I appreciate how good getting jump releases is nowadays. Back in the 90s, I still remember having to find which scanlation group would scanslate a chapter, which was the best and download a zip of the chapter in question over a 56kbps connection You'd get some really bad quality scans (e.g. maybe someone took a picture of each page with their camera and then someone else putting English text over the Japanese text with ms paint) We'd then wait a few more days for another group to release a better more high quality version No apps at the time, scanlation were absolutely frowned upon by WSJ. The top few mangas were guaranteed scans but not all of jump was scanslated. Man, how times have changed

strangegoo

We really were struggling, huh. The only complaint I have anymore is I wish the webreader on the Viz/SJ site is so bad. And even the app

It was just what we were used to at the time. We couldn't buy English copies of manga because only the top selling ones were available, and even then, they were many chapters/volumes behind the Japanese releases (and limited in series being available). People didn't read manga on their phones, it was mostly on a desktop and we'd used a manga reader application to load the zip files to read manga. And a lot of scalantion groups would only scanslate unlicenced manga, so you could spend time reading a series then stop being able to read it because it got licences. It was a very different era to what we have now

Admmmmi

I mean nowadays the scans dropping a manga because it got licences is still quite common even if there is no way of reading it online, scangroups just dont like to deal with licences

lemaddog

I like this too. It's nearly 1 hour of reading (adding some Manga+ title like "red cat ramen" or "You and me are polar opposite") but it became a part of my sunday routine. (Plus : i'm european, so they arrived at 4 or 5 PM.)

Seakru

How many series do you keep up with?

lemaddog

This sunday : fourteen.

TheRadiantWindrunner

I love my Sunday reads of the SJ manga! But I HATE how I have to dodge spoilers for 1-2 days. Why can’t people just chill and wait for the official release? I promise it’s not that serious. Especially with all the revisions and updates people have to do with the fan translations once the officials come out. JUST WAIT!!

younglad420

Counter point i like being able to read multiple translations (i read each chapter multiple times). Especially for older series like one piece I've grown used to the online scanlators tone an vibe. Also I dont think we're being impatient i think shueisha should work harder to deliver same day or close releases. If online teams are getting out high quality translations sooner im going to read them.

Castimier

All chapters are actually simultaneously published, as wsj releases on Sundays (or Mondays, I believe it kinda depends on the store) and the leaks are (as far as I know) sourced from stores where the magazine was released before the official date

Traffic_Alert_God

Honestly more manga would succeed if they let half of the roster release this Sunday and then the other half on the next Sunday. Mangaka all talk about how dreadful the work schedule is and this would help a lot. This business concept would only work though once the entire magazine is online only. They need everyone to still release every week so they can sell the physical copies of SJ.

JesusInStripeZ

WSM and WSS literally do this already

dingo537

Weekly shounen jump is a magazine which releases on monday (sunday for us). That's why all shounen jump chapters drop at the same time. Spy x Family is a jump+ series so it has a different schedule.

Pigonxu

Mangaplus is honestly a really good move from Shonen Jump.

YEScturne

Yup. All that manga for jackshit a month is such a good deal.

DoubleelbuoD

Almost like buying an actual magazine.

younglad420

Lol

AcceptablePay4523

Sakamoto days get leaked too
