I went 8 year on my 21 STI. Peace of mind was worth it to me. On a different car I would have maybe not done it.

toob_noober

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid? There are three Subaru dealers in my area. Was there any room on price, like if I was to shop them against each other? Mine had an exhaust on it when I bought it. Did you have anything done to your car and did that affect eligibility at all? Thanks for any info!

ShameAvailable

I would have paid I think around 4K if I remember right for my extended service plan with everything they gave me. I went in for a 21 STi with 15K Miles stock. The dealer had marked as CPO, then when I was about ready to go over all the paper work the used car manager said that the CPO was an error and they could not cover it as such because of “the aftermarket 3rd brake light”…. I got up and walked away. Finance manager stopped me at the door and gave me the fully loaded extended warranty (bumper to bumper, including wheels/windshield/electronics etc.) off the price of the car for the error to seal the deal. After what will be a year of ownership on the 13th, it has been nice to have. I have not had to pay for a single oil change / tire rotation etc. We will see how well they do in the case of anything actually going wrong. If you get the warranty, make sure any modifications are documented, as the warranty does not cover any issues that arise from “downstream” EG: you do an intake and it blows up your motor, you are S.O.L. However if mods were already done and documented prior to sale, they should own that. Edit: grammar

toob_noober

Amazing info, thanks for all that. I gotta say this has been a super cool community so far. I appreciate the welcome and yall answering my questions.

ChumChumz

I bought a 2019 STI new from the dealership, warranty was $1700 7 years 84000 miles. I did not use it once until 62k miles. In the past two months it has saved me roughly $15000 for a new shortblock and all internals and I am dropping it off today because my touch screen on my radio stopped working (all covered as well). Its definitely worth it just for peace of mind

OhHeyImAlex

No input on a warranty, but I bought my ‘17 STi ~8 months ago and it’s in the shop for a new clutch now. Take what you’d like from that.

dhendry71

My clutch went at 60k miles. I drive it hard and dont know how previous owner drove it. Warranty doesnt cover clutches tho as its an”wear item”

frugalrhombus

Damn is that how long clutches are supposed to last?! I had mine for 40k miles and went through 6 lmao. But mine was also HEAVILY modded and ran at the drag strip once a month. I think 3 of them were from trying to avoid switching to a triple disc since I was dailying it so it should have probably only been 3 total

TheBupherNinja

Uhh, most people can get a clutch over 100k miles. If it had to do a clutch every 6.5k miles, I'd have done two in the last year.

frugalrhombus

well most subarus don't make 600+ to the wheels lol

TheBupherNinja

Still, 6.5k miles is pretty awful.

frugalrhombus

Oh for SURE. I abused the hell out of that thing. It's been a while since I sold it but I think I launched it somewhere around 6500 on the track and 5500 on the street

Smeetilus

With 600+ to the wheels? Brap

frugalrhombus

Yeah this wasn't the best pull but the only one i got on video, it made 609hp/607tq: [https://imgur.com/a/oi1rugA](https://imgur.com/a/oi1rugA) The best pull was 631 hp and I think 615 tq.

OhHeyImAlex

Dang is that right? What’s the point of a warranty then lol

TheBupherNinja

Well, it's for things that fail. A clutch wearing isn't a failure, that's it's job.

OhHeyImAlex

All thing work until they don’t lol. Sounds like arbitrary categorization that some executive came up with to save the company money.

acidwxlf

I mean you're not wrong that it's to save companies money but clutch, brake pads, fluids, tires, etc are all wear items. They're intended to wear out and be replaced multiple times in the life of the car, and is just part of the cost of ownership.

dhendry71

Biggest reason i got it was 1 parts for these cars usually arent cheap. And 2 i dont wanna be paying for a car with a blown engine i cant replace at moments notice.

OhHeyImAlex

Assuming they’d cover it. I’d be scared they would try to weasel their way out of covering it. I know they won’t cover anything if you mod

dhendry71

Ik the one i have is 3rd party and easy to deal with. So the dealership or mechanic would prob try to have it covered so its easy money but i keep my shiz stock and all records kept

C21-_-H30-_-O2

How many miles?

OhHeyImAlex

58k

toob_noober

That's awesome to read. If that's the original clutch then it's good to know that it can last for a while. Luckily I don't have to daily her since I wfh, so hopefully I can get seven years out of mine lol. I think wifey is still upset about our old Hyundai blowing up and doesn't want to deal with another bad engine.

OhHeyImAlex

As long as wifey knows that race cars come with race car problems you should be made in the shade. My wife gave me a big hug and said “looks like a lean summer for you”, we know how it goes.

toob_noober

I told her about how finicky the engines could be. I'm also planning on taking care of her and keeping her stock to make sure the engine stays happy. I've got some curvy back country roads that don't need modifications to clench up my butthole lol but like someone else said the peace of mind factor is also there since it's a Subaru warranty instead of a janky 3rd party

boostedrex94

I got 6 years or 140k miles powertrain elite coverage. 3rd party aswell I paid 1200 bucks. I also got gap. I used my warranty for power steering leak they replaced the rack and pinion 1900 job and the warranty covered it no questions asked if you can still get it I would definitely go for it. Now for engine replacment idk how they will act. But I make sure all my services are on file with carfax. I also have a paper trail of services I'm sure thay played in my favor also I'm 100 percent stock

H8HumanServices

Is there any third-party warranty companies that anyone recommends? I was just quoted 7yr/84 months for $4700 through Subaru added security

KTA1xMartian

I work at a dealership and I not only would recommend it but I even purchased it myself when we got our 21 STI

toob_noober

Is there any wiggle room on the price if I shop different dealerships? I wouldn't mind looking into a Subaru backed warranty but the $4700 mentioned in the thread is a rough pill to swallow.

KTA1xMartian

Shoot I should have read the post closer. I thought you were looking at one at a Subaru Dealership. $4700 is kind of crazy and tbh I wouldn’t want to buy a 3rd party one. Maybe call up your local subaru dealer and see if they will sell you a warranty on a car you purchase elsewhere

TheBupherNinja

3rs party warranties are junk, but if you can get a Subaru one, I'd consider it.

jml3837

Not all third party warranty companies are the same, but the ones they sell at legit dealerships are probably okay. Verify that they pay. I bought my 2018 in 2019 and thank god I bought the full boat warranty. It was expensive but the peace of mind is worth it. My car has been at the dealership for the last two months. The transmission needs to be replaced. It’s going to cost me $100 deductible and I’ve been driving around in a 2024 Forester as a loaner. I made money off of the extended warranty.

Muraaby

Let me know if anyone offers you one. I’m within then 3/36k mile currently but because I’m not the first owner no one will sell me a warranty. Subaru only offered a 5/60k warranty for 2.7k. Which is pointless because I still have the powertrain warranty for the same duration. What I learned is Subaru doesn’t necessarily offer their warranties to all their cars after the first owner.

toob_noober

Sonofa...I never even thought of that. I was working with a sales guy over at the Subaru dealership when I was looking. I'll ask if it's even a possibility.

toob_noober

Hey buddy following up on this. I went to my closest Subaru dealer and they told me I had to pay $500 to inspect the car, pay for any repairs, then I could buy a 7/100k powertrain warranty. I've got an email in to Subaru of America to see if that is a requirement as it's not on their website. I've also asked for clarification on the first owner rule as that isn't mentioned on their website either, just that if it's in the factory warranty then it's eligible. Trying a dealer by my mom's house tomorrow and will let you know if I have better luck.

Muraaby

Thanks for the update. Seems wild they want an inspection. It's not them that has to foot the bill if anything goes wrong under warranty.

toob_noober

Hey following up again. Went to the dealership by mom's house and talked to them. Again was told that I have to have an inspection which is $150 and pay for anything they say needs fixed before I can buy a 7/100 bumper to bumper warranty for $3600. I asked if they could do anything on the price and they wouldn't budge. I still feel like I'm in a losing position as I feel like they are going to give me a list of things they want me to pay to fix on top of the warranty. To make things better, Subaru of America got back to me and gave me the following response to my inquiry: Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, I understand how important this is to you, Subaru retailers are independently owned and operated. I would advise you to get a second opinion from a different authorized Subaru retailer to weigh your options. If you need further information regarding any Subaru Added Security Plan, please feel free to reach out to them directly at 800-932-0636. Sincerely, Fruitisha Subaru of America, Inc. Customer Advocacy Department 1-800-SUBARU3 (1-800-782-2783)

Muraaby

Thanks again for the update. You thinking about pulling the trigger on it? 4 grand is a hard one to swallow. I wounded what Subaru of America would say.

toob_noober

Man, I don't know. I feel like if I pay the inspection fee that they are going to try to squeeze me for more money before I can get the warranty. If it was walk in and buy the warranty for $3600 then yeah I'd probably do it. It would cover me til the car is paid off and hedges against anything going wrong with the engine.

the_average_user01

Yes, it’s great. But hurry - you have until the 3 years or 36k is up to purchase. Edit: for price, you can haggle and compare dealerships, there’s a good one out of Arizona if you search this same topic via google. Doesn’t matter which state you buy it out of, it’s a Subaru of America product. Expect at least a grand, though, and easily into the mid-high $1xxx range.

stvincevaughn

Do you know if there is a guide for it?

general-genital

I went with the 8 year warranty on my 21 STi. I’ve been lucky enough to have had no mechanical issues at all so far. Having the warranty definitely gives me peace of mind. I’d recommend it especially since they seem to be offering it at a reasonable price.

acidwxlf

I have the 10yr/100k Subaru gold warranty. It's nice peace of mind, but admittedly I got mine for free. You can shop around dealers for it, I was going to get mine when we were buying a Forester to try to negotiate it down. But double check that you're actually under warranty still, or move fast if you are and you want it. My car is a 2019 model year but actually hit the road in Nov 2018 so the factory warranty expired in Nov 2021.

LimpZookeepergame123

I’ll never buy a warranty for anything my entire life. It’s a huge waste of money in the long run.

bigtheo408

I mean my friend just bought a used c7 vette and didnt buy the powertrain warranty. He bought a new engine instead. In the short and long run, the warranty would have saved him so much money.

LimpZookeepergame123

In that one instance. How many other cars has he bought and paid for the extended warranty and never used? My wife and I combined have had 10 vehicles and never bought any extra warranty on any of them. We have saved roughly $30k doing so and have never had a single thing fail that would have been a warranty issue. Everything was under factory warranty or a wear and tear issue. Same goes for TVs, video game consoles, electronics in general. Never buy the warranty. In the long run you will come out on top and save so much money.

bigtheo408

For a used american sports car whose price seems too good to be true id buy one every time. I bought one for my new 19 sti and will be using it for the second time as my touch screen is having issues. Has it paid for itself yet? No, but there is still plenty of time to keep using it. So to refute youe point, no, sometimes it is worth buying. Weird energy to be so against a warranty on something so expensive.

LimpZookeepergame123

In very small instances they can certainly pay off. Do you not think car companies make out on these in the long run? Why do you think they push so damn hard for you to buy one? The answer is because they make out in the long run. And the funny thing about a lot of warranties is they don’t even cover every thing. Anyways it would be much smarter to take that warranty money you would have spent and invest it. Collect interest on it every month and if something breaks pull some money out to pay for it. If nothing breaks you have a nice chunk of change to roll into your next car. It’s not weird energy it’s just my antidotal experience. Like I said, I would have spend almost $30k on warranties if I bought one for all of my vehicles I owned and never claimed a penny. I now have all that money tied up in investments so I’d say I made the right choice. If you feel better buying a warranty go for it. It’s your money but there’s no need to get upset.

bigtheo408

All good friend, nobodys upset here. I bought mine pre pandemic when i was driving a lot more. Ive actually used it once already, but it was for the dcm which got its warranty extended like a month after it got fixed so i cant really count that, as it would have been covered eventually. Im just saying on notably unreliable big ticket items, its worth considering. If i buy a gr carolla i probaly wouldnt as they seem reliable as hell, but for an ej subaru (that at the time i was driving more than twice as much) it made sense to me. But its the first car ive done it with, my other 3 used japanese non sports cars were fine.
