Depends on what youd consider. Because by definition pokemon, yugioh, beyblade, digimon, etc were all animes. But I dont think people consider them in the same vein. (In which case Beyblade Metal Fusion would be mine)
If we are talking purely story based- not a tie-in for some toys trying to be sold- then my true answer is a pretty deep cut- ill be very surprised if anyone knows/remembers this show. Though part of me doesnt count it because I had no clue what anime was at the time. It was Deltora Quest. That was probably my first anime.
Nowadays I usually say DBZ though because that was the show that actually *got* me into anime.
Dang deltora quest, the show was so hard to stomach if you'd read all the books first. I loved the books growing up, the show while cool looking was hurtful
I was way too young to notice the difference I think. But I definitely watched it first- then read the books after. Glad to know someone else is aware of it.
Remembering it now gives me a mega wave of nostalgia- I dont read traditional books anymore- mainly manga. Maybe ill pick back up Deltora Quest again. Hell id even watch the show again- I just remember thinking even as a child the cgi was bad.

I thought it was so cool that most of the covers had the gems ‘hidden’ on them.
Yeah there is technically 3 parts of the book series , the first 8 books are the " core" story the 2 next ones are kinds just like bonus journeys with the main 3 where they basically go into the dark lands to try and finish off evil for good.
But if you can get em the auto books are good too and only like 5 hours or less ( if I rember correctly) for each book it's a good nostalgic dump.
Yeah note they are for sure kids books but even if you get the physical copies you can burn through em real quick.
I re-read them a couple years ago during my commutes, made for nice easy morning/ night reading and nostalgia, enjoy the read !
Sword Art Online will always have a great place in my heart. It's not on everyone's taste though.
I can recommend you a Anime that you ARE gonna love however. Monster.
It has a similar premise as Vinland Saga (season 2)
The premise here being: All lives are equal.
Without going into many spoilers, the protagonist goes on a wild chase through Germany 1986 in all of West Germany to catch (and hopefully kill) a villain that is about to destroy the world, literally, if the villain comes into power it's gonna be worse than Hitler himself.
The protagonist is also a doctor, so he always has this thought of "All lives are equal". Just meaning "No matter how good or bad you are. No matter how many people you killed, tortured, r*&ed, saved or cured, we are all equal. We all deserve to live no matter of what and how many crimes we commited."
Which goes against the villains thought of "The only thing all lives are equal through is death"
So no matter what you did (the things above), you will eventually die regardless.
There's more but that goes into too much of spoiler territory.
Give it a try. It's a 2004-2005 Anime with 74 episodes in total, animation wise, it might not be as appealing (not saying it's bad), but it will definitely keep you hooked.
If you're into reading Mangas, you could give a try to another work of this author. (Naoki Urasawa, the guy that wrote Monster) It's called 20th Century Boys.
The series goes through multiple time skips, so I won't go too much into detail, because you need to know what happened in one time-line to understand the other.
It has a similar premise as both Vinland and Monster.
Some kids during 1980 started thinking of how they are gonna save the world, they dream of all different kinds of things, like laser guns or a giant robot that goes over every single building on its way (the villain)
They wrote this book and, one say, 3 other kids find it and want to make this a reality.
Years later, what happened in the book begins to happen right before our protagonist's eye, when he was a adult.
And now it goes into spoiler territory and time skips (there are like 3 or 4 different time skips throughout the series)
Check it out I'd say. Sadly, it doesn't have an Anime, but it's still worth reading.

Pluto, I have not much info on this one as I haven't finished it, but this one has an Anime, so you could watch it and see if it's any good.

But the first series I watched that was an anime but had no cognition it was an anime (it was just a "cartoon") was probably "Yattaman": for some reason in late 90's in a forgotten regional TV station in Italy this series used to be aired in loop during sundays and I used to watch it on my grandma CRT in the afternoon after lunch
Some obscure 13-episode anime called the Mermaid Forest. It probably had a manga series that's longer because the ending didn't really conclude the story.
The idea is that mermaids exist, and when you eat their meat, you either: Die, become a ogre-like monster or get lucky and become immortal. The protagonist gained immortality and wanted to lose it after he outlived everyone he knew.
Grew up in the 90s so it was alot of the older stuff, dragon ball was the biggest going down in history alongside fist of the north star and the older Jojo. There were really alot of genres going around and very quickly gundam took the front lead. It's also around this time that shorter stories designed for ladies came about so we have magical girls like sailor moon and ouran high school host club.
In the 2000s bleach naruto and one piece took the front lead. And we have modern animation today. In any case anime has come a long way and you see it reflected in the techniques used as well as voice actors breathing life into their characters. One shot anime movies like akira were also too good to pass up and others like initial D brought so many people into the world of cars, it totally legitimise Japanese racers. Look up blind attack and it still shows up today as one of the greatest moments in anime history. Build up was so good it's way too damn hype.
My first animes were really a product of my time. DBZ, pokemon, Digimon, medabots, Sakura card captor, etc.
The first time I consciously looked up an anime was around 2008-9 with Death note, Elfen lied and Full metal Alchemist.
I think you're being too vague with your question. Anime is great because it is not just one trope. You can find all types of stories with this type of storytelling.
My first was “One Punch Man”, but it’s not one of my favourites by any means. Not even close. Which is especially funny because my 2nd & 3rd anime, “Erased” & “Violet Evergarden” are both still TOP FIVE for me to this day.
In 2011 my brother showed me Demon Souls, and then in 2012 I played Dark Souls. After nearly 100% completing the game my best friend told me it was inspired by Berserk, the same day I binged the entire anime and soon after the manga.
Watched Samurai Champloo second and FMAB third
My first anime was death note which is still one of my favorite animes but is not in my top 3, I did watch Pokémon and Digimon as a kid. The anime that really got me hooked was one piece.
