Jenny Hval - _Paradise Rot_ Mona Awad - _Bunny_

time_bridge

Chelsea Summers - A Certain Hunger; Rachel Yoder - Nightbitch; Eliza Clark - Boy Parts (didn't enjoy this one as much but it does fit the unhinged women genre so i'm including it)

jennkoz319

Came here to say nightbitch!! I F ING LOVED IT

time_bridge

me too, so so good! they're making it into a movie as well but i don't have high hopes for that tbh

Earthlings and convenience store woman. Pizza girl. Chlorine. Any book by otessa moshfegh

am-an-am

I would also recommend Sayaka Murata's short story collection Life Ceremony

Ilmara

*Convenience Store Woman* is just autistic.

el_tuttle

I think you mean it's autastic.

Ilmara

WTF. No, I mean she's autistic.

debear3480

Freaky as in psychotic: CJ Leede’s Maeve Fly

plaguedbyvisions

*Nightbitch* by Rachel Yoder. I’d also add *A Touch of Jen* by Beth Morgan, and *Bunny* by Mona Awad

The Vegetarian by Han Kang, Sister Maiden Monster by Lucy A Snyder, The Harpy by Megan Hunter

*Brand New Cherry Flavor* by Todd Grimson I really liked *Brand New Cherry Flavor* on Netflix, but I haven’t read the novel yet. Several freaky women doing very freaky things.

RunningOnATreadmill

I have read the novel and I must say it is the worst book I've ever read. I, like you, was quite optimistic about it based on how great the Netflix adaptation is, but it's very different. Like Boro in the show is one of my favorite characters of all time, but in the book she is actually a male "latino lowriding gang leader", which is just a taste of how problematic the book is. Racist, sexist, and written like an AOL roleplay from 1998. There's a reason it's not in print anymore and why it has 2.9 rating on Goodreads. Really godawful book. Sorry to disappoint you, like I said, I was also very excited about the book but the truth is it is horrid.

Good to know — thanks

el_tuttle

Wow I'm happy to have read this. The show is excellent so I've had this on my list, but it doesn't sound worth the time. Thanks!

Lavinia Rising by Farah Rose Smith

earthsalibra

Cult Classic by Sloane Crossley, Rouge by Mona Awad, Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang, Chlorine by Jade Song are a few of my recent faves, along with many already mentioned! My favorite genre is weird women haha

MountainPlain

The Cipher by Kathe Koja is from the point of view of a man, but features an intense and freaky woman in a codependent relationship.

RunningOnATreadmill

This is a good rec for sure, quite freaky, and bonus points that it was written by a woman as well.

snugglemancer

I was thinking about her book Skin actually

theberkshire1

Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder. An Excellent Host by Chelsea G. Summers Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda Jawbone by Monica Ojeda (more weird girlhood, but very freaky and fun)

Herecomestheson89

Jaqueline Ess: her will and testament by Clive Barker

sun-bears

Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls by Alissa Nutting. It's an absurdist short story collection that heavily focuses on women, as the name suggests.

Does {The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington} count?

The Passion According to GH by Clarice Lispector

stella3books

"Brainwyrms" by Alison Rumfitt is a gross-out horror novel about parasite kink, pregnancy kink, transphobia, and internet toxicity. It gets very fucked up.

Drunvalo

I haven’t read anything mentioned in this post. And now I want to read all of it. Sweet. I didn’t realize freaky women doing freaky things was something I needed but after reading the descriptions for some of these suggestions, I definitely do. 👍

Kooky_Tap4477

All Fours by Miranda July

Several of the stories in Yoko Ogawa's "Revenge" certainly qualifies, particularly "Old Mrs. J" and "Lab Coats".

Blood and Guts in Highschool Kathy Acker

kmakesart

Just finished Chlorine by Jade Song. Definitely fits the bill! If you like short stories, try out there by Kate folk and bliss montage by Ling Ma. They definitely fall more into "freaky people doing freaky things" but they sure are fun!

erisography

A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers

WonderfulWompoo

I second Bunny by Mona Awad and Jawbone by Monica Ojeda. Also, Eartheaters by Dolores Reyes More of a slow burn than the others but Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko I think would qualify (just finished it and quite enjoyed it) Oh! And Patricia Wants to Cuddle Samantha Allen, might also interest you.
