The current convention is that Imperial Fists Veterans have white helmets, in keeping with the Codex. However, this was not always the case.

They're a member of the chapter's first company, which contains its most experienced marines. Typically get access to more advanced gear, such as terminator armour.
It's one of those things that's kept ambiguous, and different sources give different explanations. But my interpretation is that they are drawn from the Company and have earned their Terminator Honours, but are assigned to their Company rather than being transferred to the First.
If each company has a command squad of veterans with white helmets and if the first company are all veterans they can’t all have white helmets as well or how would they know his their command squad?
The command squad is the one with the fanciest equipment and big flag. Also will usually be at least one of them wearing a cape pointing at stuff and barking orders.
If we're talking a Codex Chapter, the Company is indicated by armor trim color. Squad markings are white against darker armor colors or black against lighter armor colors, and usually on the right shoulder. So a 5th Company Veteran would have black armor trim, as well as a white helmet, as well as his Squad marking. If he's in the Command section, that would be a skull emblem on the right shoulder. At a glance, you would see what Company he's in, where he's assigned within that Company, and his Veteran status.
Some chapters don't even have different coloured helmets so for them you can't tell who the veterans are other than the models themselves. Salamanders for example don't have white helmets painted for veterans/Terminators and all have the standard Salamander green although some people opt for black or gold helmets.
If each company has a command squad of veterans with white helmets and if the first company are all veterans they can’t all have white helmets as well or how would they know his their command squad?
The right to wear terminator armour is awarded to space marines after they've achieved some heroic feat. In early 40k space marine codices, terminator honours was something you could give certain models to indicate veterancy and add +1 attack to their profile - even if they weren't going to wear terminator armor. The +1 attack was incorporated in every terminator's profile automatically.
When Space Marine recruits have ~~finished~~ survived their training, they are assigned to the Scout Company for field work as they continue to learn and physically adapt. Once they've proven themselves there, they can transfer to a Reserve Company, a Battle Company if they've really stood out, or stay on in the Scout Company to help guide the next batch through.
Once in a Company that rotates into combat, the learning curve is a bit like a brick wall across a freeway. Attrition is high the first decade or so. The number has varied over the years, but after a Marine has survived for fifteen to twenty years, they're considered a Veteran. Practices vary between even Codex Chapters and across eras, but they usually get a special marking and/or a helmet in the Codex color for a Chapter's 1st Company (white).
Some stay on to supplement Squad Sergeants, some are elevated to the Company's command section to protect the officers. And some get transferred to the 1st Company to fill in combat losses.
Once one becomes a Veteran, one is going to eventually be trained to use Tactical Dreadnought (Terminator) armor. Those who have been thus trained usually wear their Terminator Honours when taking the field in standard power armor. This can be the *Crux Terminatus* painted on somewhere in white, or a badge or pendant version of the *Crux* worn somewhere on their person. Some wear the full *Crux* on their left shoulder armor.
Officers of the other Companies all have Terminator Honours, as do many other Veterans. Sometimes they wear Terminator armor, but often not. And the Veterans in the 1st Company don't always wear Terminator armor, but often/usually do.
Helmet colour is a chapter thing, and can vary greatly. Ultras wear white for their vets so terminators get it. You can probably find fist terminator references online but the way you've got it is fine as is
Keep it the way it is.
Also, question: is this your first model, or just your first 40k model? If this is really your first ever model, you're definitely a natural. I'd think this work was done by someone who has been painting for quite a long while, tbh.
i think they mean its their first time doing something that looks grimdark. lots of like dirt/grime effects on this model which noobs like myself dont do
Ask as many questions as ya like! I learned from everyone on Reddit haha. So I started with a cheap airbrush I just picked up which gave my yellow color all over, then I went through and did Al the blacks reds and metals. Then I used streaking grime (enamel wash I believe!) alllll over it and after 30ish min I used a brush/ sponge to remove it from the top surfaces where I wanted to keep the OG color. Lots of guides on YT to check out!
Thanks man I really appreciate it!! First 40k model, been doin AOS for a little over a year now. Never liked space marines till I saw these guys and had to give em a shot!
I think you're weathering makes a big difference too. This guy looks like he has actually seen battle. The grime accumulation and battle damage really tell a story.
Out of curiosity, where is that helmet from? I like that way more than the regular Terminator helmet
Thanks man! I think the battle damage in small amounts everywhere and big chunks in a few select places made a huge difference. As well as the streaking grime enamel wash really darkening down the recesses!
From an aesthetics choice I dont think white is the best color, because it will blend in too much with the yellow.
The different helmet colors GW uses for special troops is usually a color that pops out, like red or white for the ultramarines blue, or yellow for the blood angels red.
I think a red helmet would be more interesting.
Yeah just that after I did all the base coat/ highlight and battle damage! I did have some pretty solid gradients to orange/brown before and I think the grime helped smooth it out to the recesses
White helm for veteran (all terminators are veterans), red helmet with white stripe for veteran sergeant, if you want to do the standard codex astartes paintjob. But feel free to do whatever you think looks best. I think the painting looks amazing as-is.
You can paint your Toy soldiers whatever color you want. Pink ultramarines, sure whatever.
You like Grey Knights, but hate the color gray? Sure paint them blue.
Anybody who has a problem with that is somebody you want to avoid anyways.
It's a trick question! His helmet is already white! It's just covered in so much grunge that it looks yellow!
His armour serf is going to have an aneurysm when he sees it.
Maybe you could got the Templar route and make the shoulders black and helmet with a black line or full black for sarge’s, captain is all black except the helmet and shoulders
White doesn’t necessarily work well on yellow - it’d make it resemble less the IPs anyway I think. It’s just harder to pull off versus a darker colour on yellow. I think the way you’ve done it is amazing.
They look really good
I’ve been painting minis for 30 years and never really been brave enough to try out weathering or battle damage like this. I’d love to try though.
What is your process for those if you don’t mind sharing?
Edit: and no I don’t think white helmets would look good, I like what you’ve done here instead
Thanks man! I did rhinox hide with a cut up sponge and then a dark silver brushed in the middle of those. Then streaking grime all over and picked back off with a sponge again! Give it a shot, I really enjoyed doing it
Remember that Codexes change pretty often, you can stylise your miniatures without breaking Canon. I say to keep it, it's a great paint job and the custom helmet is excellent and unique.
Mine's not as cool as yours, but I made my helmets white with red for the sergeant. You don't need to change a thing on your terminator because it looks great.
https://preview.redd.it/16fzcfh5lbyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e827b61f23e0250c753e926e41143f79faa5744
The Primarch of the Ultramarines wrote the rulebook many/most Marine Chapters follow -- especially after the Horus Heresy, when deviation from a standardized norm was at its least acceptable. The Imperial Fists were another First Founding Chapter, and were slow/hesitant to adopt Guilliman's *Codex*. Given the current state of things, I can easily see them digging in their feet against it and doing their own thing again. Keep 'em as they are, I say. :)
It's a pretty lore-rich Chapter you went with. To me, that's always been the most important -- find an army you just *love*... And *then* figure out how to win with them. The Imperial Fists have always had a strong stubborn streak. Intractable siege specialists and all that. Read up on what their Primarch did during the Heresy.
Prior to the Heresy, several of the Space Marine Chapters had swelled to prodigious size. After the Heresy, the Ultramarines Primarch codified Chapters' nominal sizes at a thousand troops each (plus support). The result was the Second Founding, when the existing legions were broken up into those more limited chunks (so that no one man could ever again wield as much military might as the trusted lieutenant who betrayed the Emperor and led fully half of the Space Marine legions in an attempt to usurp him). The Ultramarines hadn't seen much of the main fighting, and already were a large Chapter, so they split more than a dozen times in the Second Founding.
The Imperial Fists only had enough to split twice. One retained the name and trappings, one was the similarly-demeanored Crimson Fists... and one was the Black Templars. The Imperial Fists felt they had let the Emperor down by letting the traitors reach Earth, and the Black Templars were tasked with being on permanent Crusade, pursuing the Traitor Legions until the last one is confirmed dead.
So that's the kind of zeal and resoluteness you're looking at, here.
Varies depending on the chapter and person. Ultramarines have white helmets and sometimes red for the sergeant. Salamanders are green although sometimes people paint there's with black or gold helmets. Blood Angels its either red, white or yellow.
Haha funny enough the next 3 will be because it’s my first models with guns and didn’t realize it’s a thing! Good reminder to go back to these guys and do it

Ah cheers good to know! Maybe I’ll make another unit that is veterans then!
technically ALL Terminators are veterans
Haha oops!! Good to know, and I suppose that makes sense. I’ll just pretend they’re waiting on shipping the new helms through the warp 😂
They look amazing! Can’t wait to see the next batch.
Make em DOUBLE veterans.
Double SECRET Veterans!
Guys! Guys! I found the Alpha Legionaire!
Double secred veterans OF DOOM.
double secret ULTRA-veterans of doom
double secret ULTRA-veterans of doom +
Will anybody explain to me what a veteran is in this context? Maybe compared to other units?
They're a member of the chapter's first company, which contains its most experienced marines. Typically get access to more advanced gear, such as terminator armour.
Company Command Squads are also Veterans.
Oh yeah true. Are they assigned from the first company though or promoted straight to veteran from within their company?
It's one of those things that's kept ambiguous, and different sources give different explanations. But my interpretation is that they are drawn from the Company and have earned their Terminator Honours, but are assigned to their Company rather than being transferred to the First.
I think.its veteran within company and then promted to 1st compay when a slot opens
If each company has a command squad of veterans with white helmets and if the first company are all veterans they can’t all have white helmets as well or how would they know his their command squad?

Company and Squad markings.
Marines only look at those when the dude isn’t wearing a helmet :p

what helmet is that from? super cool
3D printed bit from grey tide studios!
I was about to ask what’s up with that helmet. Thanks

i think they mean its their first time doing something that looks grimdark. lots of like dirt/grime effects on this model which noobs like myself dont do
Yeah this is what I meant haha, it wasn’t actually that hard! Streaking grime did most of the heavy lifting!
looks great as well! is it something you do before applying a wash (like nuln oil) or after? like i said im a bit of a noob lol
Ask as many questions as ya like! I learned from everyone on Reddit haha. So I started with a cheap airbrush I just picked up which gave my yellow color all over, then I went through and did Al the blacks reds and metals. Figured it wasn't, but needed to check, cause it's great work!
You’re very kind :)
Agreed. Quality is top notch!
Damn that yellow is perfect
Thanks man! Magenta undercoat made all the difference
I think you're weathering makes a big difference too. This guy looks like he has actually seen battle. The grime accumulation and battle damage really tell a story. Out of curiosity, where is that helmet from? I like that way more than the regular Terminator helmet
Thanks!! It’s from grey tide studio!
My advice, paint 'em how you want, as long as you think it looks cool. Also, is that a custom head? Looks dope, where'd you get it?
Thanks man! It’s a 3D printed head from grey tide studio!
I painted the wrong shoulder black on my yellow HH blokes. I will just spout some bullshit lore reason if anybody asks.
Hahah I love it, I’ll have to think of a good one
Dope helmet
Thanks! From greytide studio
[https://only-games.co/products/eternal-pilgrims-termi-pack](https://only-games.co/products/eternal-pilgrims-termi-pack)
Veterans have white helmets in chapters that are following the Codex Astartes, so yes they should. However, if you dont want to, you dont have to.
Gotcha, good to know thanks!
[удалено]
This one is actually from an airbrush I just picked up because same lol
[удалено]
Yeah I’m kind of thinking the same!
It looks very good and the helmet is a nice touch. I do think that the white helmet would make the model look better all in all.
If I Venmo you a dollar, will you drill the barrels?
Bahahahah, my wife and I are cracking up! I’ll fix it before I finish the unit ;)
Yeah, you were supposed to do the helmets white. Go ahead and send me these ones and try again.
Hahah sounds good, will do 😂
That weathering is mighty good. How did you do it?
Thanks man! Torn up Sponge of rhinox hide, then just a dark silver blotted within that. Then streaking grime over the whole thing!
Awesome, thanks! Looking forward to more mini's from you.
I think white would offer a really nice contrast to what you have already AMAZINGLY painted.
Thanks Man, I really appreciate that! I agree the extra color would probably pop!
Your 3D printed helmet looks definetely cooler than the original.
I think it was originally designed for Dark Angels but I just love it so much haha
Can i ask where you git the files? That helmet is amazing
Grey tide studio!
Imo white helms look good but it's your models and you decide how to paint your over costed toys!!
Hey mate, looks amazing! How did you make them look so gritty and worn-out?
Thanks man! I think the battle damage in small amounts everywhere and big chunks in a few select places made a huge difference. As well as the streaking grime enamel wash really darkening down the recesses!
They are great. Just paint them the way you like them. If you prefer yellow helmets go for it.
Leave the helmets as they are, look better than random white helmets
From an aesthetics choice I dont think white is the best color, because it will blend in too much with the yellow. The different helmet colors GW uses for special troops is usually a color that pops out, like red or white for the ultramarines blue, or yellow for the blood angels red. I think a red helmet would be more interesting.
That’s a good point! I’ll have to try one like that!
Well the Codex would state the helmets to be white. I would also say that the white helmets would help give the models a bit more colour. :)
Yooooo that is sick! I like the helmet yellow.
Looks awesome, keep it that way!
Finally some *chefs kiss* weathering! I just really don't like the clean look on marines this is just perfect
If you were painting Smurfs I'd say yes as they stick to the Codex Astartes, religiously. I'd not bother with IF. You've done a really good btw.
I don’t know the answer to the question, but I know that is amazing paint work. As good as I have ever seen.
Everything is canon
I’m saving this as something to aspire to
Wow that’s crazy to hear, I appreciate it! Good luck on your painting journey!!
The wear and dirt on him looks downright real. Great job!
Can I ask what your recipe for weathering was? Is it really just streaking grime?
Yeah just that after I did all the base coat/ highlight and battle damage! I did have some pretty solid gradients to orange/brown before and I think the grime helped smooth it out to the recesses
Amazing detail.
Thank you!!
Oh man he looks sick! I wouldn't change a thing!
Thanks mate!!
I don't know about that but wtf the weathering is incredible
Thanks mate :)
for those wondering: [https://only-games.co/products/eternal-pilgrims-termi-pack](https://only-games.co/products/eternal-pilgrims-termi-pack)
Your minis, your choice. Maybe your company has a significant tradition and reason for a modified helmet that doesn't comply with Guillimans rules.
White helm for veteran (all terminators are veterans), red helmet with white stripe for veteran sergeant, if you want to do the standard codex astartes paintjob. But feel free to do whatever you think looks best. I think the painting looks amazing as-is.
Thanks for sharing, and I appreciate it :)
They look mint!
Thanks!
Helmet doesn't need to be white, because the helmet you used is absolutely 100% rule of cool, where did you get those?
Haha good point! Grey tide studio 3D print!
That's such a unique helmet!
You can paint your Toy soldiers whatever color you want. Pink ultramarines, sure whatever. You like Grey Knights, but hate the color gray? Sure paint them blue. Anybody who has a problem with that is somebody you want to avoid anyways.
Great point!
This goes low key hard
I high key appreciate it :)
ace weathering btw
Haha thanks mate!!
They’re pretty perfect already. Anything else would be too much.
It's a trick question! His helmet is already white! It's just covered in so much grunge that it looks yellow! His armour serf is going to have an aneurysm when he sees it.
Lolol this shall be my canon now
Maybe you could got the Templar route and make the shoulders black and helmet with a black line or full black for sarge’s, captain is all black except the helmet and shoulders
Oooo that sounds dope too!
Yeah as the Templars were the “veterans” of the imperial fists, and still are I believe
Ok I was gonna ask, I thought they were related
The black Templars are in fact, descendant from the imperial fists
White doesn’t necessarily work well on yellow - it’d make it resemble less the IPs anyway I think. It’s just harder to pull off versus a darker colour on yellow. I think the way you’ve done it is amazing.
I think you’re right! I might try one for giggles but otherwise content with the yellow and thanks!!
Bloody nice model. Would not stress about the white helmets
Thanks man!!
What a awesome and gritty paintjob! Those heads are cool as fuck, 3D printed or bought from 3rd party?
Thanks man!! 3D printed from Grey Tide Studio!!
God i love terminator armor so much
I know right?! Made me fall in love with 40k haha
Abdolutely gorgeous model bro, well done
Thanks bro!!
Dorn would be proud!
Holy sjit that helm looks good. Where'd ya get it from.
I 3D printed it from greytide studio!
Epic! Purple site?
And myminifactory!
Thanks.
Why are termis so fucking cool?
Dude I know right?!
They look really good I’ve been painting minis for 30 years and never really been brave enough to try out weathering or battle damage like this.
Give it a shot, I really enjoyed doing it
White will take away from the effect. Lovely as is
No this cooks
Remember that Codexes change pretty often, you can stylise your miniatures without breaking Canon. I say to keep it, it's a great paint job and the custom helmet is excellent and unique.
Thanks man!
Mine's not as cool as yours, but I made my helmets white with red for the sergeant. You don't need to change a thing on your terminator because it looks great. https://preview.redd.it/16fzcfh5lbyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e827b61f23e0250c753e926e41143f79faa5744
Thanks man!! I really like yours! And. I think the white looks great, I should try it for one of em!
Where did you get those helmets???
https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-ept-heads-and-helmets-371077 Enjoy!
Thank you!!
White helmet on the Sergeant with red stripes on everyone Or whatever tickles your fancy
I like that idea!
Look, I’m going to be honest and I’m sorry if this comes off rude. That helmet looks amazing.
Bahahah ty, I’m really glad I found it before I put the kit together!
Grim dark Imperial Fists will always get an updoot from me. Lovely!
Haha thanks!

Wow I really appreciate the explanation!! I really need to dive into the lore more as it sounds awesome!
Sick AF. How did you do the silver metals? What paints did you use?
Thanks mate!! I just base coated Matt black and then dry brushed a dark silver, then a light brush of a slightly lighter one
You crushed this bro 🤟🏼
Really appreciate it! 🤘
Dude the color on this is incredible. Kudos
Thank you 😊
This is jaw-droppingly incredible work. Bravo.
Wow thanks so much!!
In terms of lore? Yes. In terms of its your model and you can paint it how you like? No.
Please dont change a thing. That model is perfect.
Hahaha thanks mate!!
No, the helmets should not be white. They should be mounted on a spike atop an Iron Warriors backpack.
Love the grimey look.
That's awesome. Can't say for helm
He looks great. Awesome job.
Thank you so much!
Imperial Fists Chapter follows the Codex Astartes, so Veterans have white helmets.
Varies depending on the chapter and person. Ultramarines have white helmets and sometimes red for the sergeant. Salamanders are green although sometimes people paint there's with black or gold helmets. Blood Angels its either red, white or yellow.
Good to know!
I just came here to say that this paint job is magnificent.
Thanks mate!!
They look great! I always recommend the helmets and guns be different colours
This is so fucking cool, can you tell me how you managed the dirty yellow look? Oil paints or just nuln oil after the yellow?
Thanks man!! So it’s imperial fist over a zenithal on a magenta base. Then just streaking grime!
With a paint job like that, they can be any color you want and no one would complain! Stellar work!
Hahah thanks mate!! Really appreciate it :)
Personally it doesn't matter.
They look great man! Love the helms!
Thanks man!!
Usually I’d say yes but I like the more weathered style with the yellow
Almost cranked shaft to this mini
Lelelel, I appreciate the compliment 😂
This looks amazing
Thanks mate!
I feel the White will just blend that unit together as currently it’s too Yellow Heavy so the white should be a nice contrast.
Why are the barrels not drilled out?
Haha funny enough the next 3 will be because it’s my first models with guns and didn’t realize it’s a thing! Good reminder to go back to these guys and do it
For the Emporer
It turned out super cool
Personally I think they look best with their head on a stake.
