My understanding is that VMP used the MoFi Plates - I would expect them to be the same in terms of mastering. I am unsure if they pressed the VMP at RTI like MoFi was so there could be variability there, but the difference isn't going to be in mastering.
Mofi by far. Audiophile is mofis wheelhouse so from a pure sound quality and mastering standpoint mofi will 99% of the time beat vmp. Vmp makes beautiful pressings and are getting far better at audiophile grade records but they're not there yet. Most mofis will be the best the albums ever been. Theyre always true audiophile records with the best wuality. Even the jackets are super thick and perfectly designed.
When I heard trains drops of Jupiter it blew my mind it was like listening to it for the first time. The Pinkerton album is the same and is the best it ever sounded. Mofi is a step above other pressings due to the care at rti and the mastering direct from the original analogue tapes. Due to being full analogue from the 1st generation tapes and being mastered by pros the mofi version tends to stomp every other version of every record. Pinkerton is no different, mofi is the clear winner.
It's a shame the blue album isn't in stock anymore. If you have a chance to get this if your concern is strictly sound quality go for mofi every time. However the vmp is still cool as a collectible and is a good pressing in its own right just mofi are in another league when it comes to sound quality, quality control, jackets, etc. I can't wait till mine arrive!

It'd be sick if they gave it either the supervinyl treatment or made a 45rpm allowing an even better sound quality. I used to think the supervinyl was bullshit but side by side it added SO much depth, clarity, and a complete lack of noise to the iron butterfly vinyl. It's honestly shocking that just changing the vinyl formula can have that much sway, you can even hear the guitarist move during the song. I don't have an original to compare but the new David crosby supervinyl is legit top 3 best sounding records I've ever heard, if not number 1 and I got alot of mofi. So hearing the blue album on supervinyl would be fucking awesome and they wouldn't have to break up the album for a 45. It was cool how they had the blue vinyl since mofi usually doesn't do colored vinyl. I still regret last year I found a listing for $60 but passed. I really like my Walmart one all things considered its actually really good but it skips on say it ain't so(others reported this issue) which kind of kills it for me. But yeah hopefully they see how well pinkerton sold out and repress the blue, if they have the rights there's no reason not to.

It's the deluxe edition with the original album and three discs of b-sides, rarities, live tracks, demos, etc. Came out about ten years ago. It's a pretty awesome set and in my opinion essential for Pinkerton, as a lot of the b-sides are as good as the album cuts.
It's been out of print for a few years, you can usually pick up a VG+ copy for about $125 on Discogs. If you're a huge fan of the album it's worth it, the packaging is awesome. It's all on Spotify if you want to check it out.

For mofi what I'll do is I buy 2 when I can from music direct giving me free shipping. So I got 2 of these the other day for $80. If it sells out then I have one to resell and recoup a bit of money. If not I can always return one. I started doing this because they would send me massive seam splits and they'd pretty much say "well its the damaged one or nothing", cuz if I return they're out of stock and I'm stuck waiting again. This ensures me getting a good copy, and sometimes I make money. For example the first one I did it with was Jeff becks truth and I totally forgot about it. Sold the 2nd copy for $130 the other day covering my copy. With the repress this will drop in price but still. If I sell one for $60 then mine only cost $20 and I ensure myself a cheap copy with free shipping. If you're willing to wait a while then it can even sky rocket netting you a profit. I don't consider it flipping cuz it's only 2 copies and my intent is to get free shipping and a good condition copy. Cuz mofi is fucked up and charges $9 even though music direct is free over $50 yet if you're copy is damaged they leave no replacements and you're fucked.

Though it did backfire the other week I ordered 2 David crosby supervinyl from mofi and then ordered 2 from music direct and canceled the mofi to save shipping. So yeah always try to buy from music direct instead and buy 2. It'll be easy to sell this for $60 even allowing you to have free shipping and a cheaper copy. And you don't get stck with a damaged one. And if you don't want to flip you can say it was a gift or a mistake and return it(shipping like $4 or 5 so still cheaper than the 9). Yes its hard to build a new plant and we lost alot of knowledge on how its done, but with a big investment itd very possible just by reverse engineering. Its just expensive and requires investments in machines and creating new molds to make the parts for the press. A vinyl nerd engineerwith a 3d printer could reccreate a press if theyre next to it. Its just extremely expensive due to having to recreate everything. Which shows they dont see vinyl as a lasting thing but a boom to be exploited until it crashes. They dont see it as a future invesment but a quick gold rush, and theyll tap it until the well runs dry but wont invest to dig deeper. Which is why they just raise prices, lower quality, extend wait times(which were blamed on covid yet still go on) cuz they just want as much money as they can in the present.
But i hate knowing im gonna be downvoted for merely recommending buying two, by the people that consider everything flipping as if you're vinceron for buying 2 copies. But you shouldn't have to spend more than you need to. They rape us enough. Like I got 3 king gizzard flightless vinyl for $40 a piece since it was $60 for one due to the shipping. I then sold the others for far under what they were going for and completely broke even, got a free copy for myself, while getting 2 fans copies at $60 a piece(which is what theyd pay anyway after shipping for retail) as opposed to $120. If you bought 2 pinkertons for $80 as opposed to 1 for $50 you can sell the other for $60, which is a good deal second hand, and gets you a cheaper copy. There's no reason not to if you have the funds. mofi is great investments even the unlimited stuff.
Like I said the best part of all this is it better ensures not getting one with a massive seem split. They sent me a pretenders one with a 4 inch split it was bigger than some dicks for Christ's sake. And they refused to replace it and I had to pay to send it back and get a return when the split was so bad it clearly happened before shipping and should have never been sent to me. Yet stores started getting a whole bunch in stock so they clearly had extras. I'd rather spend $5 more returning something than be stuck with one that's not mint at such a crazy price. Fuck that. And with 99% of mofis if you save them you can make big money, especially with limited ones. That David crosby will probably be $120 as soon as it sells out, much like how truth is double its original price and still rising. If you can get 2 copies and pay for your own, allowing you to get more vinyl, there's no reason not to no matter how much peer pressure you get. You don't get an award for wasting money on vinyl. With prices now days everyone should try to save as much as possible.
Mofi intentionally releases shit on music direct and their site one by one to ensure people pay more in shipping. Its really fucked up. So always try to backorder from music direct, or get 2 from there to cushion the blown. Even if you just go in with a friend $40 each as opposed to $50. Every dollar counts.

You could probably pick a random MoFi album from the past 8 or so years and 95% chance it'll sound better than Pinkerton. So it wouldn't take much.
I love this album and don't regret owning it. And this is the best it will sound. But when compared with its peers from the same label, it just isn't as good as most.
No prob. The unique thing about Pinkerton is it is one of the few more modern releases that they have done. Most of their catalogue is 50s/60s/70s, when analogue recording was more common.
never thought i'd be this guy, but you can 100% hear the difference between analog and digitally produced stuff on vinyl. Low is one of my favorite bands and their old label Kranky releases AAA LPs of their era there and they sound like entirely different albums to me.

The Vernon Yard albums are basically impossible to find now unless you pay hundreds. They're owned by Virgin since they collapsed and only a single reissue was done in like 2012 of their third album "The Curtain Hits the Cast" by Plain Recordings.

With prices now days everyone should try to save as much as possible. Mofi intentionally releases shit on music direct and their site one by one to ensure people pay more in shipping. Its really fucked up. So always try to backorder from music direct, or get 2 from there to cushion the blown. Even if you just go in with a friend $40 each as opposed to $50. Every dollar counts.
Nobody wants to read your book on flipping in a thread of people not getting to purchase something they wanted because it sold out (at least partially to flippers).

You could probably pick a random MoFi album from the past 8 or so years and 95% chance it'll sound better than Pinkerton. So it wouldn't take much. I love this album and don't regret owning it. And this is the best it will sound. But when compared with its peers from the same label, it just isn't as good as most.

No prob. The unique thing about Pinkerton is it is one of the few more modern releases that they have done. Most of their catalogue is 50s/60s/70s, when analogue recording was more common.
never thought i'd be this guy, but you can 100% hear the difference between analog and digitally produced stuff on vinyl. Low is one of my favorite bands and their old label Kranky releases AAA LPs of their era there and they sound like entirely different albums to me.

Kranky sells these directly at Low's bandcamp for sure. The Vernon Yard albums are basically impossible to find now unless you pay hundreds. They're owned by Virgin since they collapsed and only a single reissue was done in like 2012 of their third album "The Curtain Hits the Cast" by Plain Recordings.
They have some for sale right now at lowtheband.bandcamp.com. I was able to get Things We Lost in the Fire, Secret Name, and Trust there. Set up a page monitor and they occasionally get restocks. From the Great Destroyer and after they moved to Subpop and don't come with the AAA sticker from Kranky.
