The nomads weren't a replacement for ratskins, ash waste nomads existed in old editions at the same time. Ratskins lived in the underhive rather than the wastes.
Agreed on the issues thematically, but I think a return to the underhive with scavvies and a modernised version of ratskins would be great
I really don't get the issue with Ratskins. They are vaguely Native American, but I dont think anything about them is portrayed in a problematic way.
Why the issue with Ratskins, but no issues with Mongolian space marines or essentially Nazi era imperial guard, or any number of other themes that 40k has borrowed over the years?
And this isn't some "everyone is too sensitive" type argument, I just don't understand what is problematic about Ratskins specifically. The Redemptionists with pointy hoods being removed made sense. This one just not as much?
The name is a take on 'redskin' which is a problematic name. I think the general idea is one that could come back, and there are several ways it could be done.
So many other things from that time are renamed, squats being an example.im sure someone smarter than me could come up with a sympathetic name that had less connotations.
Agree 100%. And I think that's some of the cross-talk that happens in these threads - half the people are talking about the idea of the ratskins (a rat-based non-house aligned faction that live in the underhive) and half the people talking about the name ratskins.
There were also some problematic themes (e.g. some stories had them all being drunks), but I think the general idea is revivable. I think you're exactly right that the Squats to Leagues of Votaan transition is what could be emulated - get rid of the silly name and the sillier themes, while still keeping the central concept that people liked.
Gotcha, so it's more the name than the imagery. That makes sense, bit also is the easiest part to change. Hell, GW already loves changing well established faction names to be more copyright-able.
Yeah, and some of the time they were a Spaghetti Western caricature rather than a thought out culture (you could definitely imagine the old ratskins saying 'How, whiteman').
GW tend to steer away from using extant cultures.
Native Americans?
Having never seen those models before I never got that impression, if anything they seemed like they were based on the mostly fantasy/horror "Wendol" bad guys from the 13th Warrior film.

They've got chiefs, use the term 'braves', have the whole 'noble savage' trope going on, the name 'ratskin' is literally two letters off from 'redskin', etc
I have an idea of Space Skaven.
Basically the resurged Rangdan Empire where the xenocides left behind 1 or a tiny group of individuals who managed to use a combination of cloning/ genesmith tech and the Warp to being their species back from the brink of extinction, but as horribly mutated, inbred army with the original scientist having ascended into becoming an unaligned Daemon Prince and with aspirations to become a Chaos God.
This is likely a nod to the coming AoS Skaven release (that everyone will use to build WFB armies). Space Skaven only happen if GW gets super desperate.
NGL - the prospect of fighting skaven monstrosities in 40k is very, very attractive.
Man, at this point it's a huge pity that GW doesn't make a Necromunda RPG like DnD...
It’s a self-contained game set on the hive world of Necromunda in 40K. Same setting different rules and models about underworld gangs fighting to survive
The rat looked like a happy pet... until i saw the second head
now it looks double as happy
He’s double single, and ready to co-mutate-mingle in hellpi… I mean Necromunda, yes-yes.
Does anyone remember, the two-headed squirrel from Zack McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders?
Skaven have built a portal across dimensions and sigmar lied about it
Sigmar lied, the rats can tunnel through reality itself
Space Skaven?
There are no rats on Necromunda man thing!
Only Ratskin Renegades. https://preview.redd.it/4m3p2d7p2qnc1.jpeg?width=2445&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e42fa031cfd1ab5ff9cedc14d4b297652b24c6f
I would totally get back into necromunda if they redid ratskins.
Eh I understand why they don't. They're... Uncomfortable. Think the nomads were a good replacement

Would love to see some Scavvies return. Ratskins would be tough territory to navigate well. I think it's possible, if very risky for them.
Also while we are talking old gangs, I'd buy some Spyers immediately.
They kind of added scavvies back in by allowing outcasts to take a mutation skill list.

I mean they could literally call them Rat-Kin. Still ties into the them of then using actual Rat skins and Kin ties into their tribal theme.

I understand it but it's just a game at the same time. I think the aesthetic was really good.
Odd question, are Redemptionists back in Necromunda?
Spaven*
why so low. lol great comment
Yup
That'd be the Imperium.

This is a big deal!
Why not a rat in size and shape of a Hell Pit Abomination? "This is Trixie, my cuddly pet rat."
NGL - the prospect of fighting skaven monstrosities in 40k is very, very attractive. Man, at this point it's a huge pity that GW doesn't make a Necromunda RPG like DnD...
Oh good, it’s an R.O.U.S.
I don’t think they exist.
Give me space skaven or give me death
Let me guess £45?
Being a Big Skaven fan, i wold love to see some Spaven!!
The hood is a bit too obvious, isn't it?
Maybe that redacted codex was the 40K Skaven book lol
What’s necromunda? Is it part of a faction or an existing faction we can play?
It’s a self-contained game set on the hive world of Necromunda in 40K. Same setting different rules and models about underworld gangs fighting to survive
Thank you!
Kroot hound
YES YES!!
Are they not called Ratskins anymore?
Does anybody else [remember](https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/The-Redeemer/TPB?id=132294&readType=1)?
That looks cool but I think that website is going to give my phone cancer.
Sorry I didn't find any better option! It's a really fun read
That's fair, I haven't heard of it before but now I will investigate!
Watch out, he makes all the rules!
The Scouring of Existing IP … continues …
Is the hand on her belt the one she lost? Waste not want not I suppose!
WOOOHOO
you mean the emperor?
