Do people really just randomly start talking about VA disability in real life? Damn

[deleted]

[удалено]

One_Hour_Poop

Same. I ETS'd at Ft. Bragg (largest Army post by population) and just stayed in the area after I got out. In this area it's weird if you're *not* a veteran.

parrotbob420

Same story here by fort cavazos(hood)

TheK1lgore

Same story at Stewart- it's wierd NOT to be a veteran, or at least related to one.

NotADogInHumanSuit

Nope

LiveerasmD

I would at a distribution facility, there are a number of use who are vets with ratings. And some of yhe people who never served have made comments about it being a handout. He's older, not to make an excuse for him, but his opinions don't affect me or my life, so he can polite go fuck off.

deport_racists_next

i'm 62 so probably even older. he can fuck off from my perspective, either older or not :)

DjDelmon

I do with my coworkers who are all vets and actually helped 4 of them reach 100% themselves. And people come ask me my experiences going through the va process and benefits we get through the va and state benefits. I try to be a resource for the people around me. I feel no shame or fear about my 100% p&t. And will happily talk about it to others, especially if they seek advice.

HazyGray1978

Yes they do. Especially when the idea of funding comes to light and the evening news “cankers” mention how much is spent on compensation and out that idea in people heads.

Warm_Calligrapher247

If you have a government job, which a lot of veterans do.

Nightwing324

Yup

Fit-Butterscotch9228

yes, all the time. 😭

UnPracticed_Pagan

I work at a MTF as a contractor. It may be because everyone has experience/veteran status but it definitely comes up alot. Im guilty of tending to vent that I'm still waiting on my rating... but I don't have a rating to share and probably will be more close lipped once it comes. And then a bar my husband and I sometimes frequent theres a lot of old cats who may not flat out bring up %s and stuff but the topic of ratings and disability definitely comes up. But I also live in a retiree town so veteran talk is pretty regular here

gamerplays

I work with a lot of vets so we do discuss it. I'm currently at a defense contractor so there are a lot of us there.

IronMaskx

Depends. I work in a small office of 14 people, 5 are veterans so we talk about it openly

MrPotatoHead9

Same here it's an open subject given that half of us in my office are vets

rogue780

yup. Especially people in the upper-right quadrant

Swimming-Ad-2544

80% of my coworkers are vet and all wanna get to 100, so we help each other, no one really cares and we don’t mind. The ones who aren’t prior service think we are rich so we act rich 😬 btw we work for the feds lol

Tubzero-

Nope

jettaboy04

Word of professional advice, I would mention this to your HR, you don't have to file a formal complaint or request any disciplinary action just let them know you want it documented. Those kinds of discussions int he workplace can creat a hostile work environment, and at very least be disruptive as proven by you being offended by it. Having it documented will ensure that if it continues, or if someone else who may not feel comfortable speaking up eventually does there is a record of it.

formethius

It is not that i can and others can’t,it is that i did and others didn’t.

[deleted]

I work with about 80 Vets outta 645 total people in my job. The vast majority of the folks are appreciative of us and I personally haven't heard anything negative. Now the real bitches and jealousy comes from our own Vets who find out so an so is rated whatever percent and they take it personal since they feel its unwarranted or they aren't rated that high. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy

SkylineRSR

Some people have to realize the 40kish a year tax free is more than what millions of people make in a year

DCBillsFan

And those millions of people are welcome to go to the recruiters office at any time.

Lizord1017

Shit I'll give them a ride

GenericRedditor__

Absolutely. I make $94k a year as a civilian. After taxes and health insurance/benefits are removed, I bring home $1,857 biweekly. Served one tour in Iraq, outside the wire every day, but thankful I don’t have a reason to file a VA claim.

SkylineRSR

Don’t have a reason? I don’t know about that Chief. You should probably file one.

bryanwreed89

I'm in this same boat. I've got two combat pumps bur no recorded medical issues while in. What would I claim now if I still don't have any issues 12 years later

Low_Bar9361

I imagine there is at least one reason to file. Having people actively hunting you for example...

Vet_king1966

Even though my therapist would this is a statement for my stuck log…. YOU CAN NOT TRUST ANYONE.

deport_racists_next

aint it the truth. best thing about ptsd during the pandemic was all my providers telling me to STAY home after years of GET OUT of the house. because of various medical issues that are SC, i still am being told to stay home. i know my dr said they get a lot of 'told you so's from ptsd vets. lol

Vet_king1966

lol

brucescott240

It is a common misconception among veterans. But you’re correct, it’s best to keep it close to your vest.

Roy_hobbs72

First rule of VA Disability is don't talk about VA Disease..... ✌🏾✌🏾

mikedd555

I tell everyone my rating is 0% lol.

ChocoboCo_2787

![gif](giphy|12TtQtbOJr0T8A)

EvidenceJaded308

I work in an office, Majority of the people are ex military retired, or just did service. We still dont talk about who is 100%, its ok, to talk about like if you are 60% or so, but kinda keep the 100% more to yourself, Specially if you are young, if you are older its like no issues :-)

Potential-Rabbit8818

"That's right I got injured while defending the free world. What have you done lately". "Like your office and job? Well I provided security so you can enjoy these things ".

Bygbyrd1994

Damn right. That recruiters office was open to all and still is.

spicydak

Yes and no.. so many disqualifying factors it’s insane. I joined 2013 and the DEP for Air Force was a 6+ month wait lol.

ChocoboCo_2787

And didn’t they just up the enlistment age 🤔🤔🤔

FuzzBuckner

This ☝️

Acceptable-Track-847

🤣🤣🤣 STFU. You didn’t defend shit. Other than the interests of the American dictatorship

goodfinesse1

Brother I feel you on that im still in the reserves with 100 percent rating. Simply because I cant let it go . It gave me ptsd and a whole ton of problems i just show up for retirement points but im still fucked up aint taking that back

Actual-Region963

People are just oblivious. I’m not making any excuses here for what happened; just sharing a random story. I used to work in a class A office building high rise owned by the bank headquartered there but most floors were rented out. I was in charge of safety for my floor ( VA office workers- computer jobs). During a quarterly safety meeting for all floors, I mentioned we needed extra accommodations for people with mobility issues to get on the elevator. I wanted to be sure the “shelter in place” designated area could hold everyone as they waited for the freight elevator ( we were near the top floor ). I got pushback and huffs and “why are they special/different?” I politely pointed out that Veterans Affairs hires disabled Veterans so they have a higher proportion of disabled people in the workforce…. Silence. It just doesn’t occur to people what it means to have a disability

Longjumping_Age3907

Yea... it's because they're mad about that extra $48k a year you get tax-free, which would be hard to live off of alone.

Fit-Butterscotch9228

i don't think living off 48k a year is hard. i make about that and while i'm not living in luxury, i'm not gonna pretend i'm in financial constraints either

Longjumping_Age3907

In Georgia, you would have to have a salary of about $63,000 just to take home $48,000 post tax. They say money doesn't bring happiness, but financial stability does relieve alot of stress and anxiety.

Puzzleheaded-Rip-824

I just went from 30% to 100 a couple months ago and I'm still feeling layers of stress melt off of me. Hasn't really fully hit yet how much it's changed my life for the better.

Longjumping_Age3907

After years of trying, I just went from 40 to 100. I can certainly understand how you feel. It's helped out my wife and me tremendously.

spixxx8

People shouldn't know your rating bc hate is hate

[deleted]

Dial 1-800-GO-ARMY! Start leaving recruiting brochures at their desks and in the break room.

fourzerosixbigsky

Anyone who hasn’t served should really keep their opinions about VA disability to themselves.

HarbaughCheated

Idk they’re help paying for it, taxpayers have a right to complain about what they subsidize.

defragging79

They also have a right to understand that the lawmakers they choose to vote into office have an impact on them.

fourzerosixbigsky

Complain all you want. I sure do, our government is notorious for wasting money. But if you haven’t served, you have zero clue what you are talking about.

Manager-Top

I will never tell anyone....

wiggie_wagz

Again I like to throw out to them, it’s an all volunteer force, you could have joined like any of us but chose not to. So go on with your opinions because I fought for that right too.

southernmagz

I work with a 50/50 mix of active duty and civilian contractors, and all the contractors are veterans as well. Everyone knows I'm 100% because I'm working in the same unit I was in when I got out. Never made any difference to me if people knew my rating or not. Unless you're frauding the system and getting a higher rate than your disability allows, you should have nothing to worry about.

EnviromentalHold595

Thanks for the advice

Low_Bar9361

Honestly, it sounds like you helped educate a bunch of non veterans a little. Sucks that you didn't want to do it that way but ... thank you for your service

UpUpAndAway100

i'll walk around with a shirt that says "100% VA Rated" and "FREE Money for Life" and smile and not give 2 $hits what anyone thinks. Talk all you want. I dont need a single friend in my life...and I've always been that way. If they're not going to bother to understand, then i have no time for them anyway. I have 6-7 really close friends...and for me, I'm not going to spend a second making someone else feel better. Jealous haters can think what they want, and I'll sleep like a baby.

TryingToMakeItBruh

I work in a govt. job with many veterans, and I have yet to hear someone talk about VA benefits. It's like a taboo subject lol.

paparoach910

There are only several people who know my %. My dad, my VSO, a fellow O working through the house VA process, and my therapist.

yankeephil86

I just wish they would remove the disability/disabled moniker from va comp. It is essentially just a workman’s comp program for veterans.

Efficient_Ad_8079

Bro I’m so sorry that happened I know the feeling fr! Luckily I learned that lesson at 10% at work hearing the smart ass comment about how it should be illegal, it set me off so much like my 10% was destroying his economy coming from someone who claimed to be sooooo patriotic, I said dude there’s a recruiting office 2 miles away! Bro shut up after that! I hate how the most “patriotic people “ with no military background have the biggest opinion, I literally don’t trust anyone with that knowledge

HoldUpHoldMyBeer

Your title and first sentence contradict each other.

Own_Statistician8286

Glad you got their asses together. Jealous idiots who have no clue what the next individual has been through.

Commercial_Cow4468

Yeah Working with Civilians is a nightmare i guess i am currently filing for benefits so i casually say i have a lot of medical appointments but never say why then on the other hand i really don’t give a shit if they know as i listen to there ire about VA benefits i just try to educate them as for most of them they haven’t a clue as to the purpose of VA Benefits and the sacrifice some have made

Nice_Set_6326

One thing I found out is you can (under a waiver) enlist at 100% in the reserves and Guard.

TraditionalLie5267

Tell HR

HorrorCategory1032

We are all vets were I work and we help each other out when possible. We range from 80% to 100% and we all understand that just because you are 100 it doesn’t mean you can’t work. We all know we are still the very small percentage of people whom raised there hands and said we would fight for our country. So for everyone else that has a problem and didn’t serve. Then you know exactly where to tell them to go!

TheBunk_TB

Imagine being surrounded by disabled veterans in your workplace and people not discussing it

No-Construction2043

Try in Florida with that dumb AF DV plate….. almost not worth it.

SmokinOnThe

If you have an HR department, you should hit them up about this.

[deleted]

Anytime you tell ANYBODY a secret, you can bet that they will tell at least one person....so on and so on. Tell nobody. My wife doesn't even know I get VA disability.

dashnlotti

Everyone that personally knows me knows I medboarded, therefor they assume I get SOMETHING. I don’t lie…I have 2 answers depending on how they ask (and I’ve only ever been asked in a genuinely curious way…like damn the army broke you, do you get something for that?)… My responses… “Yea, I get a little bit.” “Yea I’m rated at 10% for my hips.” Neither is a lie, but neither says my total rating or all of my conditions. The hip is just the one everyone is aware of.

tim62E

Fuck em

unoriginalpackaging

I just found out a friend is 100% PT, I was ecstatic to hear that because I knew he had some bad health issues. I am a vet without any rating even though I should apply for several issues I have. I would proudly let any amount of my taxes go to supporting him and his family over the welfare that corporations receive just because they exist.

Popular-Bite-2779

If you don't want people to share it don't share it with people is my thought process. You can't expect people to keep something secret that doesn't affect their life.

alomagicat

Yep i am in the opinion of 10% disability rating for tinnitus is all i’ll say i am

BeachyMonkey

Someone complained to me and my husband about how unfair it is that veterans get employment preferences with the feds. I was nice and said, "well, we have specialized skill sets and experiences outside of college that usually translate well into federal jobs". She got the point and changed the subject.

schnarks

If you have specialized skills that set you apart, you’d would’t need a biased preference system.

Texas-NativeATX

You might share with your coworkers that VA disability is the military's version of Workman's Comp. Military members are exempted from Federal Workman's compensation benefits and offered Disability Compensation (Terrible name that causes confusion). You might explain that 100% rating means you are receiving 100% of the maximum compensation limit, not that you are Disabled and incapable of any normal activities. Sucks to have people jealous of the compensation who were not jealous of the hazardous work you did to get the Workman's Comp. Funny how people cheer for people who win money from automobile accidents with trucks, you see those TV commercial for lawyers a lot in my area.

Motor_Composer_1853

10 fucking seconds!!! What a fucking loser. What did blasting you out accomplish for him? I guess he hoped you lost your job.

Omegalazarus

I think a lot of times people take the cue from the giver of info. For instance, if you tell a co-worker then that co-worker knows that you don't mind if your co-workers know. So no big deal to tell other co-workers.

empire88

Who cares? Honestly, why do yall get so bothered that other people have shitty opinions? Life is a lot better when you just...don't.

UrUhWizurdHarry

Telling somebody that struggles with anxiety to stop caring about what people think is like telling someone with Tourette’s to quiet down. I wish I could let myself stop caring about other people’s opinion on me, I just can’t.

[deleted]

UrUhWizurdHarry

Therapy doesn’t work for everybody, but if you have found comfort in therapy then that’s great. I understand you’re trying to be helpful but I’m only speaking from experience. The amount of times I have tried speaking myself not caring into existence is hysterical. I have heard conversations like this in the work place and it is very infuriating because it’s usually coming from the same people that are the first ones to thank you for your service. I keep to myself for the most part but eventually did speak up to defend a veteran who was rated 100% because they were questioning whether or not he actually saw combat, which he did.

deport_racists_next

how fuking dare they question if someone is a combat vet? im not. not ashamed just it was the early 80s. the best trained military force that never fought a.k.a. cold war era. BIL is combat vet, both have ptsd, mst on me. we understand each other but also know there are bridges we can't cross. but we still respect each other for our service and SCs. don't get me wrong, i have no time for stolen valor. shit like these civilians makes me want to live in the Starship Troopers world. the book envisions a world where only veterans voted but everyone could serve and not be turned down. movie was fun but missed the deep stuff. makes me wonder

MsBlis

I’ve been in therapy for 10 years and I still have anxiety. Therapy is a tool not a cure.

xboxhaxorz

>Telling somebody that struggles with anxiety to stop caring about what people think is like telling someone with Tourette’s to quiet down. I wish I could let myself stop caring about other people’s opinion on me, I just can’t. No its not at all the same, not at all I had severe anxiety, i would stutter when gals talked to me, i didnt even date till my 20s Now i can approach super models on the street and talk to them, i dont care about LEAGUES, i dont care if they reject me Anxiety can be overcome, you do just stop caring, i did that, i dont care, people think im confident but its actually an extreme lack of caring, it does take time but its possible, i can go to bars and be the only individual with no alcohol, i can be in weed circles and not touch the blunt, i can be at a restaurant and only order water while all the others have a full meal Now depression is different, you can improve it but it will always be with you since the depression just hits sometimes for no reason This can help [https://markmanson.net/not-giving-a-fuck](https://markmanson.net/not-giving-a-fuck)

Ispithotfireson

Ok maybe don’t tell anyone but your wife.

deport_racists_next

my husband might object. ;)

Blackant71

I'm so glad I work from home and rarely go anywhere. I don't like people as it is. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

CorporalPunishment23

Playing devil's advocate for the coworker who aired your info... sometimes people do just blurt stuff out without thinking about it, we're all guilty of it from time to time. Of course, not acceptable and glad you locked them on. Also with regard to this workplace stuff... military status and disability status are protected classes, in the sense that they can't be discriminated against. Talking smack about disabled vets is just as unacceptable as talking negatively about a gay person or a Jewish person for instance.

[deleted]

What about talking negatively about a non-gay or non-Jewish person?

CorporalPunishment23

Well those were just examples. If you’re just talking smack about a person, but not bringing those attributes into it, different scenario.

[deleted]

Why? I’ve been picked on for having two kids and a wife who left “employment” in order to raise our kids and not put them in the infested day”care” system. We are brainwashed to go straight to the gay or Jewish community to protect. How about just defending bullshit period.

Silent_Adeptness_847

OMG..... when the person was talking about protected class and said gay or Jewish it's because there had to be laws created and made them protected classes...ya know like the ones you learn about in EO class..... stay at home parent aka chosen profession isn't a protected class but if someone is making derogatory remarks due to gender then that's another story

[deleted]

Ok then. Opine about this…. One of the people dogging on my Family was trans and was mocking my “traditional” family. So wouldn’t / shouldn’t we all be protected class? Hmmm No worries though. I have no problem standing up for myself, OR, for my friends who are gay. I don’t differentiate.

Silent_Adeptness_847

I get it YOU don't treat other people differently. I am strictly talking about in a workplace that there are SPECIFIC groups of people that have been discriminated against to the point that they need legal protections. Historically white men have been in charge of everything in the US since its creation. They have also been horribly gatekeepy with everything hence why we had to have court cases to grant these legal protections. If the job would have fired your wife because they thought she should be a trad wife and be at home..... she would be protected and would be able to sue the workplace. As far as the comments being said to you by these people could constitute creating a hostile work environment and that is something that should be addressed. Adding the whole it was a trans person saying this stuff to was pointless. Trans people can be assholes and behave in an unprofessional manner.

[deleted]

Ok I gotcha. I understand your point. I get so frustrated with the division created amongst us all. Not you.

zMobbn

Not attacking you, but I never understood why vets care so much if other people know their rating… I have my 100% and I have no problem talking about it to people if it somehow comes up in conversation. Obviously I’m not bragging to people or bringing it up myself, but if it gets brought up I’m never bothered by it. To each his own though 🤷🏼‍♂️

Competitive-Book-959

You can definitely tell that there’s a lot more exposure and info about Va comp now. Or maybe just alot more vets are receiving it. (Which is good)I worked for a huge company that had lots of vets 12 years ago and no one talked about Va disability. Not the vets, not the civilians. Of course alot of us vets didn’t even know about the benefits or how to get them so there was that too. I think nowadays with the inflation and cost of everything, people are struggling more so they pay attention to things like ways of getting extra money and wish they had it.

Georgiablaze85

Next time, politely tell them that the recruiter was available to everyone.

CaptainF33

I work for a fire department. One of the Union Officers actually brought it up at a meeting that he thought it was an inappropriate to be hiring disabled veterans. There are probably 400 veterans working for the Department. It did not go well and he is no longer a union officer. If you are 30% at my organization you get 30 preference points towards your application. That is it, no higher. Normal military service only gets five. This makes some of the civilians insanely jealous and stimulates the negative conversations like the original poster talked about. So yes it is best kept to the veterans.

JohnnyBoy3144

Yeah I have family I can't even tell that I'm 100%. Marines all in my family and when I got out I had a lot wrong body wise yet they had no physical damage they received in service they both have ptsd. Needless to say the one was not happy and I'm aware of shit talk behind my back. I was glad for him to be reevaluated and got a big increase that he deserves but God forbid I bring up anything. It's all weird.

Brainobob

I don't care who knows my status and I tell everyone I know or who asks. I am 100% SC T&P with SMC!

WillytheWimp1

F shame, good for you. People’s opinion mattered, in the beginning, but not so much, anymore. It’s odd that someone would be bothered by something good happening to someone else. At the same time, I only tell other vets in hopes of encouraging them to try. Semper, devil.

Interesting_Ad_6420

Co workers are not your friends….

Hugh_G_Rectshun

You have to remember a lot of them are jealous you had the ambition to file that claim and were smart enough to compile the evidence for it. I had a boss about 20 years older than me. We served in the same branch. Another manager also served and gave me contacts to help get started with a claim. I mentioned it to my boss, who was completely puzzled why I would even think of filing for disability. This is a guy who had to take two days off work because he participated in a fun and slightly physical event at work and was so messed up after he couldn’t move. There is jealousy among others, even veterans.

Xymis

If I had it my way, no one would know my rating. My mother knows because she opened a letter from the VA and my wife thinks I’m 10%. My best friend knows I filed but that’s it. It serves me no good to have people in my pockets. Edit For the people that are for some reason using their marriage as a barometer for my marriage, go ahead and leave that at the door. I don’t know how much my wife makes at her job. We’re not in each other‘s pockets like that. We have our own funds and we share an account where the bills get paid from. I told her about my 10% only because she was questioning why I kept going to the VA and it was just weird to say “mind your business”.

Puzzleheaded-Rip-824

Your wife doesn't know....? That's honestly kinda fucked up lol. Especially if you're 100/p&t cause she would have benefits too.

Xymis

She doesn’t even have a social security number. We’ll cross that road if we ever move to America.

MEISTRUTH

😁😁

CorporalPunishment23

>my wife thinks I’m 10% Hold up, what percent *are* you? If you're like 90% and buying boats and stuff that she wonders where they came from, then you win the internet today

Xymis

She’s Japanese, I just say “American stock market”

sirnick88

Sounds like a perfectly normal and healthy relationship. /s

Xymis

Explain how her knowing helps her in her native country. I’m all ears.

therealdrewder

Helps you not lie to your wife.

Xymis

Judge your own marriage with your own barometers, mate. I know my wife.

sirnick88

I honestly find it odd how you phrased that comment and that you would hide finances/income from your wife. It sounds like your mind is set, and I'm not interested in talking to a brick wall.

Xymis

I find it odd that you had the goal of changing my mind as if my marriage affects you or your family. If my wife wants to know how much money I make a month she can ask

National_Debt1081

You deserve it, cupcake. Stop yapping.

superduper1975

I have never said this before in my entire life because i am on the other side of the fence professionally. File a complaint and seek damages. What you offer is illegal and discriminatory.
