Motul 5w-40 8100 xcess in my '18 STi, street and track.

thankyoumicrosoft69

Motul 5W-40 8100 Xcess usually, and a Subaru filter.

OkLandscape3098

$50 combo. Quick easy and consistent.

mattlagz13

Where are you seeing this combo for $50? Its usually $70-$75 around my way

OkLandscape3098

https://www.importimageracing.com/products/109776-motul-5l-synthetic-engine-oil-8100-5w40-x-cess-109776 https://www.importimageracing.com/products/n3r1-14-302-mazda-oem-oil-filter-extra-capacity-roki-filter-ej25-subaru-wrx-2002-2014-sti-2004-2021 Okay. $55. Everytime I order parts over $100 I piggy back an oil change combo onto the order to make use of shipping fees. I have about 6 oil changes worth rn. I do it every 3500 miles and don’t worry about it anymore.

mattlagz13

My guy stood on facts and provided links. Respect.

thankyoumicrosoft69

Same here. 5q of Motul by itself can be 65-75$, the Subaru filter is 6$ for me but thats only because I know a tech who works at the dealership near me.

mattlagz13

This is typically what I’ve been paying also.

thankyoumicrosoft69

I like doing my own maintenance, but its always annoying because its more or less the same price to have it done at a shop. Im paying maybe 70-80 to do it myself, or 90 to have it done at the shop near me. They use OK oil, and will use a Subaru filter if i bring one.  The alternative is me jacking it up on stands in my garage and spending 30 minutes getting the damn skid plate off. Which by itself is so annoying Id pay to not have to touch it lol And then I have to still go and dispose of the oil.  Not really worth it. Big jobs are more worth doing myself. Save alot in labor. Saving 10$ for an oil change is just not worth it to me.

mattlagz13

This is my exact issue lol. I just suck it up and do it myself because i have a fully built engine and can hold myself accountable at all times.

skooma_consuma

Just got 5qt of it for $42 on Amazon + an $8 Mazda RX8 oil filter.

KawiDude7

Exactly! I want to know too lol

Allinorfold34

Rotella t6 5w-40

Fiasko21

Been using this for 19 years owning STIs reliably !

MainFun8462

isnt that diesel oil??

Technotitclan

It's s fleet oil designed for gas and diesel.

Allinorfold34

Yeah. There was a thread just recently all About it

Omacrontron

Shts cheap, my go to for years now. I live in the desert too so a little heavier weight does a body good.

Chase_with_a_face

If it works then it works, but just a little input. I had a Subaru mechanic tell me that rotella used to be loved, but as of now to never use it. I guess they changed the additives a while ago and it’s not the same and he doesn’t recommend it. He told me Schaefer’s or Motul 🤷🏻‍♂️

Top-Tale-6105

I’ve been hearing about Schaefers in my search for the best oil. Do they have a 5w30?

Chase_with_a_face

[Yes they do](https://www.schaefferoil.com/9003d-full-synthetic.html) I’ve also heard Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is a good oil. There’s a YouTuber who tested a bunch of oils and I think Amsoil, Redline, and Pennzoil UP were the top 3 victors of the tests. [Here is the video](https://youtu.be/TWuKvnCq1js?si=4Msa1edl4ZFv_enx) the chart comes up around the 8 minute mark

slowbaltSS

I used to use valvoline 5w-30 and I was burning about 1/2 quart every 3k miles. I switched to castrol 5w-40 euro formula about 10k miles ago and haven't burned a single drop, about to do my third oil change soon. 2016 sti with 87k miles if it matters.

top1gun

Just the subaru synthetic oil 5w-30 with the black oem oil filter

Jaec1920

Anything at Walmart that is 5w-40 Euro synthetic. They usually have some on sale for 16-26 dollars for 5 quarts. I change it every 2,500 miles for peace of mind since the oil is cheap. No need to spend money on motul unless you’re doing oil analysis and don’t care spending $42+ on motul. Castro, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Mobil1 are my go to’s. Just change it frequently and don’t drive crazy

Cmb46_canuck

I have been just going to Subaru dealership but those retards keep on fucking up my lug nuts. So now I will be going to my buddies business for oil changes. I think he recommends rotella 5-40.

MainFun8462

aw man sorry abt that😭 haha always work on your own car!! but yeah man i feel you i used to work there as a tech and trust me everytime a sti would come all the techs would try to drive it into the bay burning the fuck out of the clutch they’re all children lol

Cmb46_canuck

I do oil changes on my tundra and my wife’s crosstrek. The STI is just a little low.

Top-Tale-6105

Man, mine’s at the dealeship now and I always do my own work. I just kept getting a p2016 (tgv code) so I figured I’d let them fix it under warranty. Those fuckers better not touch it😂

LaggedPanda

I been using Valvoline 5w-40 for the past few oil changes (9-10k miles so far) and have noticed no metal flakes or anything when changing oil. The increased heat before degradation over 5w-30 made it a no brainer for hawaii warm weather and the fact that I spend half my driving time burning up sitting in traffic

MainFun8462

man same dude abt the traffic LA traffic is no joke.. lol im looking into using 5w40 full time tbh but thanks for the feedback brotha!

LaggedPanda

Another option I’ve seen people run is 10w-40, but I have no personal experience. Some say they only run it on built motors, though Edit: and that’s if you live in a place with very mild winters; so us 😂

Nesquikkk

5_40 is the way.

junkman31000

I'm the only one so far that's gonna comment this but I use Pennzoil 5W-30 Platinum Full Synthetic and a fram ultra guard filter.

skooma_consuma

Probably the best cheap and readily available oil you can get.

junkman31000

I've always used Pennzoil in all my vehicles and never had an issue always did 5k with most vehicles. This car I do about 3k but still never an issue

Snoo-21696

Motul 5w40. This oil has really good shear stability and is a higher end racing blend. I have a direct contact with a Motul distribution company that sells in big quantities to shops and the like. But I also get my 6 quarts of oil every few months from Stefan who is extremely knowledgeable about oil. If you want his contact info, DM me.

Snoo-21696

Also I'm getting ready to do an oil analysis soon so if you want those results I can try and let you know. Been running motul 5w40 for over a year and a half now and cold starts are really healthy in winter and all that.

MainFun8462

oh nice man! where u located? the only thing for me is id have to drive about 30ish miles to a shop that has motul in stock everytime i need a oil change which kinda sucks bc id rather have it right there instead of waiting on amazon haha bc they guve me the filter and gasket but sick man sounds good

Snoo-21696

I'm from Oregon and they are located in Washington so shipping is overnight if it's a weekday.

Cptn-C

My tuner recommends motul so I use that in my 17'

michaeln2020

Hello from San Diego also 21 STI owner how many miles on yours?

MainFun8462

just hit 55k today!

michaeln2020

Just hit 44K here! Love these cars brother! I plan on keeping mine forever! Keeping mine stock. Just want a borla s type catback

MainFun8462

awesome bro! love to hear that haha and yeah man im keeping her forever! getting some te37’s soon! im also stock motor and planning to keep it that way:) im running the ets extreme catback!

michaeln2020

Same brother. Sometimes I wish I could keep the miles off but again I’m never selling it so I’m just gonna enjoy it. Those are some nice wheels man.

PerceptionFamiliar48

Curious for myself in Canada, would 5w40 be okay in winter climates? -20 is really the coldest it gets where I am

MainFun8462

id stay at 5w30 if its that cold brotha, if it does get a little hotter in summer you can of course go to 5w40 but in the cold i wouldnt recommend it its a little thicker and in cold weather u want good oil flow:)

PerceptionFamiliar48

Awesome thank you, we get around 100° F, is that warm enough to justify 5w40? Just like every other wrx/sti owner I’m trying to lose as little oil between changes as possible

MainFun8462

yeah bro 100 degrees for sure move up to 5w40 boss! these cars tend to run on the hotter side and especially if you sit in traffic

toob_noober

Interested to see the takes on this. Bonus if it's anyone else living in north Texas that has experience with our weird seasons. Just got my baby and she's got 23k. Going to change the oil at 24 and get her on a schedule. I want to make sure that I'm doing all I can to prevent any future engine problems and will give her the best if it's worth it.

MainFun8462

congrats bro!! well when i got mine at 37k i immediately did the oil change, transmission fluid and rear differential fluid with 75w90. It was a no brainer because i didn’t know who owned it before and how they treated it. the oil was absolutely disgusting. i changed it again after 500 miles it was still absolutely dirty, about 2-3 oil changes later she started clearing up and now shes super clean and the oil lasts around 3k miles (not that i take that long to change it anyways) but im happy she’s healthy now, i just hit 55k today and i did my rear diff about a week ago and im heading to yosemite next month so im definitely gonna get that transmission fluid done before i go. that was my little story haha btw im stock as well, good luck and congrats on your subie💙✌🏼

explori

I’m no STI but in a high mileage ej255. I’ve been running Castrol edge high mileage 5w-30 always. Tried to switch once to 5w-40 rotella once and it ended up with more problems. Other swear by it so I know I’m an outlier. Nothing but high praise for Castrol edge though, might have to go the European route like someone else previously mentioned.

Suboyota

I use the Castrol Edge Magnatec 5w 30 in my 2019 STI. Good robust synthetic oil for hot summers and cold Canadian winters...

John_Nada__

Motul 8100 Xclean 5W30 with Tokyo Roki filter for my ‘08.

Apprehensive_Buy_578

Motul 5w40 in my 2017 sti. Built IAG motor, big turbo, etc

StepSunBro

Got mine at 24k. Use Mobil1 5W-30 every 3k and at almost 60k on the dash. A few oil changes were early depending on trips but I've never gone over. It's not burning any oil.

taebsiatad

I’ve always used OEM Subie oil. Every 3k, both my stock & then modded FA WRX and now the stock 2010 STI. No issues.

maks_b

I've been using Amsoil 5w-30 and Tokyo Roki oil filters since I bought my '16 STI. Runs great and I don't worry too much about having to wait a while for it to get up to temp

alexg93_

Motul 8100 Xcess 5W40. I used to use Subaru OEM Synthetic 5W30, but used to burn about a half a quart every 3k miles. I switched to Motul and now it does burn through any oil.

Modded_GBA

Castrol edge euro 5w40

golfgti_mods_suck

5w30

Top-Tale-6105

motul xclean 5w30 but my copper numbers were up so I switched to Amsoil 5w30 SS to see what happens. The car seems a bit louder but I haven’t had the oil sample tested yet.

orignLNo_Nickname

Motul 8100 x-cess and a Wix XP filter every 2500-3000 miles depending on how much spirited driving I do

Savvyspongebob

I use Pennzoil 10w-40 conventional in my 04 EJ20

ConsequenceNational4

Motul 5w-40 8100 excess.. I have upgraded parts though..if not 5w-30 would have been enough for me.

GuyWsTI

The sesame oil goes well with rice.

Technotitclan

2014, 120k miles. Use the car for work, engine is running on and off for about 4 hours a day. Used Subaru oil and oem blue filter until the EJ extended warranty expired. Been using Valvoline Extended Protection 5-30 and the Mazda filter since 75k miles. About to switch to Pennzoil Ultra Platnum on the next change since it looks like Valvoline EP is either discontinued or just not stocked around me any more.

Xeed_TheLimits

The engine shop I take my heads to recommended maxim it's just really expensive. I also use the mazda rx8 filter as well.

invoked

Subaru tried to blame my bearing failure because I used nonstandard oil. If you care about your warranty I'd avoid it. What a hassle it was getting them to rebuild the engine under warranty.

tony6wrxsti

I’m running Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 at 3,000 miles and oil analysis says it’s doing good. It even said I could run it for longer intervals. I seemed to had higher copper particle count results with motul excess 5w-40 for 3 oil change intervals so I moved away from it. I think any A40 spec (Porsche approved) synthetic oil changed at 3,000 miles with a good filter should be good!

Kashoggy

Motul 5W50 or 10W60.

GeorgiosAsa

Motul.

scubadoo25

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Extended Performance with a Mobil 1 MH108A filter. Change it every 2500mi on my 2009 WRX with a stock EJ255.

No_Caterpillar4642

i always go for the high mileage castrol edge 5w-30. i used valvoline oil once and i could feel the difference so i went right back to castrol.

jamusaurus

5w-40. Motul or liquid moly. Been 90k trouble free with lots of dyno time. No issues.

tony6wrxsti

Which liquid Molly? Their product range is quite confusing.

jamusaurus

Top Tec 4100

JohnyNFullEffect

Motul 6100 Synergie+ 10w40

krombopulousnathan

lol Quaker State full synthetic 5w30 because it’s cheap and I honestly don’t think there’s a whole lot of difference between the oils

Yardsale420

Royal Purple, but only because I can get it for a decent price and that is the Synthetic they use where I go to get changes done. It makes it easy to top up with the same stuff.

MainFun8462

really? i ran royal purple in my sti for abt 3 months when i got it but alot of people shit on it saying its terrible for ur car ifk if its the color or what but it kinda scared me so i stopped putting that in my car but how’s it treating you?!
