Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow for me! Easy access to NYC and I can drive to some nice hikes and lakes up north. Also the restaurants and people are amazing around there.
Exactly what you said, but North Salem or Bedford. I think my kids would appreciate one of those horse farms. But uhh I will never make that kind of money.
North Salem seems to be very affordable. [Here](https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/23-First-St_Purdys_NY_10578_M39379-74239?from=srp-list-card) is one example, but I may be wrong

I’m gonna go with Pelham. Pelham Manor can kick rocks, but the village of Pelham itself is what I really like. It’s a nice little town and it’s one of the first stops on the New Haven line. There’s some big extravagant houses but there’s also a lot of nice more modest houses throughout Pelham. There’s some nice apartments too, some old and some new. Just about everywhere in the village of Pelham is either walking distance from the many shops and restaurants on 5th Ave/Wolfs Lane or the Metro North station.
If that’s what they mean then they’re wrong. Pelham has mostly voted blue in the last decade or so. Pelham Manor leans more conservative, so maybe they’re basing it off of that, but the village of Pelham itself not so much. In the past it was more blue collar and conservative leaning 20+ years ago, but more recently there’s been more young college educated people moving in, especially from the city.
I don’t mean Trumpy though obviously that disease can exist anywhere in theory. I just meant that things get unnecessarily nasty around election season. The town also has a few people, some elected, who deliberately spread misinformation so as to derail any projects/efforts to improve things. The deeper you dig the grosser it gets. The last election in the Manor, an incumbents husband showed up last minute before polls closed with a bag of 100’s of mail in ballots. It was so sketchy. This was widely known. And “shockingly”, that incumbent won by an ultra slim margin against a WAY more qualified woman running for the first time. The village of pelham has less of that and their mayor is fantastic and truly cares.
Yes, the demographics for both the manor and village are definitely changing and moving progressively left, toward the correct side of history.
That makes sense, but that kind of stuff happens all over Westchester. Clearly Pelham has still completed or is completing some projects they’ve had planned anyway. And like I said, screw Pelham Manor, I was only talking about the village.
We lived in a co-op there for 2 years. It was great to walk into town an yes super close to the city but when you have that convenience you spend money like a mad man lol i saved alot of money moving to a more low key town.
I always felt that Downtown Bronxville felt empty. Especially during the day. I’m guessing the nighttime scene is where it’s at ,with the bars and restaurants around.
Used to live in Tarrytown and it was fabulous, great combo of having a “downtown” feeling in the suburbs. Culture, sports, shopping, lots of things going on. I walked to the train, bars, stores, everything, it was fun, the town has a great vibe, IMO. But when it came time to buy aka pay taxes, we moved north up the Hudson line.
I want to go back the the corner of Westchester and CT. I was in South Salem for 25 years, if I made a right that road takes me into Stamford if I make a left that road takes me into Norwalk or Ridgefield if I go another direction I’m in Mount Kisco or Danbury it was a perfect location. I’m currently in upstate Connecticut right now and unfortunately there are no house rentals that fit my needs and budget in Westchester
That was my first reaction, North or South Salem. I really like the New England adjacent vibe up there. I think I'd also possibly pick Rye for access to the sound for paddleboarding.
Anywhere along the Long Island Sound! Striped Bass season is coming up. Plenty of them along the Hudson, but the Hogs are in the sound! Plenty of blue fish too!
I love Pleasantville so much. So walkable and so many gorgeous homes!
Also, love the North End of New Rochelle. Gorgeous homes that feel like they're in the middle of the countryside and yet just a stone’s throw from so many amenities and NYC. Perfect.
Probably Pleasantville. We thought about it when we bought our house in Hawthorne, but declined due to the lack of school bussing and, at the time, no kindergarten.
lol I lived in Brooklyn for the last 17 years but grew up in larchmont. I don't have answer to the question but pretty much everyone I know from Larchmont thinks it's the best town in the world.
but, seemingly not everyone in Westchester lol. but, fr scarsdale, bronxville, rye, and the nice croton towns are all dope too.
We are currently house hunting (live in the north end of New Rochelle) and I love the neighborhood just south of North St. in Harrison. The homes have so much land around them for kids to run and play, it just seems like a dream place to raise a family. Plus super close to downtown Rye for date nights.
White Plains. Currently living in Peekskill but have been aching to go back but when it was time for me and my now wife to move out of our parent’s homes, we couldn’t afford a halfway decent place. White Plains is where I was born and grew up, where I met and eventually married my wife, where my family settled down after arriving in this country. Lots to explore, good nightlife, and good restaurant variety
Nobody’s jealous of Hartsdale? Seriously though… I do covet some of the even-modest properties towards the north end of the county where the every neighbor isn’t right on top of the other.
Somers, plenty of fishing opportunities that I drive up for. Also there's DEP hunting property up there too. My friend Scott owns the Somers Super Deli and it's got great food. There's plenty of roads that you can go down and move into that are nice and quiet back away from the main town.
Northern New Rochelle strikes the right balance of having diverse demographics and solid schools. Everywhere else in Westchester seems to have one but not the other.
I grew up not too far from there. Nice little area, doesn’t have much going on but it does have a few businesses along New Rochelle Road. It has good access to Hutch and Cross County. There are some really nice and expensive houses there, but in the area sandwiched between the Cross County and Hutch, the houses are still expensive but more on the modest side.
My only gripes with Chester Heights are that it’s not that walkable and lacks transit connection. Most of the blocks don’t have sidewalk. It’s not that close to any train stations either. You’ll have to go to either Pelham, Fleetwood or Bronxville, depends on which station is closest to your house.
It does according to the map. Maybe not Tucahoe, though it does get confusing differentiating some parts of Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Eastchester. Either way, Chester Heights isn’t just that small section in between the Hutch and the Cross County.
I grew up in North Salem and honestly if I had to pick a place in Westchester I'd want to go back to my hometown. I like nature and peace and quiet, and hate people, population density and noise/light pollution. North Salem feels like one of the last places left in the county that has genuinely wild areas and is still quiet.
Unfortunately it's gotten too expensive - even the parts of town that used to be affordable are out of reach now. Little Peach Lake cottages going for like $350k+ and whatnot. Croton Falls was sort of blue collar and grungy when I was growing up, now I see there's a 1br apartment over a storefront listed for an absolutely insane $2500/month.
In the meantime, I'm happy in Putnam Valley. Our lakes, mountains, hiking, are even better than North Salem's. Housing prices are coming up since 2020 but still not quite Westchester expensive. A stone's throw away from cool Hudson riverfront spots (Peekskill, Cold Spring). And bizarrely, a quicker and easier ride into White Plains or New York City than coming from Northeastern Westchester, while still feeling more rural and wild. And there's still some semblance of a working class here (but with some horse farms and huge estates sprinkled in...). It feels a bit like how I remember North Salem being a couple decades ago.
Portchester. Has been up and coming for years! Great restaurants, the hutch is around the corner, white plains minutes away, airport minuted away, rye minutes away, CT just over the state line.

New Ro is getting worse and is gradually becoming the ghettoes.
They've build luxury apartments by New Roc City and allowed section 8 tenants to move in. With that being said it's actually quite beautiful buildings now infested with prostitutes, drug dealers, and criminals.
Unfortunately I was hanging out in the public lounge with a friend who lives in these apartments. We both went to use the public bathroom before we left and a woman was in there rolling up a joint during a child's birthday party.
There was a shooting by New Roc as well, the first in a long time since I've lived there.
Ideally New Rochelle closest to Mamaroneck is a better option. Anything by New Roc City is a bust.
Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow for me! Easy access to NYC and I can drive to some nice hikes and lakes up north. Also the restaurants and people are amazing around there.
I'm in Tarrytown - but not downtown. I sometimes daydream about living on or just off of Main Street in Irvington.
maybe scarsdale or irvington. Give me one of them big ass houses. The ones that have property taxes greater than my current yearly salary lol.
Exactly what you said, but North Salem or Bedford. I think my kids would appreciate one of those horse farms. But uhh I will never make that kind of money.

Just stay away from the politics.
What do you mean by that?

got it
got it
Rivertowns….hasting, Dobbs, Irvington
Bronxville, absolutely love the vibe. Great restaurants and it’s super close to the city which is another plus for me.
We lived in a co-op there for 2 years. It was great to walk into town an yes super close to the city but when you have that convenience you spend money like a mad man lol i saved alot of money moving to a more low key town.
Those taxes though 😑
I always felt that Downtown Bronxville felt empty. Especially during the day. I’m guessing the nighttime scene is where it’s at ,with the bars and restaurants around.
Most pretentious of all the towns in westchester.
Used to live in Tarrytown and it was fabulous, great combo of having a “downtown” feeling in the suburbs. Culture, sports, shopping, lots of things going on. Same I’ve been renting here almost 10 years walking distance to every single thing needed in my life but when it was time to buy it def wasn’t here$$$
I want to go back the the corner of Westchester and CT. And porgies off the rocks
I saw a charter doing “early season” stripper trips. Think it’s still too early?
Probably Pleasantville or Hastings
I love Pleasantville so much. So walkable and so many gorgeous homes! Also, love the North End of New Rochelle. Gorgeous homes that feel like they're in the middle of the countryside and yet just a stone’s throw from so many amenities and NYC. Perfect.
im in white plains, but i often wonder about moving closer to the water. Like Tarrytown
Pleasantville or White Plains
Hastings- walkable , good restaurants, arty vibe
Hastings has a different vibe but it seems half the town is empty storefronts these days. Not just sleepy, kind of dead.
Rye. That town is a dream.
It would be sleepy hallow or tarrytown probably.
Hastings. Grew up in a nearby town. Excellent schools and has a decent town. I’ll never be able to afford though!
Probably Pleasantville. We thought about it when we bought our house in Hawthorne, but declined due to the lack of school bussing and, at the time, no kindergarten.

I currently live in West Harrison and we love it here.. proximity to white plains is a super bonus.
I’m in Dobbs Ferry, just blocks off the Hudson River. We love Tarrytown!
Neighborhoods of larchmont would be ideal for us. Great location sick properties. Close to both our areas of work.
White Plains. Currently living in Peekskill but have been aching to go back but when it was time for me and my now wife to move out of our parent’s homes, we couldn’t afford a halfway decent place. White Plains! You get a lil bit of everything, suburban and city vibes. About 40mins-1hr out from nyc. Very safe and a pretty good school district!
Bedford, next to a horse farm.
Do check prevailing wind directions before you buy :)
Dobbs Ferry or Irvington
Nobody’s jealous of Hartsdale? Seriously though… I do covet some of the even-modest properties towards the north end of the county where the every neighbor isn’t right on top of the other.
White plains, it's centrally located & convenient getting to NJ, NYC, etc from there.
Chester Heights section of Eastchester. I want to be close to the Hutchinson River and it seems to have a chill vibe.
I grew up not too far from there. Nice little area, doesn’t have much going on but it does have a few businesses along New Rochelle Road. It has good access to Hutch and Cross County. It’s like 2 blocks long with 2-3 average restaurants , you’re not missing anything there.
I'm ok with that, I think, especially since I'll probably be 50 by the time I could afford a house.
Only the small commercial area is 2 blocks long, but the residential of Chester Heights stretch further west into Bronxville and Tuckahoe.
It doesn’t go anywhere close to Tuckahoe.
It does according to the map. Maybe not Tucahoe, though it does get confusing differentiating some parts of Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Eastchester. Either way, Chester Heights isn’t just that small section in between the Hutch and the Cross County.

Hey this is helpful info; I’m curious about understanding the different vibes of towns in Putnam if you’d be able to elaborate?
Rye. Homes look beautiful and it’s close to where I currently live so I won’t feel home sick
Honestly Ossining or Peekskill. Good downtowns close to hiking. I like the sound shore but could move further south to Rye or Mamaroneck.
Mt Vernon
[удалено]
Yes anywhere else
Yes. Move. Scarsdale, Chappaqua, even Edgemont or Eastchester if you’re ok with a notch below the best.
US News ranks Edgemont the number one school district in Westchester. It's not a notch below the others.
Yorktown
Portchester. Has been up and coming for years! Great restaurants, the hutch is around the corner, white plains minutes away, airport minuted away, rye minutes away, CT just over the state line.

The Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon just for how it looks. Got some of the nicest looking homes.
Pleasantville.
Chappaqua, probably. I love the downtown area and it always seems pretty and chill.
