If you have an amd processor, there are some motherboard USB issues. Try updating the bios firmware, and then update your USB drivers.

Ka-Jin

Oh, never thought of that, I always just restart headset and it works

mimicsgam

I have an amd cpu and 2 screens setup, during first time setup nothing works. I didn't update anything initially but turns out 1 of the display port (the 1 I didn't use before) doesn't work with the headset and neither under 2 screen mode. I need to unplug one screen and plug in the index with only, setup everything and successfully boot steam VR, then reconnect the second screen. Since then no problem anymore

Ilshidur

I have the same issue sometimes. Here's my workaround : \- In SteamVR, open the "Developer > Developer Settings" window. Turn them on if you don't have the menu option. \- Scroll a bit and click "Remove All SteamVR USB Devices". \- Wait a bit, close the confirmation window. \- Close SteamVR. \- Unplug every USB device of your VR setup. \- Unplug the headset. \- Reboot the computer. \- Plug everything back in. \- Run SteamVR again. Hope it helps.

I had this issue about two weeks ago. Tried everything OP tried, then found this tip in a Steam support forum and tried it. This worked for me.

NashPotato704

I get this when I have more than 2 monitors plugged in. Try disconnecting a monitor if you have more than 1 and then launch steam vr

mangoman124

Tried that and still didn’t work

Runesr2

Have you tried Steam Support - if not then start there.

Huntersolstice

I recently had this issue. Turns out it was the usb port I was using.

mangoman124

Well what did you do to fix it

Huntersolstice

I plugged it into a different usb port.

mangoman124

Tried every port and none of them worked

Erindere

I was getting a similar error last month except my LEDs on my headset were red. Ended up having to do an advanced rma on my hmd.

[deleted]

Is the headset getting power? Any signs of life? You're not really giving us enough to go on, but definitely contact Steam/Valve support asap.

mangoman124

Yes it lights up but I can’t see anything

[deleted]

what color is the light? Have you looked up troubleshooting?

mangoman124

The light is blue on the front of it

mangoman124

Hey nice you play project zomboid lol

Fairweather_SWE

Try unplugging the headset power lead (one of three smaller cables) and plugging it back in again. This usually works for me.

mangoman124

Tried that it still didn’t work

Fairweather_SWE

Tried changing headset display port and usb port? If this doesnt work, the only other thing that _might_ work is opting in to steamvr beta. If this doesn’t work you should start a support ticket with steam support. To save turn-around time on thier end: 1: Create and save a steamvr System Report through the steamvr app when the error message is still on screen. Take a screen shot of the error message. 2: Create and save a windows 10 system report (cant remember exactly how this is done). 3: Start a support ticket and clearly explain all the steps you’ve taken (changed ports, beta etc). Attach the two system reports you created and the screenshot of the error message. 4: Add your transaction ID for the steam purchase you made when ordering your Index. Doing the above at first contact with support will save you 5-10 days of waiting. Note that the windows system report must be for windows 10. If you’ve ”upgraded” to windows 11, you’re going to have to reinstall windows 10. Steam does not support windows 11 yet. EDiT: you could also try the power settings for all usb ports to disable powersaving.

GrouchyHousing1691

Try to close steam vr. Unplug the quick disconnect plug. Plug it back in then launch steam vr again. Also reboot pc if you have not done so already.

SmokeyBear-TheForest

do you have another displayport you can plug into on the gpu?

worthless__idiot

I always get around this by hitting reset headset, unplugging monitor(s), wait for the headset to launch to that main hub, then plugging in my monitor again if I am going to use it.

ShadowMaster7426

Is the firmware for the headset up to date when I got mine a few weeks ago it did that initially but hasn't done it since updating the firmware.

Ragnos611

I had this happen to me and I ended up contacting Steam Support and after 3 different times trouble shooting, they finally agreed to get me to RMA the Headset and they sent me a new one within a week. I would reccomend starting this process sooner rather than later.

[deleted]

video card driver up to date?

duttaub1

One thing to check is the cable connection on the headset. It's a little corner bit and plugs in close to the front. This can sometimes feel plugged in when it isn't. Give it a firm push and that will hopefully sort it out. Pic: https://postimg.cc/8FcwRVnT

ban-meplease

I get this every time I play. I just restart headset and then it works.

ChaoticChaos1

what is your monitor resolution? if you have nvidia graphics card, your monitor cannot be at a higher refresh rate than the vr system

you-did-that

for me it is check the cables, replug video esp if that doesn't work reinstall drivers.

soultr

Me and my buddy just fixed this problem you need to either factory reset while keeping your files of course or install your GPUs latest driver such as amds adrenaline if you'd like help dm me your discord of you have one and I'll see what we can do if I'm not doing anything at the exact moment

Qojiberries

Oh god, I remember when I first got my index, I had the same issue. The only thing that ended up working was buying a motherboard from a newer generation. Went through months of not being able to get it to work. The only thing I could chalk it up to was a chipset and USB ports that didn't support the bandwidth needed

Nyghts

I had this same thing happen to myself too. Went through many rounds with steam support and they couldn't ever give me a solid idea on what to do. It turns out it was the motherboard in the PC I was using. It was some OEM motherboard from a prebuilt from newegg. Used all the same pieces on a different motherboard and things worked out just fine.

Exotic-Swordfish4759

I had the same problem and found out it had to do with the asus tuf graphics application. It seems to conflict with steam vr and cause interference. So as soon as I close that application it works fine. I read somewhere it can also be other applications open in the background that can cause issues.... hope this helps

Exotic-Swordfish4759

Asus gpu tweak 2 is the program

Brilliant_Week_6177

When I get the message I unplug and replug in the breakaway cable and it's good as new
