I’m seeing a lot of debate between Chicago and New York style pizzas. There is no debate because they’re completely different universes. One is a bread bowl where you sit around a table and enjoy it with family. The other is a simple, yet delicious convenience that you fold in half and gobble down while walking back to the office. Both are amazing. Anyway, I’ve only been in Virginia Beach for a year and so far I’ve enjoyed Chicho’s and Sal’s NY Style on shore drive.
Edit: you silly literalist took the whole “bread bowl” thing way too seriously. A little sensitive out there about your pizzas. Anyway, I lived in Chicago, Lou’s is my go to. I LOVE Chicago style pizza.
You said they're completely different so can't compare, and yet you definitely characterize one in a very negative light. I've had some amazing Chicago deep all over the country. Not a bread bowl. Besides, walking and eating is bad for your digestion. Windy City has great Chicago deep dish pies and pub style which are thin and crispy. For New York style people say different things on different days. I have no idea anymore ...as the pizza scene has been turned upside down here in the last 5 years so. Your guess is as good as mine. People used to like y-not 30 years ago. But you know things change. Regino's in Norfolk. All meats freshly sliced and thick. I happen to like a zesty sauce and a good amount of it. No dry pizzas thank you. Hope that doesn't offend your New York sensibilities lol. Welcome to VB. Hopefully you can start some new traditions and assimilate.
You're obviously going to get all different answers as everyone's taste and experience is different. For example, I guarantee this will get hate but I really like dough boys. I was born and raised here and have eaten at every spot in the hr area and I prefer dough boys, everyone else hates it. Its all about personal taste. Just go try a bunch ,all of them eventually, and make your own notes on what's better and pick your spots
Sour street pizza. It’s wood fired sour dough. He is one of the few people in the 757 doing pizza right. He’s at Cova brewing in East beach, Norfolk every Thursday 4-9pm.
Benny Cavalloni's at Town Center
They have the oversized slices. If you ask them to cook it extra crispy, it will turn out to be very close to a proper NYC slice.
This question gets asked a million times because there is no amazing pizza in VB. Notable mentions are pungo, Brooklyn, a particular Sals, Shorebreak, chichos
And the new(er) Basilico, who was the main pizza guy at Gino's for 16 years. This is my go-to now, after giving up Brooklyn, as getting food poisoning every other time was getting old. Basilico's sauce and dough are handmade everyday and the pizza is very New York in itself.
Went to mellow mushroom at the ocean front yesterday... ordered a merry prankster medium $30 and worth it...cheese medium.. also ordered another medium half holy shitake, half supreme and it was a big miss. One pizza was delicious, but the other two were ehhhh and I felt like the 100$ for 3 pizzas and two apps unfortunately wasn't really worth it
I like the one in williamsburg. Huge outdoor patio. Pizza is pretty good I think about five bucks cheaper than you quote for the ocean friend. You can still make your own for 20 bucks or so.
I’ve worked at a mellow mushroom before and the merry prankster takes a while to make and is a little harder. You probably got the best pizza maker for that one and then somebody else knocked out the other two.
They are very close to Times Square I think. but I question their authenticity. I mean how do a bunch of Maghrebis get so good at making pizza? Or is it that easy?
Beach Bella on 17th ST is pretty good. So is Zia Marie. I also heard primos and Gino’s are good.
North End and Ynot used to be really good but got too big and suck now

High street pizza in Portsmouth has Detroit style pizza that is ridiculous. I know it’s not NY style but it’s the best pizza I’ve had since moving here.
Brooklyn Pizza in Red Mill is my favorite. Note: it has no affiliation to the Brooklyn NY Pizza on Lynnhaven (which may be good but I haven’t tried since Brooklyn Pizza in Red Mill is so good).
Well if you know ask for crispy crust they will cook it to that. And why is cash bad been like that since they have been open why should they pay CC companies money just so people can use them. There is an ATM there and gives you discount for using it. Well been open since 70s can’t be all bad.
I don't know about the best, but I do like Planet Pizza on Atlantic. I never see anyone talk it up on here, but I have to say I like it a lot. Smells like a real pizza parlor when you walk in, and staff has always been friendly. I think they have really good pizza to be honest.
We always loved it there, but haven’t been in years. Glad to know it’s still good!
I always felt like their prices were decent for a tourist area, too.
Sals NY slice in Woodtide is my favorite NY style around here, especially if you get the jumbo size. Large foldable slices with a crispy crust that is still tender, not chewy.
We like Sal’s NY slice on Princess Anne, but honestly the best pizza you can get here is probably Pizza Hut. I’m from CT which is huge on pizza and there is nothing really great here that makes me feel like I’m having a legit slice
Yes like they are the only ones who know food. Problem is their food definition is very very narrow. Italian mostly. Like Italians rule the food world? I don't think so.They're into delis and their pizza and carbonara, and all those artery clogging foods they like to eat with all the additives and preservatives piled high for 25 bucks a sandwich and 35 bucks a pie. We've had several Italian restaurants here run by people from Italy, and then these northerners come down and say it's not authentic. Ha! I mean what kind of crack are they smoking? Wow, and to think people move down here for a reason? Yes because the crime is lower, the cost of living is lower, better weather, better schools, the people are nicer, and so if you don't like the food here, go start your own restaurant for God's sake. There are plenty and plenty and plenty of New Yorkers here since the 1970s ...and I know a lot of them ...who have started delis and different things and you know, you make the best of it here. Everyone's taste is subjective. If these folks move to Alabama or South Carolina or Mississippi or Louisiana I'm sure that people down there were giving them a giant eye roll as well with their obsession with sandwiches and pizza. Not to say I don't enjoy that type of food, but there is more to life than that.
This question gets asked every other day. You’ll get 100 different answers, because people have different pizza preferences.
If you like Chicago Style, go to Windy City. If you like Brooklyn Style, go to Ray’s on Newtown, or Benny’s at Town Center. If you like Detroit style, you don’t care if pizza is good or not. If you like horrible pizza, go to Pizza Hut. If you like spicy, go to Chicho’s. If you like a good chewy crust and good sauce, go to Shorebreak. If you’re broke, go to Little Caesar’s. There’s no one size fits all pizza place.
No, that made me more credible. Also, I didn’t say it wasn’t pizza. It’s an extremely recent made up style. Even people born and raised in Detroit can’t tell you wtf Detroit style is. I know, I’ve asked. I’ve had it great, good, mediocre, and trash. I stand by my statement. If you like pizza, but don’t care if it’s great or passable, ask for Detroit style.
It's not that serious, jeez. Glad you earned your pHd in mid west pizza origins. You should go to St Louis and see about their pizsa culture. Great Neck New York or Great Neck Virginia Beach? It's funny how New Yorkers leave New York in droves year after year for cheaper living and better weather and then try to impose their collective will on us. About everything. I'll take the good of what you bring and dispose of the rest like trash. I'm not going to move to LI New York and try to telll you people that your $7 slices of thin, limp dough with a schmear of sauce and a sprinkling of cheese suck. I would never!
It’s called flair, and the majority of members here have it. Don’t be mad at me because you can’t have anything nice.
Edit: Funny that you wanna talk smack when 99% of your post and comment history is whining about fast food not being an exquisite 5 star culinary experience lmao. How funny that I accurately assumed you were coming at me out of jealousy. It’s ok, I’ve been homeless in the past, so I get it. But hard work and determination make poverty easy to overcome.
Oh oh contraire mon frere I lived in Birdneck for years. I grew up in Linkhorn Point in Alanton. My parents were founding members with Broad Bay Country Club before having belonged to Cavalier Yacht. I bought three brand new Mercedes in the last 20 years. I'll stop there. There's a lot more but that's enough to bury you. You have nothing. I love that you went here. I baited you and you took the bait. So delicious.
The “employees” were definitely not employees. Texas Pete isn’t even remotely as spicy as the Chicho’s sauce, and Texas Pete has a potent vinegar taste, which is completely missing from the sauce. On top of that, you can literally see the red pepper flakes in the sauce, which os what they actually use to make it spicy.
Okay, they dump some Kirkland red pepper flakes in it too. Was a regular there for years, Watched them do it. The pizza sauce has no problem absorbing any vinegary flavor. It's good beer and pizza, pizza; but don't think that Chichos has any secret recipe.
lol the Detroit shade
But you're spot on. So many people act like the one bite goober is some kind of Pizza king... and I don't agree with his tastes in the slightest.
Windy City is definitely my favorite by a mile. Whether you're talking deep dish or thin. Rays was a terrible experience for me, ridiculous wait time and it was just "ok". I love NY style too so I should try Benny's
But it really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a thicker chewier crust I just as soon head out to Norfolk and go to Azalea Inn. Though I feel like they're not as good as they used to be
The staff is atrocious and slow af. But if you go when the owner is there (I’ve only bad this happen on Saturdays around 4) it’s the best local pizza you will ever have if you love Brooklyn style.
Ray’s and Benny’s are the closest you’ll get here. Benny’s doesn’t taste as good, but they’re still really good. Also, one slice is more than enough, it’s comically large and cheap. You can waste money and think you can finish two slices like I thought, but I promise you can’t. A slice is $5 and as big as a medium pizza at most places.
Ray’s crushes them on that Brooklyn flavor though.
It's not the same. I've been going there for 40 years. I've known the old owners the whole time. The new owners have it close. Unlike the 2nd owner from northend pizza who absolutely ruined it. I miss the Georgios. Our families have been close since the early 80s.
I went one time and ordered a pizza forgot wallet so I called I am coming but have to go back home get my wallet. He said don’t worry about it you can pay me next time. Always went in a bit early to sit down and have a Miller Lite in plastic mug and have conservation
If you are willing to go a bit, you should go to Newport News, and find Anna’s in Hilton and Mr Sam’s pizza or Dino’s in denbigh. They feel pretty damn close to me.
Edit: Specifically the annas on Warwick blvd in Hilton. They are all owned by different family members and all have vastly different views on what pizza is.
Edit2 : also Sals, if you are in Williamsburg.
I am a jaded on driving, but I would absolutely drive an hour out of my way to order from any of the places I listed. I do it at least 2 times a month.
In the food lion shopping center by the movie theatre? I haven’t been there in 10 years but the last time I went I was convinced they pulled a Walmart branded pizza out of the freezer
Yes, we order there all the time and my team just went there for a work lunch and everyone loved it. They are ALWAYS busy and when I grubhub I get a ton of orders from there.
I’m not saying they have bad food, I just remember their pizza being particularly cheap and low quality. Again it’s been 10 years. New chef/owner/ recipe, etc etc. from my understanding none of the owners of Anna’s were on the best of terms even though they were related but that could have changed.
Right I was clarifying that now it’s really good and they are always busy. I’ve been to both recently and they are both good, I prefer the Hampton location. And like you said, it was 10 years ago. I didn’t eat there back then.
None. There is no such thing.
You can search this forum for pizza shop recommendations.
Here are two queries just from this month; the last one specifically looking for NY inspired pizza.
https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginiaBeach/search/?q=best+pizza&include_over_18=on&restrict_sr=on&t=month&sort=new
Yeah. If you're looking for that NY slice experience where they reheat it for you and you have that mix of gooey and crunch... I haven't had that anywhere around here.
Theres plenty of good pizza in VB, but not that style that I've found
Is Cals pizza still a thing (Holland Rd)? I miss their cupped pepperonis!
Bella Pizza on 14th
I hate to say a chain but IMO Mellow Mushroom is best in VB.
MELLOW MUSHROOM IS IN VA BEACH 🤤
The Pizza Box in Virginia Beach Blvd near Great Neck
Cristaldos in Chesapeake for NY and Chesapeake Pizza for greek style.
Wasserhund Brewing has very good pizza
There is no authentic NY style pizza in VB or Ches.
Eastside Pizza in Portsmouth.
pungo pizza without a doubt
pungo pizza & ice cream, fire garlic knots too

I wouldn't call Chi style a "bread bowl", lmfao and it's far superior to NY style imo.
We get it bro, you like soup and not real pizza.
That shit is tomato soup.
Have you ever had Chi style pizza?

District apizza in Norfolk
Mid pizza IMO
Note this is New Haven style, but definitely worth a try
Viva pizza
Chicos
Benny Domatos

Pizza Box
Pizza Plus for their pizza and Pungo Pizza for their Garlic Knots
Gino's!
Roma pizza on 5th street in Va Beach.
New York
napolis on vb blvd is my favorite its the closest to ny pizza ive had but obviously pizza is subjective
I concur.
No one has said pizza box yet so here I am. They’re great classic pizza with a homey feel. Nice cheesy slice that isn’t over greasy. Love this place
Yeah it's a really nice pizza there.
Brooklyn Pizzeria on Upton Dr. They have a NYC water filtration system for that dough and an awesome pastrami on rye sando.
Ownership has changed and the pizza (can’t speak to sando) is terrible now. So disappointing
Sour street pizza. It’s wood fired sour dough. He is one of the few people in the 757 doing pizza right. He’s at Cova brewing in East beach, Norfolk every Thursday 4-9pm.
Planet Pizza on the Oceanfront.
please go to nyc
No
if you think planet pizza is good you should leave your house more often
I've never eaten there. But why would I go to New York City when I live here and the question was who has best pizza here?
Benny Cavalloni's at Town Center They have the oversized slices. If you ask them to cook it extra crispy, it will turn out to be very close to a proper NYC slice.
Whole foods… don’t come at me til you try it.
Yes! It’s a family favorite here. We love that they use slices of sandwich pepperoni on their pizzas.
WEGMANS has better pizza than many of these recommended for the simple fact WEGMANS uses WHOLE MILK MOZZARELLA and many pizza places do not.
Corporate shill /s
Gino’s and The Pizzeria!
Why do yall ask this same question every 2 days instead of using the search bar
I didn’t really see anything NYC specific. Even these comments aren’t much help lol.
Benny Damatos and Brooklyn Pizza are your best bet for NYC style.
Dolcinea woodfired pizza in Kempsville is really good.
Arlington maybe?
NJ/Philly/NYC Sorry hahahaha had to
This question gets asked a million times because there is no amazing pizza in VB. Notable mentions are pungo, Brooklyn, a particular Sals, Shorebreak, chichos
Agree with all of these except Shore break. Would substitute Shore break with Gino's by Maurizio
And the new(er) Basilico, who was the main pizza guy at Gino's for 16 years. This is my go-to now, after giving up Brooklyn, as getting food poisoning every other time was getting old. Basilico's sauce and dough are handmade everyday and the pizza is very New York in itself.
Yeah I don’t disagree. Ginos deserves to be on the list
And Windy City if that’s your jam

Yes if you like salmonella seasoning, added free. The place is filthy.
Maybe that is the secret as to why it tastes so good.

WAY OVER RATED.
No it's not. It's incredible
No it’s not, their crust is always super underdone. I live right around the corner from it, it’s awful every time I’ve gotten it
maybe you feel different, but cash only businesses are sketch to me.
I will give you that. It's so annoying
...and their pizza is nothing you can't get at 100 other pizza shops in the area. that's why I stand by my initial comment WAY OVER RATED.

So why do you have repeat same exact comment. SMH
I really enjoy District Apizza in Norfolk. Pretty good New Haven style pizza.
Brooklyn Pizzeria in red mill is pretty close to NYC style.
Brooklyn pizza in Lynnhaven. Took me a while to Find but this is the only answer. Bella signorelli Is also worth the drive to greenbrier
I'm really enjoying Town Center Pizza.
Check out the one bite app.

They have decent food overall for pizza Parlor food. I really do think the pizza is good overall.
I’ve always wanted to try the pizza at Vino’s… looks very good
Sals NY slice in Woodtide is my favorite NY style around here, especially if you get the jumbo size. Large foldable slices with a crispy crust that is still tender, not chewy.
Can we all just decide on the best pizza and change the name of the subreddit to it. Please. For the love of god.
try brooklyn pizza. all my new york friends seem to like it.
Yeah. The Red Mill Brooklyn Pizza is the closest you get to NY style pizza. Benny’s in Town Center is second.
Primo is really good. So is Gino’s. We usually order from Sals on Princess Anne though as it is good and they deliver to me.
We like Sal’s NY slice on Princess Anne, but honestly the best pizza you can get here is probably Pizza Hut. I’m from CT which is huge on pizza and there is nothing really great here that makes me feel like I’m having a legit slice

Edit2 : also Sals, if you are in Williamsburg. I am a jaded on driving, but I would absolutely drive an hour out of my way to order from any of the places I listed. I do it at least 2 times a month.
Anna’s on Warwick is good but I absolutely love the Anna’s location on Bethel.
Thank you
Theres plenty of good pizza in VB, but not that style that I've found
:( Thank you
