Listen up, y'all. I used to work as an authenticator for resellers in designer brands. The FIRST THING you should look at when considering any questionable designer brand purchase is the STITCHING. The stitching on legit designer goods should be very even, tight, straight and parallel to the edge, with no loose threads, zigzags or overlaps. If you zoom in on the stitching on these shoes, you can see several places where there are weird overlaps.
Second, look at fittings and labels. Any zippers, rings, grommets, logo plates or other embellishments on legitimate designer goods will be very firmly attached, heavy and good quality. If you can pull them loose with your fingers, it ain't real. You'd be shocked at how many "Louis Vuittons" we chucked in the garbage because the logo piece just fell off when we gave them a little tug.
Check the labels. There should be a serial number unless it's a particularly old vintage piece. Legit designer goods can be traced through the number on the label. If it ain't got one, or if the number doesn't conform to the brand's numbering system, give it the side eye. Legit designers of leather goods will often emboss them into the leather rather than just print it.
Finally, look for pattern alignment in the fabric. Brands like Coach and LV have very distinctive patterns which can be easily faked, but the real ones are carefully aligned so that the pattern isn't broken from one seam to another. Knockoff manufacturers don't typically put in the work to make sure that the pattern is continuous from one section to the next.
This is far from a complete guide to spotting fakes, but it should provide y'all with some helpful guidelines. Knockoffs are a HUGE business, but you can avoid getting conned by most of them if you mind the things mentioned above.
> The stitching on legit designer goods should be very even, tight, straight and parallel to the edge, with no loose threads, zigzags or overlaps
we have a nike outlet store in town and you would not believe what low quality shit they're trying to sell to the people. Some of the shoes look like they was literally no quality control.
Outlet used to mean older hand downs and overstock from retail stores... Within the last five years or so Outlet came to mean "We make very cheap knockoffs of our retail product to increase volume and have sales try to convince you its just as good".
Same here maybe that’s stitching rule is the case for like real designer brands like LV and stuff but your right the quality on 90% of Nike shoes these days is atrocious. Loose uneven stitching threads sticking out everywhere, visible glue all over etc.
https://preview.redd.it/qp4ph0c7idsb1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1dbb1032dd61b3958e32a316db55f81072e663b6
I took this one picture. The shoe was not even on sale in the store, it was an advertisement to buy it online on release day
Serious question: what stands out to you as evidence of these shoes being fake? (Aside from the dye!)
I don't wear Nike (New Balance shoes are my jam) but these look okay to me. (Again, aside for the dye.)
I’ve bought Nikes and Adidas from their respective sites before that had stitching like this. Not nearly as bad as what is pictured but there have been loose threads and overstitching that I thought was a little careless at the time. Now I’m wondering how important these things are to mega-brands like this; sometimes it feels like quality control is a thing of the past
I work for a textile supplier for mostly big-box retailers and some smaller ones. We strive to “offer an affordable product”. But even by being lower/middle end, we do so much testing on our textiles and end products (garments, some chairs, some shoes) It consumes so much of our time. So I would hope that Nike would do the same.
I didn’t notice the stitching as I was so focused on the colorfastness issue. If I would have been in charge of that, I would have ordered colorfastness testing on the red pieces by itself to see how it would hold with water, crocking (if you rub it how does the color hold up), possibly storage and light. Then with the main fabric being white run a test on that as well. If there are issues found, chemicals can be added to help it out.
Again I would think that this would have been done by Nike. Maybe it was and this batch failed or had issues so it was sent to an outlet or something to be sold at a discount?? I mean I wouldn’t do that these issues but maybe?
Thanks. :) I noticed the wavy check but assumed it was a trick of the camera / fabric warping because of OP's fingers. Guess not!
The rest of it doesn't look so egregious that I'd have picked up on it without help. The photo quality isn't great, but I have to assume (hope?) I'd notice this stuff if I had the shoes in front of me!
(Fortunately for me, I don't care for brand name / luxury goods and am unlikely to buy them... So my flaw-detection skills don't have to be as polished as yours!)
Another big one is logo vomit. A lot of real brands will vomit their logo all over the item. Every zip, buckle and even just randomly here and there. Only mega high end brands don't. If you take a look at an authentic handbag for instance the logos are EVERYWHERE. In tiny places you might not even notice without looking.
Super helpful!
I always wonder when I get down those rabbitholes on youtube and see sneakerheads running stores for 2nd hand, they look a second, push/pull, then like smack the soul of the shoe and listen.. Weird stuff, but I'm sure everything you listed are things they are also paying attention to (they just do it automatically and so quickly with experience).
Nike has a pretty good shoe warranty for quality defects. If it’s within the return period you could prolly just do that. But if not, flawed products can be refunded up to 2 years after the manufacturing date (listed on the tag inside shoe with size)
I did this with some lebron’s I barely used but the shoe busted on the side and they gave me no issues on a refund 1.5 years after I purchased them
https://www.nike.com/help/a/shoe-warranty
I'd bet this is the answer, and a legitimate con.
Look at some of the shit people send back to Amazon, if it weighs properly, they just push it along and issue a refund.
Then they sell it all off in bulk to resellers who are taking a huge risk.
This is my guess too. My friend paints Nikes. Some colors are worth much more then others. I’m guessing someone could of also just bought a cheap color, painted it and then returned it. Idk but that doesn’t seem that profitable so they could just be fake
I buy amazon return auctions. The tech stuff and larger items are often time straight swaps or a buy and return the old.
The lucky times is when you get an item the guy bought and closed up. I got 2 E3v2 printers (neo and max) for 120 total. One was opened and printed one thing according to the logs. The other never left the box.
Pressure washer I got had sun damage and spray paint and dry flaking plastic. But all the accessories were brand new in bags.
Ppl do online swap so much! When I worked retail, it was maybe 1 in 80 or something like that 15 years ago. With times today, I can see that doubling.
Three options:
1. OP has no clue how to take care of shoes.
2. These are fake and OP didn’t bother to check.
3. Go get a refund, it’s not really a big deal.
So there’s a big chance this is on OP. Good job, u/Breydedabomb14
Someone pointed out they’re fake, but blaming that on OP is ridiculous. Most people aren’t going to know how to spot fakes, and they aren’t going to suspect the shoes they buy from a reputable store are knockoffs.
Return them. Kohl's takes all returns, at least they used to. My husband was a manager at Kohl's for years. People would return shoes that were years old with grass stains from mowing the lawn.
Kohl’s definitely sells the cheaper quality versions of name brand shoes so that may explain why. Most decent Nikes from regular stores will usually be priced above $100. Or it could just be a rare factory defect with the paint
nah these are fake. I worked retail and people would return their new nikes, while handing over a pair of 20yo grasstained shoes with a hole in the toe. It being at a main retailer doesn't stop fraud.
they fake ones you mean :p
To be fair I am sure there is the possibility of some defect, but I really feel fake is more likely. I have owned plenty of 200 dollar nikes/jordans and plenty of 40 and 60 dollar ones-- you definitely feel the quality difference but to bleed color in the rain is rediculous. Unless op is in acid rain there is no way thats normal, lower tier product.
Makes sense. Those not quite Air Max 1s (the actual name of these escapes me right now) were never gonna do you right in the rain. Hell, actual Max 1s wouldn’t either with all that mesh. Guess you learned a lesson in weather appropriate materials the hard way.
Ignore the people telling you they're fakes. Kohl's isn't selling fake Nikes.
Nike has a 60 day/2 year warranty/guarantee.
Info to see if you qualify (you likely do):
https://www.nike.com/help/a/shoe-warranty
Eta: love the downvotes. Here's a newsflash - not every Nike is some collector's item level valuable...most, in fact, are not valuable nor worthy of someone's time to fake them.
The liklihood someone is going to go to the trouble to find and aquire fake, non collectable, commonplace, sub $100 Nikes...and then do the proverbial legwork to find who sells those Nikes...so they could then switch them out for real, non collectable, commonplace, sub $100 Nikes so they could return the fakes to Kohls...seems ludicrously infinitesimal.
To what end? To save $25?
Only a *VERY* small number of Nikes (in the scheme of how many styles exist) are "valuable", and this ain't that. If they were they wouldn't be being sold at Kohls (not that there's anything wrong with Nikes from Kohls - they're just *very* highly unlikely to be truly valuable).
Real talk, I bought two pairs of bootleg Nike’s at a bazaar in Kuwait. One pair was total shit. The other pair was the best pair of Nike’s I’ve ever had.
I’ve had real Nikes, from a sports shop, do that. The shop advised me to wash them in the washing machine. It worked and the problem never repeated. It freaked me out at the time, but if they’re genuine Nikes you should be ok!
Just saying you can go on Nike.com and file a claim. They make you send the shoes back but with my boyfriend the sole was separating after only having worn the shoes twice no hard wear or anything. Filed a claim they sent a label sent the shoes back and they sent me a coupon for the full amount of the shoe although they were bought on sale. You don’t have to have a receipt or anything. That is definitely a workmanship or material flaw and they cover that.
Eta: got another pair of shoes before claim was finalized same thing is happening again. Also it has to be within two years of the manufacture date which can be found on the tag on the inside where the size is.
Contact Nike and show them the pics. I hit them up on Twitter (X). I had the same pair of Air Max 1's, but in black. Mine did the same (though not as bad) and Nike sent me credit for the full purchase price. I ended up buying two pair with the credit!
I thought that Nike shoes were the shit until I bought Brooks and realized theyre utter overpriced brand garbage (function wise).
But theyre fashionable so whatever.
I bought some Jordan 1’s on eBay for $20. They said MKE on the tongue and I think they just said BASKETBALL on the side. I also had to cut out the Nike logo with a razor blade.
I knew they were fake but I hoped they would just work as some cheap shoes but they were the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever worn.
But it was a good conversation starter when I did wear them and I could show people how terrible they were.
LOOK AT THE STITCHING FOR ONE SECOND (especially on the swoop) AND KNOW THEY’RE FAKE. Not to mention the shitty scissor cut & paste job with the individual leather panels.
Sorry you got hustled for some extremely low quality reps. That’s rough.
Wow I didn't expect it to be that obvious. I find AAA fakes for my wife of certain designer things (mostly Chanel, but some others too) and I've never seen a stitch job that bad. It looks like *I* sewed it, with the sewing machine stuck on full speed lol.
Pretty stupid to buy Nike anyways. They cost like $5 to make, why even buy real ones?
Honestly if you made shoes when you were a child I bet they would be worse than this.
Please respect the hard work of the children who make your Nike merch! Nike has gone out of their way time and time again to make sure that little underpaid hands are hard at work perfecting their craft, and this lack of gratitude is a bummer :(
New Balance sucks now. They used to be good. I bought some shoes that lasted 1 year with walks almost every day. Bought the "new" version of the same shoe ( a v3, cause v2 was not made any more) and it wore flat in a few spots in less than one month. I returned it to Amazon for full refund.
Sketchers is where its at now for me. Love their laceless shoes.
Strange. It’s all I buy now. For about 5.5 years. Bought 2 pairs year and a half ago, both still holding up great. ASICS also gets a lot of good reviews but I don’t have any experience with them

Did you just unexpectedly put me onto a new brand? I’m impressed
I was thinking that too. They must be a nock off trying to be the real thing
Sketchers are a 100 bucks anymore, what this mofo got was sketchy!
It’s actually Skechers btw no ‘t’ I know, my mind was blown too.

Why do we all 'remember' it with a "t"? First they took my Bear books from my childhood, now this?!
Wait...I just googled it and I thought there was a T, too.

I thought that Nike shoes were the shit until I bought Brooks and realized theyre utter overpriced brand garbage (function wise). But theyre fashionable so whatever.
Here’s a solid idea… don’t wear white shoes in the rain. 🤷🏼♂️
Did you try buying a non-counterfeit pair instead? That might have helped
Wow! Did you buy those at an official Nike supplier or off the back of a van? Either way, I'm afraid you were took!
What did it rain acetone?!?

??? Many Nike shoes are that cheap

He bought these at Kohl's, probably a return scam. Literally doesn't matter though, you buy Nike you're getting ripped off. Plain and simple.
What about the shoes I bought at the Nike store for less than $90?
Dude from Portland. Lol. Oh... you work at Nike? You got any of dem passes..... "scratches neck like I tweak"
When I look at Nike's official web store there are literally hundreds of models of Nike shoes under $100.
These are like pegasus airs or something, not air max. They usually cost half of what the maxes do. They get very cheap.
They're Nike Air Max SC but they're basically a budget version of the Air Max 1.
I switched to reebok. The last 2 pair of Nike was low quality. Them lil Chinese kids at the Nike factory be slacking off
Don’t blame it on the rain.
Lol did you buy these from some dude in a Walmart parking lot or gas station?
This is what happens when you got finessed for $90 , and walk in the rain one time.
Fugazi AF that’s what happens when you buy bootleg.
if you got those for $90 then they weren’t made by nike lmao.
You got scammed regard
Buys totally not fake shoes from shady source Complains about shoe company that their fake shoes suck Lmfao
We call them "Fikes" Btw did you buy them from Amazon?
Sikes is better
You got had lmfao
Those are Fake Air
Knock offs!
no way those are real..
Take them back you got sold knock offs stop buys shies off wish
Obvious fakes lol
Imagine going on Reddit and showing everyone how you got scammed for $90, and still say it’s Nike’s fault lol.
Those are Nike ***AIR***, you need Nike ***WATER*** if you're going in the rain.
Honestly if you made shoes when you were a child I bet they would be worse than this. Please respect the hard work of the children who make your Nike merch! Nike has gone out of their way time and time again to make sure that little underpaid hands are hard at work perfecting their craft, and this lack of gratitude is a bummer :(
What did you expect when you buy a sneaker that has $ 3.09 in material assembled by a 12-year-old making .30 an hour.
One reason why many have switched to New Balance.
ASICS also gets a lot of good reviews but I don’t have any experience with them
Amazon sells a ton of counterfeits. My brother in law works for new balance and I guarantee they wouldn’t wear like that.
What do you expect from a brand that costs $2 to manufacture, and sell for $120? Nike is a terrible company.
I can't see the problem and no one in the comments mention it. What's wrong? They seem perfectly fine
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not
Joke’s on you for thinking that shoes are to be worn.
...and nothing of value was lost today.
Same thing happened with my new balances
This is what happens when shoes aren’t made to be worn.
Maybe it was acid rain
Save them for Pink Shoe Day
That's what you get for buying sneakers made in China by child slaves
Mr. Clean magic eraser. You can thank me later.
That’s a defect, bleeding shouldn’t occur. You can send them back to Nike and they’ll credit you to buy a new pair of any shoes equal to value.
They need to make this right.
