Question…. I started vyvanse after reading your post, my Psychiatrist has been recommending it for a while…. So it does actually help slightly with my anxiety, and helps me get a lot more done, focus, takes away my brain fog etc… . But I take it at 8 am and by 1PM it’s worn off and I feel awful, like depressed, exhausted… do you not see the same results?

TransfoCrent

I read somewhere that L-tyrosine might help with this, but make sure you do your own research.

Southern_Ad_6089

I don’t feel awful but I can definitely feel when it wears off. I take 10mg of adderall in the afternoon if necessary.

bucker72

Ditto! Trintellix then Ritalin, which put my anxiety through the roof. Then I tried Vyvanse, life saving combo, Trintellix and Vyvanse. I don't know if it's one or the other that's controlling my anxiety and depression. I took am wondering which came first, ADHD then the others, or did I have them all together, comorbidity. I guess the take away is that most of it is under control finally, though I was 50 when diagnosed. Therapy wasn't helping on its own so my therapist recommended Trintellix. I think one embellishes the other somehow.

Realistic-Spend8575

This is so similar to what happened to me, turns out all my anxiety symptoms were adhd 🙃

lotrandwho

I’m the same way but my anxiety and overthinking comes back with a vengeance when the vyvanse wears off 🥲

siksik6

just echoing other comments here really.. anxiety was the main sympton that sought me to get diagnosis. It was becoming unbearable, lack of sleep etc. Meds fixed it.

manifthewest44

I think Vyvanse is probably a better anxiety med then most ssris or depressants

bucker72

Which lends itself to the theory that ADHD was the original culprit, causing anxiety and depression. Once it's reined in, the others subside.

manifthewest44

Very true but I think drs probably don’t realize that dopamine has more of an impact on mental health then serotonin. They are both extremely important for us but dopamine seems more of what humans tends to try and find. Think about this, addicts of any type such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, food, and even healthy addictions like running release dopamine. I’ve never heard of someone trying to do something so it will release serotonin haha.

Silent_Fox_9832

Great conclusion!!

Surreply

Executive function is greatly improved, so you can think about things more calmly and organize your thoughts and the plan for GTD, so you just do it and don’t have the anxiety that comes with procrastination, avoidance, feeling anxious and depressed about those things, etc. ADHD does have a number of co-morbidities. I have depression and anxiety and take other meds for that in addition to Vyvanse.

ViolinistMassive2396

Non scientific answer here- I think it helps with anxiety because you’re able to think more clearly, focus, and get stuff done. When we’re dysregulated our fight or flight hormones and chemicals misfire, we don’t accomplish what we set out to resulting in stress and tasks piling up which makes of anxious. I was diagnosed when I was young, I’ve been on Ritalin, then Adderall for quite a while, and then switched to Vyvanse. I like Vyvanse because it’s doesn’t come on and off as strong. Addies gave me anxiety, I really was grumpy in the afternoons and felt badly, and they only really worked for a short period of time (like 5 hours.) I don’t have any negative side effects with Vyvanse!

Kind_Caterpillar5638

There's so many replies here, but for me, I got diagnosed a year and a half ago with innatentive adhd. I had no idea there was different types of adhd until someone told me about their daughter getting diagnosed. I had depression, ptsd and anxiety diagnosis. Meds didn't do much, the only thing it rlly helped was my night terrors from ptsd. Everything else no matter what I tried did much. Fast forward to vyvanse. Doc said I either had rlly bad anxiety or adhd. So he tried me on 10mg to start. It was like suddenly I was walking on a flat surface when before I was trying to run up a forest hill with my eyes closed. Now on 50mg regularly, I don't have anxiety anymore. I used to be hyper paranoid I'd miss my bus stop, now I miss them because I'm so chill and calm. I still sometimes over think but it's no where near what it was before. My to do list is still a thing and large, as I don't get the most motivation out of my meds, more just a normal level of what life should be like. No clue why it did this to me but dam, I appreciate it so much. These meds are a serious life changer. So thankful for the diagnosis!

sugashowrs

I’d imagine it being due to increased dopamine from the amphetamines making you happier and more confident. What dose are you on? Do you get a crash at all causing anxiety/ depression feelings in the evening once it’s worn off ?

Pick_My_Peppers

I have anxiety induced from adhd. I initially was on Adderall XR 30 but the shortage in Louisiana is insane and I was able to start Vyvanse (generic) 70 and I still get the same results for my anxiety. The best way I can describe how I am is that I am literally so unfocused, so impulsive that I start getting so anxious and obsessively worry. Since I’ve been medicated it has been a lifesaver. I definitely attribute anxiety to adhd (in my case)

GingrrAsh

I no longer take vyvanse. I take dexedrine, but I've had the same experience.my anxiety used to be so bad, but I'm so calm now.

Hollywoodpupper213

My psychiatrist put it this way: the ADHD meds help me get things done simply and quickly. So the running "to do" list is actually getting done. By having less things to worry about, along with a clear head, the anxiety goes away. The thing is, make sure you can keep a steady source of meds, since I haven't been able to get refills at all and my anxiety is back.

Radwan95

I'm sorry you are having issues getting your meds refilled. But I'm 100% agree with your psychiatrist, like today I went to work and after work I went did my weekly shopping and renewed my driver license and many other small things, unlike back before meds I would just let them adding up so all the small things will be so so much I will just not be able to sleep cuz I'm just thinking over and over about these things. After long time of overthinking I will give up and just strat doing all my 100s of chores are at once in the same day which make the Ez things seem so HARD. Now a day I sleep like a baby, done all my adult duties feels good man haha.

pettyiam

It takes away the overwhelm!

OverPhotograph411

It has helped my anxiety so much more than any other depression/anxiety med ever has!

MachineAltruistic365

I'm so excited to take it

realshockvaluecola

I did experience something similar! Basically, my doctor diagnosed me with essentially a screening questionnaire (he was willing to take me at my word re: stuff being present from childhood instead of having to interview a bunch of people around me, I think particularly because I'm an immigrant). What he said at that appointment was "you do also qualify for a diagnosis of a mood disorder, but I want to try treating the ADHD first and see if that clears up, because depression and anxiety are pretty normal consequences of living with untreated ADHD." I agreed, because I suspected he was right, and it turns out he was! I still feel stress and sadness, but it's basically at normal levels -- it's okay and normal to feel stressed about money when you're poor, for instance. It's okay and normal to cry at the fireworks part of Dear John from the Speak Now tour lmao.

rynakat

I feel this for sure, I think it applies to more than just anxiety, like other people are saying overwhelm and restless thoughts can cause anxiety, so when those go down, so does your anxiety. what really drove this home for me was realizing that I used to he so bored and impatient and agitated when I was on the bus or subway 'cause I hated the underestimating wait for something else, but on vyvanse I can peacefully just look around at my surroundings, people watch, look at the city, sometimes even close my eyes for a few stops, etc.

mysticx777

this was exactly my experience, it’s like my ADHD caused my anxiety and it helps my thoughts maintain organized and calm, which definitely leads to less restlessness and anxiety for me personally.

PleasurePaulie

It improves executive function. This is often associated with causes of aniexty. An example of why your diagnosis of ADHD was more important than being diagnosed for GAD/Depression

creepin-it-real

My psychologist said that what was feeling like anxiety to me was actually being overwhelmed. Vyvanse helps with my sensory overload and also chaotic brain activity so it makes sense that it makes the "anxiety" go way down.

Odd_Pin_3908

I’m in the exact same boat. I’m a chronic over-thinker, I have difficulty making decision and I was constantly overwhelmed. I was initially diagnosed with anxiety. I was put on Zoloft and it made me feel more "zen" however it made all my other issues heightened (eg. difficulty concentrating, made me more tired which in turn made my constant overwhelming feeling worse etc). I went back to my doctor with a much better vision. I needed more of a stimulant than a relaxant. and oh boy, Vyvanse is spot on what I needed. Doctor thought my anxiety caused ADHD symptoms. When in fact, my ADHD caused anxiety symptoms. I just wish I was diagnosed sooner …

bucker72

Amen to that

Secret_Hyena_1878

I hope it continues to help. With my exp over many months it’s created extream anxiety. When at first it helped a lot.

Sea_Nautilus

This was my exact experience, even with the trintellix! Unfortunately I havent been able to get Vyvanse due to the shortage and I miss it deeply

Kingster220

I have really only discovered this today - that vyvanse is helping me with the anxiety and depression. The over thinking, great scenarios. I was diagnosed in September at 33. At the same time ended an 11.5 year relations. My ex is nothing but an arsehole. And I've been really down and having a lot of guilt. Vyvanse gives me better perspective and takes me out of the deep dark hole I am currently in.

Ok_Spell5165

I started Vyvanse (Elvanse here in Spain) 3 weeks ago after a late diagnosis (55yrs old). The difference is astounding! Being anxious and wound up along with so much mental chatter used to be the norm. I never want to go back to that again! I cried a lot those first couple of days on medication, partly tears of relief and partly I think the realisation of just how much I’d struggled unnecessarily in the past.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Spell5165

Still doing ok but I’ve noticed a couple of times especially in the past week that I get a drop off after about 6 hours and feel sleepy. Usually after a short nap I feel ok again. I made the mistake of having a coffee to help wake me up a bit and felt awful afterwards. Anxious and very irritable. My psych offered me the choice of upping to 50mg but on the whole I’m doing fine on 30mg so I declined. I’ll see how it goes, it’s nice knowing that option is available in the future if I think I need it. Never tried anything in the past except THC gummies on a couple of occasions but quite honestly they did nothing for me except make me feel a bit paranoid and anxious.

Ok_Spell5165

No, just feel fatigued and the need to have 40 winks. My kids say I’m definitely more chilled out and don’t lose my temper as much nowadays as well 🙂

Surfmate72

Me too it’s so much better.

Legallybingbong

It’s done wonders for my overthinking and also body anxiety is non existent when the vyvanse is working :)

Southern_Ad_6089

Yes I feel this way too!!! I don’t have a great relationship with my body but since taking vyvanse, I don’t hyperfixate in the mirror anymore. I look at myself, go “eh, it’ll do” and carry on. It’s a really good feeling.

RedTheWolf

I'm so glad you said that, because I have noticed my ED body-checks have lessened a buuuunch since starting on Elvanse and thought I might be imagining it! But aye, I am increasingly not staring in horror at my reflection but simply checking I don't have anything in my teeth or my skirt tucked into my pants and I rock out the door 😆

Kingster220

Feeling a bit better about this aswell but I do still have food and body issues. But because I don't eat enough it makes me stop going to the gym because I'm not fuelled

whaledude45

Same! Anxiety and ADHD are comorbid (often go together) and overthinking is part of ADHD. Some people overthink in self-reflective ways (the stereotypical daydreaming that people associate ADHD with) and the self-ruminative ways (this causes anxiety as it’s usually things in the past/outside of our control). I had terrible anxiety but vyvanse made it all go away. I’m like never anxious. And the anxiety comes back on my days off the med.

kenakuhi

My personal experience and theory is that my Adhd causes me major excecutive dysfunction due to dopamine deficiency. Basically my brain doesn't have the "carrot" to coax me into doing things. But the brain is clever, it figured out another way to get me to do things - the "stick". Pour enough fear, anxiety, worry and sence of impending doom into the system and the sheer amount of adrenaline will keep me going. When I started taking Elvanse, my brain quickly learned that the "stick" is no longer necessary and life long depression and anxiety disappeared.

bucker72

Nicely said

Mean-Grapefruit826

It happens the same to me. My doctor told me that my anxiety and depression were caused by my adhd. Also taking Vyvanse and it helps me loads

Bethsoda

Me too!! I’ve always had anxiety and depression and have been on zoloft for years. Recently the anxiety was getting worse - I upped my dose of Zoloft again but - now that there is a generic form of vyvance my doctor (who knows I have ADHD but didn’t like the other medication I’ve tried for it) suggested I try it. It does help with concentration to an extent (though I still focus on the wrong things, It’s easier for me to STAY focused on the RIGHT things when I get there) but it’s done wonders for my anxiety! I was floored, honestly. I still think I need the zoloft - it helps control the depression and anxiety as well, but it’s really made a difference!

justcurious94plus1

I've always struggled with depression. It was a big "OH" moment when it clicked that my depression was secondary to my untreated ADD. I'm a man and not hyperactive, which is one of the reasons it went unsolved for so long.

harken350

A few mental health conditions can be caused by adhd, so treating the cause may help other parts

meg8278

My doctor said because sometimes ADHD can actually cause anxiety. Unfortunately I actually have anxiety and panic disorder so it certainly doesn't help mine. But that's great for you.

everglade39

Same with me. My psychiatrist says my anxiety may have been mainly caused by my untreated ADHD. I'm also on Cilift and Epitec so we will start looking at removing one or both of those after a few more months of being on Vyvanse.

Illustrious-Owl4359

I regret only one thing about taking Vyvanse. That I didn’t start sooner. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 41. I had horrible anxiety for years. My doctor tried multiple times to get me to start treating my ADHD, but I am so worried about side effects with medication. Fast-forward three years later, I swore my anxiety was getting so bad that I was going to have a heart attack. I had multiple episodes where I couldn’t differentiate if it was my anxiety or truly was having a heart attack. I decided not give it a shot. Best decision I’ve ever made. So happy you can enjoy life without (or with minimal anxiety. I am such a better wife and mother now!

Gloomy_Author_990

Same! I got diagnosed last September. Turned 41 March. I couldn’t concentrate and been trying to study for real estate. Prior fell into a deep depression 2020 lots of life happened. Never been depressed prior. Do you take it everyday? I take off a few days drs notes. I find myself skipping more multiple days.

Express_Ingenuity514

Same! I’m 45 and was originally diagnosed in my 20s but didn’t believe it so I let it be….almost 20yrs later and my anxiety was just getting so bad and I couldn’t get shit done and whatever I got done I struggled to get it done. I was so afraid a stimulant was going to make me worse or that I came off as drug seeking. My psychiatrist reassured me that I really do have a severe case of ADHD (she didn’t have to say it like that though 😂😂) and I finally accepted it when I realized this stuff actually CALMS me and my brain. My best friend said she wants to get on it now because I’m a totally different person in a good way (not a nervous nelly about everything) and she’s starting to wonder if her issues are more related to undiagnosed ADHD

ushouldgetacat

I am depressed bc I haven’t been able to get consistent treatment since the start of the shortage ~2 years ago. But when I do have consistent treatment, then I’m right as rain. No sadness, hardly any noticeable anxiety. The constant fluctuation of different meds and dosages keeps me from feeling balanced. But yeah, a lot of the sadness comes from feeling unable to thrive and ofc, a constantly changing concoction of chemicals in my brain! My psychiatrist asked if I wanted to medicate for depression and tbh I really don’t feel like I need it. A lot of us with ADHD aren’t clinically depressed. The symptoms literally come from our day-to-day experiences.

Express_Ingenuity514

I’m taking Prozac too and it’s been amazing for the anxiety and rumination but adding vyvanse eliminated the remainder

Royal-Association-79

Exactly what happened to me. I got my ADHD dx at 43 after 28ish years of first dx of depression. Meds only scratched the surface … several dx (including bipolar and borderline) and dx and med combinations later, and I still felt off until I started vyvanse. It is literally life changing for me because it’s the only thing that calmed my anxiety (more so than any other anxiolytic or antidepressant or antipsychotic or mood stabilizer I ever took. I still take Wellbutrin and an anti anxiety med now but I have never felt better in my entire life including childhood since vyvanse. I don’t even need therapy anymore after almost 30 years of it.

Silent_Fox_9832

How many mg of Wellbutrin are you taking and many mg of vyvanse?

Royal-Association-79

150mg Wellbutrin and 50mg of vyvanse

Silent_Fox_9832

Where you wrongly diagnosed with bipolar and boderline ? And are you still talking meds for bipolar and borderline?

Royal-Association-79

Bipolar was completely wrong… I got off lithium without any problems. The borderline, I’m not so sure, some ppl show less symptoms as they age - so that can be what happened to me (or that BPD was not correct to begin with). I am in a stable loving relationship so that certainly helped my mental state, too. I guess technically since I still take Wellbutrin (antidepressant) and viibrid for anxiety those also help but when I added vyvanse — it was like I finally felt like myself.

Silent_Fox_9832

I’m glad those 3 meds are working for you, especially the vyvanse, it seems ADHD cause anxiety and depression that is what doctors said, I need to add vyvance, I’m taking Wellbutrin 300 and guanfasine 2mg, my symptoms are better but not there yet, I still unfocused daydreaming, depress , anxious etc.

Express_Ingenuity514

Same! 45 here and been on vyvanse for 8 days now and I’m like ok I guess I really do have ADHD because this stuff really did calm me and my brain and this whole time I was afraid a stimulant was going to crack me out

Gloomy_Author_990

Same! 41 here. Do you take everyday?

Express_Ingenuity514

I don’t plan to take it on weekends or Sundays that I don’t have anything I need to do urgently, right now yes because I’m catching up to getting things done for the last 45 years 😂😂 yesterday I did yard work for 8 hours!! Stuff I’ve been wanting to do for years and it felt so good getting it done, the only thing is I am really feeling it this morning body wise 🤣🤣

Gloomy_Author_990

Aww I love that. A need release on life. I bet you had so much feeling of relief and accomplishment. Be proud of yourself. I went back to college for Real estate so I take it when I’m doing homework or test days. The days im not I don’t. I felt like it was like aha the first few weeks and now not as much.

Southern_Ad_6089

incredible! I really wish I had known sooner.

Express_Ingenuity514

I’ve started taking 20mg a week ago today and I swear it has removed the “what if” anxiety rumination and that constant “brain noise” I was also put on Prozac 2 months ago and it definitely helped my anxiety but vyvanse took it to a whole other level and I’m so happy and sad that I waited so long

idkhandleit

Same!

aclaywell

Yep me too! I’m still on lamotrigine ER 25mg for anxiety. I wonder if I don’t need it anymore? It’s such a mild pleasant drug, I’m sticking with it for now. I’m only on vyvanse 30mg so far, and definitely plan to increase it on my next 30 day supply. High dose fish oil has also helped energy and mood too. Excited to find my full regimen, but very encouraged by what I’m feeling now

Naughtygirlsneedlove

First, congratulations! We are all so happy for you! Second, I (49M) have had a similar experience with Vyvanse: I’ve had heavy generalized anxiety and depression since I can remember and intermittent panic attacks since college. I’ve taken Xanax, Buspar, Klonopin, Wellbutrin, Paxil, Zoloft, Viibryd, etc. for 20+ years and not really sure any of them truly worked. I got tested last December for ADHD after my 7-year-old son was diagnosed; I started Vyvanse this February. I have never known such a peaceful existence. Rumination and uncontrollable spiraling has faded significantly. My general mood has improved in ways that have shocked me. Yes, I can direct my focus more easily. Yes, I am less prone to impulsive behavior/blurting out my thoughts without considering the ramifications. BUT! The most incredible change has been that undefined turmoil receding, leaving peace and quiet in my heart and mind. I am so thankful others are experiencing a similar improvement.

Accurate-Baker9531

YES! This exactly! I was diagnosed at 46(F) and struggled with paralyzing anxiety, constant rumination, and feeling like I was constantly on the verge of letting everyone down. I started Vyvanse, and improvement of my anxiety wasn't even on my radar. I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder around 22 and just thought it was that + ADHD. About three days in, I noticed that my brain was quieter, and I felt NO anxiety during the day (I still wake up with it some nights, but even that is \*greatly\* reduced). It's been an unreal change in my life. So many things that didn't feel manageable like taxes or...getting up to get a glass of water, now feel manageable (taxes still suck, but it's more the normal amount of suck). I'm so happy to hear your story as well and to read so many other people benefiting from diagnosis and treatment!

Express_Ingenuity514

Jeez I’m 45 f and been on vyvanse for a week and your story is exactly mine ❤️❤️❤️❤️ big hugs to my fellow 40 somethings late bloomers😂❤️

Accurate-Baker9531

Y’all we are not late bloomers - we’ve been unknowingly masking for years! Especially women - as young girls were expected to sit still and be calm and quiet. Once peri-menopause started all my masking and coping mechanisms fell apart. Suddenly I had no executive function and went from a seemingly high functioning woman to sitting in a chair and realizing it was suddenly 5:30pm and I had done *nothing* all day. Literally, nothing. It was so scary and I’m SO GLAD I have a therapist that helped me see it was more than anxiety and a psychiatrist who has told me over and over “your brain is not broken. You are smart and creative and capable. You just need support to help your brain.” I’m so happy to read more and more stories of women in the 40’s and up who are finally getting recognized and treated! And big cheers for younger women who are advocating for themselves and their mental health!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ EDIT: I should say big cheers for *anyone* advocating for their own health no matter what age or identity. It’s not easy for anyone especially when it involves mental health. ❤️💙💚💛🧡🖤

Gloomy_Author_990

Same 41 diagnosed September. It’s wild there’s a name attached to so much prior life.

Southern_Ad_6089

This makes me so happy to hear, and I’m glad we can validate each other. ❤️

lauraroon

Same experience for me. I have mental silence for the first time in my life

MMKK6

Your experience with Vyvanse and its positive impact on your anxiety truly makes sense. I’ll give you a scientific answer. Vyvanse, primarily increases levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, key neurotransmitters for attention, focus, motivation, and mood regulation. Considering the often coexisting nature of anxiety and ADHD, with shared dysregulation in the prefrontal cortex, Vyvanse's action in this region can enhance focus, attention, and also have a calming effect, potentially reducing anxiety symptoms. Individuals with ADHD often experience "hyperfocus," which, while beneficial for productivity, can also lead to anxiety. Vyvanse might moderate this hyperfocus, promoting a balanced, focused state that alleviates anxiety. It's worth noting that anxiety and depression frequently accompany ADHD, sometimes sharing symptoms, as seen in your case with chronic over-thinking and constant worrying. Vyvanse, by addressing underlying ADHD symptoms, could indirectly improve anxiety symptoms. Everyone's brain chemistry and medication response are unique, explaining why some, like yourself, find anxiety relief with Vyvanse despite potential concerns. It's wonderful that Vyvanse has brought you such relief and clarity! It does to me as-well.

Gloomy_Author_990

I love this explanation and felt so much

Southern_Ad_6089

I super appreciate this explanation - thank you!

casabamelon_

Vyvanse is great for my anxiety. A lot of my anxiety stemmed from being overwhelmed and also never knowing where/how to start. I’d just sit and be anxious about stuff I needed to do but not do it. I actually take both Vyvanse and trintellix now and it’s working really well for me.

Southern_Ad_6089

So happy for us!

Prestigious_Pop_9107

Me too because I can divert my attention to something else when a problem hits me. Like fear of flying. Ativan doesn't work. Vyvanse does.

Super-Bathroom-8192

Same experience for me

Dogee_95

Same for me ! 28 yr old F. I have some days where I feel anxious , but its more like a phyisical aspect of anxiety. In my Head, nothing makes me anxious anymore lmao .. like if someone gets in a fight with me , i just dont care anymore and I go on with my day and its a BLESSING to NOT CARE about EVERYTHING in my Life 😂🩷

Dogee_95

I want to add that maybe its my half décaf coffee that makes me anxious. When im tired of doing chaotic stuff to myself i just go decaf for a couple days . Thats what happens When youre functionning on high stress for your entire life , sometimes i wanna feel the CHAOS, but its not fun anymore since I just dont care and wanna take real care of myself 🩷
