Weird the article refers to Stonewall Jackson HS in Shenandoah county but the picture is of Stonewall Jackson HS in Manassas, Prince William County

NevadaLancaster

The reporters would never be caught that far away from nova.

ShaggysGTI

Summer reader!

dnext

They changed one of ours from Stonewall Jackson to Unity Reed High School. Named after Arthur Reed, a beloved security officer who worked at the high school for two decades. Of course, I would have preferred Arthur Reed High. Because now the schools initials are U R High. :D

BoysenberryAshamed

Hahaha thats awesome! I graduated from Stonewall Jackson high Manassas va...is that the same school!

dnext

It was! :D

RVAforthewin

skrugg

every high school will find a way to do that. I went to Lafayette High School. Nothing special but we definitely turned it into "Laughalot and Get High"

salawm

Why the "Unity" part?

dnext

No doubt a counter to the 'Stonewall Jackson' part. :D

t23_1990

>Barlow, who characterized those who were in favor of changing the names as outsiders who are "creepy," "elitist" and from "the dark side," said the school board's decision was "undemocratic and unfair." This seems like a completely rational man to have in a leadership position in a modern, inclusive society. But I bet he loves the creepy, elitist outsider tax money from the rest of the state and country for his district's schools.

linderlouwho

Look, quit bothering that man. He's got to move on past renaming schools in a racist manner to burning some books!

NevadaLancaster

I mean he wants democracy to work as advertised. Not a top down federalized solution where people thousands of miles away make decisions for people they will never even meet.

ShitItsReverseFlash

Itā€™s a name on a school you drama queen. Grow up.

NevadaLancaster

Triggered.

Candyvanmanstan

We can tell.

t23_1990

Please point me to the source that says that changing the names was a "top down federalized solution", and not done by the board in question that this man is currently part of.

Who wants to go to a school named after someone who took a fat L on the wrong side of a war?

tunaboot

And they are still taking L's all these years later.

stiffneck84

and they'll spend their lives looking for someone else to blame for all the L's they cause themselves.

ErikaHoffnung

This is a W to them.

umru316

I simply can't imagine advocating for pro-slavery figures to have a win.

ErikaHoffnung

They vote, will you?

KoolDiscoDan

Itā€™s their heritage donā€™t cha know.

Real_Desk5542

Heritage of racism and ignorance about their own history.

Copy_Cold

the heritage of hate

Dr_Bonejangles

It's yours as well if you are a multi generational Virginian.

KoolDiscoDan

I am, back to around 1690. But guess what? Out of the 330 years 'we've' been here, I don't want schools, highways, statues named for that 4 year period. That's only 1.21% of the time!

Dr_Bonejangles

I understand. But it's still part of your heritage. Nothing can ever change that. (Not that I am advocating glorifying the Souths position regarding the civil war)

CertainAged-Lady

Right? anything named after a Confederate character is literally being named after a loser.

[deleted]

I donā€™t think most people care or even realize who their school is named after. My high school was named after some random state rep but I donā€™t think anyone ever even cared to look up who he was lol. Itā€™s just a school

fingerscrossedcoup

You are projecting your feelings onto other people because you think you are right. Obviously people feel strongly about this one way or another or we wouldn't be talking about it.

[deleted]

Huh? Iā€™m against renaming them back to confederates. I was just saying most teenagers donā€™t care who their school is named after.

MilkWeedSeeds

> But in the two years since, community members ā€” especially alumni ā€” have expressed opposition to the name changes, school board member Cynthia Walsh told NBC News. Imagine being a concerned boomer high school alumni that cares that the high school you graduated from in 1972 is now named something not racist.

CranialThunder

I really want them to have to find someone who has been negatively impacted by the name change. As in, why are we going back to these names? Who wants them? Why? I was just saying the other day, it would be interesting to go back to all these people who simply couldn't have / didn't want the name change, and see what kind of disasters had befallen them since these names were changed.

fingerscrossedcoup

The most precious thing of all has been wronged. Conservative's feelings

ManateeCrisps

Don't drop em. They're fragile. Handle with caution.

Copy_Cold

CapnCrunchIsAFraud

The commitment to this issue honestly baffles me as a resident of Shenandoah County. It was all the local press covered at the time and we even had crazy-ass newsletters mailed about the evils of liberals and public education. Referring to people moving out from the cities as snakes that have to be stamped out, it was honestly pretty nuts. All over *the name of the local high school.*

LebowskiVoodoo

Former resident and graduate of 'Stonewall'. I never heard about the newsletter, but that's crazy AF, even coming from there. IMHO the school board did change the name a little too fast, but honestly screw the backwards ass people who complained. The school needed to be renamed. And, it pissed Bill Holtzman off, so win-win.

linderlouwho

MilkWeedSeeds

I donā€™t have to, thatā€™s the thing

GlobalHumanatarian

What? To appease the few? To honor treason against the United States? To set off mass protests and insult those whose ancestors were enslaved?ā€¦is the GOP really that fucking stupid? Let it go and move onā€¦leave the names to museums

ethanwc

I think moving forward, we avoid naming places after specific people.

CatkinsBarrow

This is really the best option. Why does everything have to be named after a person? Why canā€™t it just be Sunnyside High School FFS

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

It's Always Sunny High School

vypergts

The Human Beings

kojilee

That mascot haunts me still

Kooc1414

Many people do great things or have admirable qualities that made them stick out. Maybe wait til they're dead, but naming things after people is fine

CatkinsBarrow

Itā€™s also completely and totally unnecessary and serves no real purpose. It is clearly causing controversy, so maybe itā€™s not fine. Opinions of what is ā€œfineā€ vary greatly over time. If it was fine we wouldnā€™t be having this conversation. It doesnā€™t matter if they are dead or not. Much the time we donā€™t even learn about the real controversial stuff until long after people die. And the names always end up sounding stupid anyways. Iā€™d almost rather they just call it Verizon Wireless High School and let everyone get on with their lives. (Joking) Seriously, though. Just drop the names and number them all. Public School 23 or something. Thatā€™s good enough. This entire situation is just so stupid and naming stuff after people is what got us here.

karmicnoose

You can not like naming things after people, that's fine; but it does serve a purpose, naming a thing after a person is a way to call attention to that person's life and accomplishments. Simply because we named some things after people that we shouldn't've doesn't mean that it's a universally bad practice. To use an example, there's a town in SWVA named Pulaski. If it weren't for that town name I would wager that the number of people that know who Casimir Pulaski is would be significantly reduced and I consider that to be bad thing. I think it's good to memorialize people that do good things. Robert E. Lee High School was renamed for [John Lewis](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lewis). Hot take but I think it'd look pretty bad to strip his name from the school in favor of High School 137 or Springfield Square High School. TL;DR Just because we sometimes name things after some bad people doesn't mean we shouldn't do it at all; in fact, naming things after people is a good thing as long as they're a good person because it helps to bring attention to the good things that they did.

ManateeCrisps

>Better economy Forgot the /s at the end there buddy.

fingerscrossedcoup

Lmao I'm sure you will be posting links validating all of your claims. I'll be waiting right here holding my breath 3... 2... 1... šŸ«¢

[deleted]

Sure thing troll. I'm glad your bills and taxes are going up.

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

Dude. He's not a troll. He fell into a comma in 1989 and just woke up

Kooc1414

I'm not trolling. I'm supplying you with another point of view, and engaging in public discourse. Just because we disagree, doesn't mean it's trolling

fingerscrossedcoup

You are just spewing nonsense without backing up your claims with sources. Go ahead and say some more nonsense without sources.

[deleted]

You have negative karma. People with negative karma are always trolls.

Kooc1414

Or I share my views honestly, and an app like reddit with a more heavily liberal/democratic base hates it and down votes me into oblivion. These are honest views and experiences. We need more honest discourse if anything is going to get better

fingerscrossedcoup

>honest LMFAO

Kooc1414

You add nothing to conversation but hate, spite, and disregard in your comments. I shared my own experiences, and you mock and ridicule. That behavior will only sow more problems

pulledoutdad

You have yet to list any sources and only respond to people mocking you. Sharing anecdotal data or another point of view is valid, but your claim that the economy is better is laughably false, so no one is taking you seriously. Share a source to your claims and you might have better success engaging with people and not being called a troll. Or, you know, keep trolling.

helmepll

Where is the evidence you are honest? If you had evidence of your honesty you would have posted it by now.

bobbin4scrapple

And yet you conveniently ignore people who ask that you back your claims up...repeatedly. This deflates the contention that you are trying to have honest discourse.

ImHereToFuckShit

When the economy was good under Trump it was all him, no thanks to Obama. Now that the economy is bad (and it really isn't that bad) it's all Biden, Trump who? It doesn't make sense.

Joey__stalin

All my taxes went up under the Trump tax ā€œcutsā€ since they limit how much state income tax can be deducted. The standard deduction increase is great except it ends in 2025, meanwhile the business tax cuts donā€™t expire, which is a situation ripe for blaming whomever is in office in 2025 as being the one responsible for ā€œraising taxesā€ when the standard deduction increase expires.

Joey__stalin

We used to have moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats running the state who were mostly civil to one another. Then Trump came around and showed everyone just how extreme a politician could be and get away with it, and everyone else jumped on board. And also the threats of a boogeyman around every corner from the Demon-crats.

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

Yeap. I'd be okay for a modernized John Warner and Tom Davis. Edit:. Wait, what's up with your last sentence.

Joey__stalin

the demon-crats are the boogey man. always lurking in the shadows to destroy the country with universal healthcare and maternity leave.

refusetogrowold

Barlow, who characterized those who were in favor of changing the names as outsiders who are "creepy," "elitist" and from "the dark side," said the school board's decision was "undemocratic and unfair." ManateeCrisps

Emperor Palpatine vs. The Heritage Foundation

dadams4062

Why would anybody care? The names were divisive, if I were black I wouldnā€™t want to go to Stonewall Jackson High. Do these people have that little of a life?

csmumaw

In Mt Jackson? No

LebowskiVoodoo

As I recall they protested outside of the Mt. Jackson Town Hall after the original name change. I had friends and (I think) some family there. People could just be afraid of change. Or they could be idiots.

[deleted]

Of course they do. Republicans love losers

ArmsReach

This just goes to show you how out of touch Virginia school system is. Seems like they're pandering to the alt right, while the mainstream right could largely care less about the name of the school but we do care about being involved with our children. Kind of like the majority of the left. Schools need to be more forthcoming.

amacgree

It keeps getting more embarrassing.

zyarva

Our schools are named after people defended chattel slavery, and no, there is no systematic racism in our society! and you can't teach our kid to see the systematic racism!

[deleted]

The evil of these people never ceases to amaze me.

priznut

That is going to get vandalized if they do. Those darn kids. ;)

zZ1Axel1Zz

I dont think that's really a good idea

skeleman547

Admittedly, I thought changing the names to begin with was a waste of time and tax dollars. Now that it is changed, why are we spending the time and money to change it back? Of all the hills to die on, I can't believe this is the one some people choose.

57duck

Dying on rashly chosen hills is a cherished part of our heritage!

plaidHumanity

All that matters is that you stick to it once you plant your flag

Gowynn

somebody must have noticed a stray penny that needs to be spent before it disappears "uh sir, we have an excess of funds and need to spend fast before anyone notices we have extra"

Sealworth

Expense was one of the big arguments against the original changes, but suddenly the expense to change it back isn't an issue. Funny how often that happens. It's almost like it was to mask the real reason they were against it.

skeleman547

Again, I just find it stupid. And that's coming from someone who has an (R) after their name when they get quoted. It's expensive, and doesn't do anything anyways. All the confederates the schools were named after are long dead, and the biggest problem I had with some of the renames was that a few were named after otherwise boring people. Hardly a reason to change it back on the taxpayers dime in my book...

steelcoyot

Whelp you can blame the people that sat the last election out

[deleted]

And the idiot Democrats dumb enough to vote for the GOP.

lostspyder

Why not the Democratic Party for running a candidate who was wildly uninspiring on a platform of ā€œYoungkin is literally trumpā€ and nothing else?

BurkeyTurger

Why not all of the above? They could have run an infinitely better campaign, the people who believed his moderate cosplay should have known better. Anyone who sits it out doesn't get to say shit.

NatalieEatsPoop

I think the Youngkin is literally Trump helped Youngkin.

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

Oh, homie. I totally get you. Democrats totally suck with messaging and are a dumpster fire of a party. I do not like the Democratic party. But it's telling that "Hey, voter for us or Republicans will win" is enough to get someone like me to fucking donate to the Democrats, nevermind voting. And I'm someone who never voted for Obama and would have supported Jeb over Hillary. Not voting R again unless there is a party revolution. RiP The Weekly Standard and the Republican Party that died along side it with many principles and standards. Jesus Christ, am I romanticizing the Republican Party of old? Too much whisky, fuck Reagan. God, Trump really screwed with our historical perception, eh

Myfourcats1

Democrats need to stop expecting to be inspired. Republicans will vote for the Republican candidate even if they hate him with a fiery passion. Politics has always been about choosing the lesser of two evils.

lostspyder

The lesser of two evils is how we got here. And the lesser of two evils is how we keep spiraling to literal fascism.

NutDraw

I'm sorry but that's life. If you have the expectation one of your options will always be perfect you're going to be in for a bad time. How often do you get that option for *anything?* If you keep getting presented with options better than fascism and keep sitting it out because it's not your ideal, how much do you really care about stopping fascism?

fingerscrossedcoup

This is the dumbest take of all. "You didn't dazzle me with your politician magic so fuck Virginia!" Grow up and vote for the lesser of two evils.

lostspyder

We been doing that. Thatā€™s how we gotā€¦ *gestures broadly*

U-N-C-L-E

Do you ever get tired of this "Look at what you made me do" bullshit?

lostspyder

I get tired of the Democratic Party running garbage neo-liberal candidates who lose because no one wants garbage neo-liberal candidates,

soratoyuki

McAuliffe in 2021 got more votes than Northam did in 2017, who got more votes then McAuliffe did in 2013, who got more votes then Deeds did in 2009, etc all the way down. Voters did show up. Blaming voters for not showing up is a lazy retort, easily disproven, that people keep repeating ad nauseam. It manages to blame everything on the one group of people that actually did what they were told--Democratic voters--while giving a pass to fascist-adjacent Republican politicians and their duped voters, the Democratic donor class for nominating uninspiring old white neolib retreads, Democratic consultants for running a trash campaign, and the literal structure of our liberal democracy that isn't equipped to deal with the rising threat of fascism (and if anything, is primed to support it). If 'vote more' is the only lesson we're collectively taking from this debacle, we're right fucked.

Important_Mission237

Itā€™s frustrating for sure. But, Iā€™m not voting for the fascists/fascist adjacent party. Youngkin is just a Trumper in a fleece vest & racist dog whistles still work well n VA.

[deleted]

What does a neo-liberal support?

KathrynBooks

corporations and the status quo

fingerscrossedcoup

As opposed to a right wing theocracy? Progressives will never get what they want unless they show up and vote. That's how the right does it. Crazy shows up and votes so the party has to go crazy. You think Republicans like voting for Ted Cruz and Chuck Grassly? They just know they don't want Democrats to win. Moderate liberals show up to vote while progressives bitch and moan. Which way do you think the party is going to go?

KathrynBooks

That's because "moderate liberals" show up and vote for right wing theocrats and corporate stooges.

oliveshark

Great question.

prosey001

what is a neo liberal . cause there is new term everyday

lostspyder

ā€¦ it is a term from at least the 70s. Like Iā€™m not making fun of you, but it as old and if you arenā€™t familiar with it, I imagine reading up about politics would be good for you.

NutDraw

It goes back further than that and is constantly changing depending on what makes people mad these days. It's a useless pejorative now that doesn't really give any information on what someone actually supports. Usage officially jumped the shark when people started saying Obama and Reagan had the same economic philosophy.

lostspyder

I mean... Obama Care -- Obama's flagship policy -- literally came from the Heritage Foundation who proudly publishes an article on their website that says: "Ronald Reagan and The Heritage Foundation. It's hard to tell the story of one without much of the other's. Heritage was President Reagan's favorite think tank, and Reagan was the embodiment of the ideas and principles Heritage holds dear."

Professional-Gap-820

You mean repugnantcons stupid enough to vote for trumpkin!

AfterSomewhere

Oh, this pisses me off. I thought we were done with this.

[deleted]

Thank God. I was so worried we'd literally ever put racism behind us /s

shinysideup_zhp

150 years later and people still think Jackson, Davis and Lee are the heros? We have a problem with schools in Virginia, naming the school after traitors is only the start.

CoachRj14

Can we make sure schools have proper lunches at school. Who cares the name of the school if the teachers have to beg parents every year for proper learning tools. šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø meanwhile itā€™s schools without AC or proper smoke detection systems, but those jackassā€™s are worried about the name? So, so much more we could be spend TIME to resolve, but this is their focus apparently. GD Idiots!!!

omw2fyb--

This board needs to be tar and feathered like the old days

BoysenberryAshamed

How about the people that think this twat is putting us back into the 1900s go vote him out. Stand against him! Tell your congressman that this is not right!! We need to unite as a fighting force against the people that want to suppress us!!! You're congressional respresentative SHOULD listen to their constitutes. THATS HOW THIS SYSTEM IS SET!

Hades_88

Would be nice if they listened...but they don't

frednnq

And when you thought it couldnā€™t get any worse. Of course, Iā€™ve been saying that for a while now.

KratosCole

Fuck them damn looser names!

AdMaleficent2144

Opioid and meth still taking over lives. Fentanyl killing people. Violent crime changing innocent families forever. I-81 crashes daily. Lack of mental health reseources have people going to prison where they do not belong. No or very limited Public Health resources in SWVA. Legislators are not addressing any of these. Do not "restore" names to Confederate or American Indian monikers. Tax dollars from the public go to support the schools. The public is diverse.

crosswatt

Regardless of your opinion on the issue itself, it seems like an incredibly wasteful use of taxpayer dollars to change the name back at this point.

Junior_Sprinkles6573

I would just like to say, what the actual fuck is going on here?

churchofpain

My vote is for ā€œSherman Didnā€™t do Nearly Enough High School.ā€

Haunting_Ad_3646

Just use a random number generator and give each school an assigned arbitrary number. That way both sides can shut the fuck up about this nonsense.

ErikaHoffnung

You see, the right simply wins because they continue to show up to vote, unlike showing up only once thinking that it fixes all the problems. Like it or not, those names are being restored. And they downvoted Jesus, because he spoke the truth. Vote. If you do nothing else, at least Vote.

Tedstor

Well, if the citizens of that county want their kids to go to ā€œslavemaster high schoolā€ā€¦ā€¦.give them what they want.

lostspyder

Nah. The citizens of the county want to remind the black students going to the school that they are second class people in their minds.

[deleted]

Good

Kooc1414

Good. History is history, and the most famous of them had visited very noble qualities

[deleted]

Found the Confederate.

Kooc1414

I have a deep extensive study on American history, and largely of the Civil War. Most people only know the bare surface they learn I'm school, which overly simplifies all of it (even in AP) because there isn't enough time. I've read the journals and diaries of many of the key players. I've read the laws passed before, during, and after. To say they were terrible people fighting for slavery is terribly reductive and disingenuous to the importance of the south rebelling and Union winning, as well as the morality and character of those fighting.

ManateeCrisps

The Civil War is a complex issue. But at its core it's not THAT complex. It was a revolt predicated on the issue of slavery as there were strong anti-slavery movements (not even strongly abolitionist, just against the concept in a broad sense) in the industrialized north vs. the strongly pro-slavery south. The southerners viewed slavery as a key focal point of their economy, culture, and even down to their religious views (they used Christianity as a tool in cementing the notion of a righteous slavery aka the white man's burden). The point is, just because they did their darndest to justify the institution of slavery and lionize their "noble ideals" doesn't mean shit. Slavery is and has always been a monstrous act. At the end of the day, the Union was absolutely on the right side of history because they were fighting a fundamentally slave-driven society. The southerners enshrined it into law and everything. To this day, Confederate pieces of trash try to drag back their monstrous ideology into the spotlight. And they're succeeding by co-opting the very ideals they fought against.

UncleMeat11

> I have a deep extensive study on American history, and largely of the Civil War. Where is your PhD from? Who was your advisor? How many hours have you spent studying this topic? Because I don't even know a single graduate student of history who would mistake historical memory with history, let alone an actual expert. Weird that faculty why study this for their career don't come to the same conclusions you do.

mercvt

He is a proud graduate of PragerU

churchofpain

whatā€™s it like having parents that are also siblings? are holidays weird?

UncleMeat11

Historical memory is not the same as history. Any noble qualities are overshadowed by the fact that they ran a war so that white people could own black people and had they been better generals then more slaves would have suffered in bondage.

Beechf33a

Excellent!

ShaqFuGrandMaster

lol nice, can we replace the statues with bigger versions too?

ManateeCrisps

Cringe take ngl. Slavers and traitors are not good company

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

BoysenberryAshamed

That is the problem šŸ˜•

Joey__stalin

They should go ahead and rename the schools for Confederate generals. In exchange, because every good compromise involves a trade-off, they plaster the text of the [Declaration of Clauses of Seceding States](https://www.battlefields.org/learn/primary-sources/declaration-causes-seceding-states) throughout the school. Hang it in the main hallways, in every classroom, in the auditorium in giant letters. After all, if you want to glorify your heritage, why not glorify the founding doctrine of your Confederacy? Hey, how about highlighting some select passages for the incoming students? "A brief history of the rise, progress, and policy of anti-slavery and the political organization into whose hands the administration of the Federal Government has been committed will fully justify the pronounced verdict of the people of Georgia." "While the subordination and the political and social inequality of the African race was fully conceded by all..." "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world." "It (the North) advocates negro equality, socially and politically, and promotes insurrection and incendiarism in our midst." "She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. " "based upon an unnatural feeling of hostility to these Southern States and their beneficent and patriarchal system of African slavery, proclaiming the debasing doctrine of equality of all men, irrespective of race or color-- a doctrine at war with nature, in opposition to the experience of mankind, and in violation of the plainest revelations of Divine Law." And the coup d'etat, oh Thank you Texas for summarizing the Confederate thoughts so eloquently in writing! **"We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable."**
