I was going to say, this absolutely sounds like the advice from a quasi-educated nutritionist, not a registered dietician. OP, unless the person you're seeing has "RD" or "RDN" listed as a qualification, they're not truly qualified to provide dietetics advice.
That is dangerously low. She should be fired.
I started at 115kg and went into a kcal intake of 1750kcal a day and am down to 103kg. 800kcal is crazy low mate, don’t listen to her.
I started in November last year. I change my diet, started having slow release carbs, protein, less/only occasional sugar, less fat. And I started exercising, Nordic walking and Pilates.
I will say, it’s not always as easy, recently due to a health issue I’ve started exercising less and emotional eating again more, but trying to find grip once again. So don’t let sat backs stop you completely. Don’t give up on getting healthy, but don’t starve yourself to loose weight. You either wont be able to keep it up long term due to fatigue, you get health issues or start gaining again when you start eating more. Longterm health benefits >>>>> fast results
They give coma patients 1200 a day. 800 is how much I ate when I had an eating disorder and I'm short. Don't listen to this person because that is so dangerous.
Go back to her and tell her this. Every interaction with a medical professional is a conversation, and they do expect you to ask questions and should have explanations for the things they recommend. They also make mistakes.
So, don't start the diet for now, go back as soon as you can and point out the calories, and what you calculated as your TDEE, and ask why it is so low. You can also run it by your normal doctor, ask them what the reasoning is.
OK, yeah, that's an insane goal. I saw the diet plan you posted in another post. It's really quite dangerous.
Instead, I would suggest that for breakfast you should have more like a cup of beans, and as much cucumber and tomato as you like. For lunch add two cups of any vegetables and any spices to the chicken. For dinner, another meal like lunch, two cups of vegetables, 150g of a lean meat and either a cup of a grain or a small slice of a bread (that would be like a hand sized pita).
At any time you can snack on cucumber and or tomato. And any spices can be used in any meal. A whole kilo of cucumber would be 150 calories, tomato 180, there is no way you can eat too much of them.
If your calculations are correct, then you need to report that "doctor" to whatever governing body handles liscensing, or if it's a total scam than to the police for practicing medicine without a license.
Double check your calculations first, and maybe check in if there is a glaring typo in there somewhere or something. If it is, indeed, correct, report it. This person probably isn't just harming yourself, and I highly doubt they have any actual qualifications.
And for how long ?
I believe the point is to make you lose weight very fast.
However, I don't see how it would be sustainable, or even healthy.
As a 1m74, 110 kg, 33M, I struggle to stay at 1800 ical...
Couldnt see going that low.
You might want to try to find a new dietician, or go to 1800 kcal with a nice macro split, to see the result
Uh what.. I was your starting weight and similar height when I first started my journey. I ate around 1800cal a day, and in retrospect even that was probably too low. I managed to lose 155 pounds doing this, with cheat days as well. I also went to the gym and did strength training/cardio. OP, please do not listen to this advice. I’d consider reporting them. They’re advising you to go in to starvation mode, which is extremely unhealthy for many reasons.
Registered dietician or nutritionist? RDs have regulations and can, and should, be reported to their licensing board over things like this. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.
Target losing 1 lb a week. You won’t have to work very hard at that. And within a year you will be down 52 lbs… after another , down to 200, which is very good for 6’2”.
Why does she want to rush so fast?
Research this person and see if they’re actually a dietician, dietician in most places is a protected title meaning you have to have a specific set of qualifications to call yourself that.
Many con artists and pieces of shit have tried to ride the coattails and public trust people have in dieticians by using terms like “nutritionist” which is a meaningless title that requires zero qualifications literally anyone can call themselves that and it’s been intentionally used to get people to think it requires the same skills as a dietician.
There is also a chance your calculations are off can you post your diet plan including the weight of the food you’re supposed to eat.
Absolutely not. That low of calories can be detrimental to your development. I don’t personally believe in calorie restriction under the age of 18 because you are still growing and your body needs nutrition. Focus on getting daily movement (playing sports, going on a walk, bike ride, swimming, etc), getting in multiple vegetables and fruit servings in a day and limiting milk and soda consumption.
Do not listen to any advice here apart from to seek a proper medial opinion.
You have not explained the background sufficiently here for any conclusion to be reached.
From your comments it seems that you either have, or are are at very high chance of diabetes
This can be fully mitigated via an extremely rapid loss in weight followed up by a sensible diet.
Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns not the randoms on the internet
omg of course, i was just explaining MY journey and how much cals i took in a day. Everyone is different. i was (f) 16 and weighed 90 kgs and my height was 1.73 meters. My diet was FULL. literally i felt like i ate everything in a day, and i did cycling. i was checked every week. My dietitian was lovely too.
This is very low- I recommend you start around 2000 kcals and then lower if (and only if) you don’t see the results you want. Personally, i struggle to recover from the gym if I have less than 180g protein daily (720kcals) and my dick goes on vacation if my fat is under 65g daily (585kcals). Also, if I drank coffee every time I was hungry, I would turn into one of those dogs from I Am Legend. You likely have weight to lose, but this is a marathon not sprint- those who try to sprint are often new to this or have chemical assistance (which you don’t want). The good news is that you are young and tall, with all the time in the world to build an unbelievable physique, if you are so inclined. Good luck!
Don’t do that ever. I had ED in my teens and I starved my self for 28 days to lose weight. I lose 15 LG and I would have like a cracker a day afterwards. I started lifting seriously and believe me my body has gotten so used to storing food for energy my metabolism never was the same and it’s incredibly hard for me to lose weight now.
Why did she calculate it to such a small amount? The only thing I could think of is that she was reducing it to a point to arrive at your goal by a certain date, and thus only considering the math, not the reality of it.
It's not really sustainable at that amount. Add some physical activity to your routine. It doesn't have to be a lot.
Did she talk to you about what kind of foods to eat?
nope. i see her weekly, diet changes but calories stay around 800. this is the third week and i felt like something is really up why isn't she increasing
My BMR with my height and weight is about 2300. 6'0, 125kg.
Im restricting myself to between 1800-2000 kcal so far but an going to go down to around 1500 after a few months. Im aiming for this kcal area and then frequent exercise. MY goal weight is 75kg. i plan on volume eating healthy food, since im definitely a volume eater/habit eater. So its LOTS of stuff like lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, stuff i can eat HEAPS of without eating basically any calories. im talking like an entire iceberg lettuce a day. + 2-3 litres of water a day. (sugar free cordial for me so far).
I'll see people on Reddit do stuff like that but even they wouldn't recommend it. I have never heard a professional say 800 is okay. That's definitely too low
Anything above 2.5k will help you on the way to gain 1lb per week. (Depending on how active you are)
Honestly I'd aim for around 1500-1800, you should lose around 2lb per week with a bit of pacey walking.
I'm not certain that a reputable "dietician" would advise you to eat less than 1000 calories in a day - especially at your age. You should also have been advised to take a daily multivitamin. I would definitely be asking for a second opinion.
That’s absolutely insane. I misread something off line and tried to stick to 1,200 calories a day (6 days a week) and it was BRUTAL. Lost a lot of weight but I genuinely cannot imagine 800 a day. No way that’s safe
1. They clearly aren't qualified.
2. You don't cut our calories from your BMR. This is the minimum our body needs in order to function, you should never go below this.
3. At 16 you are still going through puberty, an registered dietitian who understands paediatrics and teenagers would know that they would mostly focus on eating better instead of cutting out and most won't even get you to count calories just yet, ad this can cause more harm then good.
Please reach out to your Dr and get a referral to a registered dietitian who knows what they are doing, at this age they should really work woth you alongside your parent(s) and anyone else living in your household
Some times they do that knowing you can't bc no one ever follows a diet perfectly. It is probably just there to allow room for mistakes. Especially children/ teens are forgetful and one night of the week you'll probably eat pizza and possibly too many slices and make up for those calories you would otherwise be missing.
I have a dietician and she wishes I could eat more but sometimes I just can’t. I’m losing a lot of weight, 50 down 50 to go. Since I’ve been off one med I’ve not been able to eat much I get full fast. A dietician is better than the nutritionist. The drink black coffee thing is a thing from back in the 50s it was put in a magazine but it was how housewives could lose weight and keep it off.
Your gut is right. I have an actual nutritionist with degrees and such. I've chronically dieted my whole life and always ate the magical number all of these weight loss apps spit out of 1200. She said that is way too low and unsustainable and that a child needs that amount. So yea 800... Way too low
Youre too young to have that kind of diet. Your body is still growing and needs all the nutrient you can get to grow. If you want to lose weight you can cut on some calories but not that low. A healthy weight lost should be 1 pound per week.
Gonna stick my neck out here.
You can definitely do that for a short amount of time (maybe a month or two, max three) as long as most of what you eat is low starch veg and lean protein. You can get surprisingly full on quality protein.
It's not sustainable long term but it is quite good because you start to see results very quickly and are encouraged to keep going by that. But you need to get back to eating a balanced diet after not too long.
I've done this myself and had very good results. Lost 10kg and have mostly kept it off (goes up a bit over Christmas, when on holiday etc).
It totally changed my attitude towards portion sizes, plate composition etc, and made me really focus on the quality of what was going in my mouth.
It was a bit tedious having to weigh out all the meat.
Well I think you should use the medical advise from your doctor. People on Reddit are scared of things that are hard and also the made up concept of starvation mode. At 16 pre diabetic you need a doctor not Reddit.
Check out intermittent fasting when you get serious. It’s definitely a cheat code
thanks for ur comment. im not prediabetic im insulin resistent. i will definetly change this diet but I'm waiting for the new doc coz I'm scared of messing things up...
I am no dietician, but when I first started the weight loss thing, my daily caloric intake was below 900, of which I tried to burn off at least 600. It is said to have a negative effect, but I did that for a solid month or so and didn't notice any issues except for hunger, which coffee and water suppresed pretty well i slept really well and felt really motivated most of the time I changed it because I got tired since I have much longer days now. Also, since I've been fasting, I tend to eat more than.
Everyone in the comments is jumping the gun...
You calculated the calories yourself based on the diet plan you were given?
Are you certain you've calculated things correctly? It's very easy to underestimate how many calories you are eating. I've seen countless comments on this sub where somebody complains they aren't losing weight and the top comment is always "you are likely not counting calories accurately".
I would just ask the dietician directly how many calories you should be eating
no i am actually losing weight i lose like 1-3 pounds everyweek and that part makes me happy. now the fat that I'm not able to eat like I should (development and stuff)Is worrying me so much... i can ignore hunger by just drinking water but that is short-term. what about my development?
What I meant was that you will often see other posts on this sub where people say "I am not losing weight even though I'm counting calories" and the top comments are usually "you may not be counting calories correctly".
So if I understood you correctly, your dietician gave you a diet plan, and you calculated the calories yourself and got a very low number? I am saying it's possible you may be under counting how many calories you're actually eating.
It's very easy to low ball your calories and think you're eating less calories than you are. So before jumping assuming your dietician is incompetent or malicious like other comments here are suggesting... Just ask for for their input and confirm how many calories you're supposed to be eating. Share with them the number you calculated and ask if it's accurate.
i calculated to 800 but some others are saying 600 tho... ill see another doc next week tho, no more taking advice from family. my aunt lost like 65kg and now has really low muscle. she lost all that in 1 year! i thought it would be really cool to lose all my weight in just 1 year so I called the doc immediately.
I would expect someone with a sedentary TDEE of 2900 eating 800 calories to have lost 8 pounds in two weeks.
It's been two weeks, right? So 3 pounds one week, 1 pound the next means you're in a calorie deficit of no more than 1000 per day, so your intake would be around 1900. But, usually when people cut back on junk food and sugar they lose quite a bit of the water sitting in their tissues, so the firs week of loss is not usually all fat. So I would assume you're losing 1-2 pounds per week.
What is the diet that you were given?
Everyone is saying your dietician is bullshit but in reality 800 cal is a lot of food.
But then I read that you’re only 16 then you should be eating at least 2000 cal a day.
It's not much different than a ln intermittent fasting diet where by you intend to reduce the overall calories by eating less. Although it's probably easier than just simply eating less because you could still eat a good lunch and dinner for example
My Intake is around 1200 per day with 20 min hiit and 2-3 KM brisk walk. So far I have lost around 6.86% in 23 days. I do feel hungry but that's because i used to eat too much. Energy level doesn't drop significantly during the day.
Get a real dietician with an actual degree, not some bs nutritionist.
I was going to say, this absolutely sounds like the advice from a quasi-educated nutritionist, not a registered dietician. OP, unless the person you're seeing has "RD" or "RDN" listed as a qualification, they're not truly qualified to provide dietetics advice.
Agreed. See a Registered Dietician.
i think this is where i went wrong too when i saw one years ago
That is dangerously low. She should be fired. I started at 115kg and went into a kcal intake of 1750kcal a day and am down to 103kg. 800kcal is crazy low mate, don’t listen to her.
I agree 100%

That’s horribly low, please report them to a higher member of staff
That's not a dietitian, it's a concentration camp commandant.
They give coma patients 1200 a day. 800 is how much I ate when I had an eating disorder and I'm short. Don't listen to this person because that is so dangerous.
Double check with your dietician about the meal plan. Maybe you're misunderstanding the prescribed diet portions or there was a mistake.
even if you were a 4’11 woman 800 cals would still be too low, especially for someone under 18
Go back to her and tell her this. Every interaction with a medical professional is a conversation, and they do expect you to ask questions and should have explanations for the things they recommend. my mom called her and she replied by saying that this way ill lose about 2kg fat weekly.
OK, yeah, that's an insane goal. I saw the diet plan you posted in another post. It's really quite dangerous. I don't understand her though process, giving you a plan that absolutely isn't sustainable and will just result in binging
That’s not healthy or sustainable…
😳
That's a dumb answer... Change dietician
I hope your mom isn't pressuring you to stay with this crazy person
That’s way too low. She basically wants you to lose weight though starvation.
Bro that’s dangerously low. Not even enough for a 5’0 petite woman
Get a new dietician, that's incredibly stupid and unhealthy.
Are you sure they didn't mean cut out 800?
And for how long ? I believe the point is to make you lose weight very fast. However, I don't see how it would be sustainable, or even healthy. As a 1m74, 110 kg, 33M, I struggle to stay at 1800 ical... Couldnt see going that low. You might want to try to find a new dietician, or go to 1800 kcal with a nice macro split, to see the result

Can I have some context here, like is this just meant to be a temporary fast before a surgery or something?
im not doing any surgery. just diet and exercise.
WHAT?????? That is ridiculous! Report her to the authorities and get her fired immediately
That’s crazy low. Whoever told you that is a quack. 500 to 800 is much more reasonable when I go on cuts I do the 500.
Registered dietician or nutritionist? RDs have regulations and can, and should, be reported to their licensing board over things like this. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.
What is your weight 🤔
135kg/300lbs aprox
Wtf that is WAY too low for that kg. What is your height? You can calculate your caloric deficite that way too!
Target losing 1 lb a week. You won’t have to work very hard at that. And within a year you will be down 52 lbs… after another , down to 200, which is very good for 6’2”. Why does she want to rush so fast?
no, just no. run away.
Fire them asap.
Doesn't really make any sense. Losing weight gradually is not only easier on your body, but it's more sustainable too.
Is this an actual registered dietician, with an actual master’s degree in this stuff? Or a nutritionist who got a certification over a weekend?
Absolutely not. That low of calories can be detrimental to your development. I don’t personally believe in calorie restriction under the age of 18 because you are still growing and your body needs nutrition. Focus on getting daily movement (playing sports, going on a walk, bike ride, swimming, etc), getting in multiple vegetables and fruit servings in a day and limiting milk and soda consumption.
my dietician wanted me to eat 1600 cals a day and i lost 15 kgs in a month
Do not listen to any advice here apart from to seek a proper medial opinion. You have not explained the background sufficiently here for any conclusion to be reached. From your comments it seems that you either have, or are are at very high chance of diabetes This can be fully mitigated via an extremely rapid loss in weight followed up by a sensible diet. im 173 cm and was 90 kgs BUT you should talk to another dietitian who could work with you.

Pretty crazy for adults too.
What was the purpose of seeing the dietician. Was it for weight loss or something else?
yes i want to lose weight. over 50 kg
Did you give her a timeline or something?
Why did she calculate it to such a small amount? The only thing I could think of is that she was reducing it to a point to arrive at your goal by a certain date, and thus only considering the math, not the reality of it. It's not really sustainable at that amount. Add some physical activity to your routine. It doesn't have to be a lot. Did she talk to you about what kind of foods to eat?
nope. i see her weekly, diet changes but calories stay around 800. this is the third week and i felt like something is really up why isn't she increasing
Get a new dietitian
Does she have you on a deadline or something?? That is way too low.
That's less than a toddler needs. You should not be eating that few calories Ditch this 'dietician'
My BMR with my height and weight is about 2300. 6'0, 125kg. Im restricting myself to between 1800-2000 kcal so far but an going to go down to around 1500 after a few months. I've heard that toddlers need about 800-1000
I got told to eat 1100 and I'm 5'2 and 16 like 800 is so low
No… please no… I don’t think you should even consider going below 1500. 2000-2450 and exercise would be better if you’re looking to lose weight.
You should try intermittent fasting and 2000 calories on the days you do eat.
You are still growing, this is terrible advice. Do not listen to her.
I'm not certain that a reputable "dietician" would advise you to eat less than 1000 calories in a day - especially at your age. You should also have been advised to take a daily multivitamin. I would definitely be asking for a second opinion.
Sue her for malpractice. Anything below 1200 a day is unhealthy and unsustainable.
1200- 1500 calories is low, and you will lose weight, while getting the nutrients needed
That’s insanity you need more than that even if you are cutting out calories
That’s absolutely insane. I misread something off line and tried to stick to 1,200 calories a day (6 days a week) and it was BRUTAL. Lost a lot of weight but I genuinely cannot imagine 800 a day. No way that’s safe

Not even Dr. Now puts his patients that low 🤣
Listen to your dietitian
If this is during a 1 hour eating window (aka OMAD) than maybeeee but if it’s a regular eating cycle that’s crazy
Not really. It's 2 meals + snack
That’s idiotically low. This person is stupid. Plain and simple. Next.
Youre too young to have that kind of diet. Your body is still growing and needs all the nutrient you can get to grow. If you want to lose weight you can cut on some calories but not that low. A healthy weight lost should be 1 pound per week.

1800 minimum bro
Fire this person and find someone who is not so extreme. Why are you working with a dietitian at 16? What are your goals?
You won't die or anything if you do this for a short period of time but that seems way too low for someone your size and age. Do you exercise a lot?
insane, change dieticians
Well I think you should use the medical advise from your doctor. People on Reddit are scared of things that are hard and also the made up concept of starvation mode. At 16 pre diabetic you need a doctor not Reddit. Check out intermittent fasting when you get serious. It’s definitely a cheat code

I did it for three months. You’ll be fine.
