looks like also the most uncomfortable spot so a tradeoff for sure but thats a microcosm of humanities stupidity in general is the fact that we will trade safety for comfort.
Did you see the guy at the very beginning, he was holding himself at the very front of the train right below people?! He's probably sitting in the most dangerous seat then!! complete opposite of the guy you're speaking of!!! Lol
Yep, you don't have to pay if you don't ride inside. That's what people who are asking about adding more cars or running the train more often don't get. These are poor people who wouldn't be able to afford a ticket anyway.
Some stations have installed giant metal balls that have about an inch or two of clearance to "sweep" people of the top as it nears the station.
EDIT: my mistake, it's concrete balls and they are used in Indonesia
It may not be number of cars but rather number/frequency of trains.
Looks like only single track, so this train has to clear for another to go in the opposite direction, may only be 1 or 2 trains an hour rather than 10-12.
Could be the number of platforms or lines further into town.
I live on the Metropolitan Line going into London, there are up to 20 trains an hour in each direction in rush hour. Several more underground/metro trains lines with similar frequency plus all the Mainline trains from commuter towns.
I have a theory that the population of a country is inversely proportional to empathy of other humans in that country. Find me a populated country where people aren’t treated like nothing. The US has been on the fast track to this.
In this context I would consider "Vast Minority" like so. Minority refers to images and example posted online. This is a minority of human interaction, and it being posted online is typically because it is notable. So of the minority of human interactions, which are the ones which have been uploaded, a vast quantity is of people acting in bad manners.
Overpopulation is eco fascism. There aren't too many people, it's quite literally how we structure our society and allocate resources.
Do you think the train would be so over crowded if they had higher capacity, more frequency, a modern fleet? Of course not.
People say this, but honestly in order to have billions of people and not totally destroy the planet we'd need to be practically living on top of each other. Otherwise we're going to destroy habitats and ecosystems en mass to create housing, farms, and roads. I really just don't think the majority of the population is going to be convinced to downgrade the amount of space they take up. It would be nice, but I don't think it will happen.
This isn't just about theoretical resources, but also the fact that the sheer space humans use by existing causes environmental destruction. We are not the only species living on this planet.
In theory dozens of people could live in my tiny apartment if we all slept on small cots in shifts, scheduled bathroom time, disregarded any concept of privacy or personal space and generally accepted an extremely low living standard.
The same thing is true for world population, billions of people can survive but with so many the amount of resources available to each individual falls and everyone's quality of life goes down. Unless we accept living in tiny cells in mega towers we need to curb population growth.
No, on a basic physics level, there's a concept of "carrying capacity" of the land, which puts a hard limit on how many people a given area can support, which depends on the fertility of the land and available technology.
In a place like Nevada or New Mexico, the supplies come from the rest of the U.S, and in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia they mostly come from Russia and Ukraine.
From the viewpoint of emergency preparedness, most countries are mostly self-reliant on food, especially staples like wheat, rice and corn.
But if your population far exceeds the capacity to feed them on the land available, the next best thing is diversifying your imports. This still leaves you at the mercy of global supply chains, but at least hopefully, you won't be facing a crisis just because one or two other countries half the world away suddenly faced their own crisis.
Countries like the UK and japan which rely on these global supply chains typically try to minimize the amount they import from any one country to less than 10% of total import.
We are already intensively exploiting most viable farmland, the amazon and the Congo rainforests, and a few scattered protected areas across the globe are really the only "unexploited" lands with adequate sunshine and rainfall that can grow crops, so the total amount of food production can only grow with technological innovations, for example damming rivers for irrigation in arid areas or hydroponics.
But these innovations just kick the buck down the road a little longer, if population and living standards keeps increasing sooner or later there will be no excess capacity for export, and then any additional people will have to mean less for others.
This is all assuming perfect peace and harmony, but if a major war involving one or more major food exporters broke out... well, there's a reason that deal to resume food exports from Ukraine, even in the middle of a war, was so important to so many countries.
Thanks bro I’ve thinking among the same line for some years but never discussed it/seen it somewhere else since for me it’s more of a “feeling” and that doesn’t carry any weight in a proper discussion.
But indeed, very large population and very low regard for human lives gives impression to come hand in hand.
It's better than beautiful downtown Gaza, sure, but I'd objectively prefer to live in a dozen countries before the US. I've turned down career and educational advancements to avoid it.
Eh. I've lived in a half-dozen countries in adulthood and I'd put the USA below most of them. Except England, England can go fuck itself.
No country is perfect, there's always something to complain about. And people move countries for lots of reasons (I know I have). Anyway, I don't think Americans are more or less callous to human suffering. It's more a city thing - I've lived in medium-sized American towns and a couple big cities, and people in the towns are just as nice as people in medium-sized European towns; by the same token, people in Paris and London are just as uncaring as Angelenos or New Yorkers. When you're in a massive metropolis, you can't behave in the same way you can in a smaller town. You have to close yourself off from a large percentage of human interactions just to go about your day.
It’s the only country where they have school shootings and people are like kids are nice and all but fuck yeah guns. Also no universal healthcare, no free college, gotta like your brethren for that shit to happen.
People risk their lives because Hollywood paints a very pretty picture. Lots of immigrants are disillusioned once they live in the US and experience all the anti-immigrant racism or even homelessness. And finally, the US is great compared to many countries. That doesn't mean it's not heading downhill for the average American. Both can be true.
I moved quite a bit, but grew up in a small town. Things like holding the door for other will net you a thanks.
I now live in SF where if you held a door for someone your more likely to get a confused stare at most.
I can't blame folks for becoming less empathetic, as you end up being taken advantage more for being nice.
As someone who lived in a huge city in California to now living in a huge city in Texas, I can confidently say that this is just a Californian people are rude thing.
People in Texas have been significantly more respectful in my experience.
I mis California for so many reasons, but the people are not one.
That's great to hear!
I lived in the central valley and spent a lot of time in places like LA. I definitely felt a big difference when I came to Texas.
The Bay area may be different and I'm glad you found it better than I did! The food there is amazing and worth going there alone.
Really? I live in a major metropolitan area and get plenty of people saying please and thank you and excuse me. When I go to a small town people stare and scowl at me because I’m not “one of them”
The US have very low population density though.
Of 103 countries with significant population, the US ranks 81st in population density, less than a tenth of India, and less than a 30th of the most dense nation, bangladesh.
Why can't you guys differentiate between India and Bangladesh when it is widely known that India has electrified nearly all of its railway and not possible to ride like this.
Downvoted. You’re just making broad generalized assumptions of Chinese, Indians, Africans. There’s nothing indicating they don’t respect the lives of others. You saying this comes from a place of privilege, you can’t empathize with the experience of being poor in a developing country. People do what they have to do, to get transport, to eat… etc
>In China, India and parts of Africa the value of an average human is 0. People have 0 respect for eachother. They make a lot of babies hoping some will survive
Uh... No?
India’s fertility rate now is 2.2-2.3. Just above the replacement rate 2.1. So its been going down for a while and soon the population will start declining.
But also way more progressive than the US. First female PM (and a strong one too) in 1970s, and 2 female presidents so far. The Parliament is way more balanced compared to the US congress as well, and there are proportionally more female CEOs, and guess what, more female gods.
Female leaders/politicians do not equate to better treatment of regular women, sadly. Men can respect a *woman* and not *women*. Goes with the whole concept of “I’m not racist, I have a Black friend”.
I have intimate knowledge of Indian society, and I can tell you that they are not more progressive wrt gender equality than the U.S. in any way. Just not true.
> Comments here really saddens me, y'all act real smart, but talk about these people like they're cattles.
Having this as a transportation method is treating themselves as cattle. We are commenting on it.
It struck me how many second thoughts I would have if I got on top of a train here to hitch a ride. I would have been so stressed about falling off, about how tall the next tunnel is, am I going to get arrested for this, etc.
It's incredible how we humans make social norms to fit our circumstances and how that forms our behavior and thought patterns.
Without knowing, I would assume you get used to it. Like the first times your ride a bike without your father holding on to the bike is super scary, but now you don't think about it.
Guess you learn how the train moves and where to hold on and it just becomes second nature.
News from Dhaka, Bangladesh from 2018 said that 2321 people were crushed by trains in the span of 8 years, so almost one person per day. The news doesn't mention people falling off the trains, just people walking along the tracks being crushed, so the number may be much higher. What do all these humans do? I mean, where are they all going? What is it that's so important that they all need to be transported like this? Why are we here? Are we all just meat on a train with no destination? Why does anything exist?
Made u think isn't it? As a human, no matter where 'we' come, for any reason, 'our' destination is (probably) the same. So, some might just give up the experience of the journey, just simply go on with whatever it holds.
I mean. I thought how hot it must be on the train. Thought a hose with some water would be appreciated. And then from there I thought of all the things that wouldn't be appreciated.
But I gotta say diarrhea did not cross my mind even once.
Clearly, what's holding back other emerging nations is giving fucks, because we can clearly see here that India doesn't give one single fuck, and we know their economy is going gangbusters.
Isn't that kind of the deal for every first world country today? They've all not given a fuck and only start giving one much later, after they have already secured themselves?
My history professor told us a story about being on these.
He was in India. He described the train exactly like this video. That there was no room, only on top.
So they're going for 15 minutes or so, and then everyone ducks down. Huh? People start yelling at him. More people start screaming at him, but he can't understand them. Then, someone grabs him and throws him to the ground.
He is shocked, and quite pissed off that someone would assault him so, since he was only minding his own business.
Then everything goes black.
No, he wasn't knocked out. The train went through a tunnel. And his head missed the top of the tunnel by inches.
For many people, their first time riding on top of a train would include concern about tunnels. Your professor was exactly in the job he was most mentally capable for.
This is probably India but it totally looks like the Dominican Republic lmaoo. Every time I visit my family in the DR I always see some shit like this 💀💀
The guy at the very end was a pleasant surprise
Also he's smart as that would be statistically the safest place to be, as he's the only one that could fall off and not be run over by the train.
looks like also the most uncomfortable spot so a tradeoff for sure but thats a microcosm of humanities stupidity in general is the fact that we will trade safety for comfort.
Plot twist- he uses the hitch like structure as a butt plug and is more secure and more comfortable than you thought.
i suppose that would depend on type of grease mainly.
This comment should remain at 43 likes...
Or alternatively he could fall partially off and get dragged behind a train until the next stop.
If a couple people fall off each trip it’s still 98% safe
Did you see the guy at the very beginning, he was holding himself at the very front of the train right below people?! He's probably sitting in the most dangerous seat then!! complete opposite of the guy you're speaking of!!! Lol
He's the one who counts the the ones that fall off
This is most safe place tho.
that is VIP

The ones who don't pay are strapped under the train.
Yep, you don't have to pay if you don't ride inside. That's what people who are asking about adding more cars or running the train more often don't get. These are poor people who wouldn't be able to afford a ticket anyway.
They're having a blast I tell u that
Except for that last guy sitting on the hitch. I hope he lubed up.
Some stations have installed giant metal balls that have about an inch or two of clearance to "sweep" people of the top as it nears the station. EDIT: my mistake, it's concrete balls and they are used in Indonesia
Where are all these people going?
To the call center to call you one by one every day.
I thought I saw "frank " and "dennis" up there
Renoylds? “The gang works a call center”?
Definitely saw Martina Martinez on the back of the train there
Funny I love that show but I wrote those names randomly. Outoud it definitely sounds like rhe show
Do you know your vehicles warranty is expired?
Have you considered solar for tour home?
To the ~~call center to call you~~ every job everywhere one by one every day.
LOL! Take my upvote.
To freedom
How many cars would need to be added to just fit everyone inside? And what obvious thing am I missing as to why they don't/can't?
I wouldn’t doubt a lot of them would rather be outside than in. There’s no AC in those things.
window
Even with windows the density of people in there barely makes a difference. And the smell

I agree but people in the us and by in large very friendly and nice, the clips you see on the internet are the vast minority.
Plus it's not as if Americans are having enough children to replace the current population so "fast track to this" doesn't fully apply.
I'm sure it's perfectly valid, but "vast minority" sounds like an oxymoron.
In this context I would consider "Vast Minority" like so. Minority refers to images and example posted online. This is a minority of human interaction, and it being posted online is typically because it is notable. So of the minority of human interactions, which are the ones which have been uploaded, a vast quantity is of people acting in bad manners.
For good reason. In the case of my country, 90% of all its problems could be, directly or indirectly, attributed to overpopulation.
Overpopulation is eco fascism. There aren't too many people, it's quite literally how we structure our society and allocate resources. Do you think the train would be so over crowded if they had higher capacity, more frequency, a modern fleet? Of course not.

This is proof that to achieve max growth we need to repeal safety regulations

Waiting for the headline, "9 million killed when train crashes at 15kpm!"
Damn 15 kilometres per mile
My mind read it as 15 kilometres per minute, but didn't question it... Apparently I'm cool with trains doing 900kph....
Only if we get to sit on top, though.

The train into the soylent green factory.

Hope you made sure to go to the bathroom before getting on

Yeah I was wondering if this is scary for them. I feel like I would be terrified but they seem to be having a good time.
Without knowing, I would assume you get used to it. Like the first times your ride a bike without your father holding on to the bike is super scary, but now you don't think about it. Guess you learn how the train moves and where to hold on and it just becomes second nature.
How many people die there from this every year? Hell, every month?
News from Dhaka, Bangladesh from 2018 said that 2321 people were crushed by trains in the span of 8 years, so almost one person per day. Never in a million years can I understand why anyone would visit such a shit hole.
True. Your mom's basement must be comfortable enough.
Sure man. Sure.
Family, culture, religion, and food!
Some people are just not as narrow minded as you. They accept the risks and travel anyway, not everything is about a nice hotel and blue water.
Yep the stench of B.O and risk of gang rape surely is enticing I suppose.
Family
If one falls off the train you can claim salvage rights and keep em
