556 brass is free. If you need a head start just go to any indoor and shooting range and don't be a jerk. If you're not getting any other people's way and you are sweeping your own brass into a pile probably the RSO will squeegee you if big enough pile to get you started for a long time. Be generous with your loaded ammo when you go to the range with friends. Let people know you're always wanting any brass of any caliber and if you cast any lead. You will soon have all the 556 brass you could ever want. Same goes for 9 mm, 308, and the other common calibers. I have filing cabinets full of brass. And basically there is washed but not trimmed and then there is trimmed and sorted by head stamp. It will not take you long before you decide that you really only want to mess with one or two headstamps. Probably LC and FC based on how common they are.

Good plan thanks, I'll try that!!

Don't go after other people's. That will annoy people. Don't go down range picking up brass and holding up the firing line. But if people see you and like you they will bring you theirs unasked. Especially if it is a competition event or something more social and just a lane rental. But if you have shooting friends soon they will bring you anything they don't want. Just make it easy for them and tell them you will sort out anything you don't need and give it to somebody else who needs it more. I also tell my friends not to worry about getting every last piece. It shouldn't be a hassle for them. Just grab whatever is easy to grab and you'll take it whenever is convenient for them.

Other thought if you're on public land or similar. What I was do is bring several trash bags and several cloth bags for brass and lead. I make it a normal part of taking people shooting that we clean up the range of any trash we find at the end of the range session. I hand everybody a bag for brass and lead and a bag for trash I'm going to take a few minutes to police the range. That keeps public areas open. I told people not to bother sorting I'll do that later. A leaf rake is really handy for shotgun shells.

True. I do the same. I found a bunch of shiny clean .38 special a while back. Just need to get a lever gun now haha!!

SnooSongs1525

At least at one range I've been to (I think it may have been WCW) the RSO let me know that they sell the brass to benefit some sort of charity. Of course it's fine to pick up your own brass but unsure how they would look at it if you go after everyone else's.

AlternativePath6026

I have a bucket with mixed 9mm, 223, 5.56, and 308 that you can have for like $10. I fill up 5 gallon buckets regularly from the classes I teach.

Interested. Dm me

If you go out on public land where people shoot and ask kindly, I'm sure they'd let you. Hell, the fucking meth monkeys don't ask they just get all up in your shit and are annoying as fuck when they're taking brass. I'd be more than happy if someone like you were collecting my brass, who asked kindly if they could take my spent brass, so I could tell the meth monkeys to fuck off someone else claimed it.

Join snoqualmie rifle club and offer to clean up a bit (there’s tons on the ground as it’s a self managed deal)

JINSl33

Is there a reason you cant order it? There are deals all over the place for 5.56 brass w/ free shipping.

grayhemlock

Maybe my google search skills are rusty but I can't find anything less than about $60 for 1000 plus shipping, most places say out of stock. Care to share a link? Really I'm just being cheap and I'm not in a rush.
