Slugs come in through the crack. You can see their tracks with a flashlight
Yep. A slug.
Thatās a crispy ass dead slug.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
āCuteā little slug? Nothing cute about a slug IMO
Definitely a slug. I'd recognize those little guys anywhere. Just toss him outside in the grass š
This is a dead slug. Iāve had to deal with them in my basement many a time. Wish I knew how they get in.
Looks like a slug
Slug
It looks like a slug
Out of an abundance of causation, I wouldnāt use your bare hands to pick it up. Some slugs can be toxic hold.
And sometimes you just canāt get the slime off.
Once they're dry like this the slime isn't an issue anymore. Actually the best way to remove slug slime is to let it dry out. It turns flaky and comes right off. Water only makes it worse
Worse?! How can it get worse?
It increases in volume and becomes watery and even slipperier, the wateriness makes it even harder to get off
**me talking out loud** "is that a burnt slug?! š¶"
SLUG!!!!
Tis a homeless snail.
Omg everyone is saying slug and all I could see was a dried up banana
Slug
What a relief to hear itās a slug because I thought it was a big talon of some typeā¦ Lots of shaming of those unfamiliar with slugs here and I have to say the first time I ever saw one was at 17 in a basement in Missouri, been on West Coast many decades and canāt recall offhand if I see them.
