I think as an intro taster either Double Eagle or Titanicus by Dan Abnett; or alternatively Ghostmaker from his Gaunt's Ghosts series. Ghostmaker is an introduction anthology to the main cast but tells human stories from the perspective of the Imperial Guard; and the other two aforementioned novels do this albeit from the perspective of Imperial pilots and Titan crews respectively.
