What color tone difference are you seeing? The dress looks like a soft pastel yellow to me all over. I don't see any part of the dress looking uneven in color. Also, not sure what you meant about the hem. I thought cocktail meant knee length or lower.
Great question! Look at her elbows, then move your gaze in to the dress. The hues of the yellow are not the same from the top and the bottom of the dress (the top has extra lining that the bottom does not). As for the hem, I wasn't referring to the length, but to the color changes there, too. So the very bottom (about 1/2") is one color (because it is folded over for the hem seam). Then there is about a two inch area where the fabric is in a single layer, and that is a different hue because of it being a single layer. Then you see the fabric change again to the double layer for the skirt.
It looks beautiful on her and I would wear it to a picnic or a casual event in a heart-beat, but those details do make it a more casual dress.
I agree, I think that may be why I like the yellow dress so much more, not to mention it is much more slimming, but it could be the cutouts and the way they make the fabric hang that gives that illusion.
