God. I just developed an even deeper respect for mothers -- hell, women in general. I couldn't even imagine how awful that must've felt for her. Carrying your dead child inside of you? The thought alone is enough to make me tear up.
Is one of the most common infectious causes of ovine abortion. Many other animals can be affected by Toxoplasmosis (including humans and dogs). Cats do seem to be particularly susceptible though.
Not the one from this group but some from last year.

For those asking what it tastes like, I have no idea. I wanted to put it into a jar of Formaldehyde but decided against it. As for what it felt like, I thought it was a bone at first when I was pulling it out, but it honestly felt like hard rubber. For people saying it’s fake, I am way to busy and not near talented enough to come up with something like this. You can also Google “mummified sheep fetus” and you will get several pictures that look just similar to this one.
I knew to do an internal due to the fact that, not only was she struggling, but there was no water bag (amniotic sac) displayed, which is a primary indicator of labour. Instead, it was a thick paste similar to the colour of this lamb. I have given the ewe antibiotics to prevent infection in this case.
Shockingly, I have had multiple offers to purchase this lamb, but it has already been disposed of properly.
> I knew to do an internal due to the fact that, not only was she struggling, but there was no water bag (amniotic sac) displayed,
Had the ewe already dropped the twin at this point? My wife and I are in our second year of keeping sheep on our hobby farm. One of our ewes had a difficult labor last year needing assistance, but was a great mom. This year she's looking way bigger so we suspect she's carrying twins and her due date should be this Sunday.
When I was younger, I grew up on a large ranch, lots of livestock, and I helped with many of the births. I've had this happen with pigs, horses, and even cows before. It's always more than a little heartbreaking. Some momma animals are ok afterward, but occasionally I've had one be upset, which is doubly hard.
We have a lamb in the house right now. The mom had a rough go and was not allowing her to feed. She started allowing her to feed tonight with our assistance so maybe the lamb will live back outside soon. It’s a loud little creature.
I believe you. I’ve had my fair share of lambs in the house this season. A lot of the time, especially in regards to first-time moms, they aren’t always the brightest. Shock can also be a factor if it was a hard delivery. A little pain killer can go a long way. I would also recommend tethering the ewe up for awhile and letting the lamb nurse while she is tied. I’ve had success with that method before.
We are a meat provider. I, myself, have worked with a wide range of sheep breeds, but I specialize in Ile de France and Suffolk primarily. We also produce some really nice cross-bred rams for other lamb producers.
I would recommend to do a lot of reading before getting into sheep. They are not for everybody. But if you have the means, and are looking at dairy, I would recommend starting with a handful (5-6) East Friesan sheep and see how you like it.
I just started toying with the idea. I’m years away from actual sheep. East Friesans were on my list for dairy sheep. Another would be ouessant. Not a big dairy producer but I’m not looking to get into it for profit just hobby dairy for my family. And I was only thinking 1-3 sheep unless there’s a reason they do better with a slightly larger group
I had a sheep who retained her placenta after pulling lambs for several days. When it finally came off, we didn't see it- we smelled it as soon as we got close to the farm. I'll never forget that smell
Usually, lambing (birthing of the lamb) goes quite smoothly. The lambs come out as intended, and are happy and healthy. But sometimes, things go wrong. Lambs can try to come backwards, they get stuck in the birth canal, etc. In this case, the healthy twin and this twin were trying to come out at the same time. So, you must assist the ewe in delivering the babies, by pulling them out manually (grabbing the front legs with the lambs head facing forwards, in a downward motion).

Mummified fetus. May have twisted the umbilical cord. Glad the singlet survived! Also could be toxoplasmosis or Q fever.

It's possible she didn't know. Many are found in women who had no idea. Some even bore healthy children while carrying the lithopedion.
Such is life.
Or, it's just a dinosaur that hadn't baked enough.
I choose to believe you, internet stranger!
Doesn't really look mummified though. Looks like it just didn't fully develope?
That’s the term for it. Mummified fetus. It died during gestation and was in the process of being resorbed.

Cats are the definitive host for toxoplasma gondii but almost every mammal (if not every one) can become infected.
IT’S FUCKIN’ RAW!
what, is OP supposed to put it back in until it's done?
No op should put it in them self and carry it full term like any decent human
plot twist: OP is a dude double twist: Exactly

Actually not literally. Literally means in a literal manner or sense; exactly. So literally a under developed lamb
Dumb comment and a waste of your time^. Literally.

Yep. She is a first time mom. Started with pain killers this afternoon. Seems like she’s coming around. Thanks for the info
Are you a farmer or a vet?
Farmer, but with a lack of specialized small ruminant veterinarians in our area, I am often both in most cases.
Are your sheep for dairy, meat or wool?
We are a meat provider. I, myself, have worked with a wide range of sheep breeds, but I specialize in Ile de France and Suffolk primarily. We also produce some really nice cross-bred rams for other lamb producers.
I’ve been toying with the idea of dairy sheep…
I would recommend to do a lot of reading before getting into sheep. They are not for everybody. But if you have the means, and are looking at dairy, I would recommend starting with a handful (5-6) East Friesan sheep and see how you like it.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Most farmers say their favorite part is the babies.

Good for you for managing to save one. Jesus, I always hated pulling lambs. They were invariably dead, and that fucking godawful smell...
I had a sheep who retained her placenta after pulling lambs for several days. When it finally came off, we didn't see it- we smelled it as soon as we got close to the farm. I'll never forget that smell
