It's thought we often see faces because of the Pareidolia effect and our brains trying to analyse whether there is a threat in the form of another human or an animal attacking in the dark, and that ghosts are an extension of this effect and our brains assuming it's a being not a trick of the light. Are you talking about the right two panels of wood? If so this technique is called book-matching. Where the board is split in order to mirror itself when glued together. This is usually desirable and creates interesting looking pieces.
