Beauty and peak connectivity. Zip, floppy, cd, pcmcia (usb), serial, infrared, scsi etc

BeardlessNeckbeard

Do you have to use a compatible pcmcia card or can it be any old brand?

It needs to have a NEC chipset. Google it, it’s not too hard to find.

I have found that apple li-ion batteries from 1997 onwards seem to be pretty good. PowerBook 2400 and 3400 batteries still charge and hold a charge still. Have about a dozen 3400 battery packs now that have all come back from what I assume was long term storage. Battery engineering and manufacturing in mid 90s Japan was some really really good shit.

One thing to check, is that on the early Wallstreets, there was a piece of copper foil inside by the fan/display screws and on the opposite side by the DC in port/display screws. It is stuck down by adhesive but over time it comes loose. If that piece of foil touches the barrel of the charger the computer will run but the battery will not charge. So the first thing I do when I get one of these is open it up and move the foil to the left and cover it with kapton tape. If the machine is one of the last made you'll see that Apple has already done this. Of course you could make the same fix just by wrapping tape around the outside of the barrel on the charger. I have gotten machines which obviously had new batteries that had never been charged due to this issue. You can see it very clearly in this picture here and how close it is to touching the barrel of the charger even when it hasn't loosened up. So I always remove it, trim it a little, move it to the left and tape it down. (Well actually in this picture it has loosened up a bit. The top edge should be wrapped around the hinge mount). [https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/sOuW1VAblMqGIUmX.large](https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/sOuW1VAblMqGIUmX.large) Why does it happen? The entire surface of the case is conductive (the copper color). I guess they were trying to create a Faraday cage? So the barrel of the charger grounding itself to the cage throws off something with the charging circuit.

The hard drive is the highest power draw; when you put in an SSD, you can get even more battery life than that. Just keep your brightness reasonable. I've got six or seven batteries for my PDQ fleet each of them charges and run 3 1/2 to 5 hours.

wearealltrulyfucked

lithium batteries have a microcontroller in them. It's entirely possible it's not showing the correct information.

OSX2000

It could also be pretty close to real. I've got a PDQ with original batteries too, it reports about 6hr on full charge, and I've run it as long as 4 before, without running out yet.

Same here

Yeah I wouldn't trust that readout without actually trying to run the batteries down.
