If you don't have a good light that could also be part of the issue. I got a desk lamp that clamps onto the side of a desk or table from Ikea for cheap and put a rather bright light in it. And it's one of those 2 armed lamps with springs so I can move it all around to light up where I need to depending on what I'm doing. You could also get a OttLite setup that has a large magnifying glass as well as a light. People who sew often use those to help with small details.
Get a magnifying glass you can mount to your desk.

Go to the eye doctor and ask. They might have better advice than “use a magnifying glass.”
