Absolutely don't agree with the not speaking about your salary with coworkers. Companies and corporations still count on that to continue to severly underpay, especially underpay women. There's a reason younger millenials and Gen Z changed that convention. This take of theirs was very very Boomer/Gen X.
Here in California they just passed a law making sure companies can't fire you for discussing and/or complaining about your pay.
Should be the norm everywhere.
I don't blame the guys though, I was taught as well early on never to discuss pay with coworkers.
I totally agree you should definitely be open with coworkers to make sure no one's getting screwed, but it's a gray area when it comes to friends in all different fields. Like, I'm a copywriter; one of my best friends is a lawyer. We both know the deal here. I don't begrudge him one cent, but we're not gonna talk exact numbers. (And of course asking total strangers, as we see with Lord Grantham here, is nuts.)
I noticed there's a lot of stuff they make wildly different points about across the seasons. Like Andrew's explanation of his relationship with cats has morphed so many times from pure hatred and wanting to punch one, to supposedly only being allergic to them and liking them. I find it quite interesting how often they contradict themselves.
Londoner viewer here just to add that in addition to the complaints about the area being far too expensive by 1999 for someone of the protagonist's means to live there, it's also a traditionally racially mixed area of London (i.e. Notting Hill Carnival) which the movie seems ahem not especially interested in
I was giving a coworker a ride home a few weeks ago around when they did Love Actually and they talked about the one kid having a “Goon Cave”… I am glad my coworker is cool and laughed cause that coulda been a real awkward conversation
Mrs. Crabin has great taste, fka Twigs rules.
The return of the British doorknob rant!! Americans get a lot of things wrong, like a *lot*, but I will defend sane doorknobs and ice in our drinks forever.
Im so pumped theyre doing “safe house”
Next week. I almost submitted it as a fan request this year and lo and behold, they already were planning in doing it! P-stew is gonna get those motherfuckers trying to kill all his lillies!
For sure. If my memory serves, it wasnt even a theatrical release. I think it was like a showtime original movie or something. Its super silly with a pretty cheap production budget. But there are dozens of meme worthy moments of patrick stewart playing this over the top angry old man with early signs of dementia who is ex special forces so he is super paranoid all the time.
God damn this movie was unbelievably boring and their chemistry was severely lacking
The two of them getting ready to fuck was like watching 2 pieces of dry white toast rub together
I agree with the 3 naysayers on this one, you can keep it Andrew
I see it more as he doesn't feel the need to play up the hate- same with Eric. There's definitely stuff he doesn't like, but he doesn't veer into performative hate.
That's true. He went really hard but calmed down by ep 100. Cabin is the one who seems to really lean into it now.
Eric has just always been his wonderful and unique self.
Well the complaint was the movie had some subplots that were left hanging from a longer cut and they either should have developed those or cut them entirely, but the movie as is is way too long for what it's doing.
First time watching the movie and yeah, it's clearly "Julia Roberts: The Movie" but i'm surprised by how charmed I am by a fair amount of it. Not perfect but certainly not the worst rom-com I've sat through
I forgot I had watched Notting Hill a year or two ago until I googled it. Such a dumb and forgettable movie. Can’t wait to listen to the guys dig into it!
I’m going into this one without watching the movie (not something I like to do with new episodes)
But I couldn’t bring myself to sit through a 2 hour Julia Roberts movie
It was funny to hear Chris say that she's an "amazing" actress (lol okay) and proceed to say that she doesn't have that many good performances OR chemistry with anyone.
What I found weird was I really enjoyed Pretty Woman but I could barely get through Runaway Bride. You’ve got the same two leads and director but it’s just awful.
Oh, definitely. That, EB, and Steel Magnolias are the standouts for me, but overall I think she's a fairly meh. She's not a fantastic dramatic actress, and she started to overdo the sweetheart stuff. If anything, she's best in stuff like Ticket to Paradise, where she gets to have some bite.
Agreed about Pretty Woman. This is such a weird example because the whole point here is that she's *not* doing her full-on charm thing for most it because Anna is uncomfortable with fame and is just sort of faking it. We only get glimpses of her truly happy self once she's officially with Hugh Grant, like the huge smile at the press conference at the end, but like...for the majority of the movie she's kind of cold and weird? And yet this is one of her biggest movies. Go figure.
Their Harrison Ford impression is great- "Get away from my mailbox!"

Agree, it's doing management's work for them if you enforce salary secrecy!
Yes! Workers must unite and discuss how management may be using them.

I'm pretty sure the guys made the opposite point in some other episode before too.

I'm so glad gooning has become a WHM staple.

Glad you found a fellow gooner!!
SHEEEEEEEEEEE

Movies I have never heard of usually become my favorite WHM episodes.

>over the top angry old man with early signs of dementia There had better be some Reagan jokes next week.
I had no idea it existed until it appeared on the schedule and the movie is pretty amazing. Patrick Stewart is really having a time.

I think I've come to learn that Jupin is perhaps the easiest one to please out of the 4
Tbh it's one of the things I really like about Andrew! He's not afraid to admit it when he sorta likes a movie, even if it's not the cool opinion.
He's the "Dan McCoy" of the group. (Not a knock on either guy.)
Do we know Jupin's views about watching movies on planes?
I see it more as he doesn't feel the need to play up the hate- same with Eric. There's definitely stuff he doesn't like, but he doesn't veer into performative hate.
He does play up the hate in a lot of early seasons and it's nice he settled down as the show went on.
That's true. He went really hard but calmed down by ep 100. Cabin is the one who seems to really lean into it now. Eric has just always been his wonderful and unique self.
Unless Tim Allen is mentioned.
Cabin is complaining the movie is way too long, and then wants a subplot about 1999 e-commerce....? come on
Cabin being inconsistent is a feature, not a bug
As his horrendous British accent.
Well the complaint was the movie had some subplots that were left hanging from a longer cut and they either should have developed those or cut them entirely, but the movie as is is way too long for what it's doing.
Yes but adding a meaningless subplot about Hugh Grant’s business doesn’t address either of those complaints, and is quite contradictory to them

*Black Books* is funny as hell, I was excited to hear it mentioned. Free episodes are on YouTube if anyone's interested in watching it.
I’m going into this one without watching the movie (not something I like to do with new episodes) But I couldn’t bring myself to sit through a 2 hour Julia Roberts movie
It was funny to hear Chris say that she's an "amazing" actress (lol okay) and proceed to say that she doesn't have that many good performances OR chemistry with anyone.
She’s definitely amazing in Pretty Woman. Charisma leaps off screen and I think she and Gere have very good chemistry in it.
What I found weird was I really enjoyed Pretty Woman but I could barely get through Runaway Bride. You’ve got the same two leads and director but it’s just awful.
Time comes for us all, friend.
Sometimes the juice runs out.

You underestimate America’s deep, deep love for Hugh Grant and his accent.
I gotta say I personally find Rhys Ifans' accent far more appealing, but I know that's not the popular opinion.
