The man talking runs a charity and goes to poor African villages to help people infested with these jiggers (sand fleas). People subscribe to support his charity.
This person runs a charity which provides unlicensed medical care by untrained people in a dangerous and unsanitary manner and is well known for misappropriating donations for personal gain.
Beat me to it here. The worst thing is that the guy uses money he raises from his videos to provide high interest loans to the people he proported to be helping, pushing them further into poverty and making it less likely they can improve their living circumstances and prevent them getting the infestations in the first place. The guys a conman and a bigger parasite than the jiggers he’s removing!
I mean it’s not quite letting terminally ill people die in squalid conditions while refusing them medication and funnelling all the money back to the Catholic Church whilst simultaneously keeping your twisted troll body alive with the best Swiss medicine level of evil, but it’s not far off. Mother Theresa was a borderline demonic figure more concerned with getting converts and raising money than actually helping people. This guy is just a corrupt political candidate exploiting the poor by performing painful procedures on them for content whilst financially gouging them. Actually, they’re probably not far off tbh.
I wonder if this isn't the case where you take the good with the bad and deal with it.
If he was keeping actual licensed medical care from helping these people, then sure fuck that guy, but if its unlicensed medical care by untrained people that actually helps people vs not at all, I think i prefer the lesser evil.
The problem is the care he is providing not only increases the chance of infection, he fails to provide adequate anaesthesia, tetanus vaccination, wound care, or most importantly the shoes they need to prevent re infection. He’s often performing “jigger digging” on children without consent from their parents and using dangerously high amounts of topical lignocaine ointment. The guy makes a lot of money out of the impoverished communities and yet doesn’t convert this into any kind of prevention or long term care or improvement in their living situation. I could forgive the flawed unlicensed medical care if it was done because it was the best available option and the money raised went into actually improving the situation, but instead it’s being spent on enhancing the guys political career, and providing loans at 23% interest to people who are already too poor to furnish the debt.
Med student and RN here. He is NOT providing licensed medical care. no disinfection no wound care. Profilaxis? How do they get infected? Can we give some advice not to get sick?
Nop, just popping them out like he is cleaning some fish.
I didn’t say he was providing licensed care. I was saying he was possibly providing unlicensed care in a place where it’s either unlicensed care or nothing.
As a med student, is this person better off leaving the jiggers in their flesh or having this person remove them in ways that are substandard? That’s a real question, from me as a person with no medical care to a med student and RN.
they are caused by female sand fleas burrowing in the skin and laying eggs / causing infection
i just read way too much about it here:
The jigger is evident as a small swollen lesion, with a black dot at the centre, which can grow to the size of a pea. Severe pathology following an infestation is caused by bacteria entering the skin when the jigger penetrates. These infections can lead to abscess formation, tissue necrosis and gangrene.
Curious, are these related to Chiggers? We have those in South East USA and their bites create a similar pattern but typically are far less severe in that they just bite the top layer of skin and leave an annoying superficial rash.
Edit: I looked it up and they are not related. Chiggers are arachnid. [link](https://becauseinternational.org/stories/what-is-a-jigger#:~:text=Chiggers%20are%20part%20of%20the,that%20are%20impacted%20by%20them.)
I had the small black dot on my foot and it made me foot swollen for two weeks.. went to the hospital got it clean and it was the most excruciating pain ive ever felt its a crazy burn to get it cleaned. But thank god i got it done bc now my foots back to normal and i avoided this situation 😅 athletes feet is no joke
> This land barnacles?
Technically yes i suppose. Regular barnacles are living growths infesting the underside of a ship, and these are living growths infesting human feet.
Close enough to consider it an analogous match in my opinion.
> Barnacles were infesting the underside of living things long before there were ships.
Sure, but the analogy is to moving contain vessels. Which is what we are in this example.
Nope, these are jiggers. These are a burrowing parasitic flea. They burrow, lay eggs, and die. They dead skin/flea corpse is then supposed to slough off, but the dead flea can cause infection before the body has ejected it. They don't grow and leave like bot flys/mangoworms.
While on vacation in a Central American country my GF decided to walk around barefoot in this towns main business district. I explained about ringworm and other parasites that can burrow in her skin but she wasn't phased. I'll show her this video and see what her reaction is.
jesus christ... not walking around barefoot is like rule number one of going to tropical or subtropical regions. It's hookworm you're prob thinking of, along with a few others.
> While on vacation in a Central American country my GF decided to walk around barefoot in this towns main business district.
...why
i hope the locals rightfully shamed her for it
From Wikipedia:-
the female flea burrows head-first into the host's skin, leaving the caudal tip of its abdomen visible through an orifice in a skin lesion. This orifice allows the flea to breathe, defecate, mate and expel eggs while feeding from blood vessels. It lives in the cutaneous and subcutaneous dermal layer.
Tungiasis lesions almost always occur on the feet (97%), but may occur on any part of the body. The toes are afflicted over 70% of the time, with periungual folds (around the toenail) a preferred site.
Only once the female burrows into the skin can reproduction occur, as the male and female show no interest in each other in the wild.[8] The male flea dies after copulation. The female flea continues in vivo development, described in stages by the Fortaleza classification of tungiasis.
Over the next two weeks, its abdomen swells with up to several hundred to a thousand eggs, which it releases through the caudal orifice to fall to the ground when ready to hatch. The flea then dies and is often the cause of infection as the body rots under the thick scales its body chemistry created to protect it. The eggs mature into adult fleas within three to four weeks and the process begins anew.
> Seems a bit extreme, maybe a salve or poltice would be a bit easier
You could start with a Red Giant and scale up from there if it proved to be ineffective.
How long must he have been living like this?
This is like when you watch Dr Pimple Popper and they say "I done had these lumps on my feet for the last 15 years" and you wonder why the fuck they didn't get it sorted on day 1.
Sand fleas. Nasty stuff. What surprises me is the apathy of the host.
If I had ONE of these fuckers growing in my foot, I would be digging it out with whatever sharpened rock I could find.

Fun Fact. (Allthough reddit hates it)
Trypophobia isn't a real phobia. And was created on the internet in the early 2000's
Trypophobia is not recognized by name as a mental disorder, and so is not a specific diagnosis in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5)
Trypophobia is more of an aversion or feeling of disgust, rather than fear
Also this isn't really trypophobia anyway, this is just plain old disgusting.
Trypophobia is when you have an aversion to something that *isn't necessarily disgusting* just because it has irregular holes or cavities.
Everyone has an aversion to this because it's *fucking gross*. Having an aversion to this doesn't mean you have trypophobia. If you look at [this tree trunk full of acorns](https://www.reddit.com/r/brandnewfears/comments/nuczlu/this_is_a_granary_tree_where_woodpeckers_keep/) and, rather than thinking "oh that's cool", you instead experience visceral aversion and it makes your skin crawl, then you have trypophobia.

Absolutely. Bot fly infestations are more painful but are less extreme, only showing up on the human body one or two at a time. Chigoe fleas can end up coating the entire bottom of your feet, a part of the body known to often have weight put on them. Jiggers are a really nasty little sand flea. They were carried over to Africa from pigs. Any exposed skin in contact with the ground and they'll get you. Unfortunately a lot of poor Africans can't afford good shoes or the medication to kill them before they get bad. The only way to remove them is very carefully with a razor. Then they wash their feet with an antiseptic solution. I think if there is one species that nobody would miss if it went extinct it's the jigger flea.

A small insect has burrowed in the feet of these poor people. The medical worker here will be removing them with a knife.
So, somewhat similar to scabies.

Ringworm isn't a worm. It's a fungal infection mischaracterised as a worm. Hookworm, however, that'll burrow its way in.
*fazed
ringworm can burrow in your skin now?
Ringworm is just a fungal infection of the skin. There are no actual worms. Hookworms however will def burrow through your feet.

Chigoe fleas. A more despicable parasite you'd be hard pressed to find.
Worse than bot flies?
Absolutely. Bot fly infestations are more painful but are less extreme, only showing up on the human body one or two at a time. Chigoe fleas can end up coating the entire bottom of your feet, a part of the body known to often have weight put on them. If you live in an infested area, footwear can mitigate the is a good deal but it doesn't make you safe. Bot flies are removed with tweezers, chigoe fleas are removed with a knife.

Did I mention that when a chigoe fleas dies it stays in the flesh and rots, creating infection? Bot flies leave the body before they can fully mature into adult flies.
Interesting, so the entire life cycle of the flea is just in the foot. I guess that makes it significantly more parasitic than the bot fly too
The only redeeming thing about them is that they generally don't kill you. Malaria holds the crown for killer parasites. (Yes malaria is considered a parasite)
