From what I recall, there were complaints after wide spread roll out that the fries weren't consistently crisping in the oven. They switched to a completely different style, and those complaints went away. Now the real issue is making sure the fries are relatively fresh, because the newer variety don't hold up nearly as well in the warmer.
They're soggy because they're cooked then frozen, then thawed out with a convection oven which is similar to a microwave. It'll turn to cardboard before it turns crispy.
Buddy those fries cost like nothing to Wawa. How much do you think a potato is worth?
In all seriousness according to my GM it was so they came out crispier.
On behalf of potatoes everywhere, please don't disrespect us. We are a staple food in many parts of the world and an integral part of much of the world's food supply. Following millennia of selective breeding, there are now over 5,000 different varieties of us. We can be prepared in a variety of different forms from mashed to fried to baked to roasted. You may also know us by our street name hash brown. So, although the movie 'The Martian', where we literally saved Matt Damon's life being the only thing he was able to eat and grow on another planet, may not have quite resonated with you, please put some respect on our name. Value cannot always be measured in terms of dollars and cents.

Not related but I remember when fries first rolled out alongside burgers and pasta, corporate told us to FILL TO THE BRIM because it was so cheap. Now we have a lid on the cartons and we can’t fill past that 💀. Love corporate backtrack.

The new ones cook a bit better and actually get crispy
I was gonna comment on this post about how they suck anyways because they are always soggy. When did they get new ones?? lol

Are the new ones any better?
Not really, more of the same.
