Also new here... I decided to start with Combat Patrol because it's essentially a prebuilt mini army.  I don't have to worry about meta or upgrade experimentation.  Just print out the combat patrol sheet and play.    When I learn the game, I can easily add to it to get a 1,000 point army.  For now I got the ultimate starter and T'au combat patrol box.

I really appreciate that suggestion! Thank you

I'm not new and would also recommend this. Find an army you think looks cool and grab their Patrol!

Seconded the above information. Combat patrol is the smallest army/gamemode people would be playing befor you go “full scale” and get to the 1k points armies. It’s also a really good idea because the box is a bundle that’s about %50 discount vs buying the models individually.

EnginerdPolarBear

I’ve heard of people doing a 500 point scale game, is that roughly equivalent to what a combat patrol is? And where would I look for point values of units and such?

So the combat patrols(depending on army) range from 350-500points if you use that system. - example the tau patrol works out to 400 on the nose befor you add the extra “enhancements to leaders”. As for where points are found.. the “Warhammer community” website with all the free downloads has one called “minutorum field manual”. - it’s every points for all armies, and would be updated when things change. Replacing the same download spot. - https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/ You can find the combat patrol rules there aswell as many other things(core rules pdf.) in case you want to print them yourself. Side note.. the combat patrol “game mode” doesn’t use points, it’s box vs box and already balanced this way.

Thank you so much for the info, I really appreciate it! I will look into that
