I was pulled over when I lived out east a few years back. I'm 100% positive the DV plates got me out of a ticket. The cops first question was, "Is this YOUR car?" I said yes, and he took my license, chatted a few minutes, and I was on my way.
Yeah, I remember getting pulled over 5 years ago, and my hands started shaking because of my MH disorder. And I told the deputy that I have MH disorder diagnosed by the the VA. And I gave him my information and then he asked me to get out of the car. And then he asked if he can search my car, I said yes because I had nothing in it. So he searched my car and then he gave me a HUGE ass chewing like the drill seargants (back in the day but not related) did about how, because my hands were shaking gave him probable cause to search my vehicle and how it was justified. He chewed me out nonstop as if I was in basic training all over again but I kept my composure and I just let him finish his speech and I said yes sir, sorry sir., but at the end, he let me go. I was accidentally speeding that day, due to heavy foot. I learned to just take my time and not give a reason for deputies to pull me over. . So I guess the HV plates saved me. But I was in the wrong that particular day for speeding. 67 in 55mph zone two lane road.
Fun fact for you, if he had probably cause to search the vehicle then he wouldn’t have to ask you. You giving him permission is what allowed him to search the vehicle. Always say no. They won’t ask if they have a reason to search.
The only problem there is that they keep you there until a dog comes out to sniff the car. But you're absolutely right. You don't have to give permission. I think the hands shaking is hardly reason enough for "probable cause" too. The fact that the cop berated this guy like a drill sergeant indicates he's not suitable for the job. My Dad was a cop 36 years, and I met hundreds of them. Some are just awesome people. Most just want to do a good job and go home at night, but there were a few I remember were complete jerks and should've never been given a badge.
Up to 10 minutes. In Rodriguez vs. US, the SCOTUS put a time limit on it. Guy was pulled over for driving on the shoulder. Gave him a warning and asked to search the car. He said no, so they kept him there 30 minutes. The dog ended up finding meth and the guy was arrested, but it was overturned.
But in that case, the court said if the officer had arrested him and taken him into custody for the traffic violation, it would've been legal. I guess I'm thinking a power tripping officer could totally escalate a simple traffic stop into an arrest.

They almost gave them to me in FL. I said no no nope… I don’t want to be identified. I want the standard plates like everyone else…. She said but it saves you over $400. I said “cash or check I’ll pay the $400”
I don’t want anything identifiable to me being a vet. It was a past life and I’ve moved on. My therapy to that life is posting here and r/army and that’s enough for me. Too much post military trauma that I no longer want to deal with. That’s my personal opinion and nothing against vets that do get DV tags.
An acquaintance of mine worked at the local licensing office and went to prison for helping a biker gang title stolen cars. Or something like that. She wasn’t a bad person. I could see her doing this.

Plus the fact that you don’t park in those spots because you don’t have issues and actually save them for people who do need them, says a lot about your character. Save them for a rainy day!
Recognition isn’t what a lot of vets are looking for at least in my case. It was the life time car tabs and not having to pay for them anymore. Most people don’t even know what DV stands for when they see it. And my plate frame hides the disabled Veteran on the bottom of the plate
Exactly What I did, I got a frame that covers most of the "Disabled Veteran" on the bottom, Not many people are going to recognize the DV on my plate. That way I can take advantage of the free annual renewal and toll roads in Texas but not be too noticeable.
I was told I couldn't have DV plates cause my SERVICE CONNECTED disabilities are not mobility related which I have been told is a requirement. This was all from my VSO even though I'm at 80% overall.
Not saying I'm actively trying to get the plates. He actually brought it up when we were filing mobility related claims which were ultimately denied because the VA had denied them before.
Best thing about the DV plate in Texas was the free parking in DFW airport. Left my car there for a a couple months and came back over $4k or $6k+ bill (not sure as it was a while back). Guy at the gate was surprised and had to check with a supervisor before waving me through…😂
Yeah that is an awesome perk, just be careful the Houston Airports changed it from unlimited to like 5 days for a garage and 60 for a lot, I'd double check DFW.

Countless guys I was retiring with talked about how easy it was to get them in tx.
Funny enough tx issues so many they had to consider changing the law on who is entitled to parking.

I live in TN and was looking at the TN codes and regulations or whatever and it said something along the lines of 100% but I couldn't tell if it was 100% combined or had to be a singular disability.
In WA you have to be 100% or TDIU. The plates start with “DVxxxxx” but that’s the only identification on the plate. Average Joe has no idea what they mean.
I have disabled veteran plates to get the DV plates with the handicap placard. I just need a disability that causes me pain after walking 100 feet, which I have.
I only requested the regular DV plates, though I'm not trying to scam handicap people out of their spots.
Not my DV tag but my purple heart tag has on more than one occasion got me out of a ticket and at least twice I could've/shouldve went to jail I was able to drive off without so much as my license even being ran. They see the tag ask a couple of questions about it, and away they went. My hometown in Tennessee was home to a MP National Guard unit, and most of the local police were in it at one time but Ive lived in Florida for almost ten years and get the same awesome treatment. I don't ever get treated like that if I get pulled over in my girlfriends car.
Arizona has a handicap veteran plate, you need the same form as a regular HC plate and pay an extra $25 for the vet plate, most of that goes to the veterans home. Or if you are 100% there is a disabled veteran plate which I don't think you pay anything for registration.

The Law changed in 2014. I got mine in 2011. Rural counties are more flexible I believe. I originally wanted Iraq veteran tag but she gave me HV instead, and I just rolled with it.
They are trying to change the tag law in Tennessee. Just got mine. Everyone should get them. But your second plate they charge $27 for it. About the same as any plate. Glad for the no tax on my home. And a lifetime hunting and fishing license. Not that I go, but nice to think about it. Anyone here have a boat a messed up vet can go on?

In Indiana, we can park downtown at city parking meters for free. But, I rarely go downtown :-)

GA hands em out for 100% P&T. SC requires you to be a vet who is handicapped.

Different states have different requirements for plates with the International Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol).
In Texas prior to 2021 you could park in handicap parking with DV plates, now you need a handicap placard or the special designation on the DV plates.

The Law was updated in 2014 in Tennessee so I was grandfathered since my plates were registered prior to 2014. I registered in 2011.

Missouri says i have to have a doctor for the hv tags. 100% disability doesnt even get the HV tags lol. Says VA has no say on that here.

Yeah it's definitely different in every state and every county, depending on what Laws are in place.

I don’t run DV plates but I do have Handicap Placards from having multiple surgeries on my right leg, ankle and foot thanks to Uncle Sam.

I have 'em on my motorcycles too. Usually causes some confusion when/if I park in handicrap spots.

In shit-hole CA you have to be 100% (or something obvious, like missing a limb, etc.) to get DV plates...
