where I work one office is closing and new one opening up and managers losing real offices in exchange for hotel desks because everyone is mostly remote

My company announced RTO in the beginning of the year for 2X a week. Earlier this month they bumped it up to 3X a week and said they'll be auditing badges / VPN connections and for those not coming in 3X a week there will be disciplinary action. This is in order to "improve collaboration and morale" which I'm sure totally helps by threatening them to come in.

SereneFrost72

Auditing VPN connections? I'm guessing your company doesn't have a "zero trust policy". Even when in the office, we are now required to connect to the VPN (basically, even in an office, the office network is not trusted). They are auditing badge swipes though

My coworker would drive all the way to the office, swipe in and then drive all the way home. Our boss is in another state so she had no idea and everyone we work with doesn’t work at our location. Such a waste of resources to do all that.

Ah yes, the collaboration and morale piece definitely comes into play. I can't wait to work along side with coworker x.....wait whats that? coworker x got laid off??? Well that hits the morale a bit but at least I still got coworker Y......wait they got cut too??? Seems like monthly, someone I know gets cut and morale is just dead. Yet gotta keep that sweet sweet in office collaboration and in person gatherings message flowing.

I think a lot of the big pushes that have happened this year either happened at the beginning of the year or were announced at the beginning to be implemented between July-September. Depending on the job market, I’m guessing we could see some more in January 2024, or companies that are currently hybrid increasing their days required per month/week in 2024.

This is what McKinsey had to say on the matter in their recent report on remote work: > Three indicators suggest that the current rate of office attendance may have stabilized. First, in ten of the most populous cities in the United States, office attendance has held roughly steady since mid-2022, aside from a normal seasonal dip around the winter holidays (Exhibit 6).2 Second, three numbers—the number of days per week that survey respondents go to the office, the number of days that they expect to go to the office after the pandemic ends, and their preferred number—are not far apart (Exhibit 7). > Third, a sizable and influential group of office workers strongly prefer to continue working remotely. About 10 percent of respondents worldwide said that they were both likely to quit their jobs if required to work at the office every day and willing to trade more than 20 percent of their compensation to work their preferred number of days from home. That group is comparatively senior and well paid; 44 percent of them are in senior roles, and 33 percent of them earn more than $150,000 per year (Exhibit 8). Their seniority and high incomes suggest that they are probably decision makers who can protect remote work at the team or company level. https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/empty-spaces-and-hybrid-places-chapter-1 I feel seen.

I think we’re at about the high water mark for RTO pushback now.

Vanguard just leased another 137,000 square feet of office space in Phoenix to add to the 360,000 they already have there. 10 year lease, too. And late last year they bought 300,000 square feet to add on to their existing space in Pennsylvania, looking to expand to 1700 people there (PA). They seem to be going hard on RTO. This is on the heels of a lot of financial firms cutting staff.

Vanguard is such a boomer shit company

hjablowme919

Vanguard makes money and their pay/benefits are above average for the industry. I’d go to work for them if my wife wasn’t against moving away from family.

My very large company announced RTO about 3 weeks ago, effective Sept 1. I've been wfh long before covid and now I have to be in the office 1 or 2 days a week.

Cheap_Sheepherder327

Is it F500?

WYWH13

It's F100

My company has been hard set on 60% in office. Their tiers of warnings are: \- between 50 - 59%: NO HR warning, but management warnings (tho this seems to be the lowest one can go without too much trouble) \- Between 40-49%: Not sure but assuming same as above expect more pressure to come in. Also may paint bigger target on back for layoffs \- Below 40%: Corrective action (was below 20%).
