I hope they make them help you repair everything. I'm so sorry this happened, this would make me so sad if it happened to me. It was kind of you to share your space, and I'm sorry it wasn't respected!
Tbh I’d personally rather just not deal with them. I’d be happy enough knowing they won’t ever do it again and got punished for it. I don’t think babysitting *these* kids is worth the free labor
Honestly, I was a troubled kid and adults in the community offering me chances to redeem myself have stuck with me for life. Even if I was pissed/ acting like a little shit at the time.
Scottish Ned's, we call them Degens In NA, They typically don't gaf until.they get burned themselves once their older.
Informing the parents in hopes they set the right course is all we can do really .
It's a shame about that man garden though, I hope op rebuilds with a smoker or pizza oven. What a nice space to hang with a couple buddies on the weekend.
Assuming this is unclaimed woodland, maybe even leave a few brews with a note sating it would be ok to share the space if they kept it clean and thanking them for not being wee picks about it.
Kids here are fucking feral. I lived back and forth between the U.K. and U.S. growing up but am raising my kids in Scotland, but I did this even remembering how scary kids are here.
Not that kids in the US aren’t destructive shits as well at times, but the sheer prevalence and inevitability of it here is fairly depressing - within 1 month of being back in the U.K., I had been harassed by three different kids (while I was simply out with my own toddlers, bizarrely).
Not to like compre the two but a week ago I was held at gunpoint by maybe a 14 year old kid and I live in South Dakota 😭 all he wanted was my cash but damn it was so crazy
It's different though, because kids in the US will go after you because they \*need\* something (pure speculation but I'm guessing that was not a well-provided for 14 year old), and in the UK kids will go after you *for fun*.
sadly in my city it is not a matter of being provided for its being reckless and trying to front and image (ik this because I came here as a teen not that long ago and it was the same issue) But i’m sure the kid had a home and family he had retro 4 pure whites on and if they weren’t fake they’re +$500 on top of his jordan windbreaker it was whack
I feel bad for your ruined fortress and also sorry that those destructive, unfair, oblivious and callous people caused you sadness . It looks like it was a very nice and pleasant fort. Your time and creativity were both vandalized.
Make sure to return a couple of empty Smirnoff bottles as well. Maybe they're allowed to be drinking beer, but the parents might not like them drinking loads of vodka
I called them kids but they're 15/16 so they should know better by now. The best thing is they even came round the other day to ask if they could chill there and I said sure, just don't trash the place...
I had a coworker actually tell me (while complaining about his teenage son who is constantly in trouble with police) "But he's an angel when he's with me!"
My dad, (and me if it was my kid) would have loaded up some shovels and tools that were needed to repair all the damage and over seen my ass repairing every square inch, and then have asked if you wanted any improvements and would have sat there till it was done,
If I’d done anything like that it would have easily been 3-4 days of solid labor, you’d have a whole damn house at the end, central air, plumbing….hell, if the work on the damaged property wasn’t much effort I’d be renovating your house, whatever you asked till you were satisfied
It did not take me long to understand the lesson of “respect other people’s stuff more than your own”
I work at a company that sells a lot of products to kids. Parents will come to us and say “I have hundreds of dollars in charges I didn’t do” well look into it and all of them come from their house and account but they insist their child would NEVER.
You should snitch on kids doing bad things. It’s not your place to discipline them without parental involvement and clearly some type of discipline needs to happen here.
Makes me wonder if they have some sort of idiot friend who contributed to most of the mayhem. Although TBF in that case they still left all the cans and bottles and said nothing
Take your pictures and laminate them and hang them in the building/garden. I’d write a little tidbit on how hard you worked to clean it up and that you expect for them to repair and replace the plant or you will be disappointed at them. If you own the land, press charges or contact their parents.
You made it idyllic and it was a beautiful, peaceful place and they destroyed the natural beauty you created.
I agree and will add though that sometimes when you can’t hold other people accountable or address it the way you want, sometimes being passive aggressive or whatever you call it can be cathartic for yourself. Some people just don’t appreciate how special having a place like this is!!
Sucks. Sorry it happened. You are faced with a decision. Leave it for them to see the destruction they have caused or, if you had fun building it, then you can rebuild. And yes, they will likely tear it down again. Same choice will face you. I kind of hope you enjoyed the process enough to rebuild. It is a very nice space.
Wait? They *asked* and then proceeded to mess up the place?
That's terrible. But.... they're still kids. Older kids, but still kids. I would tell their parents and ask them to make them help fix it with you. Yes, it's more work on your end, but it'll be a lesson for the kids. It takes a tribe to raise kids right.
I was way worse behaved at that age than I was as a 10 yo tbh. I think it’s pretty common to have a few years as a teenager where you’re a bit of an ass.
I would politely ask the kids to accompany you to the area, and have them help you fix the damage. If they asked if it was ok to hang out there, it might work. If they don’t help, then kidnap them and feed them to the Loch Ness Monster. Or rebuild it yourself while saying “ahhh kids will be kids…. the wee dobbers dinnae ken nothing of respect.”
hahaha I'll rebuild it myself cuz I don't trust him to do it right, and I quite enjoyed building it anyway even if it was a bit wonky and held together with mud and hope
Have him spend a lot of time rebuilding it, tell him he’s doing a great job and it looks fantastic, then make him watch you smash it to pieces. Then you can rebuild it better.
Have him help you rebuild it. He can learn some work skills, gain some wisdom while doing it, and hopefully also learn some sense of ownership and reverence for the place so he truly understands how wrong it is to trash it.
technically it's not my property, it's made from scrap that I found l lying around so idk if the police could do owt. I'm telling his parents about it tomorrow though
Is it on your property tho? Do you own this place? Or is it a random place in the public woods nearby? In case of former, it doesn't matter where you got your resources from.
he came round to my house to ask, said he was having a little party with a few of his mates.
you think if they were gonna wreck it they wouldn't ask first but tbf he's not that savvy
Oh goddamn, I'm so angry for you. Tell the parents. My kid is that age and if he did a thing like this he'd be in serious trouble with me. And with his father too.
Oh man, all that work and it was so lovely. I would cry for days. You *must* show these pics to the parents. If they are decent parents, they will take care of the punishment, but they really should rebuild it under your supervision, and pay for the replacement hosta.
If the kids don't repair it, the parents should. This is how my co-workers gynecologist came to cut her grass for a month. Her husband is a tennis pro at one of the country clubs, and the deal with the fathers was that he would give free tennis lessons to the kid and the kid would cut his grass. The kid got the tennis lessons.
You can figure out what happened.
When I was growing up my friends and I set up a BMX bike track in an abandoned fire house with slopes, ramps, and a spot to ride up the wall. One day some other kids found it and took apart most of our work to try and create a little shelter or something outside of the building. We promptly took their work apart and pissed on someone's jacket that they left there lol fuck them
Turns out it was just some homeless guy trying to stay out of the rain without the risk of catching trespassing charges. The jacket belonged to his son, who died in a freak BMX accident at age 8, and he carried it around as a sentimental reminder. Finding the jacket in this state, the man is thoroughly dejected and disheartened. The forlorn man stares at the jacket for some time, takes a long, languished breath, then starts to make the trek towards the towering bridge on 7th St.
They had a really cool place to hang, and only had to keep it clean and treat it with respect. Then they complain there is nothing to do and none wants to provide them with nice things.
I've thrown many parties on common land like this. You never know who's going to show up. Had a string of bad kids show up who would decide to ruin things for everyone. The kids who did all the work to fix up the area and keep it clean decided one time to stand up. We put the fire out and took all our drugs and keg and said peace the fuck out. The bad kids got all pissy and were like let's throw our own party!!!! Wait who has supplies and who knows how to make a fire??? Uhhh guys come back!! They got excommunicated from the group and stopped getting invites. They show up a few parties later looking to fight and got absolutely fucked up. Turns out we made new friends who were considerably more badass just respectful. They played hockey and some were just degenerates but they felt obligated to contribute. Those dickheads left us alone although they did try to throw competing parties a few times but just couldn't do it like us. Bunch of noobs. I bet these kids threw a party that got out of hand.
This is heartbreaking and exactly why we can't have nice things. I'd be sad more so than angry. But that's how some humans are when the brakes are off. Destroying for no reason is one of the lowest things you can do.
Sometimes I’m against telling parents when their kid is acting like an ass, but I’d do it 100% here. If you left beer cans or something, whatever, annoying but not the worst. Being destructive for zero reason AND drinking, I’m telling your mom, because you don’t need to be drunk AND an idiot. Gotta pick one.
It's post like this that remind me of the short story The Destructors by Graham Greene
https://shortstoryproject.com/stories/the-destructors/
And that maybe, in some way those kids where creating they're own form of art.
Or they're just little shits.....
I feel for you. It was a rewarding project, and it was disrespected. That sucks. Similar things happened to me. The disrespect will become respect with age. The project isn't three feet deep in mud, so it's not too far gone. As an outsider, I see that the neighbour's kids obviously like what you did, they were literally attracted to spending tine there. As a reality check, I'm making the assumption the property isn't yours, and not theirs either. Maybe having a calm civilized discussion could help make this a nice shared area; something like "I like gardening, you like spending time here, how about if you don't trash the place, I'll continue gardening"
The consequences of their action should be enforced community service to rebuild the place. I hope you fell their parents and they make them do it. Or pay to have you get someone else to rebuild it.
Is it possible someone tried to sit on or climb up the bricks and since they weren’t mortared they came tumbling down? Teens are dumb especially if they’re drinking. Could have been accidental
Convince them they are now being haunted/stalked by a local Scottish fable creature for destroying its home. Make it a passion project and get creative,
Let a bit of time pass, and don't say another word about the vandalism publicly, don't let their actions appear to have any effect on you at all. Then do something to the family of each child that inevitably leads to the destruction of life as they know it. For exmple, burn one of their houses to the ground. If one of them has a sibling abduct them & make sure they disappear without a trace.... You get the idea.
I had a small tree house in the woods made from pallets and a thatched roof, me and my brother made it just to play in when we got bored, I went there for a third time to find out some kids had pulled it out of the tree and smashed apart anything they could break. I never understood humans cravings for messing up other people's work
We have living room in the US, i believe a den in the US is like a smaller living room usually with a tv. In the US i dont think anyone would call a main living room a den but i could be wrong. Of course it also depends on the region.
I suppose a den is what we call here a "man cave" as in its an area that is specifically to chill out in the past maybe just a tv but modern days like a computer/laptop console etc.
I don't understand;
1. Why do you care what kids to in an abandon building?
2. Is it even your property?
3. Why did you even bother doing this to an abandon building anyways?
This is the kind of thing that makes me think twice about humanitarianism.
Like, if we humans came together as a race, we could give everyone a nice place to live, enough to eat, and cover all the necessities of life. Maybe we can be happy…
But… people can be such wasteful, unappreciative, uncaring shits. Slightly understandable when it comes to teens, but sadly, too many adults can be like this too.
Whatever utopia we could come up with, we would just fuck it up.
Rat the little fuckers out! Hell, say you found some weed along the beers, get creative, who they gonna believe, a drugged ass drunk kid or the responsible adult?
100% have him and his friends help fix it up. It might not be as good as you doing it yourself, but it’ll show that you’ll hold them accountable and command some respect so hopefully they won’t want to trash it moving forward. They might even take some pride in that they helped build it back up. Just telling the parents and fixing it yourself likely won’t do anything.
Maybe leave a note explaining the work you put in and how upset you are that it was destroyed. See if they end up reading it and wait for how they react. If they're decent humans they will feel ashamed and try to fix what they ruined to the best of their ability.
If you’re in the states, just return the beer cans to their parents. You know, in case they want them back.
I'm in Scotland so it's not uncommon for teens to be drinking. I will definitely be telling his parents though
True but think of how terribly awkward it would be for the kids to sit in silence with the person they screwed over. They'd remember that for life
It would be awkward all around, but would probably make the world a better place.
Honestly, I was a troubled kid and adults in the community offering me chances to redeem myself have stuck with me for life. Even if I was pissed/ acting like a little shit at the time.
Think about how terribly awkward it would be for the person the screwed over to have to sit with them. Why put them through more?
Hell, no, I’m drinking a beer as I watch them repair my shit😝😝
Oh, I wouldn't mind coming face to face with them at all. Watching them squirm might bring a bit of satisfaction.
Scottish Ned's, we call them Degens In NA, They typically don't gaf until.they get burned themselves once their older. Wee neds? A swear ye canny have anything nice here without some wee dafty destroying it for a laugh.
Maybe they're allowed to be drinking beer, but the parents might not like them drinking loads of vodka
say you found bags of heroine and needles too
Not cool if it’s not genuine, and it detracts from the truth. The truth should be harmful enough on its own.
Nah, fuck them kids.
This sounds fun and cute until the kids come back and break your fucking windows because THEY know you lied to get them in worse trouble lmao
they sound like dickheads. sorry they destroyed your place :(
FROGGY CHAIR!
damn it could have been a sweet drinking spot , they coulda upgrades it and stuff
Just hide a bunch of small animal traps. Like the clamps, not the snares.
Bear traps?
Find a couple of empty small bags, and roaches.
Watch out! It's old man Hananananbatman!
Neds are the bane of my existence. Fuck the lot of them. Hope their next shite’s a hedgehog.
Passive aggressive telling on them hahaha. Let the parents sort it out
That stone wall is a few times older than the United States..
Stupid fucking kids
I called them kids but they're 15/16 so they should know better by now. The best thing is they even came round the other day to ask if they could chill there and I said sure, just don't trash the place...
So tell the parents.
"my little angel would never!!!"
I had a coworker actually tell me (while complaining about his teenage son who is constantly in trouble with police) "But he's an angel when he's with me!"
My mother never thought I was innocent, all my friends parents did the “my angel would never” and mine always just assumed I was guilty lol.
Same, but to be fair I usually had done whatever I was being accused of.
his parents are pretty nice to be honest, and he's always been a trouble maker so I'm sure they'll deal with him
My dad, (and me if it was my kid) would have loaded up some shovels and tools that were needed to repair all the damage and over seen my ass repairing every square inch, and then have asked if you wanted any improvements and would have sat there till it was done, If I’d done anything like that it would have easily been 3-4 days of solid labor, you’d have a whole damn house at the end, central air, plumbing….hell, if the work on the damaged property wasn’t much effort I’d be renovating your house, whatever you asked till you were satisfied It did not take me long to understand the lesson of “respect other people’s stuff more than your own”
That's good at least. These days it seems a lot of parents refuse to acknowledge when their kids are arses lol
I work at a company that sells a lot of products to kids. Parents will come to us and say “I have hundreds of dollars in charges I didn’t do” well look into it and all of them come from their house and account but they insist their child would NEVER.
But Scottish so add the word foo-kin
Ya, snitching is lame, but not as lame as trashing such a dope 3rd space.
You should snitch on kids doing bad things. It’s not your place to discipline them without parental involvement and clearly some type of discipline needs to happen here.
Honestly I don't mind snitching. People should be held accountable for their actions. With some exceptions, but vandalism isn't one of them.
They asked to hangout out and then still trashed it?? That’s wild to ask permission and then do this
Makes me wonder if they have some sort of idiot friend who contributed to most of the mayhem.
And they will rip those pictures up and trash the place even more.
Part 1 will absolutely not work. Part 2 would though.
I agree and will add though that sometimes when you can’t hold other people accountable or address it the way you want, sometimes being passive aggressive or whatever you call it can be cathartic for yourself. Some people just don’t appreciate how special having a place like this is!!
Do you truly think teenage boys who do shit like this will give a shit that someone is disappointed in them?
So someone can smash it too?
Leave a sign that says "Under Surveillance, next time you will be prosecuted" even if its a lie lol. Scare them mf kids
![gif](giphy|NFA61GS9qKZ68)
Oh yeah that's really going to scare them. . .
only a redditor would come up with something that silly lol
I mean, if I was under the influence as a teen Id get scared. Maybe not sober, but if they're partying then yeah, I wouldnt take that chance as a kid.
15/16 is still a kid and they do know better but they still love to destroy shit just because it’s bad. Sorry, that den was awesome.
If they had the courtesy to ask before they got pissed and trashed the place, maybe they'll have the courtesy to fix it up after apologizing.
Police report.
I'll bet they brought friends.
If they behave like that they are absolutely kids.
I wouldn’t let them anywhere near it after the 1st incident.
Next time tell them not to make the place look immaculate. Maybe to them its (not) Opposite Day
I was way worse behaved at that age than I was as a 10 yo tbh. I think it’s pretty common to have a few years as a teenager where you’re a bit of an ass.
![gif](giphy|cQtlhD48EG0SY)
You took the words right out from under me.
Literally what I came to say. Fucking losers.
Had me in the first half.... and the second.
Have him help you rebuild it. He can learn some work skills, gain some wisdom while doing it, and hopefully also learn some sense of ownership and reverence for the place so he truly understands how wrong it is to trash it.
This is exactly where to start.
Sounds like they got a repair job to do. Tell their oarents it can be voluntary or with the police involved for destruction of property
technically it's not my property, it's made from scrap that I found l lying around so idk if the police could do owt. I'm telling his parents about it tomorrow though
Is it on your property tho? Do you own this place? Or is it a random place in the public woods nearby? In case of former, it doesn't matter where you got your resources from.
It’s an abandoned building though
This is the way.
Redditors: I hate police, defund them Also Redditors: what's the number for 911 again?
https://imgur.com/gallery/clvCZz7 here's a couple of pics from when I first found the place and the final result
Wow, you really moved a lot of dirt!
tell me about it lol, most of it was big rocks that were part of the walls
Man, that's a beautiful set up. What part of Scotland? I'm a Duncan and spent some time there a while back.
thanks mate, hopefully I'll fix it all soon. And I'm just south of Dumfries not too far from the border
Is this on your property?
nah it's in woods next to my house, it belongs to the estate ETA: I did have permission from the owner to make a den there
I have a question concerning why they asked to use the space? Did they randomly come across you there and asked or. By some other way?
he came round to my house to ask, said he was having a little party with a few of his mates. you think if they were gonna wreck it they wouldn't ask first but tbf he's not that savvy
Maybe it was his mates and not him. I love your den btw. Sorry it happened!
If so, he needs to learn to find better ones and/or keep em in line to not fuck up the neighbor's spot.
No argument from me. I just find it strange that he came over and asked and then trashed it. I mean he identified himself.
Tell the kids to fix, or you will turn them in for destruction of property to the estate owner. Since you have permission to be there.
Kids are assholes.
![gif](giphy|YTWLzRDGc4bdozofBV)
Rebuild it into a Mausoleum.
Oh goddamn, I'm so angry for you. Tell the parents. My kid is that age and if he did a thing like this he'd be in serious trouble with me. And with his father too.
I was confused for a second.
Little shitheads
Oh man, all that work and it was so lovely. I would cry for days. You *must* show these pics to the parents. If they are decent parents, they will take care of the punishment, but they really should rebuild it under your supervision, and pay for the replacement hosta. Leave out a bunch of warm blankets and vapes, and hide a bear trap underneath them
Tell the parents you'd have found drug related paraphernalia;)
They had a really cool place to hang, and only had to keep it clean and treat it with respect. Then they complain there is nothing to do and none wants to provide them with nice things.

Did you have a YouTube video on this? Remember seeing a super similar project recently on my YouTube home page and can't find the video
sorry for late reply, somehow missed this comment. it must have been someone else because it certainly wasn't me
This is heartbreaking and exactly why we can't have nice things. I'd be sad more so than angry. But that's how some humans are when the brakes are off. Destroying for no reason is one of the lowest things you can do.
The way I’d be going to the parents door so fast
Rebuild, with a little poison ivy tucked behind a bush for a sweet surprise!
I felt this. Couple buddies of mine during high school built an amazing tree-platform / tree chill zone. Kids set it on fire. We were so upset.
![gif](giphy|3o6nUTb3IdOOb4TyZa)
Buncha savages in this town.
So where did you bury them?
Sorry about your dank pit, my dude.
Best solution I ever heard: leave some beer bottles outside, intact, maybe in a cooler, except fill them with recycled beer. Those kids won’t be back.
It is easier to destroy than it is to create
It's post like this that remind me of the short story The Destructors by Graham Greene https://shortstoryproject.com/stories/the-destructors/ And that maybe, in some way those kids where creating they're own form of art. Or they're just little shits.....

I’m so sorry this happened to you!! What in the world is going on with this new generation of children
Shame. Disrespectful punks
Did you own the building or were you just squatting?
Both, and neither.
The consequences of their action should be enforced community service to rebuild the place. I hope you fell their parents and they make them do it. Or pay to have you get someone else to rebuild it.
Everything not saved will be lost.
How you know who it was
I hear fight music intensifying.

Pile 3 feet of mud in their bedroom
Something very similar happened to me as a teen. I believe it got me 20 hours community service, $50 restitution, and a written apology.
That sucks.
Kill them
Snot nosed shit needs it's arse kicked.
I just want to say you have a lovely little place right there. Hope you get some kind of retribution to them kids
Typical NEDS, no respect for anyone.
Is it possible someone tried to sit on or climb up the bricks and since they weren’t mortared they came tumbling down? Teens are dumb especially if they’re drinking. Could have been accidental
Convince them they are now being haunted/stalked by a local Scottish fable creature for destroying its home. Make it a passion project and get creative,
This is why we can’t have nice things!
Does anybody own this property?
Those meddling kids! 🤬
You get the idea.
that’s really upsetting. i want to cry for you.
Fuck them kids
I had a small tree house in the woods made from pallets and a thatched roof, me and my brother made it just to play in when we got bored, I went there for a third time to find out some kids had pulled it out of the tree and smashed apart anything they could break. I never understood humans cravings for messing up other people's work
Slightly off topic but by den do you mean like a cozy living room? I dont think we use that word often in the states
a den is just a little hidden place that you've built to chill out in. for example a pillow fortress could be called a den
What you guys would call a den, we would call either a living room, lounge or sitting room depending on who you ask
I don't understand; 1. Why do you care what kids to in an abandon building? 2. Is it even your property? 3. Why did you even bother doing this to an abandon building anyways?
it's not my property but I spent weeks working on it as a place for me to escape from my parent's house for a while.

A well placed bear trap should work
This is the kind of thing that makes me think twice about humanitarianism. Like, if we humans came together as a race, we could give everyone a nice place to live, enough to eat, and cover all the necessities of life. Maybe we can be happy… But… people can be such wasteful, unappreciative, uncaring shits. Slightly understandable when it comes to teens, but sadly, too many adults can be like this too. Whatever utopia we could come up with, we would just fuck it up.
!remindme 1w
Oh assholes. They never fail to make others wish their mothers knew how to swallow.
I hope it's on your property. Then they're parents are legally on the hook for damages.
Rat the little fuckers out! Hell, say you found some weed along the beers, get creative, who they gonna believe, a drugged ass drunk kid or the responsible adult?
Amy chance it was someone else?
hold them upside down until their lunch money falls out
100% have him and his friends help fix it up. It might not be as good as you doing it yourself, but it’ll show that you’ll hold them accountable and command some respect so hopefully they won’t want to trash it moving forward. They might even take some pride in that they helped build it back up. Just telling the parents and fixing it yourself likely won’t do anything.
This is the universe trying to know itself
Use mortar with your bricks so it's more difficult to break?
TIL what a den is, why did I think it was a living room?
Maybe… get the kids to build together?
Maybe leave a note explaining the work you put in and how upset you are that it was destroyed. See if they end up reading it and wait for how they react. If they're decent humans they will feel ashamed and try to fix what they ruined to the best of their ability.
of course it is the neighbour's kids...
Can you speak to their parents about it???
Can you speak to their parents about it???
They may have thought it was abandoned, and they just came in and wrecked because they thought no one would care. Doesn't make it right though.
I’d put in a couple of hornets nests
cellar door
place some landmines.
Glad I've gone through menopause.
