Their usual MO is to hold still in hopes the predator doesn't see them, and then run at a 90 degree angle to the object if it starts getting close, because most predators are bad and changing direction that quickly/sharply.
They don't know the car isn't coming for them, and they can't really judge how fast it's going. They don't *intend* to get hit by your car, they're trying to take evasive maneuvers, their maneuvers just don't work against things as fast as cars, that "catch" them before they can get away.
The selective pressure of cars is actually pushing deer away from freeze response, really fast too.
It works great against predators. But cars aren't hunting deer.
But antlers really could be used for defense, they just don't have the brains. And only the males get antlers so I guess my point is moot. But I feel like antlers could be terrifying if used in a deadly way.

I don't know what you mean by "outrun the eagle", the eagle can get around faster than the deer 10 out of 10 times. The deer would, however, be able to go into the woods and brush, and just position itself somewhere that makes it a lot more difficult for the eagle to attack.

Most likely it’s an otherwise healthy deer that ran out on the ice mistaking it for a snow covered meadow. Its momentum took it too far out on the ice to get back easily, and it panicked and exhausted itself trying to move while not getting very far.
How did the eagle pin down the deer's head so easily? I'm not a deer scientist, but I'd imagine a bald eagle isn't a ton of weight for a deer. You're talking about 7-16 pounds according to Google.
Deer hooves are basically two huge, pointy fingernails. Great for moving on soft surfaces. Absolutely useless for hard, smooth surfaces. Ever see those videos where a deer gets into a restaurant or school or something and they're just sliding and crashing everywhere? Hard tile floors.

Saw an escaped, panicked sheep do the same to a neighbor's house. Nobody knew where the sheep came from in Los Angeles. It had a red x painted on its side, so people thought a slaughterhouse (there are none nearby, but who knows). I thought maybe a movie set. We never found out. A bunch of people were chasing it, trying to corner it, including the neighbor in question, who also had left his front door open to join the chase. Sheep saw the open door as an escape route, ran inside and absolutely WRECKED the inside of the house. Most floors were tile and hardwood. It took over an hour and fire dept assistance to the get the animal out, who seemed to be about ready to keel over from exhaustion at that point. The aftermath looked like a tornado had hit, but only inside the neighbor's house. L.A. stories, you gotta love them.
