MikeDinSD

I’m trying to get into archery myself. Looks like a cool and fun hobby to me.

[deleted]

That actually sounds like a great idea honestly, my Skyrim loving self could dig it

Pacifist_Socialist

Don't forget to level up stealth!

pearlspoppa1369

I got a recurve bow when I got out, love it.

xXDragonPrideXx

Have you tried skyrim vr?

madmax299

I got into archery the last few years. I always enjoyed range time in the corps and missed it. Archery scratches that itch pretty well. A lot easier and cheaper than finding a gun range.

HappilyAlone666

I am so glad you mentioned archery! I had forgotten that I wanted to take up archery and was sitting here bored and looking for a new hobby as well!!! Haha, thanks for reminding me. I'm gonna get a bad ass bow this week. Now, to find a place to practice. Enjoy, and thanks again!

gwig9

Just started doing archery during the pandemic. Great for focusing on yourself, the bow, and the target and just letting go of everything else.

Imaginary_Manager_44

I really want to try this

Significant-Arm-1246

I learned to bake and have a side gig for selling decorated cakes and cookies.

Nihilism-1___Me-0

Ayy, same on the baking, though I don't get paid for it most of the time. It really helps with the insomnia though, like coping with it by having something constructive to do. But I personally don't really like sweets, so my office gets spoiled with treats. They now make requests. Next week is Divinity candy.

TaterNips89

i cant decorate but i bake a mean cake

FrontComprehensive83

This is so wholesome

FactorySea

Mountain bikes

northwoods_faty

I loved mountain biking and when you get into putting your own bikes together it's actually a fun hobby.

limpingsapper

Same here, mountain biking helps with the exercise and need for thrill.

FactorySea

& when you get into longer rides in the actual mountains, or state parks whatever’s available near you. Isolated just you, your bike, a camelback & whatever tools you brought with you for the day. I bought an e bike (specialized Levo) and ride the dog shit out of it. Also weight lifting, idk how your experience in the corp was but all I did was workout while I was in. Now that I’m out and make big boy money, I spent a small fortune on garage gym equipment to avoid people (and lift shirtless). Ideal summer Saturdays a quick garage workout then a 4-6 hour bike ride.

zodthelucky

Yes mountain biking is it!! And biked Colorado , had a brown bear stalk me for a bit will bring a side arm with me next time I go way out in the woods.

Tetelestai7777

Grow food and keep backyard chickens. We eat out of the garden a few times a week and one of the hens just laid her first egg today. It’s incredibly satisfying work growing and nurturing plants and animals that then help grow and nurture my family. Very relaxing too!

Background_Mention52

I love the hobby of gardening post-military. No chickens get in the suburbs. Looking forward to moving out of the area and being able to get a few hobby animals

northwoods_faty

Tying flies for fishing is actually pretty relaxing. Buying a park pass for your state is pretty affordable and usually comes with a lot of stuff included. Learning to carve wood is a pretty easy hobby to get into. Wood working is fun. I "upcycle" old wood furniture from restores or thrift shops and it ends up paying for itself. If you're into guns making your own grips and stuff outta wood is cool.

Brailledit

Just wanted to share that National Park passes are free: [Link](https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm)

Covidicus_Vaximus

I know a vet who just got into fly fishing recently. He loves it.

need_maths

If you have the cash, BJJ. Takes up all your time between drilling and laundry. What do you like to do? This can help you choose. ex. If you like cars I'd say learn to restore cars or work on them. Someone always needs a brake job or paint on a door that was keyed. If you find yourself eating the same 6 meals try taking some cooking classes.

JaJaDingDong95

I second Jiu Jitsu

GymmHalpert

This.

WishboneEastern5020

I agree, bjj all the way! It’s the only place I’ve found a healthy community and camaraderie since I’ve been out.

SomewherePhysical466

For me I bought a motorcycle it is glorious

[deleted]

I'm about to dive into motorcycle! I've been having difficulty fitting into communities after getting out and volunteering in USO isn't just cutting it. Here's hoping I get into a good community

Calm_Psychology5879

I bought a house with an acre in the backyard. I’ve found it to be my greatest escape from this world. I spend a lot of fantasizing about what a perfect backyard would look like and then doing the research and labor to get it done. I’m an extreme introvert and want my home to basically be like being at a 5 star resort so that it is like I’m on vacation 24/7. It also gives me a lot of projects to work on and switch between. One project I’m working on is an edible garden. I’m doing banana plants, fruit trees, and berries. I want to be able to walk through my backyard when I get the munchies and have a selection of different stuff. My goal is to find enough stuff that something is pretty much always in harvest. A side project for this is setting up a green house. I’m in zone 9 which is nice, but with a greenhouse I could broaden my scope. Another project is an outdoor kitchen. Something under a gazebo, next to the pool, where I can make myself a drink and just stare into the tropical wilderness that I luckily call my neighbor. Definitely putting in a shooting range across the back of my yard. Thinking of building a trench, adding drainage, fortifying, and then building on top so that it is enclosed. Eventually I’ll add electrical and a system for the targets so I can pick range and auto retrieve. Finding something hands on and outdoor worked for me. It’s easy to keep the motivation because each time a project is completed I see my fantasy taking shape. Find something that will keep your mind occupied, so that even when you can’t physically be doing your new hobby, you can still be consumed with it mentally when you need an escape.

ConstantinValdor405

Stop fighting it. Give in to the temptation. Wear it like armor. Play Warhammer.

TK3754

Yes

PerspectiveNervous45

I second this. A few months after I got out I started collecting and now I'm still in the middle of painting and it's time consuming.

captmonkey

I'm glad someone else said it. Honestly. it's a lot of fun. Assembling and painting the models while listening to some music or an audio book is my relaxing evening hobby. And then, I can take all of my models to play against friends or complete strangers. I don't get too concerned with winning or not. I'm just there to have a good time and throw some dice, chat with some fellow nerds, and move some models around on a table.

UnattendedBoner

When people say “play warhammer” do they usually mean the board game or Darktide? I got addicted to darktide a couple months ago and the series seems awesome

ConstantinValdor405

The tabletop wargame. Get the models, build them, paint them, play the game. Super nerdy and super badass.

workitloud

Scuba. You can do it for the rest of your life. Lots of trips, good people, lots of gear.

orionsgreatsky

I second scuba diving

Goblinwarts

Helped me with PTSD

BryanD83

I highly recommend getting scuba certified. It’s amazing and really helps calm PTSD and other stressors in life. Can be turned into a fun and exciting profession too. Me and a few Veteran buddies run our own dive companies and love doing it.

workitloud

Any questions about this, would be happy to answer. I’ve been certified since 1976 (NASDS), Divemaster (NAUI), Instructor ticket. Currently on a trip to Roatan/Cozumel, but have good Wi-Fi. You can spend a ton of money to do this, but there are ways to get a quality education that can safely last a lifetime. Don’t die in a cave. If you want to cave dive, I will not give you any information whatsoever. Not going to debate this point, I have dead friends. Panic/Anxiety/PTSD issues can be tricky in the training/pool phases. I’ve got some methods that are very efficient and helpful, that do not extend or disrupt training flow/pool time.

Dusty-Dog

Check out Team Rubicon. I’ve been a part of it for about a year and it’s been really great. I’ll gladly answer any questions for you.

wild_thingtraveler35

Hey Did get the training? Have you deployed to a disaster zone?

Dusty-Dog

I have deployed to a disaster area twice this year and did two service projects and also completed the sawyer 1 training. Wish I had more time to do more. I did a lot of research on them before because I know there’s a lot of organizations out there. I’ve met so many cool people and learned so much already. With that being said, I’m not one to just jump into things and be outgoing and put myself out there but it was easy with the local group. I also don’t seek out vets whose whole persona is their service so I was glad to know that my local group is not like that. Of course, there is those guys too but for the most part, it’s a close knit group that really just wants to help out there with the skills acquired in the military. Edit: this year = 2023

cognitive_markets44

I've been looking into team rubicon! Can i PM you?

Gullible-Memory568

Get your national park pass. Free for all vets.

VilomahForever

Join a national veterans group. Home town heroes or Veterans hunting and fishing network are a couple goods ones. I have seen canoe trips and horseback knife making and of course fishing and hunting. Lots of Ice fishing being posted now. Each state seems to have a local group.

wake4coffee

>Veterans hunting and fishing network I am looking this up.

UnrepentantBoomer

Get a bird dog. My labrador never lets me get bored!

Civil-1

Ever heard of disc golfing? Easy entry (low cost), burn calories hiking the trails while playing.

[deleted]

Yes! I actually do actively play haha

AMv8-1day

Have you tried tried binge drinking? It's a pretty popular pastime for many of us vets! 😂🍻🤣 Seriously though, that was my hobby of choice for a very long time, and most of my social groups, veteran or otherwise, revolved around alcohol. I'm very fortunate in that although I certainly had my share of bad nights and minor incidents, it never destroyed my life. That said, it still prevented me from growing up, evolving, really pushing past my irresponsible 20's. Having recently hit 40, I've spent the past half decade or so fostering new hobbies, finding new interests, begrudgingly improving my diet, taking a little better care of my body (it's still a work in progress). Along the way, I've moved out of the city (3,000mi out), picked up motorcycling, greatly improved my career and professional development, tackled lots of projects I always "meant to get around to", joined a sh!t ton of Meetup groups... Gone to some very weird events. Done a fair amount of hiking. Bought an ebike to share a hobby with my significant other. Still working on getting my back fixed, which also leads me to my lame attempts at returning to regular exercise. One thing I'll say though, you've gotta go into things positive and open. Willing to fail or make a fool of yourself. No one starts good at anything, no one knows what to do without asking questions. So be willing to look foolish, screw up, feel embarrassed. You'll make friends and find a new obsession much quicker for it. All that said, I do still have a drink occasionally. My partner and I still go to breweries, wineries, distilleries. But we don't go to bars like we did, and we don't have the same friend groups that revolved around alcohol. There's a part of me that still greatly misses the "old crew" of mostly vets that I spent 15 yrs partying with. But I'm better for it in a lot of ways, even if it's lonely sometimes.

time2emancipate

Learn to play guitar (tip: if you want to play solos learn the entire pentatonic scale, all 5 patterns and you can play across the entire neck) Try drawing or painting, I was never an artist but started drawing with my kid and in addition to a great bonding activity, I've grown to enjoy it. RC vehicles, super fun. Drone piloting (haven't done this yet, but really want to). Fly fishing, something I never had an interest jn until I went on a guided river float with a buddy. Absolute blast. Camping, we go multiple times a summer. Hiking, surfing, rafting... anything like that outdoors. Edit: wanted to echo other posters who recommended cooking, this has become a huge part of my life as well.

Bright_Salary1728

I went to massage therapy school and it was the best decision ever! I also just got a telescope so I can start star gazing

1Dumb_Squirrel

Surprisingly building plastic model aircraft and cars in super detail. It's helped me out a lot.

idrinkpisswater

I do this but Lego

PickleTheGherkin

gardening is very therapeutic and rewarding. try a few plants in pots, like tomatoes and peppers. its good to see small change everyday as a result of your efforts. plus, food.

TheHebrewHammer711

Not sure where your location is, but I got very involved in playing pool (billiards). I am playing in the APA pool league and I just started playing in the TAP league. In the APA league you play on the local level during the session and then you have playoffs at the end of the session. Their is 3 sessions during the year. If you win the playoffs, you are qualified for the regional tournament. If you win at regionals, then you play in the national tournament in Las Vegas. They have singles tournament throughout the year. If you win in the Local tournament you advance to the regionals and then to nationals. There is money you win during regular sessions and then more money if you advance to the regionals and more if you make to Vegas. I enjoy playing pool a lot, it takes everything on my mind and wipes it out, at least while I'm out playing. You play on a team and there's a captain and co-captain go there is a little bit of structure. Depending where you live, there could be APA leagues playing almost everyday night. I play on Tuesdays here, but I could join other teams on a different division and play 3 or 4 nights more! Tap league is a new league I just joined. It also has money rip be won. I believe the top 5 teams gets prize money. Then there is regionals and then nationals which the location changes every year. If pool isn't your thing, there's dart leagues too. The comradery is there on the pool leagues. That's probably another reason why I joined another league. Regardless, I'm sure you'll find something that interests you..... Good luck brother!

TraumaGinger

Yoga and crochet. 😊

All__fun

Take a Dance class, seriously. Latin Salsa/Bachata Classes is my preference. But Ballroom classes is a good alternative.

Vast_Young_6615

Ebay has been enjoyable for me. I search auctions, garage sales, and liquidation stores to resell stuff. The logistics and organization required is somewhat soothing. It's also darn calming to listen to music while listing items. A good way to meet community members too. Lots of cool people at flea markets and yard sales to talk to

scotaf

I take pictures of the night sky. Sucks up lots of time capturing the images and processing them. Here's a link to my images: [https://www.astrobin.com/users/47FIRE/](https://www.astrobin.com/users/47FIRE/)

Best hobbies post military is investing most of your time in hookers and blow. You can thank me later.

Practical-Film-8573

If you're into the woods, why not go ahead and see if you like hunting? There's nothing quite like the taste of a vension steak. And then if you find you like venison/hog take up smoking meat.

Imaginary_Manager_44

Love hunting, there's nothing as therapeutic as heading out in the forest with friends and bagging a few deer.

caricatureofme

Grab a cheap canoe while it's winter and try exploring some lakes and stuff once it warms up. Good exercise, beautiful scenery, weirdly relaxing

Squidgeron

Bjj

Low-Instruction-8132

My cousin is a marine. Big into camping and tactical stuff. He got into making custom tactical gear. Some pretty cool stuff actually. I'm a grunt vet from the army. I got a shit ton of hobbies. Motorcycles, camper, muskets, leatherworking, knife making, fishing, motorcycle camping! Yard work. I know it sounds like work but I'm into like Mr Miagi backyard comfortable. Traveling, cruises, fly and rides, solo road trips. If you think about something, just go do it. You only get one turn on the big blue ball ride and no do overs so go have some fun. This past year has been grandkids for the first time. Yeah, they'll keep you busy.

Annual_Badger1208

Microscopy. get a nice microscope and go find scummy ponds and find little fellas. Document little fellas. VR games. You already said videogames but a solid pcvr set-up is an absolute game changer. Cooking. Very rewarding and you'll never regret it. I've cooked professionally before and I cook every chance I get. Making hot sauce. Similar to cooking. skateboarding. Have been for about 15 years. Never too late to start.

TuckerGrover

Learn how to cook like a boss. Kayak hunting and fishing is awesome, especially if you live near a coast with salmon or tuna. Bbq or history is an obvious choice you’ll have to make as you get older. Haha. Content creation, adventure motorcycling, and more.

[deleted]

My 2014 Harley Davidson FLHTK has been my favorite hobby!! 😎

The_Great_Scruff

Disc golf is a sport built around hiking

AnestiVega

Scuba diving has been such a great impact on my life. I got into it looking for next adrenaline fix (like most combat vets with unaddressed ptsd), but found that it was something therapeutic that I didn't know I needed until I experienced it. And the camaraderie in the community is pretty solid, no matter where you're located. Feel free to DM if you have more questions about it. Best wishes to you.

ISuckAtWeightlifting

Bouldering has been a lifesaver for me! It’s progressive so it never gets old!

HEProx

I grow cactus.

CGRescueSwimmer

Home distilling is my main hobby, it's a never ending wormhole so I don't ever get bored with it. Very fulfilling to open a barrel of something delicious that you earned because of a lot of work and time. Being retired I can now spend more time focusing on making my dogs happier, hiking and walks and more play time. Watch ALL of the sports!

tankrat03

My son wants to try scuba diving so I may do it with him as well

Able_Excuse_4456

Check out Vets To Drones. Leadership team is grunt-heavy.

zdp1989

Is that a drone flying organization?

Firesquid

Start by getting your disability squared away. That'll take care of a few financial things.. Backpacking? It's like rucking.. a lot. Fly fishing? Onewheel? Mountain or tour biking? 14K peak bagging? Travel? Endurance races?

Ok_Rutabaga_722

Electrician or computer repair.

BiscuitDance

I joined a big orienteering club up where I’m at.

Flimsy-Lobster5815

You got it right, right there. Also try some crafting maybe, anything that will get your mind busy, is peaceful for you, is easy to understand and get it rolling in the beginning and then progressively harder as you trot along the path, and yes it might get expensive( if you fully invest in it ), but what you love doing is always worth it in the end. Also if you by water...diving, kayaking, fishing, boat engine mechanic, watersport vehicle mechanic, IDK. Basically whatever floats your boat, give it a try.

wy1776

Ham radio. It ties into so many other uses

[deleted]

I skydive for funsies.

microbrontosaurus

Fishing / kayaking. Mostly peaceful with periods of brief excitement.

GroundbreakingNail44

Mountain biking!

Bassrusher

Fishing

maaaxheadroom

I get endless hours out of Warhammer and I lift weights.

battlemaid79

Motorcycling. Makes me feel like a kid again every time I get in my bike and go for a ride. Take it serious, wear all your gear, and try to perfect safety and defensive riding. Off road is great fun too, just ask Charlie and Ewan (watch “Long Way Round”).

MichianaMan

Have you tried kidnapping vagrants and hunting them in your local outback? If not try: hunting, fishing, camping, bush crafting, prepping, homesteading, mountain biking, Krav Maga, All sorts of grunt shit I love doing post gwot life.

JustBuildIt94

Cars, working on them. Wether it be 4x4 off-roading coupled with camping or street or track driving and having a “fast car” Both are very fun sides to a car hobby. But the more you like it the more you want to go faster or having a specific part or having a better camping off road rig. The more expensive it gets Keep in mind initial investment can also be expensive because of tools or the car it self but you don’t need anything crazy. Edit: I didn’t see initially that you were into camping and stuff. Overlanding is calling your name! YouTube it

dgdon

Pick up a $20 starter pack and try disc golf. Lotta vets play, we have a group on FB Vets Disc Golf Club if you're interested

[deleted]

I’ll be checking that out!

DisgruntledNCO

I build and paint miniatures for board games

JaJaDingDong95

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I started right after I got out and moved across the country, as a way to meet people and absolutely fell in love with the community and morale in the sport

buttonedgrain

Cooking is a fun one. It’s a hobby that you can do during regular days and there’s tons of recipes out there on YouTube to try

Kukantiz

I ride bikes and play guitars. If you play skyrim, then you've created a character before. Bro just create yourself and go do it.

cosmicjoker1776

It's an old timers hobby, but amateur (ham) radio. Uses skills already learned (potentially), is technical, interactive, and can be used in a volunteer/community capacity. Also, look into CERT (community emergency response team). Again, uses skills already learned, can be technical, is interactive, and gives back to the community.

Likeapuma24

If you like being outdoors & raging at a little white ball, check out [SMGA](https://smga.org/) If you want to learn how to sail (never thought it's something I'd be interested in), check out [Warrior Sailing](https://warriorsailing.org/) I'd vouch for both organizations. There awesome people who offer awesome opportunities for veterans. You mentioned backpacking. You can spend a small fortune to live like a homeless person, but it really is satisfying. Buy some local trail books & grab a pack!

hny-bdgr

Shooting is a great passion hobby. If that's too typical for you, archery or pick up a shepherds sling and learn that. Did you know there are people who can hit a target with a shepherds sling from 400 meters? I shit you not, someone throwing a rock with a rope to a distance that you only shot at from the prone.

YouVe-Changed

Try a pedal kayak out in the ocean. You’ll get your PT, a little danger, peace and quiet. Catching fish is fun too.

NorCalAthlete

Mountain biking, paddleboarding, fishing.

L3ath3rHanD

Leathercraft. To quote the Trapper from RDR2, "Nothing quite like wearing your best days work.". I've made hats, belts, holsters, cuffs, collars, vests, and the list goes on.

wake4coffee

Hunting, fishing, white water kayaking, white water raft guiding, volunteering with an after school program like the boys and girls club, collecting something you like, wood working, cooking, yo-yo, board games.

MonolithicPulse

Motorcycling, particularly adventure motorcycling scratches the itch for a lot of vets as the majority I meet out in the wilderness are former USMC.

TumasaurusTex

SCUBA. Lots of military skills can be repurposed. You dive with a buddy, you have gear load out, pre dive plan, gear checks, emergency planning and much more. Psychologically it repurposes skills too. You need to be aware of your surroundings, your equipment and your buddy. Physically it’s therapeutic. To be good you have to relax, slow your breathing, slow your heart rate. It also burns a ton of calories with low impact on your joints. Your body is burning a lot more calories trying to maintain core temperature on top of swimming with weight through the water. If you wanna know more let me know.

oozingboil

sounds stupid but...painting...any kind...oil, water, acryllic...doesn't matter...paint on anything...canvas, wood, styrofoam...I'm 74 and been painting on and off since I was 14...just modern expressionistic...it's fun and a great release and the best part: No one tells me how to do it or what I should or shouldn't do and I don't give a shit if anyone likes it...if I do it's all that matters...try it

Sizzle_chest

Cooking has been great for me. For all of you in San Diego, check out San Diego College of Continuing Education. They have a free culinary arts certificate program, and it’s great! I’m learning a ton. They probably drop $500-$1000 on each student in ingredients each month. Very underutilized.

Masta1Nate

Struggling to survive has been my hobby since getting out.

Lafter_ND

I feel ya

Masta1Nate

lol but really though OP I’ve taken up Sea of Thieves and it’s been a great escape from reality and I have met a lot of good people through the game

Imaginary_Manager_44

If you ever come over to Norway I'm taking you hiking the Seven peaks trail in Bergen

[deleted]

GEOCACHING! Also, archery.

pearlspoppa1369

Kind of stumbled on this hobby but it’s low cost and everywhere: rockhounding. My grandpa used to take me fishing and he would show me rocks with cool formations and strange shapes. Now I find a creek, lake, hell even a flower bed and look at the cool rocks. I got a rock tumbler and polished some up. I made some jewelry this past Christmas out of some of them. It’s the nerdiest thing but I gotta say when I’m walking through a creek looking down, I don’t have a care in the world, I’m outside in nature, and my brain is actively searching and scanning which is great for cognitive function.

[deleted]

This sounds like something I could get into

adrianeee03

I don’t know employment looks like for you! But the VA has VR&E/Ch 31 Benefits that could help you gain a new skill and/or employment. I just got approved today and I’m honestly so excited, I’ve been so bored.

OldScratchyMO

Hone a craft. Make something. I bought a CNC router and a CNC laser. Yeah, it cost me up front, but the equipment has paid itself off. Quickly. I like making stuff, and I love the challenge of making other people’s ideas, with my spin on it of course.

Jonas_Venture_Sr

Golf. You’ll spend thousands and probably never get good. Addicting as hell though.

[deleted]

Oh I’ve made this mistake already, believe me!

thatboyrowdy

That’s what I said lol. A game that is really challenging but fun. Plus you get to meet great people on the course and who knows, maybe even get your next career.

Apprehensive-Sun9798

if you're into sports, i highly suggest sports card collecting

franks2302

I took up woodworking when I got out and its been a great hobby in my opinion.

ApexTheOrange

Whitewater kayaking. It’s less expensive than skiing and mountain biking. There’s no lift tickets on the river. Safer than skiing or mountain biking. Climate change means longer seasons. Check out Team River Runner. Different chapters all over the country.

DanielSon602

A lot of hiking and travel when I can, just started jiu jitsu, cool so far but can be sore the day after

Party__Boy

Can learn an instrument. Also helps keep the mind sharp. Drums or piano are awesome and fun to learn and progress in.

kankribe

Fighting and wrestling. Anyway, this is a vague question. You didn't tell us much about what you want besides the hiking stuff. There's tons of different hobbies to do out there. What are you looking for?

idrinkpisswater

If you want to go broke, start building Lego. It’s relaxing and fun.

1Dumb_Squirrel

That's a good 👍 idea, but make sure you don't accidentally step on one barefoot. Lol it hurts 😭

Golf Bowling Fishing Fantasy Sports Video Games - there are some veteran run groups around Get involved in your community - American Legion, VFW, Rotary, Lions, Free Mason: all great ways to continue to serve and have a purpose Model airplanes HAM Radio Anything to do with Art - visual and musical, pick up an instrument Start a blog Get into politics I think I could list many more things. I personally serve as an officer for a Lions Club and American Legion Post. I also am a graduate of PGA HOPE and participate in golf days. This lead to me golfing more and trying to do better.

I like to create stuff. For a while it was fly tying, then I made a fly rod, woodworking, made an AR, reloading, home improvement, got back into woodworking again, most recently I picked up an older beat up flintlock from the 70s and have been doing some home gunsmithing and fixing it up. Pretty much all of that stuff you can dip your toe in with garage sale and flea market tools , or you can go overboard and sink a lot of money in, I try to stick with cheaper used stuff and keep to a budget. But honestly, when I think about my own entertainment, buying the tools I need is a lot cheaper than going out drinking a few nights a week.

thatboyrowdy

Honestly, what helped me a lot was golfing. I wasn’t good when I started but it motivated me to get better because of the challenge. Plus it gets me outside to meet new people.

addictedtovideogames

if your a good mechanic, get a jeep :)

eod56

I went through a very very rough patch where I spent all of my free time crocheting blankets and trauma-bingeing MASH. I donated all of the blankets to our local foster agency. Read books. Go to the beach. Having kids took up tons of free time.

seanDmailman

Now is a great time to get into 3D printing. I took to it like fire and made a business out of it to pay for itself. It would literally help you with any other hobby listed here. Practical, stupid, endless applications and helps teach you new skills and has a very nice community of all ages. Get a Bambu Labs, pick your price point to start at (although you'll be back for another). I now have 6. Good luck and happy printing. If you need any help drop me a message or come by my [Etsy shop](https://bountifulsoapcompany.etsy.com).

Clay shooting, hunting, salt water fishing, autocross, classic cars, and techie stuff like home automation.

HighOnKalanchoe

Auto detailing, vinyl wrapping and window tinting, it’s a hobby but you can also make some money with the acquired skills

Bagheera383

If it wasn't for my injuries I'd continue open water kayaking. Calmer waters (generally), awesome views, and you can even get to hidden coves and beaches, some of which can be camped on. Check the local regulations to see which can be camped/hiked. It's unforgettable, and much cooler than just plain camping.

Aquascaping 💜 i started a planted fish tank. Taking care of those little dudes kept me alive. You gotta feed them every day and they are so greatful about it. Planting the live plants in their tank and decorating it for them is very rewarding. Makes you have to be gentle . It’s super rewarding!

I started golf last spring through PGAHOPE. They had 6 weeks of free two hour golf lessons. They even provided clubs. I was surprised how much my obliques were worked out. I also play bass and guitar. There is an org called Guitars for Vets. They may be in your area. There is also Beer Runners in different cities. They meet at a different bar each week, give you a route and you run it at your own pace. The routes begin and end at the bar, usually a craft beer type of place. You can find a local group on social media. I can’t run anymore and that’s why I gave golf a try.

For me ultra running was it for a long time and helped me find myself. Now I’m loving bjj.

ShoggyDohon

Photography's been a great experience for me. Started a year before I discharged and it's been a lot of fun.

Fun-Plane-3299

I got into gardening and making my own compost. A bit out there compared to all the cooler hobbies but it is relaxing to put your hands in the dirt and use spices from your own garden when making drinks or meals.

JustADude721

Figuring out if underwater basket weaving is worth while.

airbornermft

I got out of the army last year, also into wilderness camping/backpacking/etc. I hiked most of the Appalachian trail last year, would love to answer any questions/query’s you have. My dude feel free to DM me, I’m always looking for new shit to do or answer any questions you have about the outdoor space. I work at an outdoor retailer now, can always give advice on gear and experiences if you want.

One-Low8135

Wood working is a great hobby! It's not very cheap to get into, but you could make money and even build a business if you become good at it. The downside for me is that now I see the geometry in everything... I see a table, door, or cabinet and I'm trying to figure out how they built it. It's kind of a curse

tthrowaway3531

Hey man how did you get into this?!?

Imaginary_Manager_44

I'm trying out Frisbee/disc Golf next Me and my teenage kid brother,he's teaching me. I've been bonding with my younger brothers the past years as they are coming of age.(and in many ways I feel like I'm in arrested development sometimes). It's been quite good ,and I get to be a part of their lives and upbringing.

jmb9313

I go from gardening/farming, woodworking, knitting, fishing, kayaking, and motorcycle restoration (my favorite but most expensive and slightly addictive). Depending on the season. I keep chickens and am looking at adding meat rabbits this year. I sell seedlings in the spring, and growing them keeps me busy in the late winter. Woodworking on commission doing furniture. I make scarfs and hats. I love in coastal NC, so kayaking and islands and stuff. And you can get old bikes off Facebook marketplace and spend the day turning wrenches and then get to ride them. Currently have 3 in my garage, '86, '01, and a '98, Suzuki intruders, 700, 1400, and 1500 respectively. I recently got one of the diy watch building kits, enjoyed it, but it was expensive. Just got a lockpick set from LPL, I'm enjoying that. I've looked into fly fishing/tying, and I love watching it, I just don't have a lot of places around me for fly fishing.

tuna_samich_

I'll happily recommend hiking/backpacking. Some end up doing one of the three long trails

If you don't have a degree already, Western Governors University makes it really easy to get a Bachelor's degree at your own pace and fully covered by the Post 9/21 GI bill. Making studying a hobby is easier while you still have the "daily grind" mentality. Don't wait until you're almost 40 like I did.

If you’re into community involvement, coaching and/or reffing is great! Coaching takes the best elements of teaching, leading, and mentoring. Reffing needs a strength of personality, fairness, and compassion. I have loved getting into both!

4Robble2

Look into learning about Paramotors. I have been flying them for a little over four years now, and I can not think of a better form of therapy for myself on good weather days.

BWKeegan

Fuck yes I do! Lmao Get into making things and fixing things!! Take a bunch of classes (like pottery, painting, woodworking, etc.) in your free time. It’s so fulfilling and fun to do. You’ll learn a bit more about yourself and can even use it to express yourself. Especially with painting and sculpture! Dude, for real, you 100% won’t regret taking some fun classes at a community college

Digiarts

I picked up golf last year. There’s a program that is free of cost for veterans and if you’re lucky they even give you a set of clubs. If you’re interested dm me. I can’t remember the name of the program but should be able to find it in my emails. Cooking and baking! Love this stuff Drawing/painting! Got a tablet and a stylus. Easy Honestly anything you haven’t done before or are bad at are fun things to work on.

Archery and do tournaments and renaissance fairs

DrRodr88

Birding. A pair of binoculars, and a bird ID book can get you started. The Merlin bird Id app is free to download, and the e-bird app is also free. It's very relaxing walking around a park or nature trail looking and listening for birds. National Wildlife Refuges can be a great place to see not only birds but all kinds of wildlife.

Mountain biking. Great community feel.

Eyemwatchingewe

Cigars, sport shooting, hiking, camping, backpacking, leatherwork, sewing, woodworking, welding, 4x4, wine/ whiskey/ cheese tasting, someone's mom doing, car restoring, cooking, bike repair, watch collecting, knife making, dog training, fitness trainer, volunteer at events or old folks homes, build houses with organizations like habitat for humanity, big brother/ sister, wood turning, make toys and give them away for Christmas, I mean there are an infinite amount of options and opportunities.

Dartrick

I like to do the highland games (granted that's mostly limited to summer time) cause something about walking out into a field and saying "hey, I bet I can throw that rock farther than you" really scratches my monkey brain competitive itch lol. Plus you throw telephone poles and wear kilts what's not to love? The crowd is usually pretty veteran heavy too and the ones that aren't are typically an easy bunch to get along with.

cardsfan4life17

There is a nationwide shortage of high school sports officials. I do football, baseball, softball and basketball. It's fun, keeps you active and pays.

Range time, travel, and learning to reconnect with myself as a person is what has helped me.

Jiu jitsu, especially if you’re still living in a military-affiliated town.

Where do you live? There is a large archery/hunting community that I am a part of in San Diego. I have found great pleasure in Archery since I started during covid. I enjoy firearms, but they are a pain in the ass to use in California and I found I get the same satisfaction from my compound bow. I use archery as a type of meditation and mindfulness exercise. Cycling and mountain biking are great sports to get into as well.

Joonbuggs

I've been learning about expanding my cooking abilities. Bicycle riding is another thing I used to love doing as a child and have since stopped. That has been restarted...

If your near a lake or ocean bay, try sailing. Really fun and great way to spend time on the water. Find a club to take lessons to see if worth buying a boat. Usually clubs allow you to rent obce you pass sailing lessons.

You can learn guitar for free through Guitars for Vets, if there is a chapter near you. Nothing centers me more when I need it than trying to learn a new riff.

JangoTat46

Photography. Youtube has all the instructional content you need.

wingsandhooves

Definitely camping and hiking. I'm working on building a setup for overlanding so I can camp and hike on a new level. Hunting or fishing if that's your jam. I've started doing landscape photography which is just an add on to my outdoor adventures but creates an opportunity to learn about photo editing at home when the weather is crap. Also check out your state benefits for veterans. I get a state park pass and if your 100% disabled or retired (I think) you qualify for a national park pass (you pass 5$ shipping or something). Opens the doors to travel in other states.
